Principal’sMessageAsweapproachthemiddleofthisfirsttermtheschoolprogrammesreally start to intensify. Homework should be regular,many sportsteamshavebeen selectedand leadership rolesestablished.ForournewYear7’sthe“PonsonbyExperience” is infullswing.Asparents,themid-pointofthetermoffersyouanopportunitytobeinformedaboutyourchild’sprogress.Pleasemakethemostoftheup-comingStudentLedConferences,bookinginformationbelow.Itisalsotimelytogiveyouafullbreakdownofthereportingprocessfortheyear.TheReportingProcessTwiceayearareportwillcomehome,attheendofTermsTwoandFour. These will contain grades for every subject area. They willinclude a report of your child’s achievement,measured against theNationalStandardsinReading,WritingandMathematics.StudentLedConferenceswithparents,teachersandthestudentalsooccur throughout the year. TheModule subjects have conferenceshalfwaythroughtheirprogramme–usuallyaboutWeekSixofeachterm.TheModulesubjectsareArt,PerformingArts,Music,Science,Home Economics, Textiles and Design, Exploring Technology, SocialSciences and Learning Languages. We also include Health andPhysicalEducationwiththeModularconferences.TheCoresubjects(MathematicsandEnglish)willhavethreeeveningsofConferencesinTermOneandtwoeveningsagaininTermThree.Module subjects operate on a term-by-term basis, while Coresubjectsaretaughtthroughouttheyear.Meetings with relevant teachers can also be arranged byappointmenttodiscussindividualstudents.NickWilsonPrincipal

StudentSafetyattheGateAtthefrontgateonClarenceStreettherearepaintedyellowlineswhichindicatethatthereshouldbenostoppingorparking.Theselinesarethereforreasonsofsafety.Wealsohaveateacherondutyatthegateforsafetyreasons.Whilethemajorityofparentshaveproventoberesponsibleandhavenotpickeduptheirchildrenontheseyellowlinestherehavebeenincidentswhen the teacher on duty has had to remind people about the existence of theyellowlinesandtheneedforcaution.Ourneighboursalsogetveryupsetwithcarssittinginorovertheirdriveways,sopleasedonotdothis.
ClarenceStreetgetsverybusyat3:10pmwithchildrenbeingpickedup.Thissituationturnsinto a traffic jam on wet days, with the whole street getting blocked up. It is a verydangeroussituationforhundredsofchildrenexitingtheschoolallatonce.Pleasebeawareandtakecare,thesafetyofourstudentsisparamount.
Therearealternativestopickingupyourchildatthefrontgateat3:10pm.Firstly,wehavearearcarparkatthebottomofSheehanStreetwherethereisfarlesstraffic.Yourchildcouldmeet you there. Another idea is to avoid the ‘Rush’ altogether, which only ever lasts 10minutes,andpickyourchildup10–15minuteslaterthanusual.ThemaincarparkonClarenceStreetcannotbeusedforpickingupordroppingoffchildren.

ICAS-ExamsThis year the following Australasian Schools’ Competitions are available: Science, English,Writing, DigitalTechnologies,SpellingandMathematics. TheAustralasianSchools’Competitionsprovideanopportunity forall students togainameasureof theirownachievementinanexternalassessmentsituation.Theycanalsobeusedtomonitorindividualprogressinarangeofsubject-relatedskillsandtorecogniseandrewardachievementatall levels. Ifyourchildhasstrengthsinanysubjectofferedweencouragetheirparticipation. Students who participate will each receive a Certificate and a detailed results letter indicating whichquestionstheyansweredcorrectly,identifyingtheskilltestedineachquestionandindicatingthepercentageofstudentsacrossNewZealandwhoansweredeachquestioncorrectly.Theresultsletterisalsousefulforhighlightingstudentstrengthsandweaknesses.Thedocumentsaresuitableforinclusioninaportfolio. EmergencyManagementProceduresLatelastyearPonsonbyIntermediateengagedtheservicesofanindependentcompany,HarrisonTew,whospecialiseinemergencymanagementplanningforschools.Theproceduresdevelopedallowustorespondsafelyandquicklytoarangeofcircumstances.Asacomponentof the implementationof theemergencyprocedures intoour school, specialised traininghasbeenconductedwithseniormanagementandourstaff.ThestudentswillalsoreceivetrainingdirectedattherespectiveagegroupsfromHarrisonTew.The training consists of a subtle but detailed approach to potential threats, and has been successfullyimplementedinalargenumberofschoolsthroughoutNewZealand.Attheconclusionofthetraining,wewillbeconductingalockdownexerciseundertheguidanceandsupportofHarrisonTew.Theexercisewillbeasreal-lifeaspossible,whichwillmeanthatparents/familieswillreceivenotificationbywayoftextand/oremail. The informationpassedwillemphasisethatthis isanexercise/practiceandwillexplainthatallupdatedinformationwillthenbepostedontheschoolwebsite.Priortothisoccurring,canIpleaseremindallparentsandcaregiverstoensureyourcontactdetails(mobilephone numbers and email addresses) are current as thiswill be our communicationwith you, should anemergencyoccurattheschool.Inagenuineincident,shouldyouhearofalockdownorevacuationattheschool,canIpleaseaskthatyoudonotattendtheschoolorphone,aswewillnotbeinapositiontorespond.Yourpresenceat,orcontactwiththeschoolmaymakeitmoredifficultforustomanagethesituationandcouldpotentiallyplaceyourchildrenandinfactyourselvesatrisk.Wethankyouforyoursupport.
