From the President

Presidential Ponderings Judy Kriehn, President I’ve been pondering what to make my topic du jour, and decided to write about programs and workshops.

Have you ever taken a Guild workshop? If not, why not?

When I was programs/workshops vice president, a trend I noticed was that we would get complaints from members if our programs included a lot of art quilters. However, when we had more traditional speakers come visit the Guild, few members would sign up to take workshops. Workshops presented by art quilters would get good responses.

The only explanation I could come up with is that people who do traditional work believe that once you learn the basics of piecing, appliqué, hand-quilting, etc., you don’t need to know more. However, it is MY belief that an old dog like me can ALWAYS learn a new trick.

The first workshop I took was a class with Jane Sassaman in 1999. I signed up the night before the class at the meeting, just because her work fascinated me, even though I had started coming down with a bad cold that day. To this day, I remember how surprising the class was. My hands and subconscious were just going to town with my black construction paper and x-acto knife.

Since that time, I’ve taken MANY workshops, both here and elsewhere. But mostly here. For a while there, I had a trend going when I would sign up for a class in Houston, and have a blast. Then a couple of months later, when the Guild calendar was updated, I would find the teachers I’d taken classes from in Houston. On one hand, it was nice to be able to help promote the classes, but on the other hand, it woulda been a LOT cheaper to take the classes here. I think every class I’ve ever taken in Houston averaged about $80-100 in enrollment fee and kit fees. By comparison, if you plan ahead here, your enrollment fee can end up being as low as $32.50 if you take both workshops offered by a given teacher. Kit fees rarely top $30.00, if that.

There are some fun teachers coming in 2014. One of my favorite people of all time, Laura Wasilowski, is helping us kick off the new year (literally!) Jan Krentz comes on her heels in February, Pat Yamin in May, David Taylor in June, Doug Leko in September, Flavin Glover in October, and Linda Hahn in December. Take a minute to go to the website and click through to the Programs and Workshops pages. Use the links to the teacher websites provided and get inspired.

Sign up for a workshop this year. It’s like going to a little retreat in your own backyard!

Judy

Attention

Award Winners in Houston have QGD Connection!

It’s always exciting to see past and present members of the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas have their work recognized. The 2013 edition of the International Quilt Association judged show was certainly no exception.

The most exciting news was the Best of Show honors captured by Richardson resident, Melissa Sobotka, with her quilt Chihuly’s Gondola. The subject of the quilt was featured in the exhibit of Dale Chihuly’s work at the Arboretum last year.

QGD members captured first place honors in both of the abstract art quilt categories. Heather Pregger of Fort Worth won the blue ribbon in the Art-Abstract, Large category with her red and black composition entitled Tuning Fork #11.

Carol Morrissey of Double Oak won first place in the Art-Abstract, Small with her quilt, Roses in the Window. You may have seen Carol’s quilt in our show last spring.

Former guild members, Linda Taylor and Cheri Meineke-Johnson, captured third place honors in the Innovative Applique category with Cheri’s design Greg’s Song. Lastly (but not leastly,) Dr. Dana Lacy Chapman, a past Silver Thimble winner and now a resident of Longmont, Colorado, captured second place in the Wearable Art category with her vest ensemble Marbled Magic.

A round of applause for our award-winning quilters, both past and present!

And, speaking of Shows….Calling all entries! The deadline for entries in Quilt Celebration 2014 is January 2! As always, Shelly Guibert will be at the December and January meetings—ready to take your entry and answer any questions you may have. And a reminder—it is only $1 per ENTRANT (not for each entry).

Helena Hibbs

Memorial Scholarship

Judy Kriehn, President

When our founder, Helena Hibbs passed away, the Board considered a number of ways to honor her memory. The thing that kept coming back to us was how she loved to share her knowledge by teaching others to quilt, and she felt strongly that the art of quilting should be taken seriously as a creative endeavor.

Therefore, the Board decided to establish a scholarship that would assist Guild members in earning specialized quilting credentials (judging or appraisal for example) or building their arsenal of personal teaching skills.

The spring of 2014 will be the inaugural scholarship award(s) presentation. The application information and forms were published on pages 66-68 of the 2013-14 Guild Directory. They will also be available soon via the Guild website.

If you’ve been a Guild member for more than three years and have dreams of certification or teaching excellence, please take a look at the application information and start planning your submission now. Deadline for application is January 15, 2014.

Mini Quilt

Auction Donna King,

Mini Quilt Auction Committee

Imagine a world where people are accepted for who they are, not how they look. This is the mission of the Children's Craniofacial Association, the 2014 Quilt Celebration Miniature Quilt Auction recipient. We are looking forward to having CCA representative Jill Patterson at our December meeting to share inspiring stories of their work. This time of year reminds us of all the wonderful things we are thankful for and we are so thankful for your past support. We need 100 mini quilts to make our 2014 auction a success. At the present time we have received five! So, please start your creative juices flowing and make a mini for a wonderful cause.

