A substantial amount of equipment was lost, such as honey supers with drawn wax, feeders, brood boxes, travelling nucs and even his beesuit! He has set up a crowd funding page to get him back on his feet again. Take extra care in dry weather.

The Hive at Kew GardensRoyal Botanical Kew Gardens is currently home to the spectacular Hive sculpture designed by British artist Wolfgang Buttress, to tell the story of the honeybee and the importance of pollination. Made from 170,000 pieces of suspended aluminium, the installation appears as a swarm from a distance. Humming sounds and LEDs, which respond directly from the actual hives at Kew, provide a multi-sensory experience. There until the end of 2017, entry is free with standard day admission to the

gardens.

ApiguardIts already that time of year again! Its time to apply Apiguard to your bees. This will aid (if done correctly) the knock down of the varroa mite in infected colonies. Apiguard will be available at our next monthly meeting from Wendy Swift at a discount for members

Mr Beesy says...One point I always like to make is that beekeeping is a PRACTICAL subject. In Chelmsford, we do our best to teach the basics, in theory and practical classes, but for those who are not naturally skilful, that is not enough. I once heard a beginner say “I open up but don’t know what to do”. A bee-buddy doesn’t have to be experienced and could well be another learner; two heads are always better than one. We should all try to encourage beginners to team up with someone else for the first season. I collected a new swarm in late August; and the wasps are not so bad this year, but it’s still as well to close down to 2 bee spaces to avoid wasps and robbing. Try and get feeding done by the end of September.
