Some Current Types of AS/RS Unit load AS/RS - Large automated system designed

to use S/R machines to move unit loads on palletsinto and out of storage racks.

Deep-Lane AS/RS High-density unit load storagesystem, designed to store large amounts of stockwith relatively little amounts of stock types. Itgenerally stores ten or more loads in a single rackwith the input on one side and output on the other

Mini-load AS/RS - Smaller automated systemdesigned to move smaller loads into and out ofstorage bins or drawers.

Man-on-board AS/RS - Uses personnel to pickitems from racks or bins, reducing transaction time.

Automated item retrieval system - Items to bemoved are stored in single file lanes, rather than inbins or drawers.

Vertical lift storage modules same principle ofusing a center aisle to access loads is used exceptthat the aisle is vertical. Helps to save floor space

Integration

Automated storage/retrieval systems are customdesigned for each application.

At the most sophisticated level, the operations aretotally automated, computer controlled, and fullyintegrated with the factory and/or warehouseoperations.

At the other extreme human workers control theequipment and perform the storage/retrievaltransactions.

Sizing an AS/RS System Each aisle of a four-aisle AS/RS contains

60 storage compartments in the lengthdirection and 12 compartments vertically.
