to complement the naturally glorious beauty of the majestic and powerful falls, there is – quite literally – “one wonder after another” to discover here in niagara. We invite your meeting and conference delegates to be inspired by the landscape, challenged and seduced by its offerings, and warmed by her gracious hospitality.

2012 will be forever be earmarked as niagara falls’ year of the Dare Devil, as it hosted several iconic, highly acclaimed, and historical events. from nik Wallenda’s incredible high-wire walk across the horseshoe falls, to Jay cochrane’s summer of skywalks, and the highly anticipated Red bull crashed ice competition, we continue to attract the world's attention time and time again. if niagara falls can seamlessly execute the logistics to make these globally renowned events happen, just imagine what we can do for you.

celebrating a wondrous first birthday, the gem of all conventions centres is our very own scotiabank convention centre; recently voted one of the world’s top six new centres. spectacular in design, unconventional in its purpose, and best-in-class for its service, the sccn is our reminder and promise that you can be grand and yet still intimate in features and human connection.

to maximize and enhance all that your time permits, we encourage your delegates to jump onboard the new state-of-the-art Wego bus system; a transportation system linking all four corners of niagara falls with accessibility around every corner. Regrettably, it’s impossible to see and do all that niagara offers in just one trip, yet we’re hoping to give you a fighting chance.

as you can see, we’ve been anticipating your arrival and we’re ready to please! Whatever your interests, niagara falls tourism has the professionals to assist with your planning needs.

We look forward to hosting you and your guests in niagara falls in 2013.

armed with a vast experience in sales, vittoria has held her reputation as being one of the best in the industry. her passion, persistence and determination have not only secured her a successful and rewarding career; but have also driven her to the summit heights of Mount kilimanjaro, Mount everest base camp, and – most recently – through the peruvian inca trail to Machu picchu.

as a 28 year veteran of the hospitality industry, vittoria opened the door to industry certification by becoming one of niagara’s first certified meeting professionals, receiving her certification in 1998. as a contracted consultant, vittoria was invited to work with the niagara falls tourism group sales team in July 2012, which naturally progressed into her current role. in developing outstanding performance teams, she believes that “we’re humans serving humans”; and that through effective communication, trust, collaboration, and dedicated leadership that any obstacle can be overcome and any mountain climbed. each and every day, vittoria demonstrates the understanding that “she who wholeheartedly wins the support of her troops; wins the war.”

introduced in the 2012 fiscal year, vittoria's newly developed position is vitally responsible for managing the sales, marketing, and strategic business development activities of niagara falls tourism group sales departments. broadly, the role continues to support the development and implementation of the niagara falls tourism's mission of generating economic impact for the niagara falls destination through generating room nights, convention and group bookings, and visitor spending.

located in Montreal, Joanne st-pierre has been supporting the niagara falls tourism team for over 3 years. after 15 years as an association meeting manager, Joanne went to work for starwood hotels & Resorts as its global account director, representing 900 hotels around the world. armed with her in-depth experience in the association market, Joanne develops and delivers marketing and sales initiatives that promote niagara falls and the surrounding region as the pre-eminent meetings destination within canada. she continues to represent niagara within the association market in eastern canada, united states of america, and international markets.

Joanne has earned volumes of respect from her fellow peers and industry professionals. she is an endless source of passionate energy and never shies away from volunteering within her Mpi and csae chapters to enhance the industry’s education platform. acting as a panel expert, a workshop leader, and event organizer, Joanne walks her talk and believes giving is the beginning to receiving.

specializing in conventions and corporate meetings, paula Racher has led the niagara falls tourism team to successfully capitalize on this particular segment. paula has been part of the team for over 2 years and continues to successfully act as the liaison between niagara falls tourism and corporate clientele. paula has been a tourism industry professional since 1989, with experience in kitchener, toronto, niagara on the lake, and niagara falls.

paula appreciates the small details that it requires to execute successful and memorable events; and as a result of this personality trait, she’s the first to push herself towards continual self-improvement. she is an active member within her Mpi chapter, in which she sits on their communications committee; as well as a member of her csae trillium chapter, in which she serves on their winter summit.

in her current role, paula continues to represent niagara within the conventions and corporate meetings market in canada, united states of america, and international markets.

