Two Per Scholas Quality Assurance graduates

MIDWEST URBAN CITIES VISIT CINCINNATI

Representatives from Midwestern urban citiesenjoyed an area tour guided by Dan Hurley, localfamous historian and current interim President ofthe National Underground Railroad FreedomCenter and some gathered around the JamesBradley statue on the Covington riverfront.

Several key Midwestern urban cities in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota,Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin have joined together to collectively pursue federal,foundation and private funding to improve employment results for more residents of theMidwestern urban cities through increased focus on training, apprenticeships,and coordinated employer engagement among the many companies and healthcareoperations that cover the Midwestern states. Sherry Kelley Marshall was approached asthe first urban city in Ohio by Employ Milwaukee Executive, Earl Buford, who had heardfrom various workforce directors and sector organizations about the SWORWIB's longspan of career pathway successes since 2001 in partnership with career technicalschools and higher education with various employers in construction, manufacturing,information technology and healthcare.

Marshall subsequently recruited Cleveland and Columbus with Ohio now being the threemetro members of the Midwest Urban Strategies Consortium known as "MUSC".Cincinnati hosted the October quarterly meeting for MUSC the full week of October 9-13,2017. The first two days of the weeklong meeting focused on Cincinnati's TechHiredistinctions featuring the CIO Roundtable, tech training with Per Scholas and theSWORWIB support for On-the-Job training accounts from the OMJ Center for Thrive andIngage Partners who shared their social enterprise hiring model as well as MaxTechnical's code camps and the INTERalliance of Greater Cincinnati highlighting theleadership of with Geoff Smith of Partners for A Competitive Workforce.

The SWORWIB thanks Gregg Toebbe (SWORWIB Board Member) and Greg Witzgall ofGreat American Insurance Technology Team for hosting us at the Dixie Terminal Building.Larry Johnson, PhD, Dean & Professor University of Cincinnati College of Education,Criminal Justice, and Human Services as well as UC Assistant Professor Jim Scott who isalso Board Chairman of the INTERalliance. We also thank Principal Kathy Wright for herschool tour and showcasing of the IT coursework for 9th graders at Hughes STEM HighSchool. Additionally, we thank United Way for hosting us in their conference center onWednesday and the OMJ Center team for their tour of our one-stop center and use of thesecond-floor conference room for Thursday's meeting.

Thanks to Kathleen MacQueeney of KR Hospitality Group and Anthony Berin of Findlay Kitchen, the MidwestUrban Strategies Consortium guests from large urban cities in the midwest were treated to a pleasant walkaround Findlay Market and tour of the Findlay Kitchen facility after enjoying a wonderful luncheon prepared byChef Kymberly Wilbon of The Passion Plate.

McQuire (pictured) faced layoff from his job with McSwain Manufacturing. The RapidResponse team was able to match Deron with an excellent job opportunity enhanced byutilizing RR's On the Job Training (OJT) funding. With the help of employer StandardAero's HR Manager Katrina Draper (pictured) Deron avoided layoff and even added to hiscurrent skill set through a full time job and on the job training with Standard Aero.

Supply Chain Management Job Fair

The OMJ Center hosted the Supply Chain/Logistics Job fair on October 17th inconjunction with Jesse Simmons of partners for a competitive workforce.Companies inattendance were UPS, Kroger, Amazon, DHL, Jurgensen Companies and AeroFulfillment.

There were 51 people that attended this Job Fair. Surveys were taken from employers inattendance and the responses were overwhelmingly positive:

The Sharonville Manufacturing Forum was held on October 17, 2017 by the SharonvilleChamber of Commerce. The workshop sessions featuring SWORWIB were delivered bySherry Kelley Marshall, President & CEO of the Southwest Ohio Region WorkforceInvestment Board. Marshall presented on the topic of "Using Public Resources to Meetyour Workforce Needs." This Manufacturing Forum focused on Workforce Developmentand was hosted at the new CSZ/A GenTherm Company offices also included a tour oftheir manufacturing and office facilities in Sharonville.

General Electric Women Leaders In Manufacturing

GE conducted a half day site visit devoted to connecting young women to high performingprofessionals in a casual environment to foster leadership, mentoring and a greaterunderstanding of roles in manufacturing industry.

