Registered Scottish Charity No SC 035765 > National Festival of Youth Theatre 2012 Event Report The National Festival of Youth Theatre (NFYT) is produced by Promote YT, the national development body for youth theatre in Scotland, and is the largest open platform for youth theatre performances and training opportunities anywhere in the UK. This annual festival was established in 2004 and is a vibrant celebration of the creativity and diversity of Scotland’s youth theatre sector,showcasing both youth theatre provision and production. Each year the NFYT programme features a wide range of performance, training and social events.Together, these activites create a positive, collaborative atmosphere and boost young people’s confidence, while fostering strong links between individual participants and regional youth theatre groups. The growing public and media profile of the event, together with its focus on participation, accessibility and inclusivity strengthens the profile of the youth theatre sector in Fife and throughout Scotland year on year. NFYT 2012 took place from 13-16 July at the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes and was the largest festival to date. The festival’s performance and workshop programme took place within the Rothes Halls, and the event also showcased outdoor performance work, as well as hosting and participating in the National Theatre of Scotland’s Five Minute Theatre live online event. NFYT has literally changed my whole outlook on theatre and what it represents, not only as a career, but as a life built around passion. Thank you so much. NFYT2012was produced in partnershipwithONatFife andwas core funded throughFifeCouncil’s Strategic Events InvestmentProgramme. The eventwas sponsored byShell UKLtd.

Education,outreach and accessworkwas supported byTheBankofScotlandFoundationand theMacRobertTrust. Creative supportwas provided by theNationalTheatreofScotland.TheKingdomShoppingCentre provided venue andmarketing support in kind.

ACommitment toFifeSince 2010NFYThas been instrumental in promoting Fife as a central hub for youththeatre provision in Scotland, supported byONatFife and the FifeStrategic EventsInvestmentProgramme.

Over this period the festival has engaged young people, audiences and businesses acrossFife. It has brought theatreworkshops to local schools, site-specific performances topublic spaces,access projects to new and diverse audiences and hundreds ofyoungparticipants fromacross Scotland to Fife.

NFYT teaches young people how to be an audience,vitalfor developing our future theatre audiences in Scotland.NFYT 2012 Group Leader

VenuesTheRothesHall,Glenrothes (operated byON at Fife) has been home toNFYTsince2010.The venue provides two performance spaces aswell as additional break-outrooms and foyer space for artistic workshops and social events.Workshops also tookplace in shop units oftheKingdomShoppingCentre (attached to theRothesHalls)and theGlenrothesYMCA building.

In a newpartnership for 2012,camping accommodationwas provided by theBigTentFestival at FalklandEstate situated 7miles from theRothesHalls.NFYTprovideddaily shuttle buses between the campsite and theRothesHalls aswell as buses to andfrom the local railway station on arrival and departure.

ParticipationEach year,PromoteYTputs participation at the heart oftheNFYTprogramme.NFYT2012hosted 13performancesand42artisticworkshops. Itwasattendedby17youththeatregroupsfrom12differentregionsofScotlandaswellas one international group from the Republic of Ireland. Outreach work took the NFYT experience to two Fifesecondary school pupils and we provided employment to 10 creative artists. In addition, six festival volunteersgained valuable experienceworking as part ofa large-scale arts event.

Inadditiontothesectoral andparticipatory focusofNFYT,apublicaudienceof172attendedperformancesoverthethree days,aswell as a significant online audience for the FiveMinuteTheatre online broadcast.

A total of815 people actively took part in NFYT2012.

PerformanceProgrammeEach year theNFYTperformance programmeaims to showcase and celebrate the diversity ofScottishculturewith a broad representation ofwork produced by youth theatres fromacross Scotland. In addition, theprogrammepresents guest performances fromoutwith Scotland to encourage creative international exchange.

TheNFYT2012 performance programme included performances featuring devised,new-writing, contemporary,interactive andmusical theatre.

