GENERAL DESTINI lived up to expectations by taking out the final of the Group 2 Berwick Mazda Harri-son-Dawson over 515 metres at San-down last Thursday night.

After coming up with box one in the $75,000 to the winner event, the son of Where’s Pedro and Greys Des-tiny was third pick on SuperTAB at $4.60.

Favourite for the race was the dog that defeated General Destini in the heats, Cape Hawke, a $2.80 shot.

Ironically, these two chasers had the same alley as they did the week prior, with Cape Hawke booked to wear the white vest again.

Splitting that pair with punters was recent Golden Easter Egg win-ner, Don’t Knocka Him, who had box seven and was rated at $3.40.

Wy Yung Tiger in box eight was next pick at $8.90, with David Bale in the green vest at $9.40, whilst the remaining trio weren’t given a lot of hope, with Lektra Johnson ($24.60), Smoke Home ($30.30) and Premier Boloney ($42.10).

When the boxes flew open it was Cape Hawke that won the start, with Smoke Home out well too, and Don’t Knocka Him was also away smartly. Cape Hawke had the lead at the first mark in 5.06 with three quarters of a length to Smoke Home on his

outer, while over on the fence was General Destini and trapped wide was Don’t Knocka Him. Heading to the back Cape Hawke had opened a three lengths lead when he suddenly faltered and was quickly passed by the entire field without incident. The Jamie Ennis trained star had broken a hock and pulled up. General Destini took over and raced to the back turn in charge in 18.81, with David Bale three lengths back second, Lektra Johnson had run to third, with Don’t Knocka Him still racing wide.

General Destini, who is very strong at the end of his sprint races, came around the final bend staring at Group glory, but he now had David Bale right on his hammer, with Pre-mier Boloney railing his way into it.

But General Destini was not to be denied and stuck to his task down the running, crossing the line with a length and three quarters to spare over David Bale, with Premier Bolo-ney, who had come from last early, turning in an impressive effort to get third money, a length in arrears.

Lektra Johnson finished fourth in front of Smoke Home, Don’t Knocka Him and Wy Yung Tiger.

General Destini posted a new PB and Best Of Night 29.32 to tick-up his fourth win in nine goes at the trip, taking his career tally to nine wins and nine placings from 21 outings.

The black chaser has now amassed $108,005 for his owner trainer, Lethbridge based Norm Ri-naldi, who told us, “I’d been working on him to try and get out a bit quicker, as I felt he needed to be up

there a bit closer this time.” “I was pretty happy with where

he was going out of the straight; I thought he’d be hard to beat from there.”

“It was very unfortunate what happened to Cape Hawke. I spoke to Jamie and offered my condolences afterwards. You hate to see things like that happen.”

“I was very pleased with my bloke though, as he did what he

needed to.” “The week before General Des-

tini came out to try and pass; he’d done that before but he stayed on the fence here. He’s still learning but he’s going well.”

“He’d had split webbing that I’d been working on.”

“I was trying to make sure he was 100%. I didn’t want to put a rubber band on his toes, as he doesn’t seem to like things like that, so I figured I

wouldn’t upset him or anything. It all worked out well.”

I asked Norm what future plans were for General Destini.

“I’ll just sit down and have a look at what’s on next. It’s only the wife and I, so I can’t be travelling all over the place.”

“I’m in no real hurry with them, as they’re still only babies this lot (litter), and they’ve only just turned two.” - Darryl Embling

General Destini and Emilio (Norm) Rinaldi were flanked by a large throng of greyhound racing supporters for the presentation after the Group 2 Harrison–Dawson final. Box one certainly made all the difference, as the Lethbridge based racer clocked a very smart Best Of Night 29.32 for the 515 metres trip.

IT WAS in the 600 metres Fawkner Flowers Grade 5 heat that Rob Britton trained his first winner last Saturday night at the Broadmeadows track, as Barrique snared his 15th raceday success. Raced by George Farrugia, the media guru at The Meadows, the consistent racer wasn’t well served at boxrise but had railed through to be third behind the Anakie bitch, Paper Chaser, who led them past the post in 8.91, with Whodat Lass his closest op-ponent. Paper Chaser continued to dictate the terms to the others along the back, passing the mark-ers in 22.17 with a length lead over Barrique, while Black Jaca was now third, still more than four lengths down. After Paper Chaser found bother rounding the final bend, Barrique pounced.

The son of Bombastic Shiraz and Silent Flower came away to beat Mystery Pink by nearly three lengths in 34.72, while Black Jaca was third, three quarters of a length further astern. IMPORTED greyhound, Se-quoia has notched some pretty good wins at Melbourne’s city venues, and last weekend at The Meadows the dark brindle bitch handed in a great effort to annex the Geotechnical Laboratories Grade 5 heat over 600 metres. Sent to box six at $3.70 fa-vourite, Sequoia was quick out and cut across to the rail to be second behind the wide-tracking Onya Spirit a lap out in 9.29.

Shuffled back to fourth rounding the second bend, Se-quoia hugged the rail and gained a clear passage to take over and clock 22.04 coming off the back.

Once ahead it was quite easy for the daughter of Kiowa WW Brother and Time For A Party, who saluted the judge two and a half lengths clear of the fast fin-ishing Hostile Warrior in 35.23, with Sir Russ next across the line, nearly three lengths further afield.

Raced by the Sequoia Syndi-cate, Sequoia has contested 10 races for three wins, whilst at the northern suburbs track her score-card reads three wins from five attempts and a 34.56 PB.

MARY BRITTON owns Baurna Molly, who snared the 600 metres MTD Grade 5 heat in a new PB 34.92 to complete the Rob Britton treble.

Seemingly a greyhound that

has to be in front to show her best, Baurna Molly ran to the front from the four alley and reg-istered 9.09 when narrowly ahead of Quiet Brad with a lap out.

But it came as a bit of a sur-prise when Quiet Brad raced past Baurna Molly and held a handy break coming off the back in 22.29.

It took a lot of energy for Baurna Molly to ‘lift’, but the effort was worthwhile, as the daughter of Baurnahulla Hero and Record Keeper flashed past the post a half length ahead of Quiet Brad, with three quarters of a lengths to Suron Undercover third.

It was the ninth win with five placings after 35 outings for the October 2009 whelp, whilst her Meadows formcard shows two wins from eight starts.

- Allan Hawkswell

Sapporo made full use of the rails alley by taking out a Grade 4 in a new PB 30.09 for trainer, Tina Womann on the weekend.

TOP CONDITIONERS, Jason Thompson and Rob Britton stole the show at The Meadows last Saturday night, netting a treble apiece.

Jason kick-started the meeting in great fashion when the well backed $3.70 shot, Proven Nitro settled down third behind the pacesetting Brynne Bale (5.17) but made a sustained mid-race charge and took over com-ing off the back in the 525 metres Topcat Video Grade 5.

Dressed in the black garb, and having led in 18.12, the Sandra and Tony McGrath owned chaser was forced to fend-off the late challenge of Gomes, the popular elect at $3.50.

Unbeaten at the track and dis-tance, the son of Nitro Burst and Proven Cobalt made it six wins from 11 career starts when passing the post two lengths clear in a new PB 30.31, while Brynne Bale ($8.90) was a half length away third.

GEORGE KAIROUZ owns Un-finished, who landed the RSN Grade 5 in 30.19 to complete a double for Thompson.

After exiting box one quickly, the $3.20 pop sped past the post the first time in 5.04, leading Battina Bale and Jet Lane around the first turn.

Things didn’t get much easier for the for the front running son of Bom-bastic Shiraz and Stylish Scene along the back, with El Mulatto railing through to second, about to lay down the gauntlet to the Pearcedale chaser. With a 17.90 split, Unfinished railed through the final bend and kicked away in the run to the judge, scoring by a length and a half to El Mulatto, with Rockadore a further four lengths away third. An $8.20 chance last weekend, if ever El Mulatto learns how to begin with the others he’ll be something worthy of support. It was the eighth win from 22 starts for Unfinished, whilst Whelan, who remains undefeated at The Meadows, made it a hat-trick for Ja-son Thompson by taking out Rover Mowers Mixed 3rd/4th Grade. DRAWN THE SEVEN gate at the 525 metres top of the straight start, Whelan, the $2.60 favourite, took a couple of strides to find his feet then darted around them to wrest the lead from Dyna Steal before clocking 5.04. Once in front, the son of Meticu-lous and Little Boo sped over the sand to record a slick 17.74, with Dyna Steal and Dyna Bert his nearest rivals. And whilst Dyna Steal stuck rig-idly to his game plan, it was Whelan the wrecker at work, winning by one and three quarter lengths to Dyna Steal in 30.13, with Dyna Bert occu-pying third place. Raced by the Never look Back Syndicate, Whelan has graced the track 37 times for 18 wins and seven placings, earning $34,090, and two from two around the Northcorp Boulevard layout. - Allan Hawkswell

Whilst Ruby Ha Ha began fast from box one, it was Delfina Bale that ran slick splits and almost pinched Race 7 at The Meadows last weekend. But Ruby Ha Ha finished the better, taking out the Macro Meats Grade 5 by a half length in 30.14 for Gippsland’s Robert Neocleous. - photos: www.paulmunt.com

Whelan secured the Rover Mowers Mixed 3rd/4th Grade to cap-off a big night in town for Jason Thompson. The Pearcedale chaser ran his rivals ragged when notching his 19th career win in 30.13 at The Meadows.

IT TAKES A BIT to impress Tony Brett; one of Australia’s leading greyhound trainers.

But Tony admitted to being im-pressed when he saw Gardam Ace lead throughout to win at Albion Park last Thursday night.

The race, the Dave Brett Memorial over 520 metres, honours Tony’s late father and has developed into a very tough race to win.

It always tosses up quality young-sters, many of them going on to greater heights.

So at the post-race presentation when Tony said that Gardam Ace was “pretty impressive”, he was putting high praise on the youngster by Gardam Prince out of Evil Adams.

Gardam Ace scored by seven and a quarter lengths to Cauthen in 30.54, with six and a half lengths to third placed Have Agogo.

Gardam Ace is raced by Adam and Michelle Hines, Adam’s father, Gary, and brother, Andrew, and Andrew’s brother-in-law, Dave Lockhart, who is in his first venture into greyhound racing.

Adam raced both the sire and dam. “This is a very special dog,” said

Adam. “I thought he would run 30.10 but he copped a bit of buffeting early in the race and that could have taken a few tenths from him.”

“He’s been something special from the time he was broken-in,” said Adam.

“I normally do all our own dogs, but at the time we were busy still getting our home back to normal, so I asked Rick Nelson, who lives across the road, to educate him for us.”

Last year’s devastating floods that devastated Adam and Michelle’s home at Bundamba is but a fleeting memory these days.

“All we had to do was get a good dog again,” said Adam.

And he and his family have done that.

Gardam Ace is one of four pups from the litter by Adam’s former multiple Group winning sprinter, Gardam Prince out of the very smart Evil Adams. “It is a shame, but Gardam Prince has had only four litters,” said Adam. One of those is nine pups out of an unraced b i tch ca l led Janado Queen (Paddy’s Flame – She’s Adams), who is a half-sister to Evil Adams (dam of Gardam Ace).

