IN tHIS ISSue >>

NEXUS | Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce2

Well, if it is November, it must be election season. You’ve seen your share of lawn signs, TV or radio ads, and you are ready for the election to be over. I share your desire to see the day come and go, but I do want you to know your chamber has been an integral part of the election process for some months. Starting back in the spring we made sure all of the candidates knew of our interest (and our business focus) in the primaries. We then transitioned to working with the candidates and getting them to complete our business

questionnaire. Their answers were posted, verbatim, on our East Metro Voter Guide so that all members and citizens across the East Metro could research how the candidates address business issues.

Finally, our PAC interviewed candidates and ultimately made endorsements in all the local races. Our endorsements are considered by the PAC board and when announced, are accompanied by a financial

contribution from the PAC. I’m proud to tell you that to date the SPACC PAC has yet to see our endorsed candidate lose an election. Our endorsement has nothing to do with party affiliation - it has everything to do with how candidates intend to work with the business community for a stronger economy.

Your Chamber’s Political Action Committee is a key part of our chamber. While some chamber’s don’t engage in the political process, we think that the opportunity to engage with elected officials (and candidates) to make sure our voice is heard is key. I hope you use the East Metro Voter Guide to research the candidates in your district and then vote on November 5th. Your vote matters and we value your engagement.

Rebuilding Together Twin Cities, a nonprofit improving the homes and lives of low-income homeowners, is thrilled to announce the launch of Barnraisings.com, the first crowdfunding and crowd volunteering site specifically for Minnesota nonprofit projects.

One of the projects posted by Rebuilding Together was to help Cheryl, a hard working mother of two children who has lived in her South Minneapolis home for 27 years. The last few years have been hard on Cheryl. In addition to caring for her 12 year old son who has autism, she was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo brain surgery. Through Barnraising.com, Cheryl’s home restoration project was fully funded just two days after the site launched and enabled Rebuilding Together to repair her water-damaged ceiling.

Rebuilding Together Twin Cities had another home repair project funded through the site for a U.S. Navy veteran named Bill, who has lived in Minneapolis his entire life. Bill served in the Navy where he fought in the war on an aircraft carrier. Since then he has worked as a social worker, a security guard and has even owned a local business. The home he currently lives in has been in his family since his mother purchased it in 1951. Unfortunately, the condition of the home is deteriorating and many necessary repairs have caught up with him. The funds raised through Barnraisings.com helped Rebuilding Together Twin Cities repair Bill’s plumbing and insulate his attic.

Introducing Barnraisings.com – A New Way to Help Those in Need

NEXUS | Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce4

“People want to give to people,” said Rebuilding Together’s Executive Director Kathy Greiner. “They want to have a deeper, more meaningful, and more direct connection to the people they’re helping. Barnraisings helps them do that.”

Joe Selvaggio’s nonprofit Microgrants, which promotes self-sufficiency through housing, training and resources, is sponsoring a project on the site to get funding for two women who are breaking out of poverty by starting their own hair salon. Lakeisha and Mesha have had many challenges growing up in North Minneapolis, but they’re taking the right steps to overcome them. When Lakeisha graduated from Summit Academy, she had a dream of opening up a salon. Today, that dream is a reality. Lakeisha and Mesha now have a small one room salon at 1108 West Broadway in the Juxt artist coop.

In order to have the tools they need to fully succeed they will need two new salon stations, a shampoo station and a professional hair dryer.

Here’s How it Works

Nonprofits submit the stories of their clients who are in need of something specific. For example, if a wounded vet was in need of a handicap ramp, Rebuilding Together could submit the story, the need, the cost, and the number of volunteers required to complete the project. Like Kickstarter, the project would only get funded if the entire amount is donated. Projects have 90 days or less to reach their tipping point. Any Minnesota 501c3 in good standing can submit a campaign, and better yet, it’s free. The nonprofit is only charged if the project succeeds. All donations are still tax-deductible because the money goes to the nonprofit first.

The idea of Barnraisings came about a year ago when Jim Rettew won the 2012 Minnesota Idea Open with his idea of “Multicultural Barn Raisings.” The idea received a $15,000 grant for implementation (in partnership with Rebuilding Together), which supported the development of an online tool to match volunteers with “barn raising” projects.

“I loved the idea of a traditional Amish barn raising where in one weekend, neighbors could pull together and build a barn using nothing more than their strong hands and big hearts,” said Barnraising founder Jim Rettew. “I wanted to figure out how we could do that here in Minnesota using Kickstarter’s successful business model.”

Q. Brief overview of your organization and what you offer/ sets you apart?

A. Our company is not just about small and medium business taking advantage of cloud technology. It’s about facilitating smart collaboration across all devices, in real-time, with the security, visibility and control businesses demand. We strive to break down the walls of traditional IT, enabling all employees to work seamlessly from anywhere in an

environment support 24x7x365.

Q. How long have you been an ambassador?

A. I have been an ambassador since February and have enjoyed the business and personal relationships I’ve made a great deal.

Q. What do you enjoy most about being a Chamber member?

A. SPACC offers events to suit any taste and schedule and works really hard to ensure their members know one another, their communities,

and how we can all work together to grow the business community in Saint Paul and the Twin Cities as a whole. The events are always fun and I always connect with new and interesting people.

Q. What is one piece of advice you would offer fellow members?

A. Get involved as much as possible and attend as many events as you can fit in. The chamber is what you make of it and the more people that see you at events and meetings the more likely you are to build trusted relationships quickly.

Q. Fun tidbit?

A. I’m a transplant from California but I love the snow and Minnesota winters. In addition, with the proliferation of microbreweries all over the Twin Cities I’ve gotten really into beer and am current brewing my 4th home brew batch of the year.

Our Ambassador Committee plays a vital role in ensuring a fantastic member experience. The team is comprised of committed and engaged SPACCmembers dedicated to attending events, ribbon cuttings, and reaching out to members via phone and personal visits. Interested in joining the team? In 2005, your Chamber created a tradition called Celebrate Business Success.

This award honors those who provide leading examples of how members of the business community contribute to a shared vision of economic success throughout the Saint Paul/East Metro area.

Sponsored by:

At the Chamber’s October Membership Meeting, Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota COO Dave Overman accepted a Celebrate Business Success award. Children’s is one of the largest pediatric health systems in the United States and the only health system in Minnesota to provide care exclusively to children. The hospital is grounded in the belief that every child in St. Paul, the surrounding suburbs, state and region should have access to the best health care regardless of their ability to pay so they can grow into healthy and productive adults.