Covers for Kids

Workshop Pam Hanson,

VP—Community Service [email protected]

We Need You !! What will Covers For Kids accept as donations? We’ll take your orphan blocks, unfinished projects and tops, as well as new completed quilts. At the monthly workshops, the blocks and UFPs are changed into great tops that then make their way to the machine quilters, then the binders, and then to the children. “But what about my fabric scraps?" you ask. Well, to be honest, we have a 10x10 foot storage unit filled with donated fabric, as well as a huge stash stored at Rhonda Anderson's house. As a result, we've had to get picky about the fabric we accept. At the moment, we are only seeking fabrics that we can use for the back of a quilt. Next workshop is November 30th, Thanksgiving weekend, so if you have time for a break from shopping on Saturday, call Rhonda Anderson at 214 986-5880 or email her at [email protected] and let her know you’ll be there to sew. Bring your machine and sewing kit -- CFK provides the rest. We’re there from 9:30 to about 4:30, but you can come for the whole day or just for a few hours. Due to the size of the room, space is limited, so be sure to contact Rhonda. We meet at Hancock’s near Firewheel Mall. We won’t have a workshop in December, but if you’d like to do something for the children over the holidays, contact Pam or Rhonda for a simple and quick pattern, or use your own favorite to make a top or two—then bring them to the January meeting. The greatest need is for quilts suitable for teenagers, but all sizes are welcome! A Happy Thanksgiving to all quilters!

Library News Marte Keller,

Guild Librarian

There's still plenty of time to make a mini or two for the annual miniature quilt auction at Dallas Quilt Celebration. It's for a good cause and watching the bidding is a blast! If you're looking for ideas, your Library has LOTS of books (70) about making miniature quilts. Here are just a few: 101 Fabulous Small Quilts by That Patchwork Place

Pretty little Mini Quilts by Ray Hemachandra

Or if you'd like to design your own, there's: 130 Mini Quilt Blocks by Susan Briscoe So stop by the Library area before the next Guild meeting and we'll show you where the "Miniatures" are located. Happy Reading!

Membership

Lut DeMeulder, VP Membership

There were 118 at the November meeting of the Guild to attend the history rich lecture of Jeananne Wright, and we had 8 new or renewing members!

If you would like to get to know the guild members better, join me at the Membership Table to help with admission, check name tags, and hand out door prize tickets. If you feel like doing some volunteer work, even if it’s a one time commitment, contact me at [email protected].

Advance Show

Ticket Sales Sherry Searcy

Advance Tickets Chair

If you know of any quilt shops or guilds that would like to sell advance tickets for Dallas Quilt Celebration 2014, please send the information to Sherry Searcy – [email protected]. Advance Tickets have a discount of $1 per ticket.

The tickets will be marked by shop/guild so we will know who sold which tickets. Money from sales can then be mailed or turned in at the show.

Got Extra

Bumper Stickers?

It seems that some guild members got two quilt show bumper stickers in their 2014 membership packets and others got none. If you received an extra bumper sticker and don’t need it, please return it at the next guild meeting so it can be used by a member who did not receive one.

The bumper sticker is one of our best means of advertising our quilt show so “wear it” proudly on your car.

Show Chair News Marie Zackowski

Show Chair

Thanks to our Expo Volunteers!

The Original Sewing & Quilt Expo was held for the first time in Fort Worth In October. Thanks to Quilter’s Guild of Dallas volunteers, who helped us earn a free booth by working at the Expo. Our volunteers included Barbara Martin, Carolyn Evans, Marlene Dreyer, Judy Kriehn, Chris Becker, Judy Ullman, Sherrie Tootle, Donna Benedetto, Marie Zaczkowski, Suzanne Hardebeck and Alice McElroy. We sold lots of tickets for our stunning raffle quilt, signed up new members and promoted our quilt show to many quilters who didn’t even know we had a quilt show in Dallas. If you missed the Expo this year, they have Fort Worth on their schedule for October 16-18, 2014.

Something very special, courtesy

of our November speaker

Judy Kriehn, President

Last month’s lecturer, Jeananne Wright, displayed a quilt she made last spring in honor of our Guild! I don’t remember anybody doing that before, so I thought I would share photos with those of you unable to attend.

The quilt is titled Buttons and Bows and features tiny bowtie blocks pieced together into 16-patch blocks, then placed into a “streak of lightning” set. I feel an itch coming on to make a similar quilt, but Sherrie Tootle and I think I can skip the tiny bowties and just do plain 16-patch blocks…

The back has two feedsacks from Texas and one from Kansas. (A gentleman attending the meeting told me that the “shorts” noted on the Kansas sack is the name

for pig feed.) It also has a vintage linen calendar from 1979 – the year the Guild was founded – as well as a few leftover bowtie blocks from the front.

Thank you for sharing this, Jeananne!
