Humanetics has been working closely with the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHTSA) and European safety initiatives such as FIT, APROSYS, and THORAX to update the THOR-M crash test dummy with much improved and anticipated modernizations to its design, usability, and handling. In addition, multiple internal programs have been launched with the goals of enhancing customer service and increasing the ability to produce the THOR-M at a faster rate to meet market demand as this next update to the U.S. NCAP starts to take shape.

Since the deliveries of the first THOR-M dummies, Humanetics has been actively seeking feedback from the worldwide safety community in order to progress the THOR-M further. More than two dozen user-defined improvements have been implemented into the current design which substantially increases the durability and the value of the dummy.

Humanetics has also begun to offer standardized instrumentation packages as part of the ATD Complexity Reduction Program designed to simplify the ordering and manufacturing processes; thereby growing the production capacity to supply additional THOR-M dummies to the market globally. To further simplify the experiences of ATD users, additional Subscription and Maintenance Programs

are now available for the ATD in lieu of the traditional purchase options. Subscribers to the THOR-M will have the ability to pay monthly or yearly installments to keep the dummy for the long term; included are annual calibration and design update services as well as spare part discounts that make the subscription program valuable. Separate maintenance programs are also offered for both purchased and subscription THOR-Ms which will benefit with the overall tasks and maintenance of this intricate ATD. For a breakdown of these packages, please refer to page 2 of this newsletter.

With these new program developments in place, Humanetics has escalated resources dedicated to the production of the THOR-M ATDs to meet market demand as the U.S. NCAP seeks to make THOR an advanced tool that will further the science of crash testing and safety evaluation.

In December 2015, the U.S. New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) proposed updates to their protocols that include provisions for advanced ATDs like the WorldSID 50th, THOR-M and Flex-PLI for pedestrian Safety.

| Spring/Summer 2016| humaneticsatd.com HUMANETICS2 of 4 HUMANETICS humaneticsatd.com | Spring/Summer 2016 | 3 of 4!In response to worldwide customer feedback, Humanetics now offers

a Platinum Spare Parts Program in an effort to enhance immediate component availability on select high demand parts.

Over the past few years, Humanetics has consistently reduced delivery times on the most frequently requested spare parts. However, our Platinum Express Program takes it to the “next plateau” by offering a new level of service for the most utilized spare parts that can ship from our North American manufacturing facilities by the end of the next business day.

In particular, the newest THOR-M dummy has quickly become one of the most tested ATD for the global market. To help with the increasing need for spare parts, Humanetics has included an assortment of THOR-M components in the Platinum Program available for immediate shipment. The current Platinum Spare Parts available may grow as more historical data is gathered to support the increasing demand of the THOR-M. The complete list of available THOR-M components within this Program can be found at www.humaneticsatd.com.

Finite Element Model HH305 V1.0The harmonized Hybrid III 5th female Euro NCAP compliant dummy FE V1.0 model has been released and made available to users commercially (referred as HH305 V1.0 hereafter). Euro NCAP requires the use of the harmonized SAE jacket for the Hybrid III 5th dummy for regulatory testing.

The development of HH305 V1.0 FE model particularly focused on accuracy of the thorax performance. The thorax performance of the model was evaluated for a variety of loading conditions such as single rib drop tests, thorax pendulum impact tests and the new aggressive seatbelt pretension tests. The seatbelt

pretension tests were conducted in collaboration with Ford Motor Company and aimed to improve the thorax correlation for relatively smaller chest deflection at a faster impact rate.

The HH305 V1.0 model performance is significantly better compared to all the predecessor Hybrid III 5th models in all the simulated thorax load cases. The HH305 V1.0 FE models for both LS-DYNA and PAM-CRASH format are currently available to customers.

Alongside the hardware development of the THOR 5th ATD (Test device for Human Occupant Restraint

5th percentile female) in cooperation with NHTSA, the development of the THOR-05 FE model is also well underway within the CAE department of Humanetics to compliment this initiative.

As with all FE models, geometry, material modeling and structural connectivity are of focus when developing this model. Furthermore, the Humanetics CAE group has first-hand access to the physical counterpart that allows the model to incorporate the latest hardware design features.

The first FE model of the THOR-05F (V0.5alpha) is expected to be officially released in the 3rd quarter of 2017. This highly anticipated model will consist of a state-of-the-art mesh and appropriate connectivity of instrumentation, basic material models and some preliminary validations to ensure model functionality.

Elderly ATD 3D Printing Brings Simulated Human Organs to Crash Test Dummies

As cited in the previous issue of Newsline (Fall 2015), the development of the very first advanced Elderly ATD (representing 70 year old small female) has been set into motion by Humanetics with the assistance and research data provided by the International Center for Automotive Medicine (ICAM) and the University of

Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI).

As part of this R&D development process, an initiative is underway at Humanetics to understand and promote new fields of manufacturing methodologies such as the use of multiple material 3D printing technologies. Using materials such as plastics, foams, and even metals, complex geometric designs and consistent p e r f o r m a n c e characteristics can easily be obtained. This research may ultimately serve to enhance the designs of the next generation of dummies by incorporating new manufacturing technologies that can produce more humanlike anatomies.

In order to understand the dynamic properties of internal human organs such as the liver and spleen, Humanetics is working closely with ICAM to define anatomical features and verify performance attributes. To further understand loading parameters and organ responses, comparison work is also being conducted at Humanetics using biological equivalents. The simulated human organs have unique “foam” structures that are segmented and vary in density and response characteristics. Regional stiffness can be programmed into the organs by adjusting the printed attributes at any location. This various “programming” within the sections of the human torso is useful in pinpointing injury thresholds on the body where safety belts may contact and restrain occupants during crash situations.

The development of 3D printed simulated organs may one day give safety researchers new tools that can help researchers

better understand diverse injury mechanisms and design vehicles that protect occupants with ever increasing effectiveness.
