SINCE LAST WEEK ...
Today's tie v Carnoustie is a week late, but hopefully it does go ahead. The mid and north east areas of the country were hit by a retty severe frost last Friday evening and there was no chance of the game on the Canniepairt going ahead . The sun melted 80% of the pitch by I pm but it remained rock solid. The day wasn't wasted , however, with the players being put through a strenuous training programme between 12 and 2pm. The weather conditions also restricted Monday 's training but thanks to a bit of innovation another good session resulted . By Wednesday the ground wasn.'t only hard but also snow covered so it was off to the JIB Fitness Centre (or a Spin FjtQess session. Murray Urquhart would have missed last week ' s game and is still doubtful for today .
_, ... , ****
No postponement on Saturday night though , when a full house enjoyed the Footballers' Supper in the Bell Rock Tavern. John ' Bletper' Brown from the Evening Telegraph hosted the Supper , the highlight of which was the excellent raconteur John Gahagan. Th_e meal and good service also received favourable comment, and a good raffle and auction gave club (unds a timely boost. Thanks to all who contributed to the evening 's success.
**** Histon , from a town o--f merely 4,500 souls, defeated Leeds United, European Champions 1,eag ue semi-finalists as recently as 2001, in the FA Cup last Saturday. The tie was of passing interest to TFC fans. Tayport lost 4-0 pre-season to Durham Cjty . Durham then racked up 28 games without defeat including 3 FA Cup tie wins before being drawn against Histon and going down in a replay. Histon then knocked out Swindon ( effectively getting Maurice MaJpas the sack) before toppling Leeds .
•J These non-lea gue clubs play some amount of garoes. Durham are schedule d to play 7 games in the next 4 weeks including Boxing Day and New Years Day.
Carrigan set to quit Accies STRIKER Brian Carri gan could be set for a returq to the junior rank s after being frozen out afHamil ton.
The 29-year•old has seen hi s dream switch to the SPL tum sour, fai lin g to make a first•team appearance this term.
Carrigan re-joined Hamilton on a on~year deal in the summer af ter ne tting an incredibl e 66 goa ls in t\•to seaso ns at Linlithg ow Rose.
But hi s £17 ,SOO move - th e record fee for a junior p layer in Scotland - has failed to go to plan at New Douglas Park.
Now it appears Rqse and1rvine Meadow are leading the chase for Carrigan.

. TODAY'teAMI CITYLINK SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP AYPORTvCARN OUSTIEPANMURE
Today's game is a repeat of last season's third round tie, the only difference
being that last year Carnoustie's name was first out of the hat .. The teams
fought out a 2-2 draw across the water but in the replay at the Canniepairt,
Tayport made the last 32 with a five goal spree. It was something of an event
for the suffering Port support who hadn't exactly been treated to an avalanche
of goals in many games before that tie . Nor have they been since. Indeed in the
intervening twelve months , Tayport haven't hit five goals in any game.
The visitors were in something of disarray in that December replay and the
season was to end in further disappointment for the Gowfers with relegation to
the Premier Division . Like Tayport, however, they finished their season on a
high with a local cup win.
It's a determined Carnoustie who will take the field today, not only to gain
some revenge for last season's disappointment but also anxious to erase the
memory of last Saturday's unexpected home defeat by North End in the league.
It was Camoustie 's first defeat of the campaign , but coming on the back of a
disappointing draw at Blairgowrie , it's not the kind of preparation for which
they would be looking.
Tayport, too, didn 't get a pre-cup-tie boost when going down by the only goal
of the game at Hill of Beath . Although failing to score yet again on the road,
Tayport will have taken some confidence from the number of chances created.
With Willie Gamer away on business arranged prior to his appointment at the
club, assistant manager Jim Moffat will be in charge of team matters today .
Contests between the two clubs separated by the width of the Tay estuary are
always keenly contested affairs. The fact there's a place in the fourth round of
the Scottish Cup at stake merely adds spice to the occasion.
History being made at Thomson Park today
This afternoon's Homecoming Scottish Cup 3rd round tie at Thomson Park between Lochee United and Im Bru Scottish Football League's Ayr United may not be the biggest game ever played on by a Junior side on Tayside but it is, without any shadow of doubt, the most significant. After decades of burying their heads in the sand, the Scottish Football As
sociation finally took a shake to themselves and opened r,o---..---, the Scottish Cup to all last season. Linlithgow Rose and Pollok showed the way and this season East Super League champions Lochee United have taken up their mantle to give the competition a further touch of romance.
Never mind fancy dressing rooms, hordes of fluorescent vested police and stewards , being told to sit down or be arrested in all seater stadiums , crush barriers etc, we 've got a situation at Thomson Park that any junior club and its supporters would love to be in ..... .Junior players and fans dreaming of a place in the next round and a ~ -- -- -. tie at Ibrox or Celtic Park! That 's definitely the magic of the cup.
It ' ll be the biggest crowd seen at Thomson Park at least in a generation , probably in a lifetime for most punters , maybe even ever. Despite the reinstatement of a gate to the Liff Road side of the ground , there are bound to be ~----~ problems getting a crowd approaching four figures into the game, but
again, that's the part of the charm of wee clubs playing games at home at this stage of the competition .
The weather forecast isn ' t particularly good, especially when you consider Lochee is a fair bit above sea level. A postponement will be a nightmare . Imagine all the pies that will have to be found a home until the following week!
A shock on the cards? Here ' s hoping ...

