HISTORY AND GERMAN TRIP TO BERLIN Berlin was amazing!
On the first day, students arrived to the airport filled with nerves and trepidation about
what lay ahead.
After the excitement of a two hour flight, we met our guides and went on our first visit.
We visited the Reichstag and the Tiergarten on the first day, tracing Hitler’s rise to
power. This was on a freezing cold day with hail coming down sideways! Not what the
students had expected.
Day two included visits to the Brandenburg gate, the memorial to the murdered Jews
of Europe, and Plotzensee Prison – which happened to be a working prison which the
students were a bit concerned about! In the evening, we went to the top of the TV
Tower – the tallest building in Europe. Some students were initially worried about going
up to the top but everyone did after some coaxing by staff and guides.
Day three was when the historical gravity of the trip really hit home. We started the
day at Sachsenhausen concentration camp. This visibly impacted students especially
after visiting the gas chambers and crematorium. The horrors of the Holocaust were
clear to see and the guides later commended the students on their maturity and
respect around these sights. We later visited Wannsee, where the ‘final solution’ was
decided upon and ended the day at the Olympic Stadium. Between these visits, we
went to a Commonwealth War Graves cemetery for RAF pilots shot down over Berlin.
This was a good moment for students to reflect, which they did and was a particular
highlight for most of the students, seeing the ultimate sacrifice made by many young
soldiers against the Nazi regime.
After this sombre reflection on how lucky we all are, the students went bowling. This
was a chance for students to show off their prowess…or not as the case was for the
staff!
The final day included trips to Cold War sights. Students saw the Berlin Wall – even
buying chunks of it from vendors – and then went to the Stasi prison. A case of
particular interest was the padded dark cell which was used as punishment for non-
conforming prisoners.
Students arrived home tired but with a much better understanding of the horrors of
the Nazi regime and the legacy of the cold war.
Mr Procter, Teacher of History.

Y11 FRENCH, GERMAN AND SPANISH SPEAKING EXAMS - FAQs If your child is in Year 11 and studying a Modern Foreign Language, they will have their
speaking exam during the week commencing 30th April 2018.
How can I help my child? All MFL students in Year 11 have been given a speaking workbook in which they have
answered a range of questions. Regardless of your language ability, you can help by
making sure they are familiar with all of their answers and can answer you if you test
them on any of the questions from the booklet.
What happens if my child does not turn up?
Exam rules say that any non-attendees must be given zero for the speaking
component, which is worth 25% of the overall GCSE grade.
How can I know when my child’s exam is?
All MFL students were given the date and time of their exam before Easter. The dates
and times are also posted on the Year 11 notice board.
What happens if my child is upset during the exam?
Unfortunately, if your child is upset once they have been given the cards, JCQ
regulations say that we are not permitted to stop the recording. Again, according to
JCQ rules, neither will they be allowed to have another time to do the speaking exam.
When will my child get the results of the exam?
These are externally marked exams and all of the recordings will be sent to an AQA
examiner. The results will be issued as part of their overall GCSE grade, but will not be
set out as a separate exam mark.
We understand that this is a stressful time for all Year 11 students and that the MFL
Speaking exam can be incredibly daunting. We have tried to guide our students as
much as possible and provided them with a mock speaking exam but preparation is
key. We really appreciate your ongoing support throughout these exams.
Mr Herd, Head of Modern Foreign Languages.

YEAR 11 REVISION TIP - NUMBER SEVEN Practice on past exam papers or revision tests available on the web. Initially, do one
section at a time and progress to doing an entire paper against the clock.
DEFIANCE DETENTIONS 99%+ of Rainhill students are always polite, hardworking and respectful towards teachers and their fellow pupils. There are however a handful of students whose behaviour needs to get better. Their behaviour can disrupt the flow of learning for others.
This additional punishment is an After School Detention every Friday from 3:10-5pm. This detention is in addition to the current sanctions which teachers issue in line with the Behaviour Policy – it is not a replacement.
Our definition of defiance “Behaviour in which you refuse to follow reasonable instructions from a member of staff”.
When/why this sanction will be issued If a student is defiant, they will be issued with a detention from the teacher
concerned. If a student has been defiant on two occasions, they will be issued with an
additional punishment of the Friday After School Detention.
Communication • Parents/carers will be informed by Edulink text. There will be no additional
reminders or phone calls, your child is expected to turn up. • Students will be also informed by their YSM that they have a detention. They will
not be given a reminder; it is their responsibility to turn up. • Form tutors have gone through all of the information with the students.
If a student does not attend the Friday night detention they will be issued with an
escalated sanction of internal exclusion the following week; this runs until 4:10pm.

SPORTING NEWS Manchester Thunder V’s Surrey Storm - Saturday 21st April 2018
Super League Netball Match, Belle Vue Sports Village. What an amazing few weeks of netball!
England crowned Commonwealth Champions, winning by one goal in the last
second. We then had an amazing night on Saturday watching a Super league match
at Belle Vue Sports village in Manchester.
Kathryn Turner is a former Rainhill pupil and is currently first choice Goal Attack for
National Super league team Manchester Thunder!
We went to support her in a match against Surrey Storm at Belle Vue Sports village. It
was an exciting game to watch with Kathryn shooting brilliantly to enable Manchester
thunder to win the game 62-57. Kathryn had organised a shout out for the girls before
the game letting the crowd know she was once a proud pupil of Rainhil High School!
After the match, the Rainhill netball girls had a chance to get autographs and
pictures with the players and then we had a question and answer session with Kathryn.
Our girls grilled Kathryn on all matters from work to training and also finding out
Kathryn’s favourite teacher in school!
Thanks to Kathryn Turner for a great night, she is also hopefully coming into school next
term to give the girls some top tips and run a training session for all of the Rainhill
netball teams.
If you are interested in playing netball in school, training starts again in September. We
have a great local team called Capricorn who train at Sutton High School on a
Monday evening. If you would like further information, please see me or Miss Garner
during your PE lesson.
Miss Bakstad, Head of PE.

SPORTING NEWS No Rest For Hannah Over The Easter Holidays Tennis player Hannah Rylatt had a busy Easter period at home and abroad,
successfully competing in a number of tournaments that has seen her ranking rise to
5th in Great Britain for her age group.
The Easter holidays saw the beginning of the LTA 12 and Under Summer National Tour.
This a series of 5 tournaments whereby the best 32 players from Great Britain compete
on different surfaces.
The first tournament was on clay in Surrey and Hannah successfully made it through to
the semi finals after four long days of competition. After a couple of days rest, Hannah
travelled to Nottingham, this time for an outdoor hard court tournament whereby she
successfully made it through to the quarter finals before being defeated by the
eventual champion.
Two days later, she flew out to France to take
part in a Tennis Europe event. Hannah was
away from home for nine days in total with
her team mates. With a strong entry of 102
girls, Hannah was finally defeated at the
quarter final stage.
Focus now switches from individual
tournaments to team events as she has been
selected to represent Lancashire for both
12&U and 14&U in the County Cup.
Good Luck Hannah!
Mr Rachi, Second in PE.