“I trained that bitch but she kept com-ing on season,” said Adam. “I refuse to put my bitches on hormones, so we even-

tually had to retire Janado Queen.” “The pups are four weeks old and are

bred almost identically to Gardam Ace.” Immediate plans for Gardam Ace are

to bring him back to Albion Park for a Novice on a Thursday night and then head towards the Cosmic Rumble series at Lismore.

“I surprised myself the other night when I looked at his papers and realized he was just 20 months-old,” said Adam. “He has a very big future indeed, and I’m confident his sire will get some bitches after this (win).” “It’s the first litter to race, and already he’s sired a fea-ture race winner.”

Borrowed time ISADEL is on borrowed time. Isadel (Surf Lorian - Texan Beauty) brought up career win number 24, and Albion Park win 18 when she led throughout to win a 520 me-tres Best 8 at headquarters last Thursday night. She scored by eight and three quarter lengths over Tough As in 30.15, with a head to Citi Hawk third. Christina Apap trains Isadel, but she headed out last week for a two weeks holiday in Thailand. “She’ll be on the phone within minutes,” said Tony Apap of his daughter. “Wherever she is, she wants to find out how the dogs have gone.” Isadel is on borrowed time, as the Apaps have a breeding career mapped out for her, but while she is rac-ing as well as she is, they will continue with her. “If she happens to run a few bad races, then that will be it,” said Tony. “She is four in September.” Apap said the bitch went through a slump in form a little while ago but that was caused by the return of a problem with a fibula. “We had to scratch her as a youngster from the Fu-turity final at Ipswich because

of it,” said Tony. “It came back again just recently and we’ve had to work on it to get her right again.” Off to Capalaba DON’T expect to see promising Kenso Karoo back on a city track at least in the immediate future.

That’s because owner trainer, Ryan Ayre wants to take him to the straight track at Capalaba to help the dog settle down.

Kenso Karoo showed he could be top trainer, Ryan’s future replacement for dual Derby winner, Bogie King when he brilliantly won a 520 metres Novice at Albion Park last Thursday night.

Ryan will take Kenso Karoo along carefully, as the dog is just 18 and a half months-old.

“He’s eligible for the Ipswich Auction series next year, and all the age races,” said Ryan. “I don’t want to overdo him at this stage.”

“I might take him to Capalaba for a series of races to try and settle him down a bit. He can be a little too keen.”

Kenso Karoo (Collision - Eye The Tiger) is bred identically to Ryan’s star gallopers, Bogie King and Bogie Beltah (Collision - Bogie Skye), both Group 1 stars.

Eye The Tiger and Bogie Skye are litter sisters.

The youngster scored by six and a quarter lengths in 30.21, beating Not Like Bond, with three quarters of sa length to Take A Guess third.

It was his second win in four starts. Ryan raced Eye The Tiger, who

broke her neck in a fall at Ipswich. Richard Eaton-Wells pinned the neck

and Eye The Tiger came back to win four races.

“I thought he was a good thing out of the one box here last week,” said Ryan of Kenso Karoo.”

“But he had never been around the corner in a field and that can sometimes cause a young dog problems.”

“Tonight, with the benefit of that run here last week, he was a different propo-sition.”

Eye The Tiger has since whelped a litter to Bekim Bale that are now seven weeks old.

Ryan has them for sale at $2,000 for the dogs and $1,500 for the bitches.

His star brood bitch, Holly Hotpants has also just whelped to US sprinter and now Irish stud success, Kinloch Brae.

“She’s had nine (pups), five dogs and four bitches,” said Ryan. “I want $3,000 for them.”

Gardam Ace, a 30.54 winner of the Dave Brett Memorial at Albion Park, is pictured on the dais with Michael Byrne, Adam and Michelle Hines, Tony Brett, Luke Gatehouse and interested folk, after running out a seven lengths winner last Thursday night.

TROY MURRAY dominated heats of the Shane McQueen Memorial over 600 metres at Angle Park last Thursday night, training the two fastest heat winners and the second placegetter in the third heat, giving him three runners through to the final

KALDEN MAYHEM returned to his best form when he scored a dominant victory in heat one for Murray. A $2.80 elect drawn box seven, Kalden Mayhem jumped fairly and was pushed wide early before settling down third behind the pacesetting Dyna Aline with a lap to run. Railing through to second passing the catching pen, Kalden Mayhem reeled-in Dyna Aline down the back and grabbed a share of the lead at the top turn. Working to a clear lead through the final bend, Kalden Mayhem saved his best for last,

Careering away up the home straight, the son of Big Daddy Cool and Abbadale Gold crossed the line almost nine lengths clear of Dyna Aline in a fast Best Of Night 34.85, while Crazy Heart finished a close third. The reigning SA Greyhound Of The Year, Kalden Mayhem took his record to 34 wins and 19 placings from 75 career starts.

KALDEN AURORA made it a double for Murray when she took out heat two of the Shane McQueen Memorial in strong style. Drawn box five and starting at $1.95 favourite, Kalden Aurora came out running when the lids rose and showed good pace to hold the early lead over Lektra Train with a lap to run.

Showing the way by two lengths passing the catching pen, Kalden Aurora was put under pres-sure from Lasting Effect down the back straight and reached the top turn with her lead reduced to a length. Kicking out to a two lengths break through the final bend, Kal-den Aurora proved too strong for Lasting Effect and edged further ahead over the closing stages. A daughter of Premier Fantasy and Abbadale Affair, she crossed the line three and three quarter lengths ahead of Lasting Effect in a new personal best 34.97, with Paua To Rock holding down third place.

HEAD TUNER made it two starts for two wins over the 600 metres trip when victorious in the final heat for trainer, Ossie Chegia. Starting well in the market at $4.00 from box two, Head Tuner began fairly but was shuffled back through the field early, settling down third behind Kalden Komoto with a lap to run. Railing through to second passing the catching pen, Head Tuner was camped on Kalden Ko-moto’s heels in the back straight and was poised to pounce on the lead at the top turn. Switching wide and joining Kalden Komoto through the final bend, Head Tuner finished well.

The son of Head Bound and

Virus Swatter raced to the front straightening for home and kicked away over the closing stages, pass-ing the post over four lengths ahead of Kalden Komoto in a new personal best 35.22, with Jessenia Bale hot on their heels in third place.

The first two runners past the post in each heat along with the two fastest third placings will line up in this Thursday night’s final. Buck’s back! BUCKARINGA LAD registered back to back wins on the track for trainer, Narvette Treloar when he won the Greyhound Racing SA on Facebook Mixed 2nd/3rd//4th Grade at Angle Park last Thursday night. Nicely drawn in box three and starting at nice odds of $6.00, Buckaringa Lad jumped fairly and mustered good speed to take the early lead over Red Lesta in the run through the first turn. Skipping away to lead by three lengths over Red Lesta in the back straight, Buckaringa Lad was trav-eling like a winner when he reached the top turn with a four lengths break. Rounding the final bend still three lengths clear of Red Lesta, Buckaringa Lad coasted to the line in no danger of defeat. The son of Brumby Lad and Kanowna Belle saluted the judge three quarters of a length clear of Red Lesta in 30.12, with Pints De-light holding down third place. Seemingly overlooked in high grade races, despite his good strike rate in winning them, Buckaringa Lad took his career record to 20 wins and 27 placings from 71 ca-reer starts. SA wrap FLASH OF PASSION set a new time standard over the 388m dis-tance at Angle Park recently, breaking Where’s Pancho’s record of 22.13 for trainer, Tim Leraci. Starting $2.30 favourite from box two, Flash Of Passion led all the way and scored by 10 lengths over Allen Radnor in 22.04.

DARREN BALE racked-up his third straight win and was the quickest 515 metres winner at An-gle Park last Monday night, win-ning a Grade 5 event for trainer, Shaun Matcott. Wearing the check rug and starting the $2.50 elect, Darren Bale went straight to the front and showed his rivals a clean set of paws throughout, crossing the line a length clear of the determined My Third Gone in a new personal best 29.96, with Only Jess storm-ing home in third place.

L O N G G U L L Y M I C K notched his 13th career win from just 20 starts when he ran the fast-est of the day at Angle Park last Wednesday for trainer, Darrel Hearnden. The $2.90 favourite from box five when searching for his third successive win, Long Gully Mick was away fast and pounced on the early lead to make every post a winner, scoring by four and a quar-ter lengths to Vanilla Gorilla and You Bee in a new personal best 29.96.

Meeting abandoned THE ANGLE PARK meeting was abandoned just before Race 8 last Thursday night after the lure mal-functioned. The timing couldn’t have been much worse, with the eight runners in the Group 3 Breeders Plate final getting ready to head to the boxes when the problem occurred. The Breeders Plate final will be run this Thursday night.

SA

Paul Rehmann

Kalden Mayhem seemed over the odds when he took out a Shane McQueen Memorial heat in 34.85 at Angle Park last Thursday night.

Troy Murray landed a double via Kalden Aurora, who led from go to whoa in another 600 metres feature heat, clocking 34.97.

Ossie Chegia’s Head Turner proved far too good for his rivals in a round of the McQueen series, recording a new PB 35.22.

Buckaringa Lad ran 30.12 to annex a 515 metres Mixed 2nd/3rd/4th Grade at headquarters last week.

The son of Bit Chili has slipped quietly under the radar, and at just two years of age, he’s already notched eight wins at Wentworth Park following another all way vic-tory in the Macro Meats Gourmet Stake last Saturday night. The 36kg chaser has all the right attributes, good box manners, genu-ine acceleration, he rails, is strong and posts fast times.

At the start of the 520 metres event, Bye Bye Bucks was quickly into stride from box six, as too was the speedy Ella Bonita from box three.

Bye Bye Bucks was able to find the front by the first corner and rolled clear, with Cool Zack Knee slotting into second spot. Bye Bye Bucks is a bold strider and was in full flight up the back, while quality opponents were strug-gling to make any impression.

Down the side Bye Bye Bucks was well clear, with Cool Zack Knee trying valiantly, but the gap had wid-ened significantly as heads were turned for home. Bye Bye Bucks raced down the home straight on his lonesome, greet-ing the judge four lengths ahead of Cool Zack Knee in a fast 29.89, with third placed Kool Icon a further five lengths away. Bye Bye Bucks (x See Ya Senor-ita) is owned by Glen Jones and trained by Ken Lewis, who is putting

the collar around the neck of his best dog to date, whose career stats reveal that from 27 career starts there have been 13 wins and seven placings. Cool Zack Knee (Big Daddy Cool x Be My Girl), raced by Mi-chael O’Brien, has had 40 career starts for 13 wins and 14 placings, whilst the Marien Sullivan prepared Kool Icon (Big Daddy Cool x Belle Lucille) from 43 career starts has won 11 with 23 placings.

FROM a young star to a veteran performer, the win of He Knows Uno was one of the best seen at Wen-tworth Park for a long time.

Trained by Mick Patterson, the son of Primo Uno was having his 60th race start and now spends his races travelling over the long journey, keeping in mind he was a placegetter in the 2011 Golden Easter Egg. When the lids opened in the Bet-fair Blue Paws Stake it was He Knows Uno in the pink vest that was a distinct last away, while Caw-bourne Haze exited the four trap and Off My Trout from five were best into stride. Entering the straight the first time Cawbourne Haze led, however, Off My Trout was pressing strongly, while He Knows Uno had worked into third spot but was still giving the leaders a big start.

