DOG WALKING GROUP I have recently moved into Lutterworth and joined the U3A. I was previously a member of the Walsall U3A and ran a dog walking group there. Is there anyone out there who would be interested in a dog walking group in Lutterworth? I am happy to lead the group but may need a bit of help with locations for walks in the area. I would suggest meeting twice monthly. I have no preference for days so will go with the consensus of those interested. Please give me a call on 01455 203526 or email [email protected] if you are interested. Cate Astbury

Kathy Scott-Simons TOPICAL/CURRENT AFFAIRS GROUP Coordinator: Nigel McNeill - Tel: 641634 A sparsely attended meeting due to holidays but nonetheless enjoyable as we had brief discussions about The Amazon Forest Fires pros (not many) & cons (lots!) Prince Andrew & the allegations, which we had mixed feelings & views about. Is it really a golden Summer of Sport, which we felt had occurred on a few occasions over the years but had added enjoyment to this Summer. Whilst updating each other on all the local news of roads, developments etc!

Next meeting Wednesday 2nd October at Nigel’s house where we hope to welcome two new attendees; Vicki & Bob. Nigel POETRY READING Coordinator: Betty Wilson Tel: 209790 It was good to get the poetry group back together again after the summer break. We read the poetry of John Drinkwater 1882 - 1937. He was a headmaster’s son and started work as an insurance clerk but developed a great interest in the theatre and became manager of the Birmingham Rep. He started writing for the theatre and then developed a love for writing poetry. His poetry was inspired mainly by nature and life around him. He had a great talent in his choice of words and phrases to create an image , atmosphere or emotion. Very enjoyable. Some of the poems we read were, Moonlit Apples, Deer, The Crow, Morning Thanksgiving,The Midlands, and others. November’s meeting will be about The Elements- Earth, Water, Wind and Fire, 2pm Wednesday 6th November at Betty’s house as usual. Refreshments - Betsy. Betty

MUSIC AND MEMORIES 1 Co-ordinator Nohline Ruff Tel. 556985 This month we were very adventurous and travelled all the way to Swinford to Lynne’s home. We were rewarded with warm hospitality and delicious cakes, Thank you Lynne. There were just eight of us which made for a very comfortable group. We started with the Temptations singing ‘My girl’, followed by ‘Under the table’, a poignant story sung by Daniel Cainer, a Jewish singer/songwriter who uses stories from his family’s past as material for his songs. This was followed by a definite increase in volume.’The great gate at Kiev’ is a very dramatic composition by Mussorskgy, some of the clashing chords sounded like the 1812 overture. Willie Nelson,Perry Como and Lionel Ritchie each sang very smooth love songs and we enjoyed Gregory Porter’s distinctive voice with his version of the Beatles tune, ‘Let it be’. We heard another Beatles’ track played by a classical guitarist, Milos. These instrumental renditions prove how well written the Beatles music was. We heard a singer, new to all of us and selected as ‘she looked nice on the CD cover!’ Her name was Jane Monhait an American with a great voice who sang with a good jazz accompaniment. We finished with ‘The long and winding road’ a reference to the recent walking treasure hunt. In October we will be hosted by Anne Gibson, followed by Dilys in November and the Ruffs in December. Contact details will be in the usual reminder email. Nohline

MUSIC AND MEMORIES 2 The second desert island with discs. Co-ordinator Nohline Ruff Tel. 556985 At our September meeting we heard the usual mixed bag of tunes. We started with the seasonal 'Autumn Leaves'. The 'Songbird' Eva Cassidy took us through 'Fields of Gold'. We had 'No regrets' and listened to Lonnie Donegan, whose 'my old man's a dustman' and James Last with the push bike song. Robbie Williams entertained us and Matt Monro ' looked for small pleasures'. Heard 'Love Changes Everything' and Van Morrison's 'Brown Eyed Girl'. Alfie Boe and Michael Ball sang a medley from Les Miserables with the memory of a Birthday treat. We heard a rousing rendition of 'Ride of the Valkyries' and finished with Last Night of the Proms and 'Rule Britannia' and Jerusalem'. The usual variety of tunes was enjoyed by us all. The next meeting will be on Oct. 3rd Pat Deacon NEW AGE KURLING GROUP Coordinators Roy and Barbara Maiden Tel: 550058 What a great turnout this month, both sessions fully subscribed, so we go from strength to strength. The first session was split into 2 groups with Graham Ruff (this was Grahams first time) winning 1 and Maz (Marilyn Brammah) winning the other. The second session was another great turnout with Peter Reeves, the winner of group 1 and Lynne Grindlay winning group 2. Well done guys. These games are for ALL abilities so there is no excuse not to come along a give it a go. So, if you are interested, just turn up for an afternoon of friendly fun, banter and tea and biscuits. October’s dates are Wednesday 9th and Wednesday the 23rd from 2.00pm until 4.00pm at Ullesthorpe Village Hall. See you there. Roy and Barbara READING GROUP Co-ordinator: Linda Patton Tel: 556996 "Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont" by Elizabeth Taylor was the book under discussion at the September meeting and we all enjoyed reading

