Yorkson News

Langley Christmas Bureau (last time repeat)

If you are having trouble dealing with the financial stress of the coming holiday season, you may want to contact the Langley Christmas Bureau. It is open to residents of the City or Township of Langley, have children from newborn to Gr. 12, and who have not applied for food hampers or assistance from other agencies. You must apply in person at 19638 Fraser Hwy in Langley from 10:00 – 4:00 weekdays or 10:00 – 2:00 on Saturdays. They are accepting applications now until Dec. 16th. Each client receives a gift certificate for each child, a food hamper or voucher, and a large and small gift as well as a book for each child.

Christmas Families

Next week we’ll be setting up our Christmas giving trees in the front foyer. We are short one artificial tree. If you have one that we could use until Dec. 12th, please contact Mrs. Paton at [email protected].

Lost and Found Treasures

Want to see the latest in fashion? Designer shoes, tees and hats? Just have a look at our Lost and Found. It truly is amazing what students leave behind. One more week and we’ll send it to Goodwill.

Lip Synch a Smash Hit

Our Me to We club held an outstanding Lip Synch contest this week. Although Ms. Pudlas and Mr. Smithson truly brought the house down with their version of “Love is an Open Door”, our students were superb on their own. Congratulations to finalists Peter D., Ashley T. and Nicole H. The winner was the ‘Free the Children’ charity as our Me to We group raised over $150. Congratulations to all of our participants.

Hot Chocolate

Boy it’s cold! What we need is a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Well… a fundraiser for charity is being held next Wed. and Thurs. at recess and lunch. Hot chocolate will be sold for $1.

Movember (last repeat!)

Mr. Carlyle, Mr. Creelman, Mr. Everson, Mr. Frisse, or Mr. Smithson are ready to have their faces shaved for cancer research. Tickets are going on sale next week – really this time! Tickets are $1 each or 3 for $2, or 10 for $5. Students simply put their name on the ticket, and if their ticket gets drawn on Nov. 30th, they get to shave their own moustache design into the facial hair of one of the male staff mentioned above.

Sports / Clubs / Activities They Shoot! They Score(keep!) We know we have great kids at Yorkson, but sometimes even they go above and beyond. This week saw the Gr. 6 and Gr. 7 boys and girls Walnut Grove volleyball finals in our gyms. Of course you need scorekeepers for all those games and we’d like to recognize the following students: Kristina S. and Jenelle F. (they did almost all the league games too!), Steven C., Ava R., Madison N., Kaiden S., Emma O., and Emily G. Some friends got their rubber arms twisted to join the crew above and we’d like to thank them too: Kane B., Gurmo G., Zack D., and Bahar H. Wrestling Underway

Mr. Kroeker and Mr. Josephson are coaching our wrestling team which consists of both boys and girls from grades 6 to 8. Their first meet is in December. Watch here for the results.

November 17, 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The BC Ministry of Education has revised (K-9) and is revising (grades 10-12) the provincial

curriculum as a response to the rapidly changing world that students are entering. The Ministry

of Education consulted with experts in the field, including the BC Teachers’ Federation to

develop curriculum designed to best meet the needs of students and prepare them for the

future.

In order to implement these changes, the minimum number of instructional hours has been

reduced by two days for the current 2015-2016 school year. The new non-instructional time will

be used for the purpose of enabling teachers to participate in discussions and activities related

to implementation of the new BC curriculum. In addition to this year, the minimum number of

instructional hours for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years will be reduced by one day

each for the same purpose.

As current 2015-2016 District calendars have already been approved by the Langley Board of

Education, the District calendar must now be amended by the Board to accommodate this

subsequent change. The proposed two days of non-instructional time, subject to Board

approval, are Friday, January 15, 2016 and Monday, April 18, 2016. While these dates are

subject to final Board approval, they are being provided to parents/guardians so that parents/

guardians may begin to plan accordingly.

The Langley Board of Education meets Tuesday, December 8, 2015 and the motion to amend

the calendar for 2015-2016 will be on the agenda as part of the Regular Meeting that starts at

7pm. Board of Education meetings are held in the School Board Office, 4875 222 Street,

Langley.

Staffs at schools across the District have already been diligently working at supporting this

curricular change. More information for parents can be found on the District’s website -

https://www.sd35.bc.ca/students-parents/bcs-new-curriculum/ or through your school’s

teachers and administration.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Hoffman
