Collectors' Conventions

On Sunday, August 21 some of the local Alberta license plate collectors met in Andrew, AB. Our host was Marsh Pysar. He is the fellow who bought my full collection of plates in January of 2008. The above photo is in Pysar’s garage and most of the plates in the background were mine at one time. In the photo we are holding one 1912 Alberta plate and three 1913 Alberta plates which is uncommon to see together. The other big plate that I am holding is from Thailand. Marsh treated us to a borscht lunch over at the fairgrounds where the annual Babas & Borshch Ukrainian Festival was going on. The rest of the afternoon we spent time looking at and trading license plates and related items. A good time was had by all. John Wm Duke

Diane and Jim Close, Aline Cox and Yessy Byl all attended the National Button Society (NBS) Convention held this year in Denver, Colorado. Yessy is currently 2nd Vice President for the NBS and will be the President in 2018. Nine people from Canada were in attendance.

They were told that the Crowne Plaza, where the convention was held, was close to downtown Denver, but it was actually 45 minutes away, so they didn't see much of Denver.

Pictured here are three hockey sweaters that Len “Comet” Haley wore during his early career. Len Haley played from 1949 to 1972 for a number of teams. Len was born in 1931 in Edmonton and is now living at Seba Beach. His first junior team was in 1949 – 50 with the Medicine Hat Tigers where he played for two seasons and was captain of that team. He turned pro in the fall of 1951 with the Omaha Knights. He played for the Edmonton Flyers in 1952 -53, 1953-54 seasons and came back again in 1959-60 and 1960-61 seasons. He played 1961 to 1965 for the San Francisco Seals which is #3 sweater. #2 sweater is from the Tulsa Oilers where he played for the 1967-68 season. He played only 30 games in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings. These three sweaters were recently purchased by a friend of mine for over $10,000. Len played hockey at the senior level for many more years and played in his last major tournament in 2010 in Minnesota.