Page 4: NEWSLETTER - u3asites.org.uk · We started with the Temptations singing ‘My girl’, followed by ‘Under the table’, a poignant story sung by Daniel Cainer, a Jewish singer/songwriter

it. Although the main subjects were loneliness, old age and approaching death, there was no sentimentality in the descriptions of the characters or their situations. Mrs Palfrey would give herself a stern talking-to if she started to pity herself. The story tells of a group of old people who lived a genteel life in a hotel in London. They sat at separate tables to eat and were anxious to portray their situations as better than they were, which led Mrs Palfrey to having to pass off a young man who helped when she fell in the road outside his flat as her grandson. He stood in for the errant grandson who failed to visit enjoying the subterfuge whilst using her as good material for a novel he was writing entitled "They Were Not Allowed to Die There". We would definitely recommend this book. At our November meeting we will discuss "Small Island" by Andrea Levy. You are very welcome to join us for a most enjoyable morning with a lovely group of readers. Linda WHIST GROUP Co-ordinator: Glenys Peverley Tel: 553614 Our next session is on Thursday, November 4th at 7:00pm in Bitteswell village hall. We would be happy for new members to join us, as “the more the merrier”. Please contact me if you are interested. Glenys QUIZ GROUP Co-ordinator Sue Jones Tel: 556192 September seems to be the month for grandparents to take their annual holiday and our numbers were rather depleted at our quiz afternoon. Gordon was our quizmaster and I inwardly groaned when a round of questions about aeroplanes came up. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how many answers I knew. For once!! It seemed like a long time since we last met in Bitteswell. August’s trip to Lincoln was thoroughly enjoyed by all who went. We resumed our discussions about Henry VIII & his wives. Various titbits of information had been researched, some far too indelicate for this publication! We considered whether Henry had loved the six consorts of his reign. The jury is still out! The precarious nature of being in favour with the king was considered, not only from the female standpoint but also from that of the various officers of state, Wolsey, More & Thomas Cromwell. Thomas More’s “No Place”, Utopia gave us food for thought but we felt we were no closer to it now than then. A lively tea break, with cake to fuel it, was followed by a canter through, “Divorced, beheaded, died. divorced, beheaded, survived.” The six wives in a nutshell! For our October meeting we agreed to look at the many other aspects of Henry’s reign. Culture, the navy, food, his endowments, dissolution of the monasteries & anything else anyone has a fancy to investigate. Who knows what other interesting titbits will emerge. You will just have to join us in Bitteswell village hall on the 28th of October at 2.15 to find out. There will be cake! Lynne PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP Co-ordinator: Alan Shean Tel 283512 At our September meeting we were taking portraits. Just to show how trendy we are, we started with selfies on our phones. The resulting fat faces and big noses were even less flattering than the original subjects. We had to agree that the popularity of this technique is quite baffling. We looked at how different lenses and different distances from the sitter significantly affect the

results and considered how just using natural light in different positions changes the mood of the photo. We also spent time taking portraits in the natural environment. Details of our November meeting will be available nearer the date. Alan Shean HANDICRAFTS GROUP Co-ordinator Glenys Peverley Tel: 553614 We welcomed a new member to our group and spent a pleasant afternoon admiring the felt work being done by Sue and the lovely quilts being made for Pat's “grandbabies” expected later in the year. The rest of us were knitting for various charities. We will next meet on Monday, October 21st at Glenys’ at 7 Magnolia Drive at 2:00pm. Please contact me if you would like to join us, as we would welcome new members. Glenys SCRABBLE Co-ordinator: Glenys Peverley Tel: 553614 We had two “firsts” in September; June won a game for the first time and scored sixty six in one go, and Brenda won both her games, even beating Jill, although by only one point! Congratulations to both of them. We next meet on Wednesday, October 16th at 2:30pm at Brenda's home Radbroke, Ashby Lane, Bitteswell. Any new members would be welcome, so contact me if you wish to join us. Glenys PLAY READING Co-ordinator: Glenys Peverley Tel: 553614 We started “All in Good Time”, a northern comedy, but we need to finish it on Wednesday 11th October at 10:00am at Ann Hayes' home in Bitteswell. Will the newlyweds finally get the peace they need to become a truly married couple?! If you're interested in joining us, please contact me. Glenys

