Kelsos Guardian (Kelsos Fusileer-Kelsos Hifalutin), who raced impressively at the NGA Fall Meet, ran his record to 10-2-2-1 in 18 starts at Mardi Gras in the 3/8-mile race. The second Heat of the Derby goes this week, with all eight finalists in a re-match, only with a new post position draw. If Guardian wins again, the stake is over. If another entry wins, that winner and Guardian will meet in a winner-decides-all match race.

WOW, what a week of greyhound racing.

The Magic Maiden semis at Wentworth Park last Friday pro-duced some magic performances.

The Golden Easter Egg semis at Wenty the following day did the same.

And what about Miata! Oh, and way up at Lismore a

great friend of mine, the unassuming but very successful dog man, John Free was walking around with his head held high after a lowly Maiden victory last week.

More of that later. The very strong common theme

here is Malawi’s Prince (Malawi - Duchess Marina), the former Olym-pic Park track record breaker and champion sire.

I remember some years ago when his progeny were racing.

One “expert” of the day often criticized the willingness of Ma-lawi’s Prince’s progeny to do their best when the going got tough.

But today, Malawi’s Prince is found everywhere within pedigrees, and duplicating him is often a recipe for success.

So much for some “experts”. Which brings me to Tifia

(Collision - Tifi)m who scorched around Wentworth Park in a semi-final of the Magic Maiden, clocking 29.77, and runs this Saturday night in the rich final.

Tifia is line bred 3x4 to Ma-lawi’s Prince, and I suggest to every-one who reads this column (all three or four of you) to take the closest look at just where Malawi’s Prince is positioned on both sides of this pedi-gree.

It is a position of great impact. I remember reading on one of

those websites dedicated to dissect-ing greyhounds, the greyhound world and especially pedigrees, that the cross of Bombastic Shiraz over a Collision bitch had not worked.

The fact both are relatively young in their stud influence made a mockery of this statement.

It’s way too early for such state-ments to be judged.

The cross of Bombastic Shiraz over daughters of Go Wild Teddy pops up everywhere with city win-ners.

Take a very close look at that

“nick”. It introduces Malawi’s Prince in exactly the same position as does a cross of Bombastic with Collision bitches, and vice versa.

I never had any doubt Bombastic and Collision would “nick”.

Malawi’s Prince is too great an influence.

Tifia is out of the city class stayer, Tifi (Bombastic Shiraz - Chili Berger), a sister to Bit Chili, etc.

Fully Advanced (Collision - Okay Supreme) is bred on the same cross and won a huge GOBIS Maiden at The Meadows.

Okay Supreme is a litter sister to Velocette.

So let’s all put Collision bitches to Velocette to replicate the cross that produced Fully Advanced, I hear you all say.

NO! The duplication of Malawi’s

Prince will not appear in the same extremely important position.

Look at the pedigree of a bitch called Olive Millie (El Galo – Go Go Sutro), a finalist in the National Futurity early in the year.

Her dam is by Collision, and once again Malawi’s Prince is brought into the pedigree 3x4, and

again in that most important of influ-ences.

There are many, many other in-stances.

Collision is certainly going to be a HUGE influence as a brood bitch sire, and his position as the damsire of future stud dogs will be just as important as he is now.

Whilst Tifia was impressing eve-ryone with her 29.77 semi-final vic-tory, Velocity High’s victory also interested me as well.

The bitch is one of the first start-ers sired by High Earner (Collision - Double Guess), who carries a sig-nificant double to Malawi’s Prince 3x3.

I was a bit dubious when I heard Les Bein put Bogie Skye (Surf Lorian - Bogie Benz) to High Earner.

It brought in yet another cross of Malawi’s Prince, this time via a SON… a great balance.

Surf Lorian and Collision are developing a “nick” of sorts.

Bogie King, the dual Derby win-ner and a 29.50 winner around Wenty Park, is by Collision out of Bogie Skye. I t was natural for Les Bein to

want to try to recreate Bogie King and his star littermates by putting Bogie Skye to a son of Collision.

Which brings me to John Free, that Northern Rivers dog man who has a special touch when training greyhounds.

He’s a tall, lanky and softly spo-ken man but always comes up with a nice dog.

John bred the former star Victo-rian staying bitch, So Seductive (Go Wild Teddy - Smiles Are Free).

John produced Junior Phantom (Special Phantom - Siam Smile) to win a Maiden at Lismore.

What’s so special about that, I hear you ask?

Well, Junior Phantom is a real home-bred, and I love nothing more than breeders having faith in their own stock, matching them together, and then seeing the results of their endeavours work out successfully.

John tells me the entire litter can run, but they are strong and seem certain to run distance.

Special Phantom (Token Prince - Jessie’s Cape) was a real money-spinner for John Free, winning 33 races.

His second dam, Free Cape is

also the second dam of So Seduc-tive.

Junior Phantom’s dam, Siam Smile (Allegro Jet - Star Print) was also bred by John.

She won at Albion Park, Lis-more, Casino and Grafton.

But what John Free did when he put Siam Smile to Special Phantom was to bring in a very special cross.

Jessie’s Cape, the dam of Spe-cial Phantom, is by Arelem from Free Cape.

Arelem is by Best Of Blue. Free Cape is by West Cape. Allegro Jet, the sire of Siam

Smile, is by Toss The Teddy (a son of West Cape) and his dam, Blue Series is a daughter of Best Of Blue.

So, Jessie’s Cape and Allegro Jet are bred on a reverse cross.

Putting together ancestors bred on similar but “balanced” pedigrees can really upgrade for racetrack suc-cess.

Siam Smile is line bred to the former champion Queensland race and brood bitch, Gallant Anne.
