My first STEM session

• Delivered by a consultant from New Jersey; former technology education teacher

• Departure from inquiry alone into a methodology called engineering design; less labs using scientific method, more using engineering practices

• Give them a problem, tell them the parameters of a successful solution, and give them tools – they must try to solve problem, test proposed fixes, and find a solution

• Recommends students take physics first (Algebra 1 is embedded) because it’s less abstract

• iSTEM = integrative STEM – pulling multiple content areas together to solve real-world problems.

• 2014 NAEP has first exam for technology and engineering literacy – puts students as avatars and gives them real world problem—asks what they would do next, etc. – Sony PlayStation designers created the

assessment.

• Standards say teachers need 4 years of professional development before being held accountable for results of these standards

• AutoDesk – it’s free for teacher and personal student use – cannot deploy in a lab setting

• Adobe CS6 for $29/month – in the cloud, can use on two computers, use Adobe Education Exchange, can become Adobe certified – Can use Muse to do a website with no code, unlike Dreamweaver

• Google Sketchup – can get pro version for free if the IT teacher contacts the GaDOE (Chara Lee) on as many machines as you like - there is a model innovation center at the GaDOE that you can observe (and take students there too)

• Apple Xcode – a way to design apps, step by step instructions on App store that tells them how to make apps

• To be STEM certified you have to use a curriculum outside the state or county’s – must go beyond. – http://stemgeorgia.org/

• Turn iPhone into a document camera – plug your cable into iPhone, set it to not sleep, can film what’s on your desk, etc.

• Only need about 5 devices (iPads, etc.) to run the classroom – don’t need 1:1 ratio

What can LMSs do?

• Familiarize self with standards

• Order materials, databases, ebooks

• Approach science teachers/collaborate

• Approach pre-engineering or technology education teachers/collaborate

• Help judge engineering projects/competitions

• Promote cross-collaboration among depts.

• Help achieve or promote STEM certification