June JAZZ GROUP Coordinator Graham Ruff -Tel: 556985 This month's meeting was at Jim Davey's, with reduced numbers due to illness. As always at these meetings, we played a very varied selection of jazz and swing from early Dixieland jazz right through to ultra-modern artists. In addition to putting the world right during our tea break, we managed to listen to a dozen different tracks from performers such as Chris Barber, Sarah Vaughn, Oscar Peterson, Art Blakey, Ted Heath (the musician, not the politician) and Dizzy Gillespie. The next meeting is on 22nd October at Graham and Nohline's. Why not come and join us? All you need is an interest in jazz in one or more of its many forms and you will be in good company. Glenys Both Parties were full this month, which shows that summer is coming to an end. Lyn and Derek were, as always, their very generous and welcoming hosts as we filled their drive with our cars and their house with our personalities. Conversation never faltered as we discussed various topics, some serious and others more flippant and amusing. Excellent food was demolished and alcohol disappeared as the evening progressed. Many thanks to Derek and Lyn for their hospitality. Next month we will be dining with Sue and Gordon or Pat Boot and on November 4th, the venues will be Graham and Nohline, Tel: 556985 and Sheila and Tony, Tel: 553910. Richard Whittington SINGLES DINING GROUP Co-ordinator: Brian Fowler Email: [email protected] Tel: 209336 Monthly lunch organisers vary On a beautifully warm September day eleven members of the group dined at the picturesque Foxton Locks Inn Restaurant. With a table that afforded a view of the canal there was a constantly moving scene of canal boats making their way into the flight of locks for which Foxton is renowned. Over the course of recent months, the group has visited some excellent eating-places and the Foxton Inn will rank highly in our memories at the end of the year. The service was excellent, and the menu choices catered for all tastes with none of us being disappointed. Then came some tough decisions…”what to order for dessert” and where shall we dine in October. These were

soon decided and an invitation is extended to anyone who would care to join us on Thursday October 17th at PESTO, formerly The Axe and Compass at Wolvey. Meeting at 12 noon to dine at 12-30. The sign up list will be at the October 8th Wycliffe Rooms meeting or please e-mail to Brian on [email protected]. LINE DANCING FOR BEGINNERS Co-ordinator: Carole Harrington Tel: 553438 We meet twice per month at the Pavilion on the Recreation Ground. New members are welcome. Carole ART APPRECIATION GROUP Co-ordinators: Rae Flowerday Tel. 556942 & Sue Woodhead Tel. 01455 558037 For the group’s most recent meeting we spent the morning enjoying a retrospective look at the work of the art critic Sister Wendy Beckett [1930-2018]. She came to prominence after her television debut in 1992 and is, perhaps, best known for her ‘Story of Painting’ series and the accompanying ‘doorstop’ book of the same name. What was particularly striking, apart from her encyclopaedic knowledge of art & artists was the boldness and lack of political correctness in the way that she made judgements about individual artists and paintings. The best that she could say for an important work by Stanley Spencer was that she liked the wallpaper and she sympathised with Goya’s task in trying to paint the Spanish royal family who she described as ‘dull, unintelligent & practically sub-normal’. Similarly, you will never look at Thomas Gainsborough’s portrait of Mr & Mrs Andrews the same again after seeing Sister Wendy, who describes it as a ‘comic masterpiece’, dissect its inner meaning. She characterises Gainsborough as ‘very naughty’ [shades of Monty Python here] in his depiction of Robert Andrews as a ‘yobbo, with a thick, unintelligent face’ who seemed to have embarked on a marriage made in hell. She really didn’t mince her words! The group took a lot away from the morning including a renewed appreciation for Sister Wendy’s contribution to art criticism [all her television work, for example was unscripted]. When interviewed, her ‘assertive humility’ did become rather grating, however. For our November meeting we will be looking at the work of Donna Carrington & Lisa Milroy Venue: 7, Dempsey Close Apologies to Sue W [Tel 558037]. John

