BDSKILLS Feb 2016 It has been wonderful journey since the launch of the training of 30,000 youngsters by the UK based Ernst and Young under Leveraging ICT for Growth, Employment and Governance (LICT) Project of Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) under ICT Division on Jan 31, 2015. During the last one year the EY teams visited different educational institutions and met hundreds of academicians to find out suitable training classes with ICT infrastructure and computer lab facilities within the campus. The teams have so far signed 23 MoUs with leading universities apart from leading colleges affiliated to National University aimed at providing Top Up IT Training and Foundation training. Initiatives have been taken to include more universities and colleges for signing MoUs. Nearly 88 batches were formed which include 30 in Divisions outside Dhaka. Female students form 35% of the total strength. The number is higher than the target of 30. This is very encouraging. There are 7 tracks offered in technology apart from mandatory communication and soft skills. Over 25 Trainers worked every day to make IT/ITES courses interesting. By Feb end, 706 students have completed the training program. A section of the youngsters who have already completed Top Up IT training get job in the IT organizations. “The Top Up IT Program organized by World bank financed LICT Project of BCC helped me starting my career in ICT,” said Kulsum Siddique of American International University of Bangladesh (AIUB). She said the main feature of the training was the IT company NextDot provided me job with lucrative salary immediately after completing the training. It was very helpful for me to do a special (java & AMP) course under Top Up IT program of LICT. I learnt so many things during this course period.it helped me to make strong knowledge base about java and android apps development. Due to my confidence and programming knowledge I got a good job in an IT farm as a Junior Software Developer. Surovi Akter who also awarded job with the B2M Technologies after getting Top Up IT training said I had never thought to get job so quickly as many non ICT graduates are still unemployed and fighting for job. Steps have been taken to establish contact with the IT industries of Bangladesh and other countries. The team established placement dialogue with over 200 companies and signed MoUs with 27 leading IT/ITES companies who committed participation in the program. The placement team forwarded CVs from database prepared after screening strengths of each and every student. After the interviews, the required feedback was taken to improve training content and quality. The companies are also enthusiastic about participation in the program right from the initial stage ie screening of the students, batch formation, ongoing assessment, guest lectures, real life projects and finally selecting the students for the employment. Participation of the leading companies is really heartening. “We are very happy to be a partner with EY on the ambitious project of LICT, Bangladesh Computer Council. We believe the trained candidates would help IT/ITES industry in getting skill resources and boost up the growth. Top Up IT ITES Foundation Skills

In the rapidly changing scenario, continuous learning is must. Freelancing gives opportunity to interact with

international environment while honing the skills in the competitive world. This also helps students to keep up

with the latest in the technology and customer’s expectations.

The skill pool capacity will eventually lead to more investment. The government is putting stress on creating

skilled manpower of twenty first century to implement its Digital Bangladesh vision. The ICT Division has

launched various programmes to create skilled manpower. 55,000 freelancers are being created through

extensive training under Learning and Earning Development Project. The LICT project will also provide six-

month training to 10,000 youths to create freelancers. Hi-tech and Software Technology parks are being built

in divisions and some districts. The Kaliakoir Hi-tech that will eventually lead to employment to 70,000

youths.

E commerce has crossed Taka 300 crore mark already and still growing. We read frequently about launching

of new ecommerce sites.

DataSoft has become first company in Bangladesh to be accredited for CMMI Level 5 closely followed by Leads

Corporation. This brings them league with top international players. Dohatech has won bid to design and

implement eProcurement system for Bhutan.

Great things are happening right here. Those who come forward and pursue career in IT/ITES have bright

future. Today, they have opportunity to play pioneering role and live stories that will make their children

proud!
