Dear Reader

We are currently arranging

fundraising events in the village; all

proceeds will be put towards the

Festive lighting arrangements for

the Village. If you have any

experience in fundraising, have an

interest or have spare time in

assisting the Committee with their

work.

VE Day arrangements are also being discussed– The 8th May 2020, represents an important milestone in the history of our communities, our nation, and indeed the world. The 8th May 1945 was the day, 75 years ago, that peace broke out and brought an end to nearly six years of war and carnage. We cannot therefore, let this day pass without reflecting on the enormous sacrifice, courage and sheer determination of the people from all walks of life, from so many local communities, who saw us through this dark and frightening period. Regards

Those Armed Forces from many countries who gave their lives for us all, and those who returned home injured in body, mind and spirit. The hard-working women and men who kept the factories, mines, shipyards and farms operating throughout the years of hardship and turmoil. The ARP wardens, those who toiled in the fields, the police officers, doctors, nurses, fireman, local defense volunteers and others who put their lives on hold to safeguard the home front. VE Day 75, which has been extended to cover the weekend of 8th – 10th May 2020, will be an international celebration of peace – a time to reflect, remember and pay tribute to those many millions who played such a vital role in achieving it. The celebrations will be held at Cave Caste Hotel with a whole weekend of activities for all. Further details to be published nearer the time Any assistance with any of these events is greatly appreciated Please feel free to register your interest with myself here at the Town Hall 42 Market Place, South Cave, HU15 2AT: 01430 421044

The South Cave Crime Awareness Network is a Facebook group that

uses social media as a tool to stimulate security awareness within the

village, by providing a system to allow a smooth and speedy passage of

information. Raising awareness of a potential threat will help to

prevent complacency, whilst encouraging members of the community

to be proactive in deterring crime. To join the group please create a

Facebook account and then search for The South Cave Crime

Awareness Network. All information and data contained within this

newsletter is provided by the group admin.

Crime Statistics

The Parish council newsletter will regularly provide a summary of

criminal activity focusing specifically on the South Cave area. The police

will aim to update crime statistics before the last working day of each

month and this update will map incidents of the previous month. For

example, an incident of crime or anti-social behaviour reported to the

police on 10th January will be published on the website on or before the

last working day of February. In reality, updates are not usually

published until the middle of the following month, for example the

second or third week of March.

The table below provides a summary of the frequency of crimes in

South Cave that have been reported to the police since January 2019,

for a more comprehensive list please visit: www.crime-statistics.co.uk.

police website: www.police.uk/humberside/31/crime/

How to report a crime to the Police.

You can report a crime in several ways:

If it’s an emergency and the crime is still taking place, call 999 and ask

for the police.

If it’s not an emergency, do not call 999.

This doesn’t mean the crime is not important, it just helps the police to

make the best use of their resources. For non-emergency calls please

use 101.

You can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 if you wish to remain

anonymous.

How to report a Fraud.

ActionFraud is the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cyber

crime that you should contact if you have been scammed, defrauded or

experienced cybercrime. You can contact ActionFraud any time of the

day or night using their online fraud reporting tool or by calling 0300

123 2040.

How to receive real-time alerts from the police.

My Community Alert is a free messaging system operated by

Humberside Police, Humberside Fire & Rescue Service, and Humberside

Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner, giving you live information

about incidents happening in your area. You can choose how you

receive messages, by either phone or email, how often you want to

hear from them and about the issues that matter to you. To sign up,

please visit www.mycommunityalert.co.uk.

How to become involved in crime prevention schemes. Community Speed Watch Friday 2nd August saw the launch of the Humberside

wide Community Speed Watch in the East Riding,

with a team of trained volunteers taking to the

roadside to monitor the speed of traffic on the Main

Street in Bubwith. The Police & Crime

Commissioner, who is keen to enable residents to

be pro-active in their communities, has funded the

scheme. Volunteers who take part will receive

instruction by an approved Police trainer in the use of a speed

detection devise.

Trained volunteers will record the registration numbers of vehicles

travelling in excess of the speed limit. Once they report their findings to

the Community Speed Watch Coordinator at Humberside Police, a

series of warning letters are issued to the registered keeper of that

vehicle, culminating in a letter being hand delivered by a Police officer

and the possibility of the offending vehicles details being added to a

database for future enforcement by the Police.

For more information, contact the Community Speed Watch Co-

ordinator, Wayne Goodwin by emailing

[email protected].