GROUPS ONE AND TWO STROLLING Co-ordinator Group One: Gwenda Jones Tel: 556923 Mobile: 07986905319 Co-ordinator Group Two: John Lee Tel: 556923 Group One On an absolutely beautiful September morning, we all headed for Willoughby in Warwickshire. A lovely typically English village in the heart of the countryside with a Church sitting in an immaculate churchyard where we were very warmly welcomed to hear about the history of the village and the Church. Afterwards we made our way to the local Pub, The Rose Inn, for our lunch. Hopefully the weather will hold for our next stroll, which will be at Brinklow. We will meet at 10.45am. Gwenda Group Two On a glorious late summer day, 17 members of the ‘follow John Brigade’ assembled in the delightful village of Frankton in Warwickshire. When all were assembled in the pews of St. Nicholas Church and order was attained, John began his exposition on the history of the village. He confessed, however, that he had got lost en route to his recce of the village and had ended up with notes of an entirely different church from the one in which we were seated. Much laughter, then order restored as he spoke of the Church, the superb manor house and the life of Colonel George Biddulph, whose distinguished service in the British Army is commemorated in the beautiful east window of the Church. Colonel George was killed in the Indian Mutiny in 1857 along with countless soldiers from both sides. Some of the more adventurous then walked along the lane to visit the fishponds that date from the 15th century, originally supplying fresh fish to the manor. The mix of dwellings dating from the 18th century to modern day were passed as the group wended their way back uphill to the Friendly Inn which lived up to its name with good service and good food. Next month we will be visiting Willoughby in Warwickshire and will meet at 10.15 Brian

CANASTA GROUPS June Hartopp Tel: 553418

June Hartopp runs the joint Canasta groups for Wycliffe and Lutterworth U3A on the first Friday of the month 10:00 – 12:00 and third Wednesday 10.00-12.00. Please contact June if you are interested in joining. BIRD WATCHING GROUP Coordinator: Rita Nicholls Tel 557412 The weather forecast was showers and bright intervals so we went to Brandon Marsh. Lots of hides to shelter in but not too wet. Most of the summer birds have left but we did get a passage of martins leaving and good views of hobby. A few of the ducks were still in eclipse plumage but had arrived, including wigeon, shoveler and pintail. No waders as the water was too high. The small birds were keeping a low profile. We saw a total of 42 species, including kingfisher for some. We will go out again on October 25th. 09.30 from Rec car park with pack up as usual. Rita

LIVELY DISCUSSION GROUP Co-ordinators: Dianne and Brian Thorp Tel: 01455 209584 Our September meeting was held at the home of Theresa Phillips in Husbands Bosworth, 8 members were present, ready to discuss the vagaries of 'Space Exploration-is the vast expenditure justified'?!! Theresa introduced the subject, she had certainly done her homework, this topic had much to offer and before we knew it, we had reached the half way point and ready for tea or coffee and delicious Lemon Drizzle cake or Eccles cakes. The second half was again commenced by Theresa. At this point we thought about the benefits of space exploration, the many advantages that we now have due to the wide range of products we now enjoy, it seemed that the last 50 years has improved the lives of many people. Taken

overall, the consensus was that 'Yes, the vast expenditure was justified' in spite of everything. Our next meeting is on Thursday October 17th at the home of Brian and Dianne Thorp at 2.15pm, the topic is 'Difficulty in all its aspects' set by Brian and he will give out the explanations separately. Please notify Brian of your intention to attend. Dianne Thorp 1st WEDNESDAY WALKING GROUP Joint Co-ordinators:-Peter and Irene Moore. Tel:- 01455 552594.email:- [email protected] Next Walk. We would encourage car sharing if at all possible for this walk. Start Point and Time - Manor Farm, Elkington Postcode NN6 6NH. No toilets. Depart at 10.00am.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON CAR PARKING ARRANGEMENTS

Due to limited parking around the start, we have arranged, with the kind permission of the owners of Manor Farm, ON A STRICTLY ONE-OFF BASIS, to park on hardstanding at the front of their house. Please can you NOT park on the grass and be as respectful as you can for their privacy. Also, please can you not leave any litter.