Heading to the back Off My Trout took over, quickly kicked away and looked set for victory, as despite running into second spot, He Knows Uno was still six lengths from the leader rounding the top turn. Off My Trout turned for home with a few lengths advantage but He Knows Uno was showing his cham-pion quality and charged home. Nearing the line, He Knows Uno ranged alongside and went home far too well, claiming victory by a neck over Off My Trout, running the 720 metres journey in 42.36, while Thrill-ing Frank was a distant eight and three quarter lengths away third.

He Knows Uno (x Honeymoon’s Over) has now won 25 races with 25 placings for prizemoney now in excess of $250,000.

Off My Trout (Collision x Ate Bucks), trained by Charlie Riccio, has raced 28 times for five wins and nine placings, whilst Thrilling Frank

(Bobniak x Miss Cherie) and for trainer, Russell Mansley has pro-duced 11 wins and 18 placings from 57 career starts.

LEADING NSW trainer, Andy Lord grabbed a trio of winners at Dapto last Thursday night, with Pure As being the stand-out victor. A son of Pure Octane, Pure As has recently mixed middle distance form with the half-mile journey stints, and judging by his victory in the Sportingbet Stake over 600 metres, stronger stamina is appearing in the 33kg frame. When the lids opened it was the inside drawn Femme Fatale and Sokate from two that were best to begin, with Pure As in the white vest third. This order was still the same at the one lap mark, but it was obvious that Pure As had the leading duo well covered as the field thundered into the back.

Pure As took over along the back, quickly put a good gap on his rivals and by the time heads were turned for home it was the third win coming up over the trip. Pure As streaked away down the running, greeting the judge seven and a quarter lengths ahead of Flying Albi in a god 34.75, while there was one and three quarter lengths to third placed Bronte Anna. Pure As (x Curi Lee) has now had 33 career starts for six wins and 13 placings.

Flying Albi (Texas Gold x Tran-quilizer) has now had 26 starts for two wins with four placings for trainer, Mario Azzopardi, whilst the John Aldous prepared Bronte Anna (Mogambo x Jacinta Bale) has had

just four career starts for two wins and two placings.

IN WINNING the race prior Andy Lord grabbed an unexpected victory when Kidder led throughout in the Dapto Citizen’s Bowling Club Stake after gaining a start off the reserves bench. Exiting box three, Kidder bounded straight to the front and led on settling down from Thai Champ, with the rails runner, Heart Of Barb pushing through behind them. Leaving the straight Kidder rolled clear with Heart Of Barb taking the short cut into second spot, but it was the leader that travelled well into the back. Kidder started to pull clear com-ing down the side and as heads were turned for home, she had her rivals beaten.

In the run to the line Kidder raced away, scoring by five lengths to Heart Of Barb, running the 520 me-tres trip in 30.24, with Thai Champ third, a length astern. Kidder, by Velocette out of Paris St. Germain. to date has had three victories from 11 starts.

Rising five year-old, the Mick Player trained Heart Of Barb (Fenceline x Heart Of Glass) has had 79 starts for five wins and 20 plac-ings, whilst Thai Champ (El Galo x Thai Again), raced by Daniel Browne, has produced five wins and 15 plac-ings from 38 career starts.

THE BANANA HARVEST looks good this year in Queensland, and the hubby and wife team of Frank and Tracey Hurst look set to eat

plenty following a ‘banana’ quinella in the Lakeline Butchery Stake over 520 metres. Squashed Banana led all the way to defeat litter brother, One Ba-nana, with the result just about a foregone conclusion from the time the lids rose. Squashed Banana possesses brilliant early speed and from box one was straight to the front, leading clearly into the first corner.

Working over from wider draws, both Sickness from the five and One Banana (7) tried to stay in touch, however, the leader was zipping along on his own. Off the top corner Squashed Banana was well clear, while his brother worked into second spot and then set out after his sibling.

Turning for home Squashed Banana was still looking good, even though One Banana was reducing the leeway. At the post Squashed Banana prevailed by three quarters of a length to One Banana in 30.07, with Sickness occupying third spot, a further two and a half lengths away. The quinella duo is from a De-cember 2009 litter of Collision and Bananarama, and the winner has had 29 starts for 15 wins and seven plac-ings.

Runner-up, One Banana has had 30 career starts for 10 wins and 10 placings, whilst the Marie Burton prepared Sickness (Go Wild Teddy x Restless Desire) from 18 career starts has had six wins and five plac-ings. - Ron Arnold

Following a hollow four lengths win at Wentworth Park last Saturday night, Bye Bye Bucks will now tackle the upcoming ‘black type’ Peter Mosman series, having taken out the Free For All in 29.89 last weekend.

Two Tree Hill opened the card on a bright note, handing in a smart 29.86 to annex a 520 metres 5th Grade at the Glebe venue for Charlie Lamb. The victory took the red fawn dog’s stats to eight wins from 24 attempts.

ONE OF THE GREATEST formli-nes for any punter in all three codes of racing is to follow trainers who are in the winning groove. At Wentworth Park last Friday night, two Londonderry based train-ers had grabbed winners 24 hours earlier after they both sampled suc-cess at the Dapto meeting. Frank Hurst and Pauline Moran have grabbed plenty of top prizes over the past few months, and as the kennels are getting stronger, the good run is set to continue.

FOR Frank and Tracey Hurst their 25kg chaser, Entrust grabbed her fifth victory at the Glebe circuit with an all the way victory in the Centrebet Free For All.

Exiting box two, Entrust went straight to the front over He’s So Shy and Fancy Dean, who were both well into stride from their centre draws.

Entrust held the fence leaving the straight and got away with a handy lead entering the back. Entrust was ticking over good sections and the immediate chasers

were under pressure to keep up when they left the back.

Turning for home it was all En-trust, and he went untroubled to the line to defeat Fancy Dean by one and a quarter lengths, clocking 30.10, with He’s So Shy a further two and a quarter lengths away third. Entrust (Collision x Midnight Move) overall has recorded 16 wins and three placings.

Fancy Dean continues to earn a cheque for trainer, Wally Lutiger, with 63 starts showing 23 wins and 29 placings for the Where’s Pedro and Sweet Fancy product, whilst He’s So Shy (Spiral Nikita x Lepre-chaun Pace), trained by Jimmy Mi-callef, has had 42 career starts for

nine wins and 19 placings. LONDONDERRY’S Pauline

Moran’s winning trot continued when Total Sensation made it four wins in succession by taking out the Rapid-vite Stake over 520 metres. This was a solid line-up, with the odds-on favourite, Captive looking to rack-up a hat-trick.

However, when the lids opened, supporters of the popular elect knew they were in trouble. The red runner, Bolt Lock Bolt got away well, and after Captive missed the jump, it was the rails dog that had plenty of room to move into the first corner.

The outside drawn pair, No Rules League and Total Sensation started nicely and gradually worked across the field and were well positioned leaving the straight. With the favourite out of play, the race changed complexion enter-ing the back, with Bolt Lock Bolt clear, whilst No Rules League and Total Sensation were set to pounce. The leaders started to bunch near-

ing the home bend, with Bolt Lock Bolt still holding sway but Total Sen-sation was warming to his task.

Motoring home in the straight, Total Sensation raced up and dashed to the front half-way down the straight then went home powerfully, beating Bolt Lock Bolt by two and a quarter lengths in 3032, with No Rules League back in third place, a half length further away. Total Sensation, by Pure Octane from Total Fancy, owned and bred by Leighton Winter, from 19 starts has collected eight wins and eight plac-ings.

Bolt Lock Bolt is by Hallucinate out of Queen Nikita for trainer, Marie Multari, has had 31 career starts for seven wins and seven placings.

No Rules League (Bit Chili x Carlz), trained by George Micallef, has produced 10 wins and a similar number of placings after 28 career starts with her prize money level now at $95,000, which is terrific for this 26kg chaser that has been a great earner for her connections.

Entrust notched her 16th win at her 28th start by taking out last Friday night’s 520 metres Free For All in 30.10 at Wentworth Park for Londonderry conditioner, Frank Hurst.

DAVID CROSSWELL has spent the past 46 years honing his skills as a greyhound trainer, but whilst he is one of the veterans of Tasmania’s training ranks, he says he’s still learn-ing.

Crosswell considers himself lucky to have been afforded a career that has spanned almost five decades.

“You should never become com-placent in anything you do in life, but especially in this game, because there is always something coming along that can give you a new slant on things, especially as far as training methods are concerned,” Crosswell said. “There’s a lot that I’ve learned over the years about preparing racing dogs that a few of the younger train-ers wouldn’t have come across, but I’m sure they have methods that I’ve never tried,” he said. Crosswell, 68, is very much the ‘old school’ trainer.

He leaves nothing to chance, whether it be preparing one for a big race or preparing a bitch to drop a litter. With his wife, Margaret and daughter, Michelle, the Crosswells are still a force to be reckoned with in Tasmania. A couple of the kennel’s young chasers, Hollyheath and Pendle Beri are likely contenders to represent Tasmania in the National Sprint and Distance Championships, to be held at Tattersall's Park in Hobart later this year. Crosswell knows what it’s like to win a National Sprint Championship, having been successful with Busy Vintage at Harold Park in Sydney in 1984. One of Busy Vintage’s progeny, True Vintage also contested a Na-tional Sprint final and finished sec-ond to Fremantle Echo the last time the event was held in Hobart in 1987. “I’ve had some top class dogs over the years, and one of the best was Busy Vintage, especially given what he did in the latter part of his racing career,” Crosswell said.

“His last 25 starts produced 17 wins and seven seconds, and his only unplaced run at the end was in his last race when he broke a hock and still finished fifth in the race.” “Then he went to stud and pro-duced True Vintage, and she was a sensational bitch that almost won a National Sprint final in Hobart.” “It rained like you wouldn’t be-lieve an hour before the final was run.”

“She held the fence and led them into the straight but got bogged down and Fremantle Echo swept down the outside to win by a narrow margin,” he said. Crosswell said he took True Vin-tage to Melbourne for a race at Olym-pic Park, and so fast was she travel-ling that the racecaller was calling the dog running second as the leader.

