    PEER-TO-PEER APPLICATIONS

The availability of peer-to-peer (P2P) file exchange services makes it tempting to share and

download copyrighted music and movies for free. This is ILLEGAL and also a violation of the CWRU

    Acceptable Use Policy.

If you choose to share or download copyrighted material (e.g., music, movies, TV shows and books)

    in peer-to-peer file sharing services:

    • You may be exposing yourself to legal action from copyright holders.

      • Copyright holders may subpoena CWRU for the names of individuals who are sharing

copyrighted files on the CWRU network; CWRU is legally obligated to provide those names

      to the copyright holders.

      • CWRU can impose appropriate sanctions upon illegal file sharers and other violators of the

Acceptable Use Policy, including denying them access to the network and disciplinary action.

      • The Acceptable Use Policy has further details at case.edu/its/acceptable-use-policy.html.

See campusdownloading.com/legal.htm for a complete list of sites where you can legally

download music and other entertainment, including iTunes, Hulu and YouTube.

Taken from the CWRU Acceptable Use Policy:

”Abide by applicable laws and university policies and all applicable contracts and licenses

and respect the copyright and intellectual property rights of others, including the legal use of

copyrighted material. Failure to comply with the appropriate use of computing and information

technology resources threatens the atmosphere for the sharing of information, the free exchange

of ideas and the secure environment for creating and maintaining information property and

subjects one to disciplinary action. Any member of the CWRU community found using computing

and information technology resources in violation of the Acceptable Use Policy may be denied

access to university computing resources and may be subject to disciplinary action, both outside

and within the university, including, without limitation, suspension of system privileges, expulsion

from school, termination of employment and/or legal action as may be appropriate.”

    HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING

Computationally intensive research is supported through the operation of a continuously growing

high performance computing system based on Dell PowerEdge servers with Intel processors

and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Operation of the facility is guided by usage policies endorsed by

the Advisory Committee on Research Technologies. For larger computational tasks that require

several hundred or several thousand simultaneous processors, there are other resources available

to CWRU researchers, such as XSEDE, an open scientific discovery infrastructure funded by the

National Science Foundation. Go to case.edu/its/researchcomputing  for more information.

    DATA VISUALIZATION

Scientific data visualization software is actively maintained on the high performance computing

system, and assistance is available with using it. Currently supported visualization software includes

VisIt and ParaView. The visualization wall at the Kelvin Smith Library is a high-definition display

installation for use by Case Western Reserve University faculty and students who are engaged

in scholarship and research that require high performance computing and large-scale visual

    representations of data.

As a science, visualization is the process of representing data in a form that can clearly and

effectively communicate its meaning. Most visualizations are computer-generated graphics born

from the simulation and modeling of data, which are often 3D. Using visualization, researchers

can see both large and small differences across sets of data and discern meaningful relationships.

Its use is applicable in any discipline where there is a need to identify patterns, singularities and

details that otherwise would not be apparent from raw data. Scholars of mathematics, statistics,

astronomy, physics, geospatial mapping, art and medical imagery, among other disciplines, benefit

from the ability to visualize data. Go to case.edu/its/researchcomputing  for more information.

    LIBRARY DIRECTORY (cont’d)

    THE SOFTWARE YOU NEED

Don’t buy software at retail prices. The Software Center has you covered!

While you are a registered student at CWRU, you can download a variety of software packages,

at no or little cost, which the university has purchased and made available through site licenses

    with software manufacturers. At softwarecenter.case.edu, you’ll find operating system upgrades;

popular titles, such as Microsoft® Office™, Adobe® Acrobat Professional, Symantec™ Endpoint

Protection; and several academic titles, such as MatLab® and SAS®.

For a full listing, go to softwarecenter.case.edu and agree to the end user licensing agreement by

clicking the ”I Agree” button. The software listing is alphabetical and lists which operating systems

    are supported.

For the fastest speed, we recommend that you download software from the Software Center whil

you are on campus and plugged into a wired network connection. To download software from off-

campus, you must connect through the VPN. To download the campus VPN client, please go to

    vpnsetup.case.edu.

    SOFTWARE TRAINING

LYNDA.COM™ The lynda.com online training library provides video-based learning on

popular software titles, technology and business topics, including Adobe

Creative Suite applications, Microsoft Office, Google Apps, open source

software, multimedia, Web design and programming. Students can enjoy

free access through the CWRU portal at case.edu/its/lynda.

    PROTECT YOUR TECHNOLOGYINVESTMENT

    PHYSICAL SECURITY

We recommend that students protect their

computers from theft by utilizing a cable lock to

secure it to furniture or a stationary structure. This

is important even when relaxing in living areas.

To recover a computer in the event that it is stolen,

we recommend Absolute® Software’s ComputraceLoJack for Laptops. This program utilizes a BIOS-

based agent to provide guaranteed laptop theft

recovery. Visit absolute.com for more details.

    DATA SECURITY

It’s important to back up the data on your computer in case it catches a virus, is lost or is stolen.

Options for data backup include an external hard drive and online services, such as Carbonite.

Carbonite is a cost-effective, efficient means for personal computer backup and file r etrieval that

provides unlimited, secure, automatic backup of files on your desktop or laptop computer. For more

    information, go to carbonite.com.