These young women attended Aiken New Tech, North College Hill, R.A. Taft InformationTechnology, Shroder Paideia H.S., Western Hills University, Withrow University andWoodward Career Tech. They all came together to network with female professionals andlearn about their roles in the manufacturing industry, hear from senior leaders of theindustry at GE Aviation as well as have an opportunity for hands on exercises in additivemanufacturing and robotics. Students participated in round table discussions with GEprofessionals from engineering, sales, finance, accounting, human resources, operationsand information technology.

Fearless Front line Leader Awards

October is National Manufacturing Month and on the evening of October 26, 2017 acrowd of hundreds gathered at Great American Ballpark to celebrate at the 2017 FearlessFrontline Leader Awards. More than thirty leaders were selected as this year's FearlessFrontline Leaders. Each of them were individually recognized and celebrated by the entireaudience. Four Fearless Frontline Leaders were recognized as 2017 winners. This year's nomineesincluded a far higher percentage of women and, for the first time, three of the winnerswere women. This year's winners came from as close as Hamilton County, OH and as far as EnsenadaMexico:

Nancy Abris, a leader from Allegion, travelled from Ensenada, Mexico to accept heraward.Donella Armstrong, a leader from General Electric, travelled from Louisville, KY,USA to accept her award.Denise Ruffin, a leader from The Gorilla Glue Company, stunned the audience withher boldly transparent stories of her journey toward leadership and the way shecares for her team.Joe Taylor, a leader from thyssenkrupp Bilstein of America, was also accompaniedby a large group of other honorees and colleagues representing their Hamilton, OHlocation.

The SWORWIB in particular recognizes Denise Ruffin, Team Lead at The Gorilla GlueCompany. Her acceptance speech was so awe inspiring that the audience wastransported from tears to laughter by the humility and honesty of a frontline leader who lefther job "doing taxes" to "try manufacturing" where she found her calling as a servantleader. Denise is a Hyde Park resident and we are proud to have her as a FearlessFrontline Leader in our community.

In an ongoing effort to reach out to young adults seeking job and career information andguidance, OMJ Cincinnati-Hamilton County has started work with Colerain High School.The goal of the college and career fair is to educate young adults on the many optionsopen to them. Because so many mature workers are retiring along with the skills they'veobtained over many years, it's vital that we work to fill that gap.

Job Corps Center: Panther Students Community Service Project

On October 2nd, seven Cincinnati Job Corps students and Sharon Thompson as the workexperience coordinator did a community service at the local Ohio Means Jobs Center. The project included cleaning - up the parking lots and pulling weeds. The studentsworked hard and received credit for doing community service.

CYC and Citi Foundation Grant Award

The Citi Foundation recently announced that Cincinnati Youth Collaborative has been

awarded a grant from the 2017 Youth Workforce Fund, as part of its Pathways toProgress initiative to provide youth both in the U.S. and around the world with training andaccess to jobs, including paid apprenticeships and internships. Cincinnati YouthCollaborative (CYC) will receive a grant of $250,000 to support its mission of empoweringvulnerable students to overcome obstacles and succeed in education, career and life. CYC's Work Readiness program, Jobs for Cincinnati Graduates, provides high-schoolstudents core employment skills, enrichment experiences, community service activitiesand access to eight-weeks of paid internship.

The 5th Annual Young Not Silent (YNS) will be happening Saturday, November 18

from 10 am-6:30 pm at the Tangeman University Center on UC's campus. YNSprovides workshops, community conversations, resources, food, and a talentshowcase - all for FREE.

Bringing over 400 youth in grades 7-12 from throughout Greater Cincinnati together,Young, Not Silent challenges the old adage that "children should be seen and notheard" and demands that young people be seen as the theme is "Breaking DownBarriers" and all workshops and presentations will identify internal and externalbarriers young people face on their path to adulthood and equip them with the skillsto address and break through those barriers.

This event is planned by young people, for young people and focused on creating aday for young people to learn, dialogue and engage in authentic conversation aboutthe issues that shape their lives in their homes, schools, and communities.
