2. Has happened.

Mare Nostrum Steering Committee meeting in Florence (Italy) 30

August 2010

A new management staff appointed by the lead partner DiCR for MN, started operating from July 2010. In order to communicate and transmit to partners and associates a renovated working agenda and schedule activities, a strategic meeting was held in Florence calling the five MN partners.

In this meeting participated: from DiCR Carlo Alberto Garzonio, Grazia Tucci, Roberto Sabelli, Michele Coppola, Lucia Azzalin, Fabrizio Fuccello, Giorgio Risicaris; from USJ/MAJAL-ALBA Liliane Buccianti Barakat and Claudine Abdelmassih; from Municipality of Tyre Clementine Laratte; Georges Zouain EH4 Project Manager and Alberto Brizio from HYDEA. Partners from Medieval City of Rhodes and Paralleli, had a video conference during the meeting.

The output of the meeting was an action plan of intensive activities, shared by MN partners. Such activities are supposed to be undertaken until the next Tyre meeting and be completed by the end of 2010, finalizing foreseen deliverables.

The agenda and the report of the Florence meeting can be downloaded by the MN web-site www.eh4-marenostrum.net and by the “Euromed Heritage IV” web-site restricted area of MN www.euromedheritage.net

3. Short Mare Nostrum stories.

The Melkart logo story. BRANDING THE CRAFTSMEN’S ITINERARY

One of the planned actions for Mare Nostrum’s awareness raising campaign is the creation of a tourist brochure on artisan activities in the MN heritage sites. As first step is created by MN a brand for an itinerary and for the local products alongside it. After a

research on the Phoenician culture, USJ/MAJAL proposed the name “MELKART” which was the name of the main god of Tyre (from the Phoenician “Milk-Qart “King of the City”). He was the protector of the city of Tyre and its activities. Some even refer to him as the god of craftsmen. In the word MELKART, we can also find the anagram of the word M-A-R-K-E-T, referring to the trade

activities which spread a common culture along the Mediterranean coasts, the first two letters being those of “Mediterranean” and the last three being “Art”.

To this aim, a logo design competition was organized

among 17 students from the ALBA (Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts in Beirut) at the Department of Graphic Design. An internal vote was then launched among all Partners and Associates of the project MARE NOSTRUM. The winner was the student Marie-José Issa who was also asked to elaborate the handicraft pamphlet: she came up with a fascinating brochure which brings back to the fantastic world of Phoenician crafts.

The thalatta-thalatta (the sea – the sea) story in Rhodes (Greece).

The House of Europe in Rhodes, in the frame of the European project «Mare Nostrum», with the support of the Prefecture of the Dodecanese and the Municipality Office of the Medieval City of Rhodes, organized a «musical evening» at the courtyard of the

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 20.30h.

The program included music from the six participating in the project

«Mare Nostrum» Mediterranean countries: Lebanon, Syria, Malta, Italy, Tunisia and Greece. The band’s name was «Silk Caravan» The performing musicians were: Sapfo Stavrides-voice, Elli Yannaki-Uti,vocals, Kostas Ghionis-contrabasso, Anna Nikitiades-ric, darbuka, kahon, bedir, Vassilis Costides-ghitar, Dimitris Hatziplis-ghitar, mandolin and Nassuan Farok, voice, violin.

Community architecture in Tyre (Lebanon).

Activities of the Mare Nostrum Work Package 2 “Community Architecture”, performed in our

Tyre Phoenician heritage site, are completed. The MN project partner, Paralleli-Euromediterranean Institute,

managed a pilot experience of participatory planning in Tyre. This experience aimed – in line with the overall objectives of the Mare Nostrum project – on one side at contributing to the promotion and awareness-raising of the heritage value of historic Mediterranean port-cities along

the Phoenician routes, on the other side at suggesting guidelines for new tourist itineraries in the cities of reference.

