C lose to 500 visitors celebrated their Holiday Season at the Botanical Gardens & Nature Center, December 1 and 2, for the first “Holly Days,” with a 20-foot lighted Fraser Fir as centerpiece, donated by Board

member Joyce Barnette. Santa’s spot for family photos was another large tree in the Rose Garden Pavilion, where lots of family memories were captured, with optional parrots or reptiles in the pictures. Other holiday activities included Christmas stories, Nature Play, children’s crafts and Parrot Talk. Thanks to our Animal Care staff and volunteers, especially Bruce Benedict, who did much of the “heavy lifting and listening” all weekend! Trees and other décor were installed and decorated by Facilities Director Larry Lysinger, and assistant Rudy Liserio.

Outdoor weddings seem to be gaining popularity, as bookings have picked up for the New Year. A recent Instagram post featured a Botanical Gardens wedding, and

we couldn’t resist asking to borrow this photo. For wedding or any other celebration booking, contact Office Manager Kathie Waid, 361-852-2100; [email protected], who can provide all necessary details and rental costs. m

Surprise addition to “GATEWAY PROJECT” funded by Dr. Gaylord and Sue Hoyt . . .keeping a ‘roof over our heads’

L ate last year, water began dripping from the ceiling in the Visitors Center Nature’s Boutique! Roof inspection revealed the original standing-seam

metal roof on the circa-1995 building was beginning to deteriorate from age, and soon would begin leaking in other places, such as the Resident Reptile area. Thus an unplanned phase of the “Gateway Project” was added, bids taken, with roof replacement and interior damage repair at approximately $18,000. The budget—already suffering from downturns in visitors, a lingering area-wide effect of Hurricane Harvey, plus unusually wet and cool fall weather—of course did not include this! So all were exceeding pleased when Dr. Gaylord and Sue Hoyt, also donors of the Samuel Jones Orchid Conservatory Reverse Osmosis System, heard about the roof problem, and quickly committed to cover both roof replacement and cosmetic repairs inside the Visitors Center—a most welcome and generous surprise! m

It’s been six years since a membership increase, four years since admission changed!

A fter a mid-year budget review and planning for 2019, it became apparent there would be shortfalls in budget projections caused by three factors—(1) Hurricane Harvey’s lingering impact on visitor admission revenues area-

wide; (2) expected impact of long-term traffic avoidance due to welcome but inconvenient widening of S. Staples (FM2444) to five lanes, to be completed early this year; and (3) wetter and colder than normal September, October and November weather affecting a mainly outdoor attraction.

With only so many sources of revenue, a look back showed no membership dues increase since 2013; and the last admissions change in 2015. Finally, comparisons with our fellow non-profit educational and cultural attractions showed we needed to do what’s always put off as long as possible, with many budget cuts in the process.

Botanical Gardens memberships carry more benefits than most, including free classes, nursery discounts, free national magazine subscription, and free admission to 325 other botanical gardens or arboreta in the United States. Your next membership renewal, or a new membership, will show “Couples” going from $45 to $50 annually; and a “Family” or “Grandparent” membership changing from $60 to $75. “Single” memberships will remain at $35! No changes will be made in upper level categories which carry guest pass privileges, either.

Incentive to join or renew will rise with reasonable admissions increases, April 1, when all admissions categories will increase by $1. Adults ages 13-59 will change to $9. Ages 60 and up, active military personnel, and college students will be $7, while youth ages 3 through 12 will be charged $5. Under age three, like members, are admitted free.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to your next visit! (Membership form, Page 8)m