“It is usually easy to find some constructive criticism, but in this case it is really hard. From the time I started to deal with the Sales Coordinator on setting up the meeting until we checked out, everything went on without a hitch. The Courtyard staff was very accommodating with everything. I honestly cannot find a fault with anything that we needed or asked for. It was always taken care of.” John, Solid Concepts

foodies, sweet teeth, and snackers take heart. niagara falls comes well stocked with a delicious spread of restaurants to suit every taste. Whether your programming calls for a quick and hearty lunch or a full course dinner, there's a whole region of food experts ready to serve your group in style.

need some inspiration? We asked some of the niagara’s top celebrity chefs who have chosen to call niagara their home to offer their perspectives and recommendations for making the most of niagara's culinary scene.

Why you should try scotiabank Convention Centre: My connection wi th the scot iabank convent ion centre allows me to showcase niagara to guests who might otherwise not see the region, since they may be at a convention, conference, or in meetings all day. by experiencing niagara on your plate, you get a sense of the time of year and the produce and preparations that are in season.

Favourite Meal: My favourite meal c h a n g e s w i t h t h e s e a s o n s , b u t regardless of the time of year, i am a big fan of the "sunday supper". in autumn, that means a roasted chicken with pan juices and roasted root

vegetables; while in winter, it's a slow-braised dish like pot roast; in spring i t 's roasted lamb with asparagus and goat cheese; and in summer it's barbecue ribs with fresh salads.

When i'm not in the kitchen i'm ... at the local farmers' markets and farmgate stands.

My advice for planning a “wow” c u l i n a r y e x p e r i e n c e : c a p t u re that "sense of place" by planning seasonally coordinated menus. and for a big impact at dessert, consider a dessert table. this allows the guests to choose what they wish – and as much or little as they wish – while gazing upon a spectacle. Desserts make for a showpiece of a display! alternatively, consider a dessert "reception" after the main course, where guests can mix and mingle in the reception space while hors d'oeuvre-sized desserts are passed around. this is a great way to keep the group together, engaged, and doing business after the formal meal has ended.

Why you should try Windows by Jamie Kennedy: We offer niagara regional food wine and culture to niagara falls, as well as an international tourist destination within the niagara region.

What i enjoy most about working in Niagara Falls: it's an interesting study of a culture and economy that seems separate from what's going on in the region.

Favourite Meal: corned beef and cabbage

When i'm not in the kitchen i'm ... on the farm.

My advice for planning a “wow” culinary experience: Make sure all the component parts of the experience are genuine, speaking from a niagara regional perspective.

Why you should try peller estates Winery: i believe peller has become the definitive wine and food destination. My love for finding the perfect balance between farm dr iven cu is ine and niagara wine has become a passion of mine. this gives our guests an insight as to what the region truly has to offer.

What i enjoy most about working in Niagara Falls: there are many great reasons to love working in the niagara Region. for me, the most inspiring

is not only does this area have a great microclimate and create world class wines, it also produces some of the most incredible ingredients for chefs to play with.

Favourite Meal: this is tough question. My personal passion is

to source out fresh seasonal ingredients when they are at their prime. so for me, nothing tastes better than the first crop of asparagus, warm tomatoes off the vine, or perfectly tree-ripened peaches. anything picked at it’s peak is my favourite meal.

When i'm not in the kitchen ... i like to travel. there is something about having no agenda and just a route to experience a country’s culture and cuisine. When i can’t get away, i enjoy cycling, which is a great way for me to discover my own part of the world.