Neighbourhood Watch

The Neighbourhood Watch scheme is the largest voluntary movement

in England and Wales with around 173,000 coordinators covering 3.8

million households. It’s a partnership intended to bring people together

to make their communities safer and involves the police, Community

Safety departments of local authorities, other voluntary organisations

and individuals and families who ostensibly want to make their

neighbourhoods better places to live. It aims to help people protect

themselves and their properties and to reduce the fear of crime by

means of improved home security, greater vigilance, accurate reporting

of suspicious incidents to the police and by fostering a community

spirit.

To find out where the Neighbourhood Watch groups are in your area,

or to find out how to set up a new group please visit the East Riding of

Yorkshire website at:

King George V Playing field - The newly installed Pirate Ship at King George V Playing field has sadly been subject to vandalism. The damage caused to the adornments of the ship were removed and broken. Replacement parts have been ordered at a cost to the Parish Council. It is rare incidents of the kind occur within the village and we are hoping this is an isolated incident. Please be vigilant and report any vandalism both to the police on 101 and to the Clerk at the Town Hall. The Parish Council will be looking at further projects for the installation of play equipment in King George V Playing field in the coming months and are committed in enhancing open spaces in order to encourage outdoor fitness and play. Playpark – You may be aware the trees within the Playpark have recently been subject to some maintenance works. Whilst works within the Playpark are completed, the park must be temporarily closed. The Parish Council apologises for any inconvenience caused. Residents are encouraged to report any faulty equipment to the Clerk at the Town Hall on 01430 421044

The Playpark has recently been subject to Human Excretion being discharged on the site. This behavior affects all residents within the community and I am sure you will be as disappointed as the Parish Council with this kind of act. The Parish Councilors are individuals volunteering their time to help enhance the village and retain its beauty and should not be in a position to take their time to remove this type of detritus. Any information regarding the incident would be very much appreciated and can be reported to the Clerk at the Town Hall. Risby Homes Development, Water Lane - The Parish Council are in the process of making arrangements for Open Space on the site. Part of the space will be held on a lease to the Parish Council; the lease stopulates there is to be no installation of play equipment on the site. The lower section of space is to be handed over to the Parish Council within the s106 agreement, the Parish Council may in future consider the installation of minimal play equipment to the site, however primarily the area will be Open Space, accessible via a installed pathway with gated access.

I Don’t own a dog

Where am I going with this?

Do you know that the Parish Council maintains a children’s play park in

the village? If you are unaware of it, you can find it on the hillside at

the side of the school. It is equipped with swings, roundabouts, slides,

a zip wire and picnic tables, etc. The play park is generally well used

and appreciated by a lot of parents and small children (and some older

children who seem to find it a suitable place to hang out occasionally).

Now, let me explain why I don’t own a dog. I was brought up in South

Yorkshire by parents who encouraged me to have a responsible

attitude to animals If I had a pet, I had to care for it properly and I can

remember for example spending hours collecting dandelions to feed

my rabbits. If I had owned a dog I know it would have been my

responsibility to take it for walks (come rain or shine) and make sure all

of its other needs were attended to. I think I saw this as an onerous

responsibility, which I was not keen to take on. Of course I may also

have been influenced by once being chased by a barking dog with no

apparent owner and it was a long time before I felt comfortable around

dogs after that.

I subsequently grew up and was fortunate enough to be able to work

with farm animals and even owned some goats and horses, to say

nothing of assisting vets in Africa carrying out health checks on Big Cats

and Hunting Dogs. One of the things I had no knowledge of in those far

off days was Toxocara. This I now know is a parasite which can be

found in what is euphemistically called dog poo.

Page 11: NEWSLETTER VOLUME 9. ISSUE 2 - South Cave · NEWSLETTER VOLUME 9. ISSUE 2 Volume 9, Issue 2. 2 | P a g e Dear Reader We are currently arranging fundraising events in the village;

11 | P a g e

As if ‘dog poo’ is not unpleasant enough when you have trodden in it,

the really nasty thing about it is that it carries Toxocara and this can

cause blindness in children who come into contact with ‘dog poo’.

It is the danger to children from Toxocara that is the main reason why

dogs are banned from designated children’s playing areas such as

school playing fields and local authority owned play parks. If you are or

have been a parent you would presumably not want your children

playing in an area where dog poo is present and where inquisitive little

fingers can get at it. For this reason the play park in the village is a No

Go area for dogs and there is a very large notice on the gate informing

any visitor of this fact.

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE A DOG INTO THE CHILDRENS PLAY

AREA.

Operation Lifestyle 2019 #pickuppromise:

We are team #pickuppromise, a group of five 10 year olds from South

Cave primary school. Our Lifestyle project is rubbish, or to be more

precise reducing rubbish!