True Vintage broke the track re-cord that night. Crosswell began training at Ris-don Vale soon after his 21st birthday, and it wasn’t long before he tasted success with a great bitch named Arkle's Girl. “I got Arkle’s Girl from Mel-bourne, and she won quite a few races but ended up being a really good brood bitch.” Crosswell had a very smart dog named Summerdown Chief, and when he went to stud and mated with Arkle's Girl that litter produced some very smart chasers, including High-land Summer. The story of how Highland Sum-mer began his career is fascinating, to say the least. “I was involved with the Hobart Football Club, so I offered a pup that I bred as a raffle prize and the person

who won the pup was a friend of mine, but he didn’t want to keep the dog, so I took him home.” “He eventually sold the dog to a bloke for $200, but he later sold the dog to Nora Drysdale-Bates for $500.” Mrs. Drysdale-Bates was keen to race the dog and Crosswell retained the rights to train the dog, and he un-derstandably was nicknamed “Raffles”, but raced as Highland Summer. At his career end, the dog had a CV of which any dog would be proud. During his illustrious career, Highland Summer held two track records, won seven feature finals. had a sequence of 19 wins from his first 20 starts on the old White City track in Launceston, won a famous match race, was named Tasmanian Grey-hound Of the Year in 1980 and earned stakemoney of $17,615, which was considered a record to that time. “Highland Summer was an amaz-ing dog that was capable of doing amazing things to win,” he said. “I took him to Olympic Park in Melbourne four times for three wins.” “He only raced for 18 months, but what he did in that time was abso-lutely brilliant,” Crosswell said. When Crosswell moved from a house block at Risdon Vale to a 40-acre property at Sandford, south-east of Hobart, he turned professional. “I trained professionally for 10 years and that was one of the best periods of my training career.” “We had some of the best dogs racing in Tasmania, and even in Aus-tralia during that time. It was very exciting for all the family.” Crosswell eventually relocated to Longford where he has one of the best set-ups in the state. It boasts two kennel blocks, free runs, holding yards, open runs, various free-run yards for pups at various ages, and a mag-nificent 400-metres grass straight track. “The set-up where we are now is great. It has everything we need and it is a very relaxed environ-ment for the dogs,” he said.

He regards the grass straight track as one of the biggest assets.

“Having a grass straight track on the prop-erty is brilliant, and I’d be lost without it,” he said.

Crosswell has devised a process for running his team on the straight track but it requires him to walk the dogs from the kennel to the starting boxes at one end of the track, and that was becoming a bit of a bind in recent times, so he modernised the proc-ess.

“I bought a postie’s bike and I ride down to the end of the track and ride back so it’s not too taxing on the legs,” he said.

Illness prevents Mar-garet from being as hands-on as she used to be, but she is still a stickler for detail and helps out with the nominations.

Their daughter, Mi-chelle is still at home and works as hard as anyone around the kennels.

“This is very much a family business and it takes a lot from all three

of us and a number of friends to make it all work,” he said.

Over the years Crosswell has won just about every feature race on the calendar, and some many times.

He has won four Launceston Cups, a Hobart Thousand, a Devon-port Cup. to name just a few.

Crosswell also has given of his time on club committees both in Hobart and Launceston.

He is presently a member of the Launceston club’s committee and takes charge of all the fight-back ses-sions at the Launceston track.

“I have always enjoyed being a part of the administration side of the business because it gives you an in-sight into how everything is ticking along from an industry perspective,” he said.

But he is first and foremost a greyhound trainer with a clear view on what life offers down the track.

“I’m a bit of a realist, and the older you get you realise that nothing is forever, but I really can’t imagine life without a greyhound lead at-tached to my hand,” Crosswell re-vealed.

An all-rounder, David Crosswell rides his postie’s bike from bygone days, but now is one of Tasmania’s best trainers.

VICTORIAN RACER, Jordy Pordy was outstanding at Cannington on Saturday night when taking out the $60,000 Group 2 Britton’s Formal Wear WA Derby.

The fastest heat winner was sent out a $3.30 elect in a classy field, with six runners at single figure quotes.

The son of Bombastic Shiraz and High Tide Honey was racing for Linda Britton, who assumed training responsibilities in the Perth raid for her brother, Jeff Britton. The favourite stepped only fairly from box three before copping a fa-vourable bump that appeared to push him forward and into a share of the lead. Jordy Pordy led at the first marker in 5.70, but only two lengths covered the entire field. Into the turn Jordy Pordy crossed Al’s Special to find the paint, with the Bill Skipper trained dog checking off heels slowing the momentum of the wider runners, Go Mighty Shiraz and Our Topper.

That allowed the winner to open a two lengths break through the catch-ing pen over Al’s Special, with three lengths to Go Mighty Shiraz. Al’s Special was running the race of his life and was on the heels of Jordy Pordy leaving the back in smart 18.85.

Go Mighty Shiraz was four lengths away third, with Garett Bale tracking his run. Jordy Pordy had seen off the challenge of Al’s Special as they turned for home and powered to a two and half lengths victory in 30.42.

Go Mighty Shiraz made up three lengths on the leader to be a gallant second, with Al’s Special tiring to run third over Garett Bale. In recent years, the WA Derby has been a huge launching pad for even greater things.

The most recent winners, Allen Elroy, Pedrosa and High Earner have all gone on to compete at the elite level, and Jordy Pordy’s owner, Dean Higginbotham will be hoping 2012 is no exception. Dean Higginbotham was lucky to get across to Perth after his discount carrier cancelled his morning flight without notice.

But he did manage to secure a last minute flight with Tiger Airways.

At the post-race presentations he

said, “I was thrilled with the run, es-pecially the second split.”

“This is my biggest win as an owner, and will be a boost to plans to develop a breeding program and long-term investment in the indus-try.” The $40,000 first prize doubles the earnings of Jordy Pordy, whose career highlights to date had included a third to Dyna Bert in the Warrnam-bool Cup and winning a Vic Breeders series at Shepparton.

Higginbotham added, “He will now return to Jeff Britton’s care, and the Lara mentor has identified the Peter Mosman as his next target.” Runner-up, Go Mighty Shiraz will also be aimed at the Peter Mos-man as he heads back home to NSW with his owner trainer, Norm Becroft.

“The dog has had a great cam-paign in Perth, picking up three wins and tonight’s second during the past four weeks.”

“We will head to the Peter Mos-man next.” Irish still hot CLASSY SPRINTER, Hot Irish re-turned to WA in style with a Best Of Night 30.34 gallop in Free For All company.

The Ben Abercrombie trained, Damon Fardig owned daughter of Premier Fantasy and Lovey Craves was returning after a good Sydney

campaign, where she made the final of the Golden Easter Egg, but missed a place. Hot Irish ($3.00) headed the mar-ket, with Vocal Enforcer ($3.20) seen as the main danger.

The favourite was away quickly and found space before powering over to the fence, taking a two lengths lead into the turn after a 5.66 sec-tional. Through the bend in 13.87, Hot Irish was highballing onto the back section, three lengths clear of Big Noter and Uno Reltub.

Vocal Enforcer was pushing through to challenge for second com-ing off the back, but the bird had flown, as Hot Irish was five lengths clear. It was the 18th win from 34 starts for the 27kg bitch, who has now amassed over $86,000 for her connec-tions.

Vocal Enforcer got clear of the pack for second, with Rumble Blitz third. SATURDAY’S MEETING was dominated by the major kennels.

Linda Britton prepared a treble, with Vee Ate Mate (30.73) and Sub-liminally (30.80) adding to the Derby victory.

Andrea Dailly got some consola-tion with Garrick Bale (30.50) and Chris Bale (30.91), with both snapped

by photographer, Joe Mulder. Doubles were also achieved by John Iwanyk and Paul Stuart.

Pedros’ Finest sizzled over the middle distance in 37.22, and Kid Cudi (30.53) won the last, giving Iwanyk the bookends.

Goldie Bale demonstrated a form transformation for Stuart, saluting in 30.91 at a $22 quote, while Military Power was solid ands scored in 30.73.Roxy goes the distanceROXY MAC, for Kylie McLennan, put in a huge run to lead throughout over the 647 metres trip and annexed the $9,000 Mandurah Middle Dis-tance Challenge final.

The $9.90 hope was away slickly in the yellow vest and hit the first turn with a length break over Robert An-drew. She had increased her lead to three lengths passing the 405 metres boxes along the back straight.

Robert Andrew continued to lead the chasing pack, with No Justice starting to wind up in third place. Midway through the turn Roxy Mac was five lengths clear, with the favourite, McQueen bustling into second place but giving the winner a huge start. Despite the field getting closer in the home run, Roxy Mac was a clear three lengths winner in a slick 36.66, downing McQueen, with No Justice third.

It continues an amazing record for the January 2010 daughter of Where’s Pedro and Della Bale. A winner at 14 of her 33 starts, she has earned over $65,000 for her owner trainer.

June will be a big month for Roxy Mac, and we might see her trainer bypass the Mandurah Oaks to take on a similar field over the middle dis-tance in the much richer Paradise Street Trophy.

Jordy Pordy was greeted on the dais by Chris Halse, Dean Higginbotham, Linda Britton and Ryna Scaffidi after annexing the WA Derby, running 30.42 at Cannington last Saturday night.

DUAL Queensland Greyhound Of The Year, Dashing Corsair had his first winner as a sire when Diarmaid won a 431 me-tres Maiden at Ipswich last Tuesday. Trained by Desley Lennon, Diarmaid finished very strongly to win, and the trainer says the dog will step up to 520 metres for his next start. Dwyer and Desley Lennon trained the great Dashing Corsair for their neighbour at Churchable, Paddy Fitch. The name Diarmaid (pronounced - Dear Mid) is Irish, because Dwyer Len-non’s parents are from there. Barbary corsairs were pirates who operated out of north Africa.

The Lennons decided to keep the pirate theme going with the naming of Dashing Corsair’s first litter on the ground.

There was an Irish pirate who had a friend named Diarmaid,

Diarmaid’s litter, out of Deedee Res-cue, was born in August 2010.

Dashing Corsair was still racing at the time and did limited stud work be-

tween race campaigns. He was retired from racing in August

last year, bowing out in glory as the win-ner of the National Distance Champion-ship. Happy birthday ROCKHAMPTON had a successful 30th anniversary night last Wednesday.

The Warren Pirie trained Lakoda Princess won the 30th Anniversary Cup final over 407 metres.

Last week, I mentioned that grey-hound racing in Ipswich was 30 years old this month too.

And whilst the club didn’t have an anniversary meeting as such, I was curi-

ous to know if any readers had a copy of the racebook from that opening night. Ipswich enthusiast, Wayne Gaddes has loaned me his racebook from that first meeting, which was Saturday night, May 1, 1982.

Gaddes has been an owner, trainer, spectator, bookmakers clerk and punter since being bitten by the greyhound ‘bug’ on that opening night. The first of 10 races was won by a local, Lyndal Massey from Amberley, who downed Yessam Black Top, from box five.

There were three Free For Alls of $1000 each, and the other seven events carried prizemoney of $500. The late Bob Glindemann landed a double via Glinell Fred and Glinell Spotty.

A youthful Ron Ball scored with Tashina’s Image.

Who would have thought that night of the lofty heights that Ball would reach in his training career? There was a 732 metres Free For All

that was won by The Gallows, trained by Keith Dickinson.

The trainer had terrific success with stayers, including 1981 Queensland Greyhound Of The Year, Final Dream. Ted Meehan was the Club President, whilst committee members were Bob Wilton, John Doyle, Bill Hastie, Kevin Johnson, Bill Jones, Ken Roberts and Chris Williams. The Chief Steward was Gil Mooney, assisted by Terry O’Dempsey. Terry Spargo was the racecaller.

He now calls thoroughbred racing in the United Arab Emirates, principally in Dubai. Bevan Williamson was the lure driver.

He still performs that duty at Albion Park.

The first Club Secretary was Greta Kinnane, who was also involved with the Show Society.

And Racing Minister of the day, Russ Hinze was in attendance, as he was for Rockhampton’s opening night in that same month.

Reminiscing ON THE SUBJECT of anniversaries, greyhound racing was conduced at the Gabba in Brisbane for 21 years – from 1972 to 1993. Albion Park has been Brisbane’s headquarters since 1993.