My advice for planning a “wow” culinary experience: niagara is a great place to “wow” your clients. no matter what time of year, there is always something going on at peller estates. from drinking icewine hot chocolate and roasting icewine Marshmallows on an open fire in the winter, dining amongst the vines in the summer, or eating a harvest lunch with a whole roasted suckling pig in the fall, wine country is full of unique and regionally inspired culinary experiences.

the 2012 canaDian GaminG Summit thunDeRs into niagaRa falls

30 | www.niagarafallstourism.com

in June 2012, the makers and shakers of the canadian and us gaming industry descended on niagara falls for the 16th annual canadian gaming summit. hosted by Mediaedge communications and the canadian gaming association, the yearly gala united over 1000 gaming delegates from across north america to shake hands, trade insights, showcase businesses, and soak up the natural excitement of one of the country's premier meeting destinations.

“the olg and fallsview casino Resort were both extremely supportive of bringing the summit to niagara falls,” says chris torry, operation Manager with Mediaedge. “every year we base our city selection on input from our partners at the canadian gaming association; interest from the provincial lottery corporation; proximity to gaming facilities and their interest, support and participation in the event; and a city's venue offerings and ability to host this multi-faceted event. niagara falls met all of these conditions and more, and all of the venues that we worked with were top-notch from selection to planning and execution.”

the summit swung into full gear on Monday, June 11th, with the traditional canadian gaming summit golf classic at the Whirlpool golf course. here, gamers enjoyed eighteen holes on one of golf course architect stanley thompson's most celebrated creations against the backdrop of the niagara River Whirlpool and gorge.

fresh from their day on the links, the players traded tees and turf for a great view and good company at the summit's official welcoming ceremony at the elements on the falls, situated at the upper level of the scenic table Rock Welcome centre. nearly 400 attended the welcoming event, which included cocktails, appetizers, and an unparalleled view of niagara's star attraction. the night concluded with an after-party at the colourful Jimmy buffet's Margaritaville, where delegates slipped into island mode for a night of live music, tasty eats, and relaxed conversation with colleagues new and old.

“our guests really enjoyed all the social elements of the summit,” says bill Rutsey, president of the canadian gaming association, co-owners with Mediaedge of the summit. “the off-site venues, elements on the falls, and Margaritaville were great party venues that allowed people to mix, mingle, socialize, and have fun.”

With their opening night behind them, summit attendees hopped aboard the continuous shuttles on tuesday morning to partake in two full days of keynote addresses, industry sessions, round tables, and catered

luncheons at the scotiabank convention centre. this state-of-the-art venue proved to be an ideal headquarters for the event's main programming, offering attendees a wealth of meeting spaces in which to talk shop and get down to business. the scotiabank convention centre was also home to the jewel of cga's annual event: the canadian gaming summit exhibition. the massive tradeshow featured booths and exhibitors from all corners of the industry spread over the centre's 81,140 sp. ft. exhibit hall; and included hot buffet lunches and breakfasts care of scotiabank convention centre's attentive staff.

“the scotiabank convention centre was the perfect size and configuration for the summit, offering sufficient floor space for the exhibition, large ballrooms for plenary sessions and meals, and enough breakout and meeting rooms for the extensive education program,” says torry. “it had been open for just over a year when the summit was held there and everything ran smoothly as if they'd been in business for years.”

by Wednesday, it was time to send the 2012 summit off in style during the annual awards Reception and charity gala at the lavish fallsview casino Resort. here, guests mingled for afternoon cocktails before finding their seat inside the casino's spacious grand hall. the evening featured multi-media presentations for both the canadian gaming industry awards and the 3rd annual first nation canadian gaming awards; during which time guests enjoyed a seated, four-course meal prepared to perfection by fallsview casino's extraordinary chefs.

