Nick Pate wins MN Masters; on way to USBC Masters

Nick Pate of Inver Grove Heights returned home after a week of bowling the USBC Team USA Champion-ships in Las Vegas and entered the Minneso-ta Masters tournament at Concord Lanes on January 7. He quali-fi ed in fourth place and then went through dou-ble-elimination match play to win the event.

Pate breezed through the Winner’s Bracket and waited as Ryan Sa-voy, Superior, won the Lower’s Bracket.

The two met with Sa-voy needing to win two games against Pate. However, Pate’s fi rst game of 214 topped Sa-voy’s 186 to capture the fi rst place $850 prize and an entry to the 2018 USBC Masters Tourna-ment in Syracuse, New York.

Matt McNiel, Min-neapolis, was the qual-ifying leader with a 232 average over eight games.

The 2018 USBC Mas-ters is scheduled April 8-15 at the OnCenter in Syracuse, New York with the live televised

fi nals on April 15.

Local bowlers shine at U.S. Amateur event in Las Vegas

The Team USA Trials and the U.S. Amateur qualifying was held the fi rst week of January in Las Vegas. The Orle-ans Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center was the venue for over 310 am-ateur, youth and profes-sional bowlers.

Minnesota bowlers were well represented. In the U.S. Amateur listing, the Pate family had three of their bowl-ers at the top of the lists. Lauren Pate placed 25th in the olisting. Josh Pate was 13th in the amateur list and his brother Nick Pate was in 28th place.

Jaden Tufenk, a youth bowler, rolled 211-237-242/690 and Arron Pawelk paced the adult men with 267/747 fol-lowed by Jerry Maule (258/691) and Josh Aydt (254/684).

Pinz, Oakdale: Greg Volkers (pictured) hit the strike pot and earned $2200 with a Radi-cal Fix from On Track Eagan. Christy Marx (248/603) and Gina Al-tobelli (215/588) were the stars in the Shan-non Auto Glass league. Zach Lingen led the PinBusters league with a 280 game in a 699 se-ries. Other top scorers included Chris Peltier (237/661, Thursday Night Traitors) and Anthony Rivera (246/688, Wednesday Night Suburban).

Memory Lanes, Minneapolis: Toni Veldey was bowling on Wednesday when she took a 202 game and fi nished with a 544 series. Pacing the men’s bowling were Jeff Morris (628), Mike Col-by (245/625), Dan Lancette (233, 153 average) and Brian Jackett (245-246-270/761).

Blainbrook Bowl, Blaine: Maureen Pearson and Chad Thorp were the stars on the women’s and men’s side, with 223/643 and 278/757, re-spectively. Flaherty’s Arden Bowl, Arden Hills: Jim Hasling (669), Jeff Smith (269/663) and Tim More (662) were the top rollers on the men’s side. Linda Williams was bowling in the LEWED league when she posted 214/697 and Toni Thole had a 540 series.

Drkula’s 32 Bowl, Inver Grove Heights: Jeanne Morrow led the women’s bowling with a 254 game in a 642 series. Lider Pinada also did well with 254-214/642 with Sue Carlson (227/544) and Minh Mai (219-206/598 follow-ing. Gary Salzman gathered a dozen strikes for a 300 game and 705 series.
