February 23, 2017 Mr. Jacob Oliva Superintendent Flagler County School District P.O. BOX 755 Bunnell, Florida 32110 Dear Mr. Oliva, I am applying for the Flagler County School District Superintendent of Schools position. I will fully support the mission of the Flagler County School District. I am a servant leader, listener, trust and relationship builder and believe collectively we will provide for our children to succeed. I possess the skills to develop a school climate/culture that focuses on the ultimate goal, a nurturing learning environment that supports our children to be the best they can be: emotionally, socially and academically. I am a moral, compassionate, experienced collaborative leader and very fortunate at this time to be interning with Dr. James Thompson, Superintendent of Bloomfield Public Schools, CT. The academic growth of Bloomfield students has been unparalleled across the state and nation. Bloomfield Schools has been recognized by Governor Malloy, State Department of Education Commissioners Pryor and Wentzell, the Connecticut Council for Education Reform (CCER) and the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now. My career has taken me across the country giving me the opportunity to witness the emotional, socioeconomic and academic challenges and needs of our culturally and economically diverse children Pre K-24 years of age. My philosophy was shaped at the Quaezar School, a residential school for middle and high school special education and alternative education students as a teacher, Dean of Students and Academic Director. These diverse positions in this clinical and educational program afforded me the opportunity to develop the awareness, compassion and underpinning that have impacted my philosophical beliefs and ability to meet the needs of all our children. The school-wide Star Student Program we creatively developed at Northend School was based on my experiences at Quaezar and Positive Behavioral Intervention & Supports ideologies. My understanding of the needs of our children was taken to an inimitable level during my time as principal of the Arapaho Charter High School, a public school on The Wind River Reservation. I believe the key to a successful educational experience that supports and encourages our children is based on the 3 Rs: a curriculum focused on Rigor and Relevance and nurturing Relationships for our children and adults. I returned to Connecticut to care for my father who had a successful triple bypass and is now on the run. I look forward to meeting you to discuss how I can contribute to the Flagler County School District family. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Nicola Campagna

January 16, 2014 To whom it may concern,

It is my pleasure to recommend Nicola Campagna for an administrative position with your

school district. In his position as High School Principal, Mr. Campagna has been employed with

our district from July, 2014 – present.

Nick is doing an excellent job in this position and is an asset to our school district since the

beginning of his tenure with Fremont County School District #38. He has excellent written and

verbal communication skills, is organized, can work independently, and is able to effectively

multi-task to ensure that all projects are completed in a timely manner.

Nick is always willing to offer his assistance and has excellent rapport with teachers, students,

parents, and other administrators in and out of the district. Since taking the position with our

district at Arapahoe Charter High School, he has been engaged in additional training to become

more proficient in current issues and strategies to enable him to help the teachers,

paraprofessionals and other staff members at ACHS. Nick has also been instrumental in

improving the students’ attendance at Arapahoe Charter High School and meeting the

instructional needs of all students.

He has demonstrated that education is not only his career of choice but a way of life. Nick will

be a great role model and an asset to any district. I highly recommend him for any position in

your district he chooses to pursue without reservation. If you have any questions please call me

at 307-840-6095 or 307-856-9333 ext. 185.

Respectfully,

Kenneth Crowson Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Fremont County School District #38 [email protected]

