Pastor’s Corner Dear Parishioners,
29 young people graduated from our Holy Family
Grade School this past Friday night! They are attending the
following high schools: Loyola, St. Francis, Cathedral, Holy
Family High School College Prep, Immaculate Heart, Providence, La Salle,
Clark Magnet, Crescenta Valley, and Glendale.
We wish all of our graduates the best of success as they move on to
high school in the fall. We are grateful to their parents and teachers for the
support of their Catholic education here at Holy Family. Both of our schools
have wrapped up the school year. If you have a child interested in summer
school, we offer summer school programs at both of our schools. Please note
that both summer school programs are CO-ED. Even though our high school is
all girls, summer school is co-ed. Please take advantage of our offerings!
Next Sunday is Father’s Day! You will find envelopes in the pews to
remember your fathers, grandfathers, etc. for the Father’s Day novena,
beginning on June 18th. Please list the names on the envelope and then return
it along with your offering in the collection basket or drop it off at our offices.
Travelling this summer? Check out masstimes.org for information on
Masses while away. Don’t miss the Holy Eucharist! While travelling, please
consider continuing to support your parish.
Please see page 4 for information about our upcoming capital
campaign. We are working on architectural renderings of a revised Master Plan
and parish center concept in order to get approval from the archdiocese before
we launch our much-anticipated capital campaign in January.
Don’t forget we have our biggest fundraiser of the year coming up next
Saturday! Keep on Rollin’ raffle tickets are on sale now. Event tickets are sold at
the parish office as well!!
Quotes from Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si:
“The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an
immense pile of filth.” (n. 21)
“Because of us, thousands of species will no longer give glory to God by
their very existence, nor convey their message to us. We have no such right.”
(n. 33)
“This is the way human beings contrive to feed their self-destructive
vices: trying not to see them, trying not to acknowledge them, delaying the
important decisions and pretending that nothing will happen.” (n. 59)
“We are not God.” (n. 67)
Summer peace and love,

COMMITMENT SUNDAY
TODAY
Our Turn to help our Priests
This weekend you are invited to
support the Priest Retirement Fund
for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
This fund is an essential support
system for our retired diocesan
priests. It is because of your
generous support of this fund that
our priests are able to continue to
work in their ministry even in their
retirement years.
We will have pledge envelopes
available in the pews if you would
like to make a gift today. If you have
given to this fund in the past, you
may have received your renewal
letter at your home. You may also
make a gift in honor or in memoriam
for a specific priest. Visit
PRFLA.ORG for more information.

Father Michael
Fernandes, SFX
He arrives on
June 15th. He is
a friend of Father
Xavier Dsouza.
He looks forward to being with us this
summer until the end of August. He
was born and brought up in Goa,
India, a colony of the Portuguese until
1960. He is one of four boys to his
late parents. Two of his older brothers
are in London and one is in Mumbai.
He is the youngest of the four. He
became a member of the Society of
St. Francis Xavier, Goa, popularly
known as "Pilar fathers" from
Goa. He is presently the pastor at
Our Lady of Pilar Church and
Manager of St. Xavier’s Elementary
School, at Dholpur, Rajasthan, India
located in the Archdiocese of Agra.
He has been a priest for more than 30
years and has spent most of his
priestly life ministering in the
missions.
Capital Campaign
4 June 11, 2017
On May 16th, Ministry Leaders and other members of the Parish came together for the Leadership Summit.
Father Jim, fundraising consultant Janet Levine, and Deacon Ron Baker walked the participants though the
importance of a Parish Center for Holy Family and the capital campaign that will support this project.
Father Jim talked about how most churches our size have a Parish Center that creates a center for the many
programs and ministries of the Church. Showing how today, a family coming to join the church and sign their two
children up for Religious Education and EDGE or confirmation would require them to go to three different buildings in
three different locations on the campus, Father Jim highlighted why a Parish Center is needed. More, the Parish
Center would provide permanent spaces for our ministries and programs such as our Food Bank.
To build the Parish Hall will require fundraising—about $8 Million worth of fundraising. And this must be in
addition to the support parishioners and others already give to Holy Family. Our consultant talked about how the
campaign must be an “and” gift for each and every donor to the campaign—and how it should be a sacrificial gift. That
is, support for the Parish Center is not just over and above your regular offertory giving and attendance at fundraising
events, it must be a larger gift, one that is a stretch and may make you consider what you will sacrifice in order to
make that gift.
Janet also talked about how the campaign will be conducted in phases and the importance of members of
Holy Family being part of the various committees that will be set up. Deacon Ron walked the audience through what
needs to happen next. On the facilities side, an architect will be hired, plans for the Center must be approved, and, of
course, we must ensure that these plans include adequate parking.
As we move from the planning phase into actually raising funds for the building, Deacon Ron assured
everyone that there will be brochures and drawings to show our prospective donors as well as training and support for
those who will be doing to asks.
Many in the audience shared success stories from other churches and commented on the strength of
community that Holy Family brings to this effort. They and others indicated their interest in serving on committees to
help the campaign succeed.
While most of the audience was enthusiastic about the Parish Hall—and the promise of adequate parking—
there were some concerns raised about cost, location, and whether it was necessary to build a new building rather
than renovate one already built. Deacon Ron pointed out that the cost of materials and construction have gone up
substantially since the last large project undertaken at Holy Family. What cost $1 million then would be many times
that amount if done today.
As the project moves forward, we know there will be many other questions. Deacon Ron welcomes your calls
and emails on the project, the master plan, and the campaign. Over the next several months, look to the bulletin for
updates and opportunities to be involved in this exciting project.

artículo de VIRTUS® “Children, Safety, and Hot
Cars” (Niños, seguridad y autos calientes), envíe un
correo electrónico a [email protected] o

MISTERIO INEXPRESABLE
El Dios del universo es
misterioso. La ciencia no ha
podido resolver el misterio
de cómo el universo surgió
ni explicar exactamente qué
es lo que continúa dándole
energía creadora y diseño
magistral. Ninguna religión
afirma que ha encontrado
las palabras para nombrar
plenamente el misterio
inefable de Dios, ya que no
importa qué nombre
usemos, Dios siempre transciende nuestra limitada
nuestras vidas. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