AFifeSecondarySchoolsOutreachProjectBuilding on a pilot project in 2011, the NFYTFife Secondary Schools Outreach Project offered a unique youththeatre experience to local young peoplewith the aim ofpromoting regional awareness ofthe festival andraising the profile of local youth theatre opportunities.

SponsoredbyShell UKLtd the outreach project delivered free in-school youth theatreworkshops to 74 inadvance ofthe festival weekend.Every participating school pupil was given a complimentary ticket to see anNFYTperformance oftheir choice.

BArtisticWorkshops*NFYT2012 hosted 42 artistic workshopswhich engaged all NFYTparticipants in skills-development opportunities.Thesewere delivered by six leading organisations and freelance artistic practitioners,and offered high-qualitytraining in a diverse range ofskills including: workingwith text, verbatim theatre,dance and actingmasterclasses.

C TheNationalTheatreofScotland’s FiveMinuteTheatreNFYT2012 proudly hosted theNational Theatre ofScotland’s award-winning project FiveMinuteTheatre.

FiveMinuteTheatre is a unique theatrical endeavourwhich really doesmake all theworld a stage.NFYTparticipantswere offered the unique opportunity towork in small groupswith a theatre practitioner to createa short piece oftheatre on the theme of‘youth’.This piecewas then performed in the FiveMinuteTheatre hub–an empty shop unit in the KingdomShopping Centre transformed into a fully functioning studio theatre–andtransmitted live online across theworld.

AccessBuilding upon the success ofthe pioneering NFYT2011 DeafAccess Project,NFYT2012 sawPromoteYTcontinue itswork in partnershipwith Solar Bear Theatre Company to ensure that NFYT2012was accessible to deafaudiencesofall ages and young deaffestival participants.

The following deafaccess infrastructurewas successfully put in place:

> British Sign Language interpretation ofall performances,workshops and events.

> The provision ofcommunication supportworkers

> Deaf-awareness training for all members oftheNFYTstaffteam

This aspect ofthe festival is central to PromoteYT’s aim ofmaking youth theatre opportunities accessible to everyyoung person in Scotland.The legacy oftheNFYT2012DeafAccess Projectwill equip Scotland’s youth theatresectorwith the understanding and confidence to open up regional youth theatre activity to all young deafpeople.

RE:LOCATION2012Scotlandwas privileged to be one ofonly six nations invited to take part in RE:LOCATION 2012,a pioneeringinternational youth theatre project held in Stavanger,Norway and designed to celebrate excellence in youth theatre.To represent Scotland at this unique event,PromoteYT teamed upwith theNational Theatre ofScotland,VisibleFictions and youth theatres across Scotland to create a bespoke national company.The resulting RE:LOCATION2012Scottish Company consisted ofeight exceptional young theatre-makers fromacross Scotland.The companyworked in residence at NFYT2012 to devise a newpiece ofwork and perform it in front ofan audience ofhundredsofyoung people,peers and project partners.

This prestigious projectwaswell suited to the supportive,hardworking and inspiring environment ofNFYTand theresulting piecewas a highlight ofthe 2012 performance programme.NFYTprovided the perfect opportunity fortheRE:LOCATION 2012Scottish Company to prepare to represent Scotland on the international stage.

NetworkingTo celebrate the sense ofcommunity which youth theatre affords and to foster a spirit ofcamaraderie among festival participants,NFYT2012 also hosted a series ofteam-buildingworkshops and social events.

Colour-codedworkshopsweremade up ofyoung people ofa similar age fromeach oftheyouth theatres taking part in the festival.Theseworkshopswere facilitated by youththeatre professionals and encouraged young participants tomake new friends and learnabout each otherwith the aim ofbuilding bridges between youth theatre groups.

In addition,an open-mic session followed by anNFYTWrapParty closed the festival in style.

The social aspect of the weekend was really great andeveryone was really lovely. There was no bad feeling orbad attitudes between different youth theatres which Ithought was amazing and I have made plenty of newfriends since taking part in NFYT. NFYT 2012 Participant
