For better or worse, this

is the captain speaking.

Well, the soon-to-be

captain, anyway.

In two weeks, I take

over as president of the

Rotary Club of Las Ve-

gas West from the re-

doubtable Steve Segal.

Steve and the marvel-

ous Steve Halvorson

who preceded him both

are hard-working busi-

nessmen. Both had to

tread the grapes of la-

bor during their tenures

as Rotary president.

Your humble servant isa retired old fart , but he

wonders where he’ll find

the time and energy

enough to match the

two Steves in the fabu-

lous job each did in

guiding and directing

our Rotary club.

As I prepare to take office as

president, I thank both Steves for

 their fine leadership.

I also thank all the board and

committee members who have

worked so hard to keep our club

vibrant, compelling and vital to our

community.

Here’s a thank you, too, to each

and every Rotarian in our club.

Everyone has contributed in some

way to help keep us the best Ro-

tary club in the known world.

At his last board meeting of his

presidential term, Steve Segal

reiterated the Rotary president’s

prayer that is drummed into heads

at the annual President-Elect

Training session:

“Lord, please do not let the club

fall apart during my year.”

Steve said he was grateful for the

divine grace that allowed him to

bequeath a healthy and dynamic

club to his successor — one that

had not fallen apart.

My religious views do not allow me

  to deliver a Rotary president’s

prayer. But I will swear upon oath

that I will do my utmost to make

sure this club does not fall apart

during MY year.

I’ve been a Rotarian nigh on 30

years, but I’ve not been in this

club very long. And so I am acutely

aware of the honor I have been

paid by being elected president so

quickly.

Then again, nobody else wanted

the job; I was in the bathroom

when the vote was taken; and it

was my turn in the barrel.

Apart from promising that the club

will not fall apart, I also pledge to

be a safe pair of hands in guiding

 the club to the future.

I will start as I mean to go on: My

first club meeting as president,

July 6, will be an assembly.

Our program will deal with the

pulse of the club: Who and what

we are; where we have been; and

what kind of a club we want to be.

Brett Grant   told me to expect just

members of the board and per-

haps three others at that meeting

— coming as it does, in the middle

of summer. But I think it is impor-

tant to make a statement. It also

will help us focus on a concern of

mine — the poor attendance we

too often have at our meetings.

The second meeting of the year —

July 13 — also will address a

major issue: membership. We will

meet in joint session with the

Fremont club, AT the Fremont

club. Our speaker with be PDG

Barb Risher-Welch, district mem-

bership chair.

I would love to see all members

attend both meetings — but I am a

realist.

Thanks for reading . I needed to

say these things. And anyway, I

had to fill up the space between

 the ads.