THIS AFfERNOON'S VISITORS CARNOUSTIE PANMURE
Camoustie Panmure are one of the best known names in the Junior game. They've not been on the Scottish football scene for as long as some clubs, but have had several periods of sustained success during most decades since being founded in 1936 but itwas the early part of this century when they really made their mark on the game. Previously, apart from two Scottish Cup semi-final appearances in 1952 v Carnelon and 1978 v Bonnyrigg Rose most of this recognition was at local level.
Of course the Super Leagues have extended awareness to most parts of the country now, but it was The Gowfers ' two Scottish Junior Cup Final appearances in 2001 and 2004 which really raised their profile nationwide. They probably have the unique record of being involved in penalty shoot ._ I
outs in each of their finals after drawing both 0-0, losing one, ,-..- ,__ __ .;;._-t
v Renfrew , and winning one for which no reminders are re- Jon Voigt, The Gowfers' top scorer
quired. Only Steven Narey survives from Carnoustie's pool that day in 2004 , although teammates that day, Ronnie Kenneth and Chris Webster now wear Port colours. By contrast , today ' s Tayport pool still includes Fitzpatrick , Paterson, Wemy ss, Craik , Morris and McNaughton . Camoustie were relegated last season but it' s no surprise to see the bookies have them as favourites to make a quick return to the Super League. Manager Ian Flaherty's squad has undergone drastic surgery since we met here at the third round stage last season . Out have gone Dougie Craig, Wayne Morrison , Barry Donachie, Jon Kelly, Stuart Abbot, Gerry Farrell and Michael Whyte. Filling the gaps are defenders Gavin Beith (formerly Dundee , East Fife, Brechin City and Arbroath) , Jim Scott (ex Stirling Albion , Falkirk) , Garry McLauchlin (ex Downfield and Dundee), midfielder Brian Clark (Dundee & Arbroath) , striker Daryn Smith who had senior experience with St Johnstone, Brechin & Montrose , Euan Hall, Scott Hunter and striker Andy Reilly, on loan from Arbroath. Three players with tenuous Tayport connections will likely be in line for a visitors' jersey, Kevin Steele, who trained at Tayport when playing in the Highland League, centre half Jon Thompson who turned out for us in a 2003 pre-season Super Cup game at Linlithgow , but wasn't signed and Steven Cook who made four appearances for Tayport in 2006/7 whilst on loan from Arbroath. Memories of last week ' s defeat by North End will be put well behind them today as Ian Flaherty gets his troops motivated for what is their biggest game of the season to date.

A WORD FROM WIL LIE
Playing Camoustie at any time is a big game and a big challenge , but playing
them in the Scottish adds that bit of spice to the occasion. Both clubs have done well
in previous years in the competition , and both clubs are therefore looking to pro
gress to the later stages of this years competition .
From our perspective the game comes at a time when our home form over the past
three games has been encouraging, with
wins over Arbroath SC in the Scottish , and
two good league wins over Forfar WE and Bathgate in the Super League.
Last week at Hill Of Beath had both positive and negatives for myself and Jim . On
the negative I felt we did not defend well enough as a team for the first 45 minute s
and had it not been for some great saves from Fitzy we could have gone into the
break more than one goal down . Second half we produced something like the form I would expect , where we created some very good chance s but did not take them .
What Jim and I have done since we came in, is step up the training . For the challenges the lie before us this season I want to make sure that we are physically pre
pared . The players have shown great enthusiasm at training and I believe this is
showing in the commitment and attitude on the park. What we need to do is turn
this into consistent performances , which I am sure will happen and in tum produce better results.
As always your support for the players is crucial. I see us all as a large team work
ing together for the benefit of Tayport . I was really encouraged by the numbers who were at Hill of Beath on Saturday and would ask for your vocal backing today.