Environmental issues are in the news a lot and we thought we’d focus

on picking up litter. Litter is a problem for wildlife, especially in our

rivers and oceans. Picking up 3 items of litter a day is a small thing for

one person to do but together, if lots of people do this we can make a

BIG difference.

Over our summer holidays, we have been spreading the word of this

challenge, asking people to join us in picking up at least 3 pieces of

litter a day wherever they are in the world, recycling or putting it in a

bin and spreading the word again. We hope you’ve seen some of our

posters around the village. On our regular walks, we have noticed a

decrease in the amount of litter spotted yet there are still pockets of

litter hotspots around.

Our launch event at Hessle Foreshore raised awareness of our

#pickuppromise campaign. We collected 9 bags of litter from this area

before it went into our estuary and we raised £256.28 from a bake sale

for Humber Rescue’s new lifesaving boat. We are hoping to add to this

total for such a good cause with a stall at the South Cave Show and our

forthcoming sponsored team triathlon. Thank you to everyone who

has supported us!

Please follow us on Twitter @pickuppromise1.

Together we can make a difference.

CELEBRATING 90 YEARS OF SOUTH CAVE WI

South Cave Women’s Institute was formed in November 1929

and it wasn’t long before a permanent home was needed. This

came in the form of an obsolete Army Hut originally bought in

1930 with a small mortgage and help from the community of

South Cave, including a small piece of land on Church Street

donated by the owners of Cave Castle at that time.

From humble beginnings, the now renamed “WI Hall” has been

transformed from a simple wooden hut into a venue prized by

all those within the village. Over the last 90 years it has

received a brick outer shell, central heating, double glazing, and

only a couple of years ago a new roof. All this work was paid

for fund raising and donations and plans for a new kitchen are

in hand.

The Hall is in continuous use by, not only the WI but also

various clubs, such as line dancing, yoga etc and is hired out for

parties and celebrations. WI Spring and Autumn Quizzes are

extremely popular with the village community, as are the

tombola and cake stalls at the Sports Pavilion Beer Fest each

year.

South Cave WI has a lively and varied programme including

wine tasting, an evening of magic, pottery with tea and cake

and Morris dancing to name but a few. The East Yorkshire

Federation events such as archery, garden centre visits, gliding

and public affairs meetings are also well supported.

In order to celebrate this wonderful achievement of 90 years,

the Members recently enjoyed an afternoon tea at Tickton

Grange. Those shown below are from left to right – Joan

Robertson, Vicky Dewar, Jean Bibby, Sandra Allison and Carol

Chadwick. Also, Christine Snowdon, member of the East

Yorkshire Federation Board of Trustees, was invited to enjoy

the celebration.

Further to the item in the last Parish Newsletter : South Cave’s Daniel

James joined Manchester United this summer. As of Saturday 31st

August he’d already scored three goals in his first four Premier League

matches for his new club, including scoring on his debut at Old Trafford

against Chelsea - coming on as a substitute in the 74 minute and scoring

after seven minutes ! We continue to wish him well for a continued

successful season and career.

MIRES BECK NURSERY

We are informed that many people in the community do not

know about our amazing charity nestled within the rural

landscape of North Cave. We have actually been here for 30

years and this year into next we are celebrating 25 years as a

registered charity.

Our wonderful award winning horticultural nursery and

conservation site, offers adults with learning difficulties the

opportunity to gain work experience and receive the benefits

of spending time outdoors in nature, where we offer training

and community in a safe and friendly environment.

We have over 100 service users at our facility working with

quality Perennials, wildflowers, herbs and trees and some

people are active in estates management work, gardening and

growing vegetables, which our cooked by our food preparation

learning team in our main kitchen. We are in the midst of

expansion plans to deliver in a new building for adults with

more profound difficulties to offer new places for those

isolated with their condition. The scheme is being designed by

local architects Ral Green and we will be reaching out to the

community to help us with this goal over the coming months.

As part of your role you will be responsible for deciding when it is safe to stop traffic, using the crossing patrol sign, to give clear signals to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. You may also have some involvement in road safety training delivered to school children.

This is a rewarding and respected role within the community that is appreciated by parents, children and road users. The weekly hours range between 4 - 8 hours which makes this an attractive opportunity for retirees, part time workers, students and self-employed people as it can fit in around other commitments. Applications are welcome from everyone.

You will need knowledge of the Highway Code but you will be provided with full training. You will also be provided with all the equipment required to carry out the role.
