Underdale High School Newsletter Issue 3, Term 2 2018 Resilience Optimism Courage Knowledge Newsletter Issue 3, Term 2 2018 From our Acting Principal, Ms Lesley Holliday Thank you to the parents and students who attended the Report Collection and Interview night. We really appreciate your ongoing commitment and involvement in your child’s learning and willingness to work in partnership with us to support both the academic and wellbeing of our students. If you have concerns regarding your child’s progress then we encourage you to make contact with specific subject teachers via email, DayMap or the phone. Please be aware that in terms 2, 3 and 4 reports will be made available to students and their families on DAYMAP only on the last day of each term. If you do not have access to internet at home, your child will be able to print a copy of their report at school. We continue to seek your support in following school processes with regard to student absences and ensuring that students are attending school in the required school uniform. The STEM works continue to be a focus for our school community and at the beginning of the term students had access to the unisex toilets in the Courage corridor and more recently the counsellor’s area has been made available again. We look forward to next term when we are able to use the new rooms and facilities which will support innovation and creativity in our teaching and learning programs. The redesigned Resource Centre will also become a central hub for supporting students with their learning and promote inquiry and research. Despite the limited access to rooms over the last term it has been pleasing to note that there has been no disruption to teaching and learning programs. The year 9 students participated in NAPLAN in week 3 and the majority of students are to be commended for their high levels of engagement during this period. This year the Football Academy introduced a new initiative a Football camp for students participating in this specialist program. The camp was highly successful and students had the opportunity to be involved in a range of exciting learning experiences as well as match play. Our school community would like to extend our congratulations to Norie Hayama a 2017 year 12 graduate who has been awarded the University of Adelaide Principal’s scholarship. Health & Safety - Ban on Aerosol

Products

There is already a ban on deodorant sprays

and other aerosols, but some students are

continuing to bring them to school.

Pressurised aerosol products emit

unnecessary volatile organic chemicals and

produce a fine mist which is easily inhaled

and absorbed into the blood stream and

which can produce severe allergic

reactions, particularly for students with

asthma.

Students are asked to use pump sprays, roll

on deodorants and other safer products to

protect their own health and that of their

fellow students. As in the case for other

banned items, staff will confiscate any

aerosol products found in school and they

can then be collected from Reception at

the end of the week.

Please support us to ensure the health and

safety of our students.

Car parking around the school: Parents / Caregivers / Students,

Please be aware of the parking signage and line

marking in the streets that surround our school.

We have had a large number of complaints regarding

people receiving parking tickets from the council,

when dropping off /picking up their child/ren,

attending meetings etc.

Unfortunately, if you are stopping or parking illegally in

areas clearly marked with yellow lines and signage,

and receive any kind of fine, the school is unable to

assist you in disputing these fines as it is out of our

jurisdiction to do so.

To avoid receiving a fine, simply follow the signage

displayed.

Out the front of the school on Garden Terrace - on the

school side of the road - When you are facing the

school / sign:

To the right of the sign there is no parking permitted

between 8:00 - 9:00am and 2:30 - 4:00pm. In these

times, it is a passenger loading only zone (like kiss &

drop zone). You cannot stop, park and wait.

To the left of the sign is a loading zone only (for

delivery vehicles only) and a no standing zone. Both of

these zones mean No Parking at any time, as there is

no time stated.

Please be sure to abide by these signs in any

street surrounding the school to avoid

receiving a fine!

EALD News When Hoey left the school to

return home he shared that he

liked the rules of the school

because you don't have to have

a short haircut every month and

students can wear earrings. He

found that the students are fun

and funny and that the teachers

are very kind and polite. He also likes the way the

school starts later than his school back home and

finishes earlier. He liked the classroom sizes because

there are fewer students too. But mostly he liked the

friends he has come to know. He will miss us and I am

sure we will miss him.

CMI Apprentice Welcome and Graduation

Evening Last year CMI Toyota advertised 10 new apprentice

positions. 300 young people applied and Oscar

Stringer from Underdale High School, who was

engaged in our Cert I Automotive Programme at

Underdale High School, was successful in winning one

of these positions.

On the 10th of May, Mr Pappageorgiou and I had the

privilege of attending an apprentice welcome and

graduation evening at CMI Toyota. During this

ceremony the new and completing apprentices were

presented to the audience. Several were presented

with awards for their high levels of success.

Oscar was presented as one of the young apprentices

that represent the future for the company in

automotive.

