From1872,aCrownagentbeganmakingpre-titleadvancesto individuals he deemed to have interests in the Ohinemuri block.In1875,theCrownrealisedthatitwasnotgoingtobeable to obtain the agreement of enough owners to purchase theOhinemuriblock, anditnegotiatedaleaseinstead.Amongthe 88 individuals who signed the lease were at least eight membersoftheiwi.TheCrownappliedalltherentalincometo the repayment of advances despite not all of the owners havingacceptedtheseadvances.Asaresult,NgātiTaraTokanuididnotreceiveanyincomefromgoldminingintheirrohe.