Reflecting on both of the summit's main venues, Rutsey recalls, “the scotiabank convention centre was ideal for all conference elements, from the keynotes, plenary sessions, presentations, panels, trade show floor, and on-site dining. fallsview casino Resort ballroom and the 21 club were both the right size to host awards gala dinner and after party. the food and beverage service was outstanding at both events.”

the summit dinner was visited by John, paul, george, Ringo – or rather, their convincing stand-ins – in the award winning tribute act, “stars of beatlemania”. later, the party continued upstairs at the private chairman's Reception in the elegant and trendy 21 club, providing a stylish cap to a successful industry event.

“everyone loved the 2012 summit,” says chuck nervick, senior vice president at Mediaedge, a co-owner of the annual canadian gaming summit. “beyond the excellent program we put together for attending delegates, niagara falls was a destination that many delegates work in and are close to, and one in which many suppliers and sponsors are active. it was a perfect choice and the feedback has been great with respect to the region.”

Reflecting on the allure of niagara falls on a whole, nervick adds, “We had not ran an event in niagara falls before 2012 and were pleasantly surprised at what the region had to offer. there are plenty of event options at varying price points and areas of attractiveness that only certain cities such as niagara falls can offer. i would consider niagara falls a true meeting destination offering multiple options for any type of event. the staff we dealt with were top notch and helped make our event one of the smoothest summits we've done to date. i would encourage all meeting planners to take a look at niagara falls as it has a ton to offer and is a great place to hold an event.”

“Niagara Falls had all the physical elements we need, the casinos, clubs and restaurants, more than sufficient hotel availability at all price-points, all backed by the sheer physical beauty of the Falls.”

Every year, planners and coordinators from across Canada make Niagara Falls their pick, bringing hundreds of world class meetings and events to the Niagara region. Here is what some of them had to say about their experiences...

Joe Nishi & Jennifer glynnpartners, Meeting encore ltd.

event: Meeting encore client event (June 2011)venue: peller estates Winery attendance: 25

“the venue was perfect as we did a lunch time 'dine around' throughout the grounds of peller estates Winery. at each station we sipped the wines from that particular area of the winery and savoured gourmet foods from chef parsons. it was an amazing afternoon networking with our clients and niagara falls partners. looking back, i would absolutely recommend niagara falls to other planners. the indoor and outdoor activity options for groups are fantastic, the meeting venues are numerous and in great condition, and – best of all – like the team at peller, the service and hospitality in niagara falls is top notch. you really feel like you're getting away from the office without having to travel a super long distance.”

“the scotiabank convention centre allowed both events to grow their trade show components with their large exhibit hall. the meeting space was also good for both events. both events experienced an increase in attendance over previous years which we attributed to the ability to increase the size and content of our trade show and the area of niagara falls as a destination. attendees and exhibitors appreciate the variety of restaurants and other activities that niagara falls has to offer. it encourages attendees to bring family and use the conferences as a reason for a get-a-way. as a conference coordinator, i liked the variety of hotels and price points available to our guests. i would absolutely recommend niagara falls to other planners.”

“chocolate fx was an unique venue which allowed us to combine hands on fun with an unique dining experience. guests were able to make their own chocolates as take home gifts (along with sampling some as they went along) and we worked with great area chefs to create a 'chocolate influenced' menu. the entire evening was fun, interactive, educational, and tasty! staff at chocolate fx were knowledgeable and passionate about their profession and easy to work with, and open to customizing the entire experience to meet our program objectives.”

“fallsview casino Resort went out of their way to make certain that everything happened exactly as we had envisioned. everything went just perfect. We had the right amount of servers, there were no hitches, and everything flowed really, really well. serving 620 people is a feat in and of itself. the quality of the food and the quality of the people i dealt with at the casino were second to none. it was absolutely top drawer – everything was superb.”

the service and quality of the centre goes beyond what most venues can achieve,

resulting in a positive meeting and convention experience for the hosting

organization and the individual delegates. from the lowest to the highest level

met and your meeting is a complete success. it is also a venue that takes great

pains to source local foods and present meals that are wholesome, healthy, and

absolutely delicious. the centre also proved that they could work with even the
