Give Blood on College Walk

Give blood and save a life on college walk March 3­5.

Basic requirements for blood donors

Be in generally good health and feel wellBe at least 17 years of age (no upper age limit)Weigh at least 110 pounds

Other requirements:

Eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids before donating.Bring picture identification: driver's license, school ID,passport, or military ID. The San Diego Blood Bank requiresproof of identification for all donors.Bring your donor ID card, if you have one.

All Campus Commencement set for June 16

The class of 2016 will be the first to participate in a newcommencement tradition­a campus­wide ceremony at UC SanDiego. The ceremony will include the conferring of degrees forgraduating seniors from the undergraduate colleges, as wellgraduate students from the Graduate Division, the Rady School ofManagement and the School of International Relations and PacificStudies. "We are very excited to begin a new commencement tradition at UCSan Diego," said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. "We are oneuniversity, one UC San Diego community. Creating a tradition thatrecognizes all of our graduates and their achievements, together, isthe most fitting way to honor our newest alumni."A Campus­Wide Commencement Planning Committee­whichincluded representatives from the undergraduate colleges, GraduateDivision, Alumni Affairs, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs,Associated Students and the Graduate Student Association, amongothers­studied the proposal to establish a campus­wide ceremonyand made the recommendation to begin the tradition in June 2016.The committee reviewed logistics and goals, agreeing that a 2016event would allow appropriate lead time to communicate and planfor a more inclusive, unified commencement and allow the campusleadership to identify a high­profile speaker. The Chancellor hasaccepted the committee's recommendation.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday (FREE CAKE)Join us Monday, March 2, when theUC San Diego campus once againcelebrates the birthday of ourfavorite author, Theodor SeussGeisel, otherwise known as Dr.Seuss. The party will kick offat noon in front of Geisel Library, andwill include musical entertainment byScott Paulson and The Teeny Tiny PitOrchestra, playing tunes from The

University Librarian Brian Schottlaender will be on hand to pass outcake and greet attendees, along with other Universityrepresentatives. Also, Hats Off to Dr. Seuss!, an exhibit of unique,historic hats from Ted Geisel's personal collection, is now on displaythrough March 22 in the public area of Geisel Library's SpecialCollections & Archives. The hats are exhibited in a turn­of­the­century steamer trunk, also described as the "Hat Closet" and canbe viewed during the week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 2 andfrom 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on other weekdays.

FAFSA Deadline March 2nd

The deadline for the FAFSA to receive priority funding is Monday,March 2nd.

Important facts you should know about FAFSA:

You must file a FAFSA before each academic year to beconsidered for financial aid.The FAFSA application opens January 1 each year.The UCSD school code for your FAFSA is 001317.The U.S. government, California, and UCSD base financial aid,including grants, loans, and work­study, on the FAFSA.To receive priority funding, file your FAFSA no laterthan March 2 each year.We recommend using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to completeyour FAFSA. The FAFSA requires current tax information. Youmay submit your FAFSA on time even if you have not yet filedtaxes using tax estimates. Later use the IRS Data RetrievalTool to update your FAFSA with your actual tax numbers. If you are not eligible to use the data retrieval tool, you willneed to verify your tax information with an IRS TaxTranscript.Electronic tax filers will be able to access tax informationapproximately 2 to 3 weeks after filing. Paper filers will beable to access tax information 6 to 8 weeks after filing.To receive priority funding, submit all financial aid documentsby May 21 each year.The Financial Aid Office may ask you for additional documentsafter you file your FAFSA. Check your UCSD e­mail accountoften, and make sure you submit any additional documents orclear any FAFSA rejects by May 21.

speaks about the influence his motherhas had on the play, "When I wasgrowing up and my mom was tellingthese stories about Haiti, the magicwould just sort of coexist with theeveryday. It was important for me toinclude it in a way that didn't supportor validate all of the stereotypes, withbones and zombies. We brought in apriestess of Haitian Voodoo to makesure we got it right.

My mom is my single biggest resource.We're incredibly close; I call her almostevery other day. She and my fathersplit when I was 4, and she took careof all of us. Sula is the closestequivalent to an actual family memberin any of my plays."

Acting alum Mary Catherine Garrison (MFA '99) was recently castin HBO's pilot Mamma Dallas. Written, directed and executiveproduced by Mike White, the half­hour project follows a couple,Carrie Cox (Garrison) and Hugh Cox (Paul Fitzgerald), whounwittingly hire a hard­living drag queen, Liberty (Augustus Prew),as their live­in nanny. Liberty appears to be an attractive womanwith a flirty side ­ but she's really a drag queen with an upbeatpersonality. On a path that leads to jail or prostitution or both,Liberty (also known as Albert) sees a future that will destroy hisbasically optimistic spirit and re­invents himself to get a job as ananny to three children of a conservative Texan family.

Playwriting alum Caridad Svich (MFA '88) has a number of projectscoming up in March.