EFFORTS TO REDUCE RACIAL, ETHNIC, AND ECONOMIC ISOLATION

Connecticut law requires that school districts provide educational opportunities for their students to interact with students and teachers from diverse racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. This may occur through programs with other schools, distance learning, or other experiences. Below is the description submitted by this school of how it provides such experiences. Northend Elementary School makes every effort to reduce racial, ethnic, and economic isolation. Our population is richly diverse, and we provide an environment where all students are respected and valued for the unique characteristics and gifts that they bring. Our goal is to reduce economic isolation and promote an appreciation and awareness of diversity by introducing our students to a variety of cultural and learning experiences. Northend students have participated in numerous activities in order to broaden their knowledge of the world around them. The Parent Teacher Association works to provide cultural events that enhance the educational experiences for all. The PTA sponsors field trips for every grade, exposing students to new learning opportunities. Individual classes visited the public library and museums. Through Northend School's Star Student program, students participated in many additional experiences. Students attended the 2003 Hispanic Heritage Celebration, which included the unveiling of the Cesar Chavez postage stamp. They also attended and participated in an African drumming demonstration at New Britain High School. Additionally, Northend students took part in the Hispanic Health Council's Building the Bridge to Diversity program. Students from Northend School participated in New Britain's All City Concert, which brings together students from all New Britain schools. By integrating curriculum content, hands-on activities and educationally sound practices in a supportive learning environment, we provide our students with a quality education that reduces isolation and moves them toward academic excellence.

89-09 Page 6 EVIDENCE OF SUSTAINED IMPROVEMENTS IN STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Below is a summary, submitted by this school, of the major trends in student performance and accomplishments that indicate sustained improvement over time. Also, areas of need are identified and plans to address these needs are presented. CMT data show a wide range of yearly achievement. On-going analysis searches for trends that must be addressed through staff development, lesson development and curriculum delivery. The focus is to continue to improve teachers' understanding of effective instructional practices. Teachers meet regularly in grade level teams to collaboratively address academic issues. Students in grades K - 5 receive assistance in reading and mathematics through literacy tutors and resource teachers. In addition, Project ARISE (After-school Reading is Exciting) supports students in grades 3-5. District reading and math resource teachers model lessons and work with classroom teachers to address specific areas of weakness on the CMT. Integral to success are collaboration between classroom teachers and Title I teachers, sound instructional procedures, and a home component. Northend School utilized a guided reading model in our second grade. Block scheduling, restructuring of staff schedules and collaboration among teachers, reading specialists and tutors were used to best meet the needs of our students. Children were flexibly grouped according to DRA results and received small group direct instruction simultaneously each day. All staff members met every four weeks to discuss instructional strategies and to assess students' progress. Adjustments in grouping were made as needed. Utilizing our Star Student program, we tracked the progress of every child in the building on a weekly basis. This data was used to recognize students for their accomplishments and to identify children who required interventions. Students who did not achieve predetermined benchmarks received an extra study hall period. Prior to the implementation of this program, a survey of staff members indicated that a lack of work completion was a significant obstacle to our students' academic success. This year, our data indicated that 74% of our students completed 90% or more of their assigned class work and homework for the school year. More than two thousand books and school supplies were awarded to our students in recognition of their achievements. Northend Elementary School staff members continue to attend professional development activities that explore innovative instructional techniques as part of our mission to best provide our students with an exceptional education.

SUPPLEMENTAL SCHOOL INFORMATION

The space below was optionally used by this school to describe aspects of the school not presented elsewhere in the profile. For instance, character education or programs designed to improve school climate may be described. Northend Elementary School is a neighborhood school, truly the only neighborhood school left in New Britain. The original Northend School opened on the site in April 1876 and continued in use until 1931. The present building opened in 1932 and was named after Charles Northend, a former superintendent. Outwardly, the school appears today much as it did when it opened in 1932. However, inside, opportunities abound for both academic and social growth. Northend School uses a Star Student Program, which was implemented in 2002. This program promotes positive work habits, enthusiasm for learning, and increased student achievement. Students earn up to ten stars per week dependent on their percentage of work completion, which is tracked by their teachers. The children earn books and school supplies based on the cumulative number of stars they have received. Additionally, students have their names posted on a Wall of Fame upon reaching each milestone. Along with individual awards, the Star Student program has a component that fosters cooperation and teamwork within the school. Recognition is provided for individual classes and for the entire student body upon reaching predetermined high levels of achievement. Parents, students and teachers have indicated that students have demonstrated increased motivation, a more positive attitude toward school and greater academic success since the implementation of this program. Northend School, with its roots deep in our city's historical past, strives to prepare its students for the future. There are plans to renovate the building in 2005 to provide an environment that moves students forward into the 21st century. With the hard work and dedication of staff, parents, and community members, Northend Elementary School continues its quest for educational excellence.