    SAFEGUARDING SENSITIVE OR RESTRICTEDINFORMATION

As a graduate or professional student who is employed at CWRU, you may have access to

sensitive or restricted information. If you do, it is your responsibility to safeguard it fromdamage, loss, misuse or unauthorized disclosure. To review the policy r egarding use of restricted

information, go to case.edu/its/policies.html  and choose the Information Security Policies &

    WIRELESS ACCESS

The CaseWireless network is secure, fast and reserved for the use of the

CWRU community. It’s five times faster than the available public wireless

network, and its encryption protects you and your computer from data theft and attack.

To configure your device to connect to CaseWireless for the first time, go to

wireless-setup.case.edu. Once you go to this website, it will detect or allow you to select your

operating system, present the appropriate installation file and provide you with the proper steps

    for installation.

If you have visitors to campus, they are welcomed to use the CaseGuest wireless network on their

networked devices. This public network is unsecured and does not require a CWRU Network ID for

access. Because CaseGuest is a public network, users are urged to use a VPN client to encrypt thei

connection if they plan to access sensitive data while using it.

For these reasons, CWRU students should only use CaseWireless, not CaseGuest.

Visitors who come from educational or research institutions may be able to use eduroam, a secure

wireless network that is accessible using their home institution’s network credentials. You also ca

use eduroam when you’re away from campus and visiting a participating eduroam institution. For

more information on eduroam, go tohelp.case.edu and click ”Internet/Network Connectivity.”

    THE NETWORK

The CWRU data and voice network supports the mission of the university as a research- and

education-focused organization. As one of the largest, fastest networks i n higher education, the

gigabit bandwidth operates many hundreds of times faster than what you would experience

using a broadband or DSL connection. This powerful research, communication and social medium

enables and promotes interaction with people down the hall and around the world.

There are two ways that students can access the power of the network: through a wired Ethernet

connection or the wireless network. The wired network is inherently faster because each user gets

a one-gigabit connection; wireless users must share the gigabit bandwidth.

    WIRED NETWORK

Students in residence halls at Case Western Reserve University can access the Internet at speeds

of one gigabit per second (Gbps) on the National LambdaRail (NLR). This connection conveniently

is separate from the rest of the campus, which means that the traffic from either source won’t

    interfere with the other.

Founded and funded by the U.S. research and education community, the super-high-speed

connection does not restrict users’ usage or bandwidth. Universities, research institutions, NASA and

the U.S. Department of Energy use this powerful service for cutting-edge research and innovation in

disciplines as diverse as atmospheric research, biomedicine, ecology, network science and physics.

The NLR gives residential students at Case Western Reserve unprecedented opportunities to

connect and collaborate with other NLR institutions and students around the world.

Wired access points are available throughout the university, often marked ”CWRUnet” in public

areas. To connect to the wired network at any location, use an Ethernet cable to plug in to a

    network switch or faceplate.22

    KNOW NETWORK RISKS

Raise your awareness of the risks inherent in operating computers in a networked environment.

For more details on computer threats, such as viruses, spam, phishing and spyware, go to

    case.edu/its/infosecurity.

    ANTIVIRUS

CWRU takes network security seriously. As part of our Acceptable Use Policy, we require that

antivirus software be installed and used on all computers in the CWRU technology environment.

Free downloads of the Symantec™ Endpoint Protection antivirus program is available to students,

faculty and staff in the CWRU Software Center at softwarecenter.case.edu.

    PHISHING

As a large, notable university, it’s not uncommon for the CWRU community to be hit with phishing

email. These fraudulent messages appear to come from a legitimate source – even from someone

with [email protected] email address – as well as other universities, the ”help desk,” or your bank. It’s

important that you ignore and delete these email! Here are a few characteristics that will help you

to distinguish phishing email from legitimate email:

      • The email urges you to reply with your username and password.

    • The email urges you to provide personal information, such as your birth date

      or social security number.

      • The email urges you to click a hyperlink and provide personal information.

      • The email warns that your account will be disabled if the email is ignored.

      • The email contains improper grammar and misspellings.

To avoid phishing scams, never reply to suspicious email or click the links provided within the

messages. If you feel the message may be legitimate, go directly to the website by typing the

real URL into your browser or contact the sender to see if you really do need to take the action

described in the email message. Delete the email message from your Inbox and empty it from thedeleted items folder to avoid accidentally accessing the website in the message.

CWRU ITS will NEVER ask you for your personal information or password in an email.

Even the email you receive from us about expiring passwords ask that you go directly to

help.case.edu, rather than clicking a link.

    VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK

CaseWireless is a secure, encrypted network, but many other wired and wireless networks are not.

CWRU provides virtual private network (VPN) for you to use when connecting to an unsecured or

public wired or wireless network. VPN also can be used any time you attempt to connect to secure

CWRU online resources from off campus, such as the Software Center and library databases.

Follow these directions to download, install and run the VPN client:

1  Open your Internet browser and go tovpnsetup.case.edu.

2  Download the Cisco™ AnyConnect client for your operating system.

3  Install the software according to your operating system’s directions.

4  Open AnyConnect and enter ”vpn.case.edu” in the Connect To field. Click “Select.”

5  Enter your CWRU Network ID and password. Click “Connect.”

In the event that you forget to log out of VPN, you automatically will be disconnected after 24 hours.