The participatory planning experience was developed through 7 main steps during two missions in Tyre, Lebanon (February 2010 and April 2010): 1) Mapping the needs: interviews with local stakeholders; 2) two technical meetings and a 1 survey with the Municipality; 3) two technical meetings with project

team and partners; 4) on-site interviews with selected local actors and long time inhabitants of the neighbourhood; 5) two Focus Groups (Themes: a-Community active role in touristic development and heritage preservation; b-enhancing the touristic offer of Tyre); 6) Three neighbourhood walks; 7) Six guide lines for the definition of new sustainable tourist itineraries.

A preliminary mapping of the area provided a detailed albeit concise

picture of the situation in Tyre in relation to tourism, highlighting difficulties but also strengths of the sector.

The following participatory planning experience - initially focused on the old town of Tyre, extend subsequently to the whole touristic system in the city urban agglomeration and related inland and coastline territory, including the sea and undersea - involved the local stakeholders (local actors, stakeholders, community leaders and local administration) into active discussions and participated activities, aimed at raising awareness, enhancing the knowledge and the value given to the tangible and intangible heritage, and to foster the suggestion of alternative/ sustainable tourist routes linking

the sea front, the city core to the most important archaeological, historical and naturalistic sites (in line with the overall objectives of the Mare Nostrum project).

The Tyre community proved – in our opinion – to be rich in cultural, civic, technical and professional resources that might broadly

contribute to the project’s development in all phases (concept, communication, technical solutions, construction, maintenance and long-term management).

The participatory planning process led us to define six guidelines to be taken into account to define new touristic itineraries: 1) A right place for the Mare Nostrum info point; 2) Connecting the waterfront; 3) See

the undersea; 4) enlarge Tyre; 5) Arts & crafts for the shopping Tourist; 6) Multicultural and multi confessional.

Mare Nostrum scientific field mission in Tartous (Syria).

The field mission “Mare Nostrum - A Heritage Trail along the Phoenician maritime routes and through the historic port cities” was held from April 26, 2010 to May 7, 2010 in the Governorate of Tartous. The on site research was conducted in accordance with the WP4 objectives: on the one hand a survey campaign was set up to acquire metric and qualitative data on the structures chosen as samples; this provided the necessary information for the systematic analysis(chronologic phases, construction techniques, state of preservation) required to prepare conservation guidelines; on the other hand an enormous amount of photographic and video documentation was collected for the 3D models that were produced in the first phase; this documentation is being used for multimedia popularization and communication of the most interesting sites: architectural heritage, landscape and archaeological sites in the

territory of Tartous, Amrit and Arwad. In particular: • integrated topographic and laser scanning techniques were used to provide a metric survey of the Knights’ Chapel and the urban spaces inside the Citadel; • the most interesting parts of Tartous (the Citadel and the Cathedral/Museum) and the surrounding areas (Arwad Island and the archaeological site at Amrit) were photographed for 3D modeling for communication projects (virtual tours, integrated video and multimedia products on CD / DVD, valuable material for improving the communication capabilities of web sites). Given the scale of the survey, the methods used (laser scanning, topography and photogrammetry) make possible to integrate the documentation previously collected in order to achieve the project’s goals: defining re-qualification projects, tourist

itineraries and explanatory panels. The digital nature of the data also means that the information can be structured in such a way as to facilitate on line use. By Grazia Tucci, DiCR (Italy). The scientific survey campaign in Tartous for Work Package 4 “Brand the Port-City sites physical connection” is completed and the Scientific Report is published on the project web-site www.eh4-marenostrum.net and on the “Euromed Heritage IV” web-site restricted area of MN www.euromedheritage.net

“I was born in the old town, now I’ve moved back to live here with my family. Together with other inhabitants we founded an association. The situation is desperate. The behavior of people in bars and clubs is out of control. There are no facilities for those who live here. We take care of tourists, but who does take care of the residents?”

Zafeiris Skandaliaris, Rhodes, Association of residents “Inside the wall”.

“I was born in Kalimnos and my parents moved to Rhodes when I was three months old. I’ve lived in the old town for 67 years, moving to the new part is too expensive. I like here, tourists are nice but the area is very loud”.

When I was young those walls were surrounded by houses. You can still see the traces. My grandfather’s house was there”.
