    This week we are reading

    about animal groups: mam-

    mals, reptiles, amphibians,

fish, and birds. We will con-

    centrate on amphibians and

    fish. Beginning Wednesday the

    science study will be Plants

    and Seeds.

    During our science studies the

    children are learning how to

    look for details in pictures,

    photographs, and diagrams.

This week the text feature of

    labeling diagrams is also a

    reading focus.

Science: I can tell what plants and animals need to live. I can identify the partsof plants or fruits using diagrams.

Reading Workshop: We are beginning a unit: Readers Climb Inside Their Books.

Readers make connections to what they read by using their background knowl-

edge of events in their own lives. Readers call this using our schema. We willmake connections to several books: The Relatives Came, Ira Sleeps Over, and

    Oliver Button is a Sissy.

Writing Workshop: Just as readers use their schema, writers do also. We will

make our own schema heart to develop topics for writing personal narratives.

As we write, we will add details, use our writers rubric, and begin to edit.

Please note: As the days become cooler, please send a

    jacket for outdoors.

at our week. Last week we

    searched for nouns that were

    placed around the room. The

    children sorted them into
