Assembly
A big thank you to Mrs Spurgeon and her Year 1
class for presenting the last assembly. It was an
excellent display of talent!
Next Friday’s assembly will be hosted by Mrs
Donaldson’s Year 2’s from Room 32. we look
forward to all family and friends attending.
K—PP Yakamia Book Lovers Club
This is a fantastic new initiative generously
funded by Communities for Children. Each month
parents, pre kindy children and teachers meet
over a cup of tea and cake to discuss and
participate in learning activities around a picture
book. After a very convivial session we discuss
our new book and parents and children take home
a grab bag of great activities to try at home. So
far we have discussed Jackie French’s Diary of a
Wombat, Julia Donaldson’s Room on a Broom and
Nick Bland’s Runaway Hug.
Parents are also issued with a booklovers card
that allows them to purchase the books at a
greatly discounted price from Paperbark Book
Store. Thank you to Miss Raelene Scott for
initiating, organising and putting together the
activity packs. This is a great school—community
partnership. If you are interested and have a pre
kindy child please contact Miss Scott or Mrs
Height on 9841 7533.
Year Six Writing History
This term Room 14 Yr 6 students have been
involved in an exciting community History /
Literacy project with the aim of connecting them
to their place in our history rich community -
Albany.
Over the term our students will engage in three
one hour interactive teaching / learning sessions
with Albany author Dianne Wolfer and Sue
Smith, the Local Historian Coordinator of the
Albany Library History Collection. Parents have
also been invited to participate.
The theme of the project is A Journey through
the Past using Snapshots of Albany. Students
visited the Albany Library and Di and Sue have
made reciprocal visits to the school introducing
students to historical photos of Albany events and
places and showing them how to use the photos to
write an historical narrative.
The project will conclude at the Albany Library at
5.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 20 November with a
launch ceremony where students will present
their written narratives to the public. All are
welcome to the launch. Ultimately student work,
with videos, will be posted onto the Albany City
Library website, Di Wolfer’s Blog and archived at
Yakamia Primary School library. Many thanks to
Mr Mackenzie (Class Teacher), Mr Kosovich
(Librarian), Sue Smith and Di Wolfer for making
this project so interesting and dynamic. Well done
to all.
Student Historical Narrative So Far
Back From War
I could hear the cries of joy as our boat neared
land. I, John Campbell Ross had survived the
First World War and was to be reunited with my
wife Grace and two children Amy and Maxwell. I
could see them waving like mad at me. I was so
excited to see them. But, I felt so bad, seeing
Edward’s wife and son looking at the boat, trying
to find him. Unfortunately, Edward died rescuing
another. I gave them a meaningful look and
mouthed ‘so sorry’ to them. They saw me and
started slowly walking back to their house, both
shaking, as if it were freezing cold. To be
continued…..
This is just a small excerpt of Mia Shephard’s
historical narrative. It gets better!

Book Fairs…Two For One.
Dear Yakamia Primary School Families,
Our “Huge LIBRARY Book Fair” is on once again but the difference is …
when you buy one book you get another book free to the same value. For example if you buy
1 book for $15, you can then choose one or more additional books up to the value of $15 for
free.
This Book Fair is a reward for the highly successful Book Fair we operated early in the year
and, although no actual money is raised for the Library, it is extremely good value for
students and parents.
If you are thinking of rewarding your children for their effort at school, or at home, or even
thinking ahead for Christmas then this is a wonderful opportunity to purchase fiction and
non fiction literature at greatly reduced prices.
Dates: Thursday 7 November – Tuesday 12 November.
Times: 8:25 - 8:50 and 12:30 – 1:15 each day and for a short time
at the end of the school day.
Please remember that the first two days are for viewing only (Thursday and Friday) – this
will be arranged at school, and the last 2 days are for buying (Monday and Tuesday) – we
pack up the Book Fair at the end of Tuesday (12 November).
We’re looking forward to seeing ’YOU’ at the Library Book Fair.
“Our Book Fairs connect students to books they want to read.”
Thank you for encouraging your child to read. We appreciate your
support and look forward to seeing you at the Book Fair.
Would you like the newsletter emailed to you?
Send an email to
[email protected] or drop into the
office and we will add you to the email list.

