If parents find a child who has not been picked up on time in the yard, please bring them to the General office, so that staff can attempt to contact parents or make the appropriate arrangements for the care of the child. Children should never be taken from the yard without direct parental permission. Thank you for your assistance with this request. MWPS GOES GREEN FOR GREEN DAY Yesterday we held our first Green Day. Students dressed in Green and participated in green day activities across the school. The day started with a senior assembly and a

junior assembly with special guest Amber Anile from the Orang-utan Project. Amber educated the students about the Orang-utan Project and what we can do to help conserve their habitat and save these precious people of the forest from extinction. Classes then enjoyed a day of Green fun1. The activities included gardening, making nature mosaics, writing green poetry, painting pots and planting beans in them, writing and performing plays and all manner of green crafts were made. At lunch the whole school had a picnic on the basketball courts and celebrated the day with a Nude Food Rubbish

Free Lunch. Students and staff donated money for the Save The Bilby Fund and the Australian Koala Foundation. This money helps to continue our adoption of Elliot and Yogi koalas at Ballarat Wildlife Park and also the help save the bilby from extinction. We raised $609.35. A fantastic

effort! Congratulations and thanks go to all the staff for making the activities fun and environmentally friendly, the students for dressing in green and participating enthusiastically during the day and Amber Anile for coming out to speak to the students. A big THANK YOU to Anish G and Lalita W, our school’s environment captains for running the assemblies and making the day run smoothly. Loretta Leary, Environment Co-ordinator

ENVIRONMENT CLUB During Term 2 and Term 3, the Junior Environment Club has been meeting

once a week at lunchtime to create an artwork about Endangered Animals. Four of Australia’s endangered species were chosen when coming up with the design. The Baw-Baw frog, Eastern Barred Bandicoot, the Helmeted Honey Eater and the Leadbeater Possum have all been represented on the mosaic mural. Special thanks to Miss Horrocks (Pre Service Teacher from Victoria University) for her outstanding creative leadership with this project!

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS…. Lilian lives in Kenya. Kenya is located on the east coast of Africa, shares borders with Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania. The climate ranges from hot and humid on the coast to cool and temperate in the highlands. Rainfall is unreliable throughout much of Kenya and less than one-fifth of the land is suitable for agriculture. 6D have written a letter to Lilian our sponsored World Vision child from Kenya. “Dear Lilian, Hi, this is 6D from Mount Waverley Primary School. In our class we have 27 people and 1 teacher. We share a classroom with another Year 6 class. In Year 6 we do a lot of fun things because it is our last year in primary school. This year we worked hard on making a mini movie out of clay and filmed with a camera. It was heaps of fun! We have gone on a class trip to Ballarat. That was where lots of gold was found a long time ago. Also we got to go camping with all the year six’s near the sea. We went for 5 days and we got to stay in a cabin with our friends. There were lots of activities like walking to the beach, a huge swing, sailing in a boat and lots more. Also, this year some of the Year 5’s and 6’s did Wakakkiri. Wakakirri is when you tell a story through dancing/acting. That also was really fun! We went off to compete against other schools, unfortunately we didn’t make it to the finals but we had loads of fun. It was a great experience that we would never forget. At the end of the year, the Year 6’s have a special party called Graduation. Graduation is a celebration for finishing primary school and going off to high school. We are all looking forward to it! Do you go to school? If you do, do you play outside with your friends? Have you visited any special places?” Year 6D students

LIBRARY NEWS TERM 3 EVENTS What an exciting term! We’ve had Book Week and all its associated activities, author Kym Lardner came to see the Preps, our students got up to all sorts of extreme reading in their efforts to win that photo competition (congratulations Lila), a staggering 98% of our students complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge, reading an equally staggering 28528 books, Grade 3’s enjoyed a special visit to the local library to watch a dramatic performance and all our children from Prep to Grade 4 have been to the local library to find out about the services it offers and be issued a borrower card. Best of all, more than 82 families and more than 130 children came to the Library for National Reading Hour Day. Right through from 10 in the morning until after 4pm, the place was buzzing with Mums, Dads, Mums and Dads, Grandparents and lots of children. We’ll definitely have to do that again! Look for some great pictures from the day over the page and do drop in the library to see more photos on display behind the loans desk. Thank you to Mrs Noblett and Mrs Burns and Miss Richards, who also supported the library by coming on the day. It was a very satisfying turnout and a great sign in the National Year of Reading that MWPS families value reading! WRITER’S AWARD 2012 BOOK At last the much sought after book is ready for borrowing, having spent a week in the library for everyone to see. It seems only fair that the young authors themselves are the first students to borrow the book, so come to the library on Monday to either borrow or reserve it. We have decided that it should be an overnight loan only until every featured child has a chance to take it home, then after that, it can be borrowed for the usual period, so that you have an opportunity to show it off to extended family and friends. OVERDUE BOOKS The children are allowed to borrow books for the holidays, but we are hunting down any books that have been overdue for more than a month. You may receive a notice, but feel sure the books have been returned. If so please drop in and have a chat and we will check the shelves again. Some parents have already spoken to me, and should just keep a lookout over the break. You will notice the cost of the books has been included on the note. THIS IS NOT A DEMAND FOR PAYMENT BUT ONLY THERE TO DEMONSTRATE HOW VALUABLE OUR BOOKS ARE AND HOW LUCKY WE ARE TO HAVE SUCH A GREAT COLLECTION, WHEN BOOKS ARE SO EXPENSIVE TO BUY. Many books fly in from all over the place at the end of the year and many mysterious disappearances are then resolved…in the meantime please keep looking. PTO Parent Helpers – thank you so much all the wonderful people who have helped out in the library this term, especially Ursula Sutherland, Julia Mawson and Susanna Harris, who give so many hours and without whom I could not manage, and our super-book-covering team, who take home books by the bag, and bring them back meticulously covered! BOOKS FOR PARENTS There is a small collection of books about the ways parents can foster reading at home, and help their children to switch on to the delights of books. A recent addition is aimed at parents with 0-7’s at home – The Ultimate First Book Guide. It’s full of great titles that work especially well at particular ages and lots of good advice. If interested, just pop in to the library and borrow any of these resources under your child’s number. Jacqueline Griffeth-Teacher Librarian
