OverviewThe NI USRP™ RIO software defined radio (SDR) platform provides an integrated hardware and software solution for rapidly prototyping high-performance wirelesscommunication systems. Each USRP RIO device has two RF transceivers and a large Xilinx Kintex-7 (410T) FPGA in a half-1U rack-mountable form factor. The Kintex-7 FPGA isa reconfigurable LabVIEW FPGA target that incorporates DSP48 coprocessing for high-rate, low-latency applications. With the flexible hardware architecture and the LabVIEWunified design flow, researchers can prototype faster and significantly shorten time to results. Researchers around the world are using this design flow to prototype a wide range ofadvanced research applications that include multiple input, multiple output (MIMO); synchronization of heterogeneous networks; LTE relaying; RF compressive sampling;spectrum sensing; cognitive radio; beamforming; and direction finding.

Figure 1. USRP RIO Block Diagram
Unified Software Design Flow With LabVIEW, LabVIEW FPGA, and the NI-USRP Driver
NI USRP RIO devices work with the NI-USRP software driver, which provides functions (LabVIEW VIs) forhardware and software configuration with tools to open and close sessions and perform read and write operations.Algorithms designed in LabVIEW using the NI-USRP driver for previous NI USRP devices seamlessly run on theNI USRP RIO platform.
USRP RIO devices also are shipped with a sample LabVIEW FPGA project. The project is an effective startingpoint for implementing algorithms on the FPGA. Taking advantage of the unified LabVIEW design flow and thesample project, you can increase performance by moving time-critical parts of the algorithm into the FPGA.Complementary tools for advanced digital signal processing (DSP) design with LabVIEW FPGA such as theLabVIEW FPGA IP Builder aid in the prototyping process by analyzing and optimizing performance.
Figure 2. LabVIEW-Based Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Transmitter With .m File Script Integration
Integrating IP in LabVIEW
You can access a wide variety of IP for RF and wireless communications through the functions and referencedesigns for host and FPGA-based implementations.
LabVIEW-Based Graphical Programming
Integrated analysis functions for a variety of signal processing and communications techniques—from filters tofast Fourier transforms and channel models—cover a wide range of applications that you can implement on thehost, in real time, or on the FPGA.
.m File Script Syntax
3/6 www.ni.com
.m File Script Syntax
With the LabVIEW MathScript RT Module, you can efficiently execute the .m file syntax in a LabVIEW diagram. You can design and implement communications algorithms using the popular .m file script syntax.
C/C++
Import custom C files wrapped as DLL files in LabVIEW using the Shared Library Node. VI calls are automaticallycreated by supplying the .dll and .h header file to the import wizard.
VHDL
The IP Integration Node offers a way to add existing VHDL code to LabVIEW. This node also automaticallycreates a simulation model for the IP, so you can simulate the FPGA diagram on the development computer.Once configured, you can use the IP Integration Node like any other LabVIEW node with inputs and outputs.
Xilinx CORE Generator IP
You can move Xilinx CORE Generator IP blocks directly from the LabVIEW FPGA palette onto the block diagram. This streamlines integrating existing communications, math, and even image or video processing IP using thesame IP Integration Node introduced in the LabVIEW 2010 FPGA Module.
Complete SDR System Configurations
A typical USRP RIO SDR system includes the following:
A host computer that can be a desktop, laptop, or PXI Express controller