The first race on opening night at Albion Park, February 11, was won by the John Reimer trained Tokyo de Ville.

Seven nights earlier, Tokyo de Ville won the first race on the closing night of the Gabba.

As far as the immediate future is concerned, there’s still a genuine chance that greyhound racing will relocate from Albion Park, to perhaps Logan or else-where.

If that happens in, say 2014, it would also be, like the Gabba, 21 years of rac-ing at what has become Brisbane’s sec-ond headquarters. Consider this The one constant amongst all human beings is that we all believe we are above average drivers.

COMIC SANS took out the Rapid-vite Twin Tracks Challenge final over 515 metres following-on from a strong Cranbourne heat win.

Drawn in box one as favourite at $2.20, the Kelly Bravo trained chaser was away reasonably and led them to the first checkpoint in 5.14, with The-atrical Girl second ahead of Quo Vadis and Walking Street.

Comic Sans had the pace on around to the far turn, going through in 18.95 with a good three lengths break over Walking Street and Quo Vadis was on his outer, a half length down.

Comic Sans did it comfortably to the Judge, saluting by two and a half lengths over Quo Vadis ($7.20), with Walking Street ($4.80) three quarters of a length further adrift.

Comic Sans, a son of Bombastic Shiraz and Joop Muse, is owned by Geoff Collins, and in clocking 29.58 at his first start on the track, the black galloper made it five wins in eight starts to date.

Mini not needed MINI EMILY, who qualified as a reserve for the Group 1 Sapphire Classic but was not needed there, went around in the $250,000 Quaddie Pool Guaranteed Mixed 4th/5th Grade instead and scored a very strong win.

Drawn in box one at $8.90, the daughter of Solve The Puzzle and Austin Lee was away well but didn’t have the speed to lead and was third on the fence at the first peg, where Adam Meway had the lead in 5.02 over Mepunga Geordie.

Mini Emily put the speed on along the back to claim Adam Me-way just before the second marker and put her head in front, taking the split in 18.83, with Mepunga Geordie a further two lengths back in third spot.

Mini Emily broke clear off the back and was in no danger from thereon.

She made her way to the line with four lengths to spare over Adam Meway ($3.60 fav) and a neck away third was Mepunga Geordie ($6.40).

Mini Emily, trained by Jamie Marsh for K. + V. + J. P. + S. A. Marsh, stopped the clock at the new PB time of 29.50.

The black West Aussie chaser has won three of her seven runs at the trip, as part of her 14 wins in 35 runs overall.

Gordon atones GORDON BALE, who led and was run down in a heat of the Harrison-Dawson, atoned by leading through-

out to score in the Berwick Mazda Free For All over 515 metres.

Drawn box four at $9.60, the son of Velocette and Saffron Bale came out running and had no trouble in leading them down to the first mark.

Taking the split in 5.04, it was Gordon Bale by a length over Don Chino, who had Odie For Now on his outside, a neck away.

Gordon Bale led them around to the back corner in 18.90 and had a three lengths lead over Hannie Bale, who’d worked into it in second spot, with Flip Bale handy on the fence in third.

Up front it was Gordon Bale that stuck to his task resolutely, and in the

run home and held kennelmate, Flip Bale ($16.90) at bay by a length, with Hannie Bale ($2.30 fav) the next to arrive, a neck away.

Gordon Bale recorded the equal PB time of 29.56 to make it four wins in 12 goes at the trip when taking his overall tally to 12 wins in 32 at-tempts.

The black chaser was the second leg of a winning double for owner trainer combo of Paul Wheeler and Graeme Bate.

PAUL AND GRAEME scored earlier in the night when Irma Bale ran 41.84 to take out heat three of the Group 1 RSN Sandown Cup over 715 metres.

Sent to box four as favourite at 42.40, the daughter of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale scored by two and a quarter lengths over Lektra Jay ($5.10), with Cousin Callum ($5.40) three and a quarter lengths further afield.

Mighty Miata MIATA smashed the 715 metres track record with a blistering gallop of 41.17 to take out heat four of the Group 1 RSN Sandown Cup.

Coming from box two as favour-ite at $1.20, the Paul Stuart trained stayer jumped in front and led to the first peg in 6.08, with Lady Grey on her outside, a half length down, while Wandy Neg was nice and handy in third possie.

In an ominous sign, Miata clapped the speed on and raced around to the Judge with a lap to

travel in 15.56 holding a four lengths lead over Wandy Neg, with a further three lengths to Fyna Bale in third spot on the fence.

Miata arrived at the far corner in 30.15 with a five lengths break on Wandy Neg, with a similar gap to Fyna Bale and Vintage Blend was starting to wind up in fourth.

Out in front, Miata was in a race of her own and raced to the line an eight and a quarter lengths winner over the fast finishing Vintage Blend ($6.00), with Wandy Neg ($45.20) a length and a quarter back in third spot.

Miata has won both of her starts on the track, and has now scored in 24 of her 27 career outings.

The fawn stayer, a daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird, is owned by Paul Stuart and Nichole Wheeler.

Fawn chaser, Double Jeopardy didn’t have many friends in the betting ring after he won the first heat of the RSN Sandown Cup. The $17 winner, pictured with mentor, Angela Langton, weaved his way through the field in the home straight to post a 42.07 victory.

Granduer once again had punter’s pulses pumping when he got up in the last stride to win his 715 metres Sandown Cup engagement. Near last for most of the journey, the loping half miler thundered home to collar NSW He’s My Fortune in 42.20.

PEGGY MAY scored a brilliant all the way win in last Thursday night’s Group 1 Macro Meats Sapphire Crown final over 515 metres at Sandown and continued the stellar that her trainer, Jason Thomp-son has been having of late. One of the fastest breakers in rac-ing, Peggy May ran the quickest first split in a heat the week prior, and with two slower early sprinters drawn along-side, she looked perfectly boxed in the three.

Punters had her as second pick in the betting at $3.40, just a fraction longer than her kennelmate and fastest qualifier, El Brooklyn, at $3.30 from box six.

NSW visitor, It’s A Blur in the pink vest was at $4.30, with Carol Allen out of box four at $8.30 the only other runner under double-figure odds.

Carol Allen’s kennelmate, Brenna Bale was next best at $10.90, with Witch’s Potion at $18.40, Dons Miss at $19.30 and Dream Rattler at $34.00 afforded little chance.

At boxrise it was Dream Rattler and Peggy May that were best out, while El Brooklyn was also smartly into stride, with only the two widest runners, Brenna Bale and It’s A Blur slowly away.

Showing her customary early dash, Peggy May led them to the first peg in 5.03, while El Brooklyn was on her outer, a half length down, with Witch’s Potion improving to be third.

As they swung out of the straight Witch’s Potion misjudged the bend and slammed into El Brooklyn, allowing Peggy May to scoot clear, and with most of the field suffering some kind of inter-ference from the first corner to the back straight, it was no place for the faint-hearted.

However, the carnage was only about to begin for El Brooklyn as they entered the back straight, where she was checked again and crashed into Dream Rattler, taking a tumble.

Don’s Miss and Dream Rattler were put totally out of business at that stage, and that was the end of their race.

Peggy May raced to the back turn in 18.75, and with only five left in conten-tion, it was Witch’s Potion four lengths away second, with five lengths to Carol Allen then a further gap to Brenna Bale and a long break to It’s A Blur.

On the final bend it was Peggy May’s race for the taking, as it was obvi-ous that those chasing were on a forlorn quest.

Down the running it was Peggy May first past the Judge to claim the $75,000

winner’s purse by three lengths. Witch’s Potion ran a cheeky race for

second money, with Carol Allen picking up third, two and a quarter lengths away.

Brenna Bale was the fourth one home, with It’s A Blur the last one in, as both Dream Rattler and Don’s Miss were listed as tailed off.

Peggy May stopped the clock at the new PB time of 29.42 to make it three wins in four tries at the trip.

The Casie O’Neil owned daughter of Royal Riddle and Trinity County has now raced 48 times for the excellent strike rate of 29 wins, and along with nine placings, she has collected $179,465 in stakes.

The recent Bendigo Cup winner was luckless in her previous Group 1 effort, the Australian Cup, so this victory is sweet atonement for the white and black chaser.

We caught up with her trainer, who told us, “She went really well. She did what she usually does in her races.”

“I thought she was a great chance here, as she regularly runs in harder races than this. She’s been up against all the best dogs around.”

“I’d been saying all week that she’d improve three lengths on last week’s run, and she did that.”

“She’s run 29.80 at The Meadows, so I knew she was fast enough to win it.”

Jason’s son, 15 year-old Ben, han-dled Peggy May, and it was his first Group 1 win in the capacity of handler.

“He’s handled her quite a few times before,” said Jason.

“He knows her really well and she goes good for him.”

“He does a great job with them, so it was definitely a big thrill for him.”

We asked Jason what was in store for Peggy May.

“I’ll be looking at the Traralgon Cup with her next.”

“It’s about four weeks off, then after that, well, I don’t really know, we’ll see how she goes there.”

Peggy May with the Thompson clan, Holly, Ben (Frosty) and Luke, plus a couple of friends after the speedster led all the way to claim the Group 1 Sandown Sapphire Crown classic.

Never tested or challenged for the entire 715 metres journey. Miata obliterates the Sandown Park record and continues her unbroken run of 15 straight wins.

RIP champ HIGH EARNER, who holds Australia’s stakemoney record, sadly passed away on Saturday, May 12.

When the son of Collision and Dou-ble Guess finally hung up the collar and lead he had amassed $610,070 in prizemoney. Being honest, I really don’t think this dog got the accolades he probably de-served.

Perhaps we’ve all become a little blasé about stakemoney matters, but even in today’s times, that’s still a heck of a lot of money that he won.

Forgetting anything else, to win a Perth Cup takes a strong, highly-talented dog… to win two, that’s in the freakish category.

But to win two with a retirement in between, well that’s about as good as it gets. Possibly one of the reasons this dog didn’t get headline after headline was because he was more workmanlike than some of the other top dogs we’ve had. He was the type of dog that went out there and got the job done; well, that’s how I saw him. Back in 2009 he picked-off a couple of Group 2 Derbys; the Western Austra-lian and Queensland versions.

In 2010 he ran fifth in the Group 1 Adelaide Cup before running second in the Group 1 The Temlee.

He then made the final of the Group 1 Australian Cup, where unfortunately he fell.

Like the really good dog that he was, he bounced back from that to go to Perth, where he landed their Group 1 Cup.

He followed that up by making the final of the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg, finishing eighth.

And that was to be his last start, as he went off to stud.

Six months later he returned to the track, and the break obviously did him the world of good because he came back seemingly better than ever.

Now trained in Victoria, he ventured back to Perth to defend his crown and again he took out their Group 1 Cup.

Back to Melbourne and he atoned for his second the year previous by taking out the Group 1 The Temlee.

For the second year running he made the Group 1 Australian Cup final, only this time he was runner-up.

And like 12 months earlier, he made the final of the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg, again finishing last in what was his swansong.

He left the track with 33 wins and 21 placings from 69 starts against his name, and as a triple Group 1 winner.

From his two stints at stud he has around 70 litters on the ground, with his first pups just starting off now.

The reports are good on his first crop, and that makes it a double tragedy for mine.