"A break from the League, but the fixture is no less
important"
The last fortnight has brought contrasting Super Ceague results for 'Port . Two weeks ago , there was an impressive home win against big-spending Bathgate Thistle , the Scottish Junior Cup holders. Early goals had 'Port well in control of the contest. Reon Juskowiak opened the scoring with a crashing volley , wh ile Barry McNaughton , netted from the penalty spot, after Chris Webster had been fouled inside the box.
In the second half , however , the visitors fell foul to indiscipline , hav. ing two players sent off . This numerical advantage perhaps took the edge off Tayport's performance and there were no further goals for the 'Port support to cheer . The nine men did net, though, courtesy of ex-Oakley striker Jim Lister , and that made for a n·ervy last few minutes . That aside , an encouraging afternoon for the management team of Willie Garner and new assistant , Jim Moffat.
Unfortunately , something of a blip followed last week , at Hill o'Beath. 'Port went down to a solitary Michael Stuart effort , in a first half in which the Haws had several opportunities . Thankfully , Frazer Fitzpatrick was on top form and his saves kept 'Port in contention.
After the break , it was Tayport who dominated, but they could not find the target , not even from the spot. Ronnie Kenneth was fouled midway through the second half, but Barry McNaughton blazed the resultant penalty over the bar - a contrast to the previous weekend . Other misses followed , notably late on, and three points slipped away at Keirs Park.
A break from league action today , but the fixture is no less important , with old Tayside rivals , Carnoustie Panmure , in town, and a place in the fourth round of the Scottish Junior Cup up for grabs .
Support the 'Port !

Carnoustie attempted to immediately redress the balance and only a fine save from Ian Christie thwarted Duncan. .

BOMBER MEETS BAXTER! Tayport FC Commercial Manager John Brown was the only one in the Tayport camp smiling at Haws on Saturday when he lined up with Hill of Beath 's most famou s son, the legendary Jim Baxter.
SNIFFING ABOUT WITH THE SNOUT
Had to chuckle on reading St Andrews United's match report on their recent Scottish Cup tie at Bonnyrigg. The pitch, as we know , has a significant slope, although of all the teams which should be familiar with such topography, it is St Andrews . New Dundas Park was described thus ... . [the pitch! sloped from end to end and from side to side. It must have been developed when spirit levels were all about witches and warlocks, not a surveying accessory!
Kinnoull, lining up at home v Musselburgh last Saturday, had no fewer that five former Tayport players in their starting line-up - Duncan Bruce , Ross Gunnion , Barry Gardiner , Martin Maher and Steve McAllister. St Andrews United, too, have a number of former 'Port players on their teamline - Gus Mi.lone , Steve Fallon, Allan Ramsay and Davie Evans. Still on former Tayport players, Murray McDowell whose season at the Canniepairt added to the list of the many clubs for which he has played , has surfaced again, this time in the colours of Linlithgow Rose. Murray came on as substitute to score a dramatic equaliser v Arniston in the East of Scotland Cup last weekend and openerl his new club ' s account in the penalty shoot out but it was all to no avail, Linlithgow losing at the penalty shoot out stage to suffer a shock exit. Another ex Port man in the news last week was Jon Mitchell, a cup medalist in 2003, who was one of three .Bo'ness players ordered off in their home East of Scotland Cup defeat by Bonnyrigg Rose
Youn g Lucas Morris became Tayport's youngest fan when his father , season ticket holder Alan ' Dancer ' Morris , brought the wee man along to his first match, the Super League game v Bathgate , aged about two weeks. Lucas was as good as gold tiI his old man woke him up bawling at the second Bathgate ordering om
Five goals in a calendar year of Super League football--and three of these goals in one game-that's the sum total of Tayport's striking prowess away from home in 2008. With a record like that, it ' s little wonder that Barry's penalty kick was last seen heading towards Mossmorran!
An anecdote from Harry Redknapp on his father from whom Harry reckons he and son Jamie inherited their passion for football. "My dad would watch (grandson) Jamie every week at Liverpool no matter where he played. He would get the train ," Harry says. "My mum would make a cheese and pickle roll for Jamie to eat after the game . Now, remember, Jamie's playing for Liverpool. "Jamie would meet my dad after the game and take him back to the station and once Steve McManaman was in the car with them. My dad said to me: ' I felt bad because I had a roll for Jamie but not Steve McManaman'. So I said to my dad 'A roll? He's getting thirty grand a week!" But every week after that he had to take two rolls, one for Jamie and one for Macca. That was his life, never missed a game."