Oscar’s pathway into CMI was as a direct result of his

involvement in our Automotive programme. He is one

of a long line of graduates of our automotive

programme to have made a successful transition into

the workplace and are now building a productive

career in the Automotive industry.

We wish him every success, Rob Portsch.

SA Refugee Week Poster Competition Congratulations to Year 10 students Jemma Manfre

and Tayla Gleeson who have been selected to have

their posters exhibited alongside 68 other chosen

posters in the SA Refugee Week Launch, which will be

taking place on the 18th of June. A great effort by

both students who created powerful and aesthetically

pleasing images.

Western Zone European Handball Carnival-

Week 11, Term 1

The mighty Underdale High have swept the pool at this

year’s Handball Championships, collecting all 3 titles on

a scorching autumn’s day.

The Senior Girls, Senior Boys and Junior Boys dominated

their matches against schools across the Western Zone,

epitomised by the Girls conceding only one goal

throughout the tournament!

The players were strongly supported by Angela Scriva,

Mulky Abdi and Charlie Mavros who rotated umpire

duties in the hot autumn sun.

All students represented the school in a respectful and

humble manner while collecting Underdale’s 7th title in

8 years (carnival was previously a mixed competition).

Mr Hilditch

Staff Uniform Day On Friday, some of our staff role modelled our

Underdale uniform. We encourage our students to wear

the uniform with pride!

Art Gallery Visits The majority of our Year 8 and Year 12 Visual Art

students visited the ‘Colours of Impressionism’

exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia which

features more than 65 masterpieces from the

renowned collection of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

Students were able to closely view, analyse and

express their opinions of these impressive works that

showcase the evolution of the impressionism art

movement. Students were inspired by the detailed

technique and the use of individual brush strokes of

colour. Practical activities in class enabled students

to apply their knowledge and practice

Impressionism painting techniques.

I found most of the paintings very interesting but the

one that stood out for me was ‘Water Lilies’ by

Claude Monet. - Jacob Klotz (Year 8)

The piece of artwork I liked most was by Paul

Signac. It was called “Le Chateau des

Papes” (place of the popes). I liked how it had lots

of neon colours and when I looked up really close I

saw dots but when I took a couple steps back it all

joined together. - Bethany Borelli (Year 8)

Football Camp Underdale High School hosted its inaugural Middle

School Football Academy camp at the Adelaide

Shores complex from May 14th to May 16th during

week 3 for all year 8/9 football academy students

and year 10 girls in the academy. The academy

stayed at the Adelaide Shores Caravan Park for the

two nights, while using The Adelaide Shores Football

Centre and Barratt Reserve for various activities.

Over the three days spent at Adelaide Shores, the

students took part in a range of sessions including:

Guest speaker from the FFSA talking about player

conduct & integrity on and off the football field.

Team building games run by Beyond the

Classroom

Small Sided internal matches

Friendly matches against Port Pirie and Henley

Fundamental skills training session and gameplay

session with football academy coaches and

former Adelaide United player, Cristiano

We would like to thank Port Pirie and Henley for their

involvement with our camp as well as the FFSA for

providing a guest speaker and Cristiano for his time

coaching our students.

We look forward to a bigger and better football

camp in 2019!

Knockout Sport Term 2 sees the start of various knockout sport

competitions for Underdale High School, a busy period

for our football and netball academies. For the 2018

Term 2/3 School Sport SA Knockout Sport competitions,

we have the following teams entered:

Year 8/9 Girls Knockout Football

Year 10 Boys Knockout Football

Open Girls Knockout Football

Year 8/9 Boys & Girls 5-a-side Football

Year 10 Girls Knockout Netball

So far this term, our open boys and girls futsal teams

have competed in the qualifying round to qualify for the

state finals during week 3. Our open girls team finished

second in the pool, meaning they will play in the state

finals in week 10. Unfortunately, our open boys teams

were eliminated after missing out on a top two finish on

goal difference!

On Thursday 24th May during week 4, our year 8/9 boys

and girls 5-a-side football teams competed in the

western zone carnival, to qualify for the state finals.

Underdale entered five boys teams and claimed 1st

place with a 5-1 win in the final as well as 3rd and 4th

place, while Underdale’s sole girls team finished first with

a 7-0 win in their final. These results mean Underdale will

have a boys and girls team in the State Finals later this

term!

Underdale’s open boys football team have progressed

to the second round of their competition against Henley

All other knockout games will soon be taking place over

the next few weeks, and we will keep you updated with
