Monthly Oil Statistics

CHART 1

Indigenous production of crude oil, NGL and feedstocks by OECD Region

Total OECD indigenous production of crude oil, NGL and refinery feedstocks decreased by 4.6% in July 2020

compared to July 2019. This trend was driven by a decline of 6.6% y-o-y1 in the OECD Americas, where

production fell in Canada (-16.4% y-o-y) and the United States (-3.3% y-o-y). Meanwhile, production in OECD

Europe grew (+10.0% y-o-y) due to an increase in production in Norway (+23.8% y-o-y). Overall, total OECD

production remained stable (+0.3% y-t-d2) during the first seven months of 2020.

Total OECD refinery gross output of total products declined by 16.9% in July 2020 compared to July 2019, a

trend observed in all OECD regions. The decline was led by the OECD Americas, with a year-on-year decrease of

17.1% and followed by OECD Europe (-16.3% y-o-y) and OECD Asia Oceania (-17.6% y-o-y). Declines in outputs

of all products were observed across all OECD regions. The largest declines were observed in total kerosene (-

52.4% y-o-y), total gasoline (-14.8% y-o-y) and total gas/diesel oil (-8.8% y-o-y) for total OECD.

Total OECD net deliveries of total products decreased by 14.4% in July 2020 compared to July 2019. Declines in

deliveries were observed among almost all products, with total kerosene (-55.4% y-o-y), total gasoline (-10.9%

y-o-y) and total gas/diesel oil (-9.3% y-o-y) being hit the hardest. Regionally, decreases in net deliveries were

also observed in all OECD regions, with the OECD Americas leading the drop in deliveries (-16.2% y-o-y), mainly

caused by declines in total gasoline (-12.8% y-o-y) and total kerosene (-49.9% y-o-y). Decreases in OECD Europe

and OECD Asia Oceania were also observed, with declines on a year-on-year basis of 12.0% and 13.0%,

respectively.

Total OECD oil stock levels on national territory increased by 833 kt in July 2020 compared to closing stock

levels in June 2020, and closed at 574 million metric tons. Stock builds were observed in OECD Asia Oceania

(+1964 kt) and OECD Europe (+356 kt), while stock levels declined in the OECD Americas (-1488 kt). Middle

distillates (+1040 kt) and crude oil, NGL and refinery feedstocks (+723 kt) contributed to the overall stock build

observed in the total OECD, whereas stock draws were observed for total gas/diesel oil (-1334 kt) and residual

fuel oil (-456 kt).

Austria Most recent data are the best estimates from the Austrian national administration, based on available

preliminary data. Data are usually finalised within three months following the first publication.

Canada As of January 2019, Canadian data includes outputs of secondary products from bitumen upgraders. These are

reported under “from other sources” under other hydrocarbons, and in “primary product receipts” for refinery

gas, gas/diesel oil and petroleum coke.There in a break in series between December 2018 and January 2019 as the Canadian Administration launched

a new Monthly Refined Petroleum Products survey in the beginning of 2019. The survey includes greater

coverage of all products.

The Canadian Administration includes condensates and pentanes plus under crude oil.

Data for Canada are submitted by the Department of Natural Resources (Natural Resources Canada, or NRCan),

based on actual and preliminary data from Canada's national statistical agency (Statistics Canada) and various

other sources. In cases where data from these sources are unavailable, estimates are conducted by NRCan,

based on information available at the time, including alternative sources. Data are usually finalised within three

months of the first publication. An important source for any differences between data published by Statistics

Canada and data published by the IEA is data estimated by NRCan or the IEA Secretariat.

Chile The most recent data on inland deliveries for Chile are preliminary. This data are updated within two months

following the first publication.

Finland Starting from August 2019, information on international marine bunkers are not available but included in the

“Gross inland deliveries obs.” of total fuel oil and gas/diesel due to confidentiality reasons.

France French data includes the overseas departments (French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte and

Reunion).

Israel The stocks level information is not available at this time.

The statistical data for Israel are supplied by and under the responsibility of the relevant Israeli authorities. The

use of such data by the OECD is without prejudice to the status of the Golan Heights, East Jerusalem and Israeli

settlements in the West Bank under the terms of international law.The trade breakdown information is not available at this time.

Petroleum coke is included by Israeli Administration in the amounts of other petroleum products.

Information is based on data published by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources as well as the Central

Bureau of Statistics.

Mexico Starting from January 2018, reporting of LPG imports and deliveries is based on a more comprehensive

coverage of the market.

United States The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) excludes crude oil lease stocks (crude oil stocks held at

producing sites) from industry stocks of crude oil.
