This new format
for the Snap
Judgments column!
So much more
room to share our
feelings with the
world in three sen-
tences or fewer.
And pictures!
W E R E N O T S O S U R E
About the Amy Winehouse biography
to be written by her father. The
proceeds go to children who are
disadvantaged through
illness and substance
addiction but his goal
of writing it to help with
my personal recovery
seems a bit off.

The season finale of Breaking Bad,
which somehow gets better with each
passing season. The long-anticipated
showdown between Walter White and
Gustavo Fring was as, er, explosive
as we hoped. There is only one
season left, though thankfully it
will be a longer-than-usual 16
episodes.

Bacardi Oakheart smooth spiced rum. While
were hardly experts in all the manifestations
of the venerated Caribbean spirit, the styl-
ized bat logo and promise of a rum straight
from the heart of a charred oak barrel had us
thinking more about our Halloween party cos-
tume than hints of cinnamon, dates and burnt
molasses. In that case, the Oakheart might
make for the perfect pirate prop.

World celebrates MichaelJackson the only way it
knows how: by listening toCee Lo and wishing the Black
Eyed Peas were there.
Dont worry, Drakesnew album is coming,
eventually. Can we getyou a coffee and some
Shatner while you wait?
Samuel L. Jacksonjoins Twit ter, and
then, for symmetryssake, Jonathan Taylor
Thomas does, too.
Classy fellow Michael Ondaatjedecides hes won enough GGsand takes The Cats Table outof the running for the prize.
Can Tim Allens newshow be the next
Playboy Club?
The movie Drive inspires manto throw hot dog at Tiger Woods.
121 years in jail for thecreep who forced world
to look at nude pictures ofScarJo? Seems fair.
Whitney Houston refuses tobuckle up on an airplane. If youdid it, itd be dumb. For her, the
operative four-letter d-wordis diva. Sorry, thems the rules.
Does it involveOwen Wilson?
Steve Martin, JackBlack, birds ... what,do you have some-thing better to do
this weekend?
I show up to Jackies tea party with a box of Mae Wests undermy arm.
I guess withPETAhavingmade its crackdown, I say, itsnowup to ushumansto reclaim thetea partyfromcircuschimpanzees.
PETA wouldnt letyou serve this crap to a monkey, shesays, taking thesnackcakesand chucking them onto thekitchencounter. The guests children ransackthem andrun upstairs.

I call up Howardto tell himSaturdays picnicis on.Theweathers going to be gorgeous, I say.
Spoiler alert!Howard yells. When givingaway whats go-ingto happen, have thedecency to first sayspoileralert.
I thought that wasonly formovieplots, I say. Not theweather.
From nowon I want to keep everythinga surprise, he says.I dont wantto livemy lifewithonefoot inthe future, becausethatll mean havingonly onefoot in thepresent.
And that wouldleave you without a foot in the nut house?
I ask.Imso committedto this, he says, unimpeded, that Imnot
evengoingto usethe futuretense. You just did.DidI?he asks.Well, maybe I dont knowwhat thefuture
tense is.Good luck with it, I say. I haveto goshopping for the pic-
nic, so Ill seeyou later. Please, hesays beforehanging up,dont tell me that!Personally, I love thinking about thefuture. I dont think Ive
everthrown outa singlefortune cookiefortune. I dont go so farasto foldtheminto mywallet, butI dousually hangon tothemin some way, maybe tossing them into a sock draweror placingthem in thepagesof a book Imreading.Theressomethingaboutthrowingone out thatfeels likean actof bad faith, be-cause allprophecies about thefutureshould be taken seriously even iftheyre propheciesthatcome incookies atthe end ofamealof moo goo gaipan.
I also love theidea of serendipitously re-discoveringthese
predictions of thefuturein thefuture holding them in myhands andthinking about what once could have been, butnever
was, yet might, one day, still be. The futureoften feelslarger, more boundless, than thepast, or thepresent.Perhapsit needstobe because itis wherewe store our hopes.
At the grocerystore, the first thingI throwinto my cart is abox of Mae Wests. The second is a bag of fortune cookies.
Spoiler alertsahead, Ill tell Howard, slipping a fewinto hishands. Jonathan Goldstein is thehost ofWireTap on CBC RadioOne,airing Saturdays at 3:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 11:30 p.m. Fol-low him on Twitter @J_Goldstein.