Farewell High Earner. Over the odds I SOMETIMES sift through the results with a fine tooth comb looking for any-thing strange, and I quite often find grey-hounds that win at prices that seem well over the odds on the TAB.

At Shepparton on May 14, a sprinter called Ruslor won the 390 metres Grade 5 Final at $21.90 for the win, one of the outsiders of the field.

This sprinter had only qualified as first reserve for this race and some would think, well, it was the reserve, so those in the field must have been faster.

And that does seem to be the logic behind the big odds about the Glenn Dainton owned and trained of Bombastic Shiraz and African Beauty.

But if the homework had been done, punters may have discovered the follow-ing…

A week prior, there were eight heats of this race run, so being first reserve meant that Ruslor was the fastest sec-ond.

In a heat, after being checked early, he went down by a half length in 22.19.

So his over the line time was 22.22. Not a bad gallop. The fastest heat was 21.99 and that

was handed in by Ruslor’s litter and ken-nelmate, African Wave.

The other heat winners were Mepunga Weber (22.05), King’s Speech (22.08), Zambora Ace (22.19), Miss Trida (22.23), Juno I’m Pretty (22.27), Oriental Lily (22.29) and Phildavian (22.38), and it was Phildavian that was the scratching.

Therefore, there was .30 between the fastest and slowest qualifier, or around five lengths if you prefer.

Surely on such a race you’d be fram-ing a close market if you were a bookie.

But this race ended up rather quirky as there was just under five lengths (.30) separating first from last, highlighting that the form from the heats stacked-up really well.

Breeding rules SEEING as this is a pretty hot topic at the moment, I thought I’d look at some “breeding rules”.

In a nutshell, there aren’t any rules, but these are my thoughts on what you probably should be doing.

Not that I’m an expert, but over re-cent years I’ve been making a lot of ob-servations and I’ve come to the conclu-sion that times are a lot different to what they used to be, and what worked years ago may not necessarily work now.

Back then, if you had a bitch that somewhere in its lines was related to some dog that won a few races, you could put it to your mate’s dog because it’d actually won a race in town, and hopefully you’d get a dog that could win you a quid somewhere.

Anyhow, if there were rules to breed-ing, we’d all do the same thing.

However, because we do things dif-ferently we do get exceptions to the norm at times.

Some of those exceptions we call ‘freaks’, and we do get them, but that works out the same as buying a Quick Pick in Lotto and winning First Division; basically it’s just a case of really good luck being on your side.

But let’s look at some of the things that I think you should do if you’re plan-ning on breeding a litter of pups.

And the first is to find the right brood bitch. The right brood bitch IF YOU already own a bitch, or more than one, then there’s a chance if you decide to breed you’ll choose one of those. That in fact might be your first mis-take.

Let’s look at things that probably should be on the plus side.

Did she race? If yes, did she win races? Where did she win them? Did she win in top grade? Did she run BON’s? Did she beat good dogs? Did other members of her litter win

races? And where did they win them? And at what level did they compete? Did she have any convictions? Did she have any bad traits? Finally, does she come from suc-

cessful lines? Okay, your answers should read

something along these lines. She won at least 25% of her race

starts, and 25% of those were metropoli-tan wins, including a Free For All.

A quarter of her wins were BON’s and she regularly raced against and was competitive with some of the best going around.

A fair percentage of her littermates

were successful on metropolitan tracks. The bitch was never pinged for failing

to chase or marring, she had a reliable racing style and raced mainly injury-free.

And lastly, her family line is full of very good dogs and top producers.

Does that seem like a tall order? Well, what I suggest you do is look

through the metropolitan winners for a period of time and note the dams of all those dogs.

Then research them and you will find that a very healthy percentage of those dams will meet a lot of the criteria men-tioned above.

In fact, if you need a bit of extra con-firmation, check out the dams of all the leading stud dogs and all the Group win-ners, and see if you can spot many that seem out of place.

If you do, it’s probably some of those exceptions I’ve mentioned.

The unraced litter sister of a cham-pion was a long sought-after commodity as a brood bitch, and history shows us that some of those left a big mark on racing, so that’s a second option.

And they are certainly preferable to a bitch that had say 57 starts without win-ning, got convictions for marring, was slow out, raced wide and whose litter-mates couldn’t run to save their lives. Selecting the sire ONCE YOU have your brood bitch to breed from, you’ll need to select a stud dog. Without even going into bloodlines yet, you need to ascertain just what type of pup you’re trying to breed.

I’ve always thought you should be looking for the perfect shade of grey.

Basically, how that comes about is finding in a sire what your bitch didn’t have.

So we’ll call the bitch black, as she was a slow early, hard-railing, dour stayer, so we need a dog that we’ll call white, so that’ll be a very fast early dog. We’re mixing “black” and “white” trying to get the perfect shade of “grey”. Fine, you may get some “white”, some “black” and some “grey”, but I say that by doing it that way you’re trying to cover all of the bases. And if you do your homework here you will find many “grey” stars about.

In fact, check out a lot of the real success stories and you’ll see what I mean.

Imry Bale being one that comes quickly to mind, as he’s a son of the great sprinter, Go Wild Teddy and his dam was the multiple Group winning stayer, Amity Bale. Mind you, that’s not a hard and fast rule, but it’s a pretty good guideline.

In a nutshell, find what your bitch was lacking in the stud dog.

That should give you a short list of sires.

After that, you just need to decide whether you want to line breed, get a double cross, outcross, use an import or any other tried and true way of pairing up two dogs.

A good place to start is to look at similarly bred bitches to yours and see what sire lines they have ‘clicked’ with, as that’s a good way of seeing if a cross works or not. Cross that works LOOKING for a cross that works can be one of the best ways to produce top class dogs. I just spotted a litter that in my opin-ion could end up top class racers. This litter is by Bombastic Shiraz, and I guess that’s as good a place to start as any.

The dam is a bitch called Aprilia, who only won two races, both at Angle Park over 515 metres.

So what’s so special, I hear you ask? Well, Aprilia is by Surf Lorian from Winsome Bluebird, making her a litter sister of National Distance champ, Blue Lorian. That in itself makes these pups look extremely well bred, but bear this in mind… When Winsome Bluebird went to Bombastic Shiraz, she produced Miata. Looks pretty good to me! After that… ONCE YOU have your bitch, worked out your sire and paired them up, you’ll have a litter of pups to deal with.

Again, there’s plenty of rearing op-tions available, and I feel the most impor-tant things are good food, plenty of exer-cise and plenty of human attention.

There are no guarantees in breeding, but if you give yourself the best chance of success, there’s a good chance you’ll achieve it.

Never be frightened to approach a successful breeder and ask for advice; figure out what things you need to know and ask, I’m sure there’ll be plenty glad to give you advice or help point you in the right direction. Your number’s up I REMEMBER many years ago when the only multiple bets that were available on the TAB were a Daily Double on the Sat-urday horse racing.

Of course, everyone tried to win these, after all, it was a novel form of betting with the hope of a good dividend.

My grandfather always took a double on the Adelaide gallops, and he always took 3 and 3.

Didn’t matter what horse it was, what its form was like, who trained it or who was riding it, he just took the two 3’s.

And oddly enough, he collected quite a few times, and some of those dividends were quite healthy too.

It took me ages to figure out why… until I realised that his birthday was on the third… so I figured 3 was his lucky number.

It is quite funny betting by just taking lucky numbers; it’s a bit like buying a lottery ticket, isn’t it?

My mate used to take 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 in Tattslotto, and as he said it had the same chance of coming up as any other six numbers.

However, after 30-odd years I reckon it has never come up, although I may be wrong.

But can the same theory apply with gambling on the dogs, just take lucky numbers and not worry about what the dog is.

For instance, how about the four 1’s or the four 5’s?

I’d actually think that four 1’s in dog racing would have a better chance of scoring than four 5’s, but numerically the odds should be the same.

But I wonder if some combinations have had more success than others.

Say 1 x 8 x 8 x 1 or 8 x 1 x 1 x 8. In fact, any combination of 1’s, 2’s,

7’s and 8’s would more than likely have had more success than combinations of 3’s, 4’s, 5’s and 6’s.

So what’s the best way to win the Quaddie?

Well, tongue in cheek, if you take the Field with the Field with the Field with the Field, I can guarantee you’ll win, although you might run at a loss over a period of time.

Or you can just throw darts at the field sheets and hope for the best. Your Say “Two Bob’s Worth” with, “I think this Wan-garatta saga should be finalised one way or the other.” Yes, it’s getting very long-winded. “Ima Quad Fan” asked, “Any thoughts on the Quaddie?” Yes, you need to pick the four winners to collect...hehe. “Walking Wounded” asked, “Do you think making racing surfaces too fast increases the risk of injury?” I think that’s something that’d take a lot of research to prove. However, I think first and foremost curators should try to prepare the saf-est track possible, and the majority seem to do that. This week’s Teaser AN EASY one for you this week - what is so important about these eight numbers?

They are; 5, 20, 25, 26, 30, 34, 42, 43.

No clues! Last week’s answers 1. Trewly Special 2. Cosmic Chief 3. Return The King 4. Meticulous 5. Give Me Five 6. Where’s Pedro 7. Over Flo 8. Regal Brett

They are all sons of Brett Lee.

Fluid loss Dehydration is a drying-out of the body due to loss of water, or of water and electrolytes.

Electrolytes are simply the body salts that are required to maintain the water in the bloodstream.

Fluid must contain a certain number of particles otherwise it will easily leak through the kidney filter apparatus and be lost to the bladder.

The bloodstream is full of particles of all sizes from large white blood cells down to these small electrolyte atomic particles such as sodium, potassium and chloride.

Whatever the size, each particle helps to retain its own small volume of water, and when all is in equilibrium then there is no dehydration and no swelling.

An excess of particles leads to the swollen condition called Oedema, which is often seen after an injury when the tissue is damaged or infected.

A lack of particles, rather than water in the bloodstream is the most common cause of dehydration. Infrequently, dehydration is due to loss of water only, then the problem can be easily cured by adding plenty of fluid to the diet, and providing a mixture of half a litre of milk with 1 litre of water to drink through the day. Ironically, a greyhound can become dehydrated by drinking too much water.

Plain water contains no particles, and

excessive water drinking allows the water to collect electrolyte particles from the bloodstream and wash them out of the body.

As electrolyte levels decline then so does the water content of the bloodstream.

The severity of this loss is easily measured by checking the packed cell volume (PCV), which is a measure of the percentage of red cells in the blood.

The normal level is 58%-60%, levels over 70% are serious, while levels over 80% are life-threatening. If the dehydration is due to loss of water and electrolytes, then fluids plus electrolytes must be given.

It is important to provide these in the correct mixture.

Because greyhounds are animals largely devoid of sweat glands, they do not lose large amounts of sodium chloride (salt) through perspiration.

Surprisingly, greyhound electrolyte metabolism is more closely related to that of cattle and sheep, rather than horses and humans.

Therefore, products like Vytrate or

Lectade will provide relief from dehydration more rapidly than other products designed for racehorses. The causes of electrolyte depletion are many and include: ▪ Infections, especially of the urinary tract ▪ Acute stress, either through exercise or heat ▪ Chronic stress, such as over work, injury or poor environment

Dietary Imbalance, for example feeding the wrong types of electrolytes high in sodium chloride, which the body does not require, and not unlike ourselves after a salty meal, the greyhound will release it to the bladder, where it takes some fluid with it.