Page 9: NEWSLETTER - u3asites.org.uk · We started with the Temptations singing ‘My girl’, followed by ‘Under the table’, a poignant story sung by Daniel Cainer, a Jewish singer/songwriter

Directions to Start – Head for Swinford, then Stanford, Clay Cotton and onto Yelvertoft. In Yelvertoft, take the left hand turning onto Elkington Road (the signpost for Elkington is discretely sited on the offside of the road). Follow this road, which shortly becomes single track for about 1.75 miles when you will cross a (weak) narrow canal bridge. About 300 yards after the bridge, you will reach a road junction. Turn right (there is a grass triangle with a tree in the middle) and then right into Manor Farm. Go past the first house and then the hardstanding for the parking is straight ahead of you. Route and Distance – This is a moderate walk (a little tougher than we normally do) along country footpaths, tracks and across fields. The route is undulating with about 440ft of ascent. The first half of the walk follows the Jurassic Way and very quickly starts to climb Honey Hill. If it is a clear day, the views are great. We will stop at Winwick and then head back across fields and then a well-defined track which eventually becomes a lane. The distance is just over 5 miles and there are 2 stiles (very easy to cross, low and very firm). September Walk 13 walkers and 2 dogs set off on a cloudy and breezy morning from the Bell Inn in Husbands Bosworth along tracks and fields towards Mowsley Hills. Just before the hill towards Mowsley, we took a right turn along a quiet road and joined the canal towpath where we stopped for refreshments. We then continued along the towpath arriving back through Husbands Bosworth to the Bell Inn. There were no stiles and the length of the walk was 5 miles. Peter Williamson 4th WEDNESDAY WALKING GROUP Co-ordinators: - Sue and Peter Creeden Tel: 01455 557888 September 2019 Walk Report The very wet early morning rain must have deterred some from participating in this walk, as there were only 11 starters. Fortunately, it had stopped by the time they set off. Starting from The White Horse at Broughton Astley they headed off around the village before entering the fields at the back of Charlie Brown`s Garden Centre. Not quite reaching Dunton Bassett, having crossed an extremely muddy ploughed field, they turned to walk to

Stemborough Mill. They then joined the lane towards Leire leaving it half way down to walk along footpaths around the back of the village. Reaching the Dunton Road they walked up the hill to St Peter`s church where they stopped for a break. They then set off down Main Street taking a small detour via Back Lane to join Broughton Lane. Passing under the old railway bridge, they walked along the road for a couple of hundred yards before taking a footpath back to Broughton. On the map, it looks quite straightforward but it does wiggle a bit and there is ample opportunity to lose your way. But they didn`t. Peter Creeden

Next walk Wednesday 23rd October 2019 Walk Organisers: - Tony Allen Tel: 01455 552087 mob 07770 580 828 Paul Butler Tel: 01455 699437 Meeting Point and Time:- Coventry Road Recreation Ground at 9.15am to leave at 9.20am Start Point and Time: The Bell Inn, Gumley, LE16 7RU. Toilets available. Walk starts at 10.00 am. Directions to the Start:- Heading towards Mkt Harborough (the shorter route for daredevils follows the narrow lane 1st left after Theddingworth) take the 1st left in Lubbenham signposted Foxton, NOT Gumley. After 1.5 miles, turn left at the T-junction and immediately left again for 1.5 miles, passing Foxton Locks and taking care round the final killer S bend. There is limited parking on the Bell Inn apron, otherwise please park considerately on Gumley’s wide main road. Return mileage 27.2 miles. Walk Route and Distance:-. A scenic 4.7-mile walk of 2 1/4 hours incl break following a figure 8 between the Domesday villages of Gumley and Laughton. Meadows, 2+ arables, a short minor road and 5 stiles. All foliage free thanks to our leaders. Due to pressure of recce time, this is a repeat of the Aug 2017 walk. With far-reaching views ever evident, the walk heads South downhill through meadows and crosses a brook to swing SW along a bridle way and emerges opposite refurbished Gumley Lodge. Walking parallel to the drive we cross

right into sheep meadows and continue SW uphill, constantly looking around at the views, before emerging on the minor road to Laughton. Heading into the eclectic conservation village with its many thatched roofs, we take our break at the 13th century St Luke’s church (in Aug 2017 this was open). Our return trip to Gumley retraces the road we took in, but swings left on a bridle way through meadows with views right down to Gumley Lodge. There is a short steep final climb up to Gumley, which should set you up for a drink at the Bell Inn. However, for the gannets among us, host Richard Cross still offers 1 or 2 courses for £5.95 or £6.95. We recommend the Ham & Egg or Fish & Peas (Mushy/Garden), and Chips. Or you could just sit and watch.

Lunch Arrangements:- Pre-order lunch (details as above).
