What a lovely weekend of spring sunshine! A reminder that school finishes at normal time on Friday

and recommences on October 14, we hope you are looking forward to some quality family time over the

break. Children will need to wear hats in the playground on their return to school as we reinforce

sunsmart safety.

The Koru team are in final preparation mode for their production. A production like this is a great way

to celebrate not just the Arts (dance, drama, music) but a context for literacy, technology and other

areas of the curriculum. I would like to acknowledge all the teachers in the Koru team for their efforts

in putting on Wild Family.

Another big end-of-term celebration of learning is the intermediates Beyond 3000 documentary film

festival. Some of the documentaries will be shown at their assembly on Friday. Again, this is the

integration of many aspects of the curriculum and the key competencies – particularly connected with

the expectation that this is a team-based learning experience.

Health education consultation

We are seeking parent/whānau voice around the design and delivery of Health Education at our school.

We would appreciate if you could complete this survey by the end of the week about our draft Health

Delivery Statement, which should take no longer than five minutes. Thank you for your contribution.

Snell House Eco Day

On Wednesday the 25th of September, Snell house is running an Eco Day for the

whole school; this day is to raise awareness and to take action on environmental

issues. We encourage all students to wear some green, walk/bike to school on the

day (if possible) and to pack a rubbish-free and healthy lunch. Look out for our

posters around the school.

Talent Quest – week 4, term 4.

This competition is run within each team (Koru, Harakeke and Pohutukawa), with

judged performances in the hall at lunchtimes. Students might like to start planning their entries;

singing, dancing, musical items, drama, gymnastics, comedy - all are welcome!

We look forward to seeing you in and around the school over the next few days.

– Alison and Catherine.

Year 6 Service Trip

Last week 17 Year 6 students went on the service trip to Opotiki. The aim of this trip was to help a rural

community and to do some environmental work.

Day one we planted nearly 200 young trees in the dunes to help with erosion.

Day two we had an amazing trip to Whakaari (White Island). Being on an active volcano was amazing

and very smelly as there was so much sulphur in the air. We learnt a lot about volcanic rocks and lots of

hidden DANGERS.

Day three we learnt lots of stories about the kaitiaki (guardians) of the Kutarere marae and even got to

sleep in the whare nui! We had a great time meeting and playing with the kids from Kutarere school.

The service trip helped raise $2200 from our two fundraisers from school which was donated to the

Kutarere Marae. Thank you for all your help towards this. – Henry

Otago Math Problem-Solving 2019 The Otago Math Problem Challenge is a mathematics problem-solving competition aimed primarily at children in years 6, 7 and 8. It has been offered to schools throughout New Zealand for the past 28 years. Almost one million New Zealand children have participated in the competition over the years. This year we had 53 students take part.

Over a few months, children participating in the competition receive five problem sheets each with a target of five questions to answer in 30 minutes. To be successful students needed logical thought and a repertoire of problem solving strategies.

An extra special congratulations to those who received an Excellence award:

Ben, Valerie, Kate, Neo, Yahya and Boidehi

Year 7 and Year 8 children who do particularly well in Problem Challenge during the year are invited to enter a final multi-choice competition in late October. Good luck to Kate and Neo who are through to the Final Challenge – date and details to follow.

Activities will be a combination of both crafts and outings: Games Arcade, Movies, Art Gallery, Rock Climbing, Jump, Ten Pin Bowling and more. See the school website for more information. Chess Club

Playing chess in school helps students achieve many learning outcomes faster and more effectively. Put simply, chess makes kids smarter. Chess enables all students to shine and develop intellectually in a way they really enjoy. Playing chess develops self-confidence, concentration and problem-solving skills.

We are pleased to continue the Chess Coaching Programme at our school and look forward to bringing the excitement, competition and educational benefits of chess to your children.

Each session starts with a formal lesson; all players will learn a new strategy, idea or skill each week. Then they put those skills into practice with activities and games. All games are monitored and supervised by the coach who provides individual feedback along the way. Throughout the programme, we reward kids that do well and encourage and support kids that are struggling. At completion of the programme we recognise each child with a certificate based on their performance.

Sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 12:40pm to 1:30pm in Room 11 starting Wed 16 October 2019. The last session will be held on 11 December 2019. This is a full 9-week program. The fee for the term is $110/student.