Also a diet low in fat will make a greyhound prone to dehydration.

It is not only the camel that stores water in its fat, so too do all animals. ▪ Hormonal imbalances, mainly those coming from the adrenal glands or related to them, such as the cortisone group, which are frequently used to mask musculo-skeletal injury ▪ A visit to your veterinarian with a pre-prepared diet sheet and training regime, where they can conduct a clinical examination and blood test will usually uncover the particular cause of the dehydration

IT WAS an Irish disaster scene at Wimbledon, with only Judicial Ruling making it through to the final of the williamhill.com English Derby after heading into the night with five fancied runners.

Razldazl Jayfkay was badly baulked on the opening bend as he failed to get around Judicial Ruling while Razldazl Rioga, Razldazl Bugatti and Droopys Jet were all struggling after slug-gish starts.

The first semi-final provided a massive shock with both Razldazl Jayfkay and Razldazl Rioga eliminated in a race where the other hotly fancied runner, Bubbly Phoenix also made his exit.

Victory went to 16/1 chance, Farloe Iron-man (Premier Fantasy x Farloe Reserve), which had derived benefit from big first bend trouble.

But he was close enough to take full advan-tage of the melee and raced on to win in a flying 28.16.

Razldazl Jayfkay got off to a fast start but was challenged by fellow Irishman, Judicial Ruling, with Farloe Ironman in third on their inside.

Razldazl Rioga walked out of the inside box.

Into the corner Jayfkay just couldn’t get across Judicial Ruling and was baulked on the bend, with Bubbly Phoenix running into him.

From thereon, Farloe Ironman was clear and raced on two win by three and a half lengths from Coolavanny Bert, with Michael O’Dono-van’s Judicial Ruling third, thus qualifying for the final.

In the second semi, Razldazl Bugatti and Droopys Jet were not the best away, as Droopys Loner came away fast and moved in, causing

the two Irish runners to be crowded. Droopys Loner led up from Blonde Snapper

and Taylors Sky. Droopys Loner continued to lead them to

the home straight but then faded badly on the run-in and failed to qualify.

Blonde Snapper led on the run-in and just held Taylors Sky by a short head in 28.41, with Westmead Adonis finishing late to deprive Droopys Loner of third spot.

English Derby draw:

The box draw for the williamhill.com. English Derby, which will be run at Wimbledon’s Plough Lane venue on Saturday night.

BIGTIME KINVARA stormed his way to a big-time New Zealand Futurity victory; Thrilling Brat has advanced his way into Thursday’s big Sandown Cup final in Mel-bourne; 200 career races for What A Mate; Matanuska joins the $100K club and the Red Dog wins reaches 45, all contributed to last week’s racing action. There’s a saying in greyhound racing that box-speed is gold, and that saying was proved spot-on when the classy Lisa Ahern trained Bigtime Kinvara blasted out of the eight trap to set up a powerful victory in Friday’s $12,000 Brownzy Sports Bar North Shore NZ Futurity final in Wanganui. Also sighted taking an absolute flyer when the 520 metres traps lifted was the gold racing vest worn by the Steve Clark trained Dee Kay Em.

That pair scampered into the first turn, where Bigtime Kinvara asserted his strength to kick clear when heading down the back straight.

From that point it was simply a case of what the winning margin would be for Bigtime Kinvara.

After 29.92 seconds of intense chasing, the son of Big Daddy Cool and Flag The Bank reached the judge with two and half lengths to spare over a gallant Dee Kay Em.

Charging home late to snatch third, a further two a quarter lengths behind, was Ritza Night, who was forced to overcome some early traffic issues for Dave and Jean Fahey.

She shaded her kennelmates Jinjawinja and Know Peace.

“When he came out running and he wasn’t touched racing into the first turn, I knew then he was a big hope. And going down the back he had it won.”

“That was a great effort by him from that draw on this track.”

“I can assure you, that this win is a real big thrill for us in this kennel,” said raceday handler, Andre Poutama.

Clark’s partner, Kath Wilson was rapt with the second placing that Dee Kay Em produced.

By doing so, this daughter of Over Flo and Royal Doll flanked the efforts of her litter brothers Grizz and Peking Tom did in running the quinella in

the recent NZ Derby final. “Dee Kay Em did everything we wanted from

her. We completely relied on her box-speed, which she used to perfection.”

“I was pleased with the way she stuck to her task when Bigtime Kinvara came charging on past her – we are very proud of her,” advised Wilson.

And her co-owner, Brian Freemantle made the trip across the Tasman for this final.

“It is always worthwhile coming over here.” “Realistically, she was up against it, being a C3

dog in this final. So that was a top training effort by Steve and Kath.”

“They are going brilliantly from their new racing set-up – you can’t help but train winners in an envi-ronment like that,” stated Freemantle. And Jean Fahey said about Ritza Night, “When I saw Bigtime Kinvara in front, I knew then that we needed a miracle.”

“Ritza Night’s owner rang, saying he was real happy by her coming home so strongly from so far back in the running.”

And additional success came Ahern’s way when she won the $1,000 trainers’ prize that the Wellington Club put up for any trainer who pro-duced four or more winners during the 14-race card.

Ahern completed the meeting with five training successes.

Both John McInerney, plus the Paul Freeman and Angela Turnwald training partnership trained three winners each – to fall one win short of the criteria.

And on-course patrons weren’t neglected ei-ther, with $1,400 in betting vouchers being given away.

One name was drawn per race, with that the person drawn being given a $100 voucher to invest.

A number of the drawers were successful in turning in a profit for themselves.

The promotion assisted the Wellington Cub to generate a massive on-course turnover that eventu-ally reached $100,346. Go the Red Dog! FIVE winners during the big Pick 6 meeting at the Manukau Stadium on Sunday saw the number of greyhounds being successful wearing the red rac-

ing vest reach 45 so far during May. That means, with $100 being donated to char-

ity, that $4,500 has been raised to date. The promotion runs through to the Plasterboard

Duke of Edinburgh Silver Collar heats meeting on Sunday, June 3.

And race favourite, Matanuska carried his Pick 6 supporters through to victory in the last race dur-ing the Auckland meeting on Sunday.

In doing so, this Mike and Linda Martin owned and trained son of Big Daddy Cool and Idol Appeal became that latest inductee into the $100,000 stakes earning club.

Matanuska, who was resuming from an injury spell, pinged away from the five trap to lead throughout in his 318 metres sprint.

It was his 94th race start and he has now clocked up 54 race wins, and after adding a fur-ther 27 minor placings, now sees his career stake earnings standing at $100,415.

Buddy Broke landed a 645 metres event at Wanganui last Friday, winning by three lengths in 37.68 for Bill Hodgson.

Bigtime Kinvara, trained by Steve Clark, won the NZ Futurity final at Wanganui last week, recording a fast 29.92 over 520 metres.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, May 24th 2012 – Page 57NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

LITTLE MOTHER’S brilliant career shows no sign of stopping.

The freakish chaser won her 84th race, yep, 84 wins, at Manawatu re-cently.

Five years-old this September, the daughter of Big Daddy Cool and Zilla just keeps turning up at the track and winning.

Sent to the ‘Shaky Isles’ after her first two outings in Australia were two well-beaten unplaced runs at Richmond mid 2009, the black bitch has become an institution of New Zealand greyhound racing.

She has been beaten just five times from her past 32 starts and her competitive streak shows no sign of waning.

Little Mother is a drawcard wher-ever she races, and although 16 shy of a century of victories, it would be a crying shame if she was to fall short of this magical number.

Milestone VETERAN chaser, What A Mate posted his 200th race start at Ma-nawatu on May 14.

Unfortunately the epic appear-ance didn’t have a happy ending.

The four and a half year-old cam-paigner didn’t bother the judges, fin-ishing hot on the heels of the place-getters in fourth place, just one and a half lengths from the winner, Bigtime Karen.

A centurion twice over, What A Mate’s last success was at Hatrick back on December 2, but since that success has endured a run of 29 de-feats.

He has managed 17 wins and 16 placings in his long career but his last outing suggests he is still competitive and obviously loves the chasing ca-per.

Live in hope CESSNOCK trainer, Jimmy Black-wood is as tough as teak.

For two years the veteran trainer has battled bureaucracy in an attempt to clear his name over a kennelling incident on a NSW country track.

He’s run into dead ends and hit plenty of brick walls in his pursuit of getting his case looked at, which

would have dampened other people’s resolve and spirits. .

“It’s been a long drawn out saga but I’m starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Finally after emails, letters and fruitless appointments, Jim has found the ear of GRNSW’s Eve McGregor.

“I have a meeting with the new Integrity Officer in the next few weeks and hopefully this issue will have an ending.”

“All along I’ve asked for a fair hearing, and if it had of been ad-dressed initially, this case would never escalated as to how it did.”

Jim Blackwood epitomises the Aussie Battler tag and maybe he will get his day in the sun.

One to go KANSAS MOONLIGHT’S Monday night Maiden win at Sandown Park on May 14 enabled the black chaser to finally break his duck.

The win was significant for the member of this outstanding litter of Bombastic Shiraz and the USA bred bitch, Greys Lemon Ice, as Kansas Moonlight, prior to his first success, was one of two from this litter that had yet to post a victory.

Cloak Of Gold, Dream Rattler, Dude Rancher, Ice Mover, Ice Trucker, Kansas Turnpike, Motivator Missy and Treger Tastic have all lived up to expectations and won their share of races.

Only Lemon Ice has yet to make an appearance on a racetrack.

Amazingly, 27 of the litter’s 28 wins have been on metropolitan tracks.

The USA injection of Greys Lemon Ice genes coupled with Bom-bastic’s Shiraz’s incredible strength and fanatical chasing qualities have definitely assisted this young litter to handle the tougher city style of rac-ing.

Old Moorabin boy APOLOGIES to Gary Selkrig.

NGF made reference to “Gus” following the Bombers, when in fact he is an avid Saints supporter.

We should have noticed that halo. Sorry “Gus”, but you can still get

on the Bombers bandwagon as we fly towards September.

The Devon Meadows trainer pro-vided the quinella in the eighth race at Horsham on May 15 when 2012 Warragul Cup winner, Stagger de-feated kennelmate, Mario Chief in a sizzling 26.92.

The $2.80 dividend won’t take you far on a tram, but any winner is welcome.

Investments for the future THE STORK was spotted at Bunyip delivering a litter to the USA bred San Tan Scuffy.

Purchased by World Class Sires’ Geoff Collins, the red and fawn bitch only had two starts on Aussie soil before she ruptured her Achilles when a game second at her January 8 Sandown Park debut.

A daughter of My Rooster and San Tan Dog Gone, the red and fawn 28.7 kilogram bitch delighted her new owner when she won first-up at War-ragul’s Logan Park in a BOD 26.16 in late December last year.

Showing early pace, she was never headed in that Maiden win and there were certainly high expectations of her.

Sadly her career was halted after the Sandown Park appearance, but Geoff has high hopes for her off-spring.

Mogambo is the proud dad, and considering the influence the Yank bloodlines have had with our colonial lines, this litter will arouse plenty of interest in the next couple of years.