Year 7 Scoliosis Information
Pamphlets on scoliosis are being sent home soon
and parents are asked to read them both and seek
assistance from a health professional if there are
any concerns .
Scoliosis is a condition where the spine is curved
sideways. It is more common in girls but boys can
also have this condition. It becomes noticeable in
early adolescence (9-13years) and parents are
asked to follow directions in the pamphlet to check
their child for this condition. If you find any of the
signs listed, get a re-check from your family
doctor, as treatment may be required.

VacSwim
Enrolments are now open for the 2013-2014
VacSwim Programs. Enrolments are online at
det.wa.edu.au /swimming. The brochures with the
information are being sent home with this
newsletter.
Road Safety Awareness
Please remember to obey all the traffic rules and
road signage when driving at all times. This is
especially important around school zones. The
local traffic police have been targeting our school
in the last few weeks and have asked us to
remind you not to turn into the top car park when
coming down Beaufort Road from North Road.
You need to continue on to the end of Beaufort
Road and turn around in the school car park or at
the end of the road to make the turn. They would
also like to remind everyone to actually stop at
the stop sign at the end of Edwards Street, not
coaster over if no cars are coming. The penalty for
disobeying the above is $150 and 3 demerit
points.
For Sale by Tender—2 x Seatainers
Situated on the school oval. Tender information
from the Registrar, phone 9841 7533. Tenders
close Friday, 22 November at 3.30pm. Highest or
any tender not necessarily accepted.

Attendance
Term 4 is a busy term for both the school and for families. It is important to know that even though it is a
busy time students still need to be regularly attending school. To highlight the importance of regular at-
tendance we include the following information.
Missing school adds up;
• if a child misses an average of five days a term (Years 1 to 10), they miss out on approximately one
year of school
• if a child misses one day a week of school (from Years 1 to 10), they will miss almost two years of
school
• if a child misses 1.5 days a week of school (from Years 1 to 10), they will miss almost three years
of school
• if a child misses two days a week of school (from Years 1 to 10), they will miss almost four years of
school
• if a child misses three days a week of school (from Years 1 to 10), they will miss almost six years of
school
• if a child misses five weeks a term (Years 1 to 10), they miss almost five years of school
Based on these statistics I’m sure that parents can see the massive effect this degree of absenteeism
would have on student learning.
CLIMBING DOME
Some Yakamia PS families may be familiar with a
climbing dome which was salvaged from the school prior
to the old school being demolished (if it hadn't been
removed at the time it would have been scrapped with
the rest of the building material), Tanya Russ has been
kindly storing it in her yard since. The intention was
that the dome would be reinstalled, however it has
sustained rust damage and has been deemed unsuitable
for a school setting. In September the P&C passed a
motion to donate the Dome to Albany City Kart Club who
expressed an interest in it. The P&C have discussed
allocating funds in early 2014 to replace the dome with
some other climbing/playground equipment, with a
senior school focus.

JUNIOR SPORTS DAY
Thank you to Michael from Coffee-To-Go who came to our
junior sports day this week. Michael was kind enough to
donate a portion of his profits from the day to P&C,
thanks Michael!
Huge thanks also to Ross and team for a fantastic day - a
huge amount of planning and work goes into these sports
days and he did a wonderful job. Just a quick reminder:
its not a given that P&C offer a morning tea/lunch stall
on these kind of days - its all volunteer dependant! If you
would like to be more involved in P&C, please do so - the
more the merrier!

The box in the hall is overflowing with lost property -
please check it regularly.

incredibly generous by offering us a great deal on the

initiative.
CANTEEN

into the canteen and see Charmaine.
If your child has a food allergy, please notify front

Charmaine is always looking for canteen helpers, please
