NIAGARA SECTION BUFFALO, NIAGARA FALLS, AND WESTERN NEW YORK STATE SUMMER 2019 N ICKEL C ITY S TAR Niagara Power Vista Tour by Gene Long It ranks as one of the greatest local events that we have had. The newly reno- vated Niagara Power Vista is truly a breathtaking experience, from the com- manding views of the river and the power project itself, to the multitude of fascinating displays. This venue is a physical chronicle of the massive effort un- dertaken in the 1950’s to ensure that the “greenest” of power sources would be available to us, and those who follow, for the foreseeable future. This generat- ing system converts the awesome power of the Niagara River’s potential energy to multi-megawatts of electricity injected into the NY power grid. The grid enables essential electric activities for hundreds of miles, including NY City. Hats are off to Gary and Fran Baumgartner for organizing a well-attended personalized and interactive guided tour. Our tour guide was extremely well versed on the entire facility, including its history, environmental issues, exhib- its, and current events. He also deftly handled our questions and made us feel that we should visit more often to see the rest of what we missed! The views of the gorge from the observation deck 350 feet above the river were magnificent, and the theater with moving seats - amazing. We went from the Power Vista over to Lewiston and had lunch at a great res- taurant called Tin Pan Alley. More photos on page 6...

President’s Message Editor, on behalf of Bill Fix

(At the time of publication, Bill is dealing with family issues, so this is written on his behalf.—Ed.)

Looking forward to good ‘ol Summertime, the section is planning some great events this year!

We are again holding our traditional BeerFest at the home of John and Debbie Boehm. Please be on the lookout for details on email and FaceBook.

Before that event, however, we are planning a new charitable endeavor to benefit Mercy Flight. Our members Bev Basinski, Ed Yungbluth, and Cynthia Battle have collaborated with the Holy Mother of the Rosary Cathedral to launch a Flea Market in conjunction with their annual Cruise Day. Tables are still available for a $20 donation, and of course you are welcome to keep the profits from whatever you sell! See page 5 for details.

Then, in August we are planning a New Members Picnic to be hosted by Ed and Bev. If your club membership is newer than one year, please expect a call from one of our sponsor members with a personal invitation to the party.

As regular meeting attendees know, the May meeting was held at a different location, which was very pleasant and the staff very accommodating. We plan on continuing to meet at the Hillview Restaurant for future meetings. The food is good too!

2019 is an Election year. This is an opportunity for those of you who wish to bring change to our section, to step up. All of those who have served have felt honored and privileged to be officers. Now it’s time to bring new ideas and new energy to one of the best and most active sections in MBCA. Please start thinking about nominations for President, VP, Secretary and Treasurer (by September), and voting (October). At the November meeting the new officers will take over and will be looking for member/volunteers to handle such positions as Event Coordinator, Communications Coordinator, Newsletter Edi-tor, Membership Chair, Webmaster, and others, as the new officers will request. It’s fun and rewarding to be a part of the club’s leadership, so please help out where you can.

The Buffalo Transportation Museum 2019

The small group of us with severe cabin fever needed to do something car-related, so we got together at the Buffalo Transportation Museum. Also remembered by many as the Pierce Ar-row Museum, with the Frank Lloyd Wright Filling Station exhibition, we were once again awed by the numerous displays of significant items from days gone by! From bird cages and iceboxes, bicycles, to memorabilia and classic cars, there is more to look at every time we visit this wonderful museum.

For a limited engagement, the Pierce Arrow Silver Star was on display. This magnificent car is one of three remaining, and as a coincidence, was previously owned and restored right here in town by the grandfather of a good friend of ours. She quips that it was a wonderful car to ride in!

Following our visit to the museum, we made a short trek to the Pearl Street Grill and enjoyed a tasty Buffalo lunch.