Whilst on the enterprising stud-master, he informed OTL that he and Robert Britton have acquired another couple of American chasers.

No doubt the success of Austra-lian Cup winner, Zara Zulu has al-lowed him to open up the cheque book and he purchased Loose Wire (Flying Penske – Okgo Box To Wire) for a reported $15,000 at the recent Abilene meet.

Britton parted with $12,500 for a promising youngster, CTW Cheryl’s Hot, who had shown a nice turn of speed in a trial session.

The Lara trainer has tasted suc-cess previously with American stock, his current middle distance chaser, Sequoia, (Kiowa WW Brother - Time For A Party) holding her own in town, winning twice at The Meadows and also at Sandown Park.

Both trainers realise the gamble they take when purchasing these young international chasers, as they have to be quarantined in their home country for a further five months and then spend another four weeks at the Spotswood AQIS property before they are allowed to join their new kennels.

Not forgetting the air fares, add another $5K to the bill and it’s not a cheap outlay.

But the investment is long-term, with both bitches expected to ‘click’ with our lines once their racing ca-reers have finished.

Familiar face GOOD to see Darren McDonald back in town.

The champion trainer fronted up at The Meadows yesterday, Wednes-day, May 20, with Ascari, engaged in a Grade 5 event over the 525 metres trip.

“Macca” has been battling a seri-ous illness over the past six months, but will have been buoyed by the re-cent form of his beloved Bombers.

Ascari, a former NSW chaser, has drawn perfectly in the cherry alley, and with a Grade 4 victory to his credit at Wentworth Park back in late March, looked too classy and strong for his rivals.

Big scalp NOT many chasers in Australia can boast a win over one of the pre-race favourites for the williamhill.com English Derby, currently being con-ducted at London’s famous Wimble-don Plough Lane venue.

The final will be run this Satur-day night, and Razldazl Jayfkay is

expected to make the final six dog field.

Back in August last year, Simple Class defeated the hot Irish sprinter by two lengths at Shelbourne Park in 29.87.

Simple Class, along with a couple of kennelmates, emigrated down un-der with their youthful trainer, Tommy O’Donovan, who now trains out of Lara.

Form guru Boris Bertschik, known trackside as “The Oracle”, detected the form line when research-ing The Meadows May 19 meeting.

Simple Class hasn’t set the world on fire since arriving from the ‘Land of the Leprechauns’, but did display his potential with a stunning 34.37 victory over Sandown Park’s 595 metres trip on March 11.

It’s a big ask for international chasers to switch from an outside lure set-up to the Aussie inside system but this black chaser, a son of dual Eng-lish Derby winner, Westmead Hawk and Lady Climber has backed-up his Irish profile with Sandown Park ef-fort.

Let’s hope he can continue to fly the famous Irish colours with more success on the track.

Pick of the litter QUEENSLANDER, Reg Kay is amongst Australia’s leading owner breeders, so his stock bring big prices when offered for sale.

But in November 2009, Kay made a gift of an impeccably bred four months-old puppy to the then 17 year-old cerebral palsy sufferer, Corey Clark.

Corey’s grandfather, Cliff Clark, a successful Hunter Valley trainer, produced the aptly named Teenage Dream for wins at The Gardens on May 4, and again last weekend.

“Corey met Reg when he was in Sydney two years ago and was keen to obtain one of his pups for me to train,” Clark explained. “There was a litter by Reg’s former champ, Knocka Norris from Size ’Em Up, which were for sale for $10,000 each.”

”But when Reg met Corey he was so taken with the lad that he gave him a free pick of the litter.”

“Corey chose a bitch, and as Teenage Dream, she has won in 29.54 and 29.68 in her latest wins at The Gardens.”

********** EDGE, named after the guitarist in U2, favourite band of his owners, Jenny and Graeme Barnett, has been given a week off after his second straight win at The Gardens.

The 19 month-old “baby” won a May 5 Maiden heat at the Newcastle track in 29.62, the fastest time of the meeting, before cutting that to 29.51 in another Best Of Night effort last weekend.

The Barnetts breed, own and train at Reedy Creek, near Singleton.

With Graeme working 12-hour shifts in a Muswellbrook coal mine, it is left to Jenny to juggle house-work and gardening with looking after the dogs.

Edge is from the Barnetts’ ill-fated bitch, Belle Tara, who smashed

a hock when about to have her first race.

“Because she was a daughter of our Bonnie Shiraz, dam of Inner Force and Blue Punisher, we decided to breed from her,” Jenny said this week.

“Belle Tara whelped Edge in October, 2010, but died four months later.”

Graeme Barnett was destined to be involved with greyhounds.

His father, Bill raced 1965 Na-tional Derby winner, Chariot Charm, and owned and trained 1987 Paws Of Thunder victor, See Yah.

********** NORAH HEAD trainer, Pat McKinnon, who won seven Wen-tworth Park races, three over 520 metres and four at 720 metres via with Tarawi Strides, has a worthy replacement in Big Cliffy.

McKinnon only ever trains one greyhound, and bought Big Cliffy at 16 months from Warnervale breeder, Barry Wilson.

The dog has just won his fifth race in 12 starts.

“Big Cliffy can blow the start but his run-home times are outstanding,” McKinnon said. “And whilst his five wins have been from 450 metres to 515 metres, he will definitely get 600 metres and hopefully make his mark over 720 metres.”

********** SQUASHED BANANA is a fool-proof beginner in the mould of Ro-man Earl, Amethyst Queen and Turbo Top, so it’s no surprise that trainer, Frank Hurst is setting him for the Tweed Heads Galaxy.

The 420 metres Border Park fea-ture sprint, with a $25,000 first prize on June 9, is NSW’s richest non-TAB event.

Lektra Fly, raced by Phil Lenehan and trained by Lisa Delbridge, landed the City of Casey Final at Cranbourne on May 13. The hardened chaser has now won 23 of his 92 starts. - pic courtesy Clint Anderson of Blue Stream Pictures

The 12-race card eventually netted two winners from the red box, with Bokarm Georgie highly impressive for Bob Merillo in the J & C Bullen Roofing Stake and Black Attitude too classy for his rivals in the Brock Paine Stake

Coursing season kicks-off THE Lang Lang Coursing Club conducted the first coursing meeting of the 2012 season last Sunday. All was looking good for a great meeting; with the weather forecast for a sunny and mild day, with the temperature hovering around 15° ... and no sign of rain. Although when heading to Lang Lang before 8.00am it looked a bit dodgy weather-wise, the weather bureau got it right and the drizzle dissipated, and a fine day’s coursing was had by all. The nominations made our target of 80, and 10 events were conducted. This year our Sunday coursing meetings are going ‘head to head’ for nominations with our track racing cousins, the TAB meetings at Healesville, Sandown and Sale. The Lang Lang Coursing Club is no stranger to conducting a well run meeting, and this meeting was no exception. The track was in excellent condition, so too was the food, the lure driving... well every-thing. Many thanks go to the volunteers who run these clubs. Ever wondered how many hours of their own time they put in so that coursing and the clubs can continue? Heaps! Amstel Trophy THE FEATURE EVENT on the program was the Amstel Trophy, sponsored by Amstel Golf Club in Cranbourne. From a pretty handy field the two finalists to emerge were ‘Snowy’ Bindley’s Where’s Hannibal “off the red” and Russ McRae’s Manx Missile “off the white”. For those uninitiated in coursing, the dog wearing the red collar exits the slips on the left side (rail side on a circle track) and the dog wearing the white collar exits slips from right side (outside). With both greyhounds being experts out of slips, the start was even, but upon reaching the half-way mark, Manx Missile was gaining the ascendency and continued to show Where’s Hannibal a clean set of paws. Last year’s NCAV Derby winner eventu-ally took out the event in a very handy time. Event 2 was the Silver Eagle Cooling Vest 1 Win Stake. The reserve gained a run after the scratching of Merindah Kahn and put his name up in lights, defeating My Girl Spic in the first

round, then Ironic Twist in the second round and Only Bluffing in the final. To reach the final, Only Bluffing defeated Joie De Vivre and Amsona Babe. MAIDENS FIVE Maiden stakes were conducted, two for the bitches and three for the dogs, and there was a mixture of form in these events. Some greyhounds had never coursed, whilst others had some experience, so it was hard for our ever-consistent bookmaker, Gary Thomas to set a book. But as is the case, there’s always some punter who will get under the bookie’s guard, and this was no exception. The clock never lies, and most trainers know what a good time is. They might try and get under the bookie’s guard, but Gary is there at the following cours-ing meeting. BITCHES ‘Snowy’ Bindley’s Minnie Power defeated Adam McNamara’s Madge Allsop in the first bitch Maiden event, while the next bitch Maiden was won by Adam McNamara’s West-mead Oak, who defeated Sindy Steiner’s Mizzy Maldini. Westmead Oak and Madge Allsop are half-sisters. DOGS Dirty Prince took home the bacon for the Grills/Vigor team of Lara when “Dirty” defeated Tony Jones’ Federation. Merv Patching brought Yardbird coursing for his first tilt at our sport, and he defeated Ian Dann’s Ultra Spin. The final event for the boys, and this one saw Brett Mackie’s Napalm Red that defeated Dave Dawson’s Hanadarko. THE PUPPIES BITCHES With only one bitch puppy event, we may have seen the ‘one to beat’ for the Oaks. My Girl Scarlett gave an impressive ac-count of her coursing skills in her three courses, running great times for a young bitch. The Dave Dawson trained My Girl Scarlett defeated Marion Clay’s Cosmic Affair, both of those bitches knew every blade of grass on the Lang Lang track, so there was no home ground advantage here. DOGS Colin and Sue Dalton had a double with their puppies, Quincy (his mother, Cyclone Babe was handy bitch, snaring a Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championship a few years back). Quincy defeated Ken Height’s Code Nine. Be Good Billy, another of the “Dalton’s team, defeated J. Griffiths Bran Nue Nite. Under the red top FOR THOSE who attended our meeting at Lang Lang, they would have seen the NCAV’s new venture. Yes, Coursing is going to push the boundaries this year and we’re into the retail market. Yep vests, caps, stubby holders, lanyards to hold your trainer/attendant ID’s, plastic pockets to fit the new Greyhound ID cards are also on the horizon. All kinds of things are for sale, look for the red gazebo, and grab yourself a bargain. New responsibilities THIS YEAR the NCAV is taking a whole new role in coursing. Our new Secretary, Carolyn Mills is taking the nominations by phone or online. Carolyn also has the responsibility of grading the meeting under the review of GRV. She will create our racing programs after GRV have ‘drawn’ the meeting, which is apart from the other duties performed by the secre-tary, which are endless! If you have any queries about coursing, Carolyn can be reached on (03) 5998 4614 or via email: [email protected]

There is also loads of information on our website www.ncavictoria.org Next meeting The next meeting will be conducted at the Melton Club in Bulmans Road on SATURDAY, JUNE 2. Did you all get that, it’s gonna be SATUR-DAY racing. This meeting will see their feature event for the 2012 season being conducted. Long-standing supporter of coursing, Bill Lambert will sponsor the Western Saws Cup. If you’ve got a greyhound that needs a change of scenery, you need to “Catch on to Coursing”, if not for your own sanity then cer-tainly for your greyhounds! We’re a great bunch of people, who have a fun day out. - Heather Villinger
