Zagreb–ThecapitalofthecravatThe Croatian light calvary within the French Royal Army was known for great heroism and military skills throughout the thirty year war in the 17th century (1618-48) , but also stood out with a ‘fashion’ detail– a picturesque scarf tied around their necks. This scarf ties in a knot was named after the ethnic name of the Croats (old German Krabatten or old French Cravattes) – cravat. In 1664. a Croatian regiment called Royal Cravattes was formed in the units of the French Royal Army. Almost four centuries later, in the old part of Zagreb, tourists can witness the changing of the guards of the Royal Cravattes, a unit inspired by the famous Croatian historical regiment. Every changing of the guards starts with an attractive ceremony of preparation of the guards and arms inspection. 12 soldiers participate in the ceremony and display their scarfs, later known as cravats worn four hundred years ago. The guards are located at three attractive tourist locations – at St. Mark’s Square, Ban Josip Jelačić Square and at the statue of Our Lady at Kaptol. With this project Zagreb aims to promote itself as the capital of the cravat, with the wish that this extraordinary cultural and historical value becomes an attraction for all visitors of the Croatian capital, the homeland of the cravat.

Anyone who wishes to experience the town of Dioklecian from a completely different perspective should take a yellow sea taxi and enjoy the beauties of this most beautiful city in the world, as called by the people of Split, from ‘the sea’. This is the new offer that enables tourists to get to know this old Dalmatian city through a half an hour ride in the taxi, accompanied by a tour guide. The sea taxi can hold 12 people and it is ideal for tourists that arrive by aeroplanes to the city’s airport because it will get them to the waterfront of Split in about 15 minutes, without them having to experience the rush hour traffic of the town’s centre. The taxi is also available to those who want to see some of the beautiful islands in the waters around Split.

Zagreb and its history can recently be experienced by its many visitors by riding a tour bus through the city streets. Instead of having the usual tour guide with a microphone, tourists can use the headphones provided, through which they can experience the tour of the city with the routes and specific landmarks explained in seven languages. The open top bus offers a shorter and a longer route. The ride on the shorter ‘red route’ lasts one hour, through the Upper and Lower town, while the longer ‘green route’ lasts two hours and includes two of the famous Zagreb lakes, Bundek and Jarun. The ride on the tour bus enables guests to get to know, through the one or two hour tour, the rich 900 year old history of the city and many interesting facts connected to it, for example: that the first written document mentioning Zagreb dates back to 1094., that Radio Zagreb, as the first radio station in this part of Europe first started broadcasting in 1926. and that the first motorised vehicle first drove through the streets of Zagreb in1901.

Opatija, the old lady of Croatian tourism is a well known tourist destination, which was used by the Austro-Hungarian elite as an ideal holiday destination. But what is not so well known is that the Opatija hinterland has a lot to offer too. In order to revitalize the hinteland of Opatija, a historical path that leads from the centre of Opatija to the old core Veprinac has been opened. The walking path has been widened, tiled, the old stone parts fixed, new direction boards have been put up as well as benches for resting and educational boards in four languages that explain the history and the trail towards Veprinac. This is a trail that has been used in the past by the locals on a daily basis, by which they would reach the shore where they would trade their products. Today, it serves for a pleasant walk, an escape from the city bustle and enjoyment of untouched nature. The renewal of the path to Veprinac is part of a project that aims to constuct a net of trails on the slopes of Učka, which connect a number of native settlements as well as pass through beautiful natural landmarks. In this way tourists, visitors and mountaineers can get to know all of the features of the Opatija riviera hinterland.

Dubrovnik–FestivalofchambermusicamongancientwallsThe story behind the Festival of chamber music Julian Rachlin and friends began in 2000. when one of the world’s most famous violon maestro’s Julian Rachlin appeared at the Dubrovnik summer festival for the first time. Thrilled with the atmpsphere, ambience and accoustics of Knežev dvor, the Austrian violinist instantly fell in love with Dubrovnik and came to the idea of organizing a summer music festival located inside a unique historical city core, the most beautiful musical stage. The first festival was already held the year after. Maestro Rachlin invited his friends to join him at these concerts in Dubrovnik and they were all as impressed with the city as he was. Even today, visitors of Dubrovnik include some of the world’s most famous musicians – the cellist Mischa Maisky, pianist Itamar Golan, violinist Janine Jansen, cornist Radovan Vlatković and many others who take time out every September to visit Dubrovnik and the Festival. The uniqueness of this music event but also the venue it takes place at are best described by the maestro Rachlin himself : «I have never held concerts like the ones at Knežev dvor; the Festival in Dubrovnik represents an unusual combination of art and friendship, a rearly experienced synergy...». In the past decade the Festival of chamber music Julian Rachlin and friends has become an unavoidable musical manifestation on the cultural map of Europe, that with its friendly atmosphere offers guests an ultimate musical experience. All the chamber music concerts are held in the atrium of Knežev dvor, except when they are moved to the concert hall at Fort Revelin because of weather conditions. As a part of the Festival a free concert for the public is held at noon in the church of St. Ignacius and also interesting is the «Concert in white», at which the performers and the audience are all dressed in white. This year the Festival will be held from the 1st to the 12th of September.

Zagreb–ThequeenofsportsonthebanksofSavaZagreb and the Sports park Mladost will this year also, on the 1st September accommodate many top athletes, Olympic medal winners, world champions and record breakers. The Zagreb athletic meeting, former Memorial to Boris Hanžeković, from this year is a part of the IAAF World Challenge series. This is a meeting with a 60 year tradition and is highly rated in the world of athletics. This year’s meeting has gotten the honor of hosting the final competition of the male Hammer Challenge, which means the world’s best hammer throwers will come together in Zagreb. This athlete story was born more than half a century ago with the duel of Zagreb’s strongest clubs – Mladost and Dinamo, and in 1958. with the participation of top althletes the meeting became international. The 110m Memorial hurdle race, that has been organized as part of the meeting since the very beginning, carries the name of a pre war athlete and representative from Zagreb, Boris Hanžeković, who became famous by beating the well known Greek Hristos Mantikas, at Balkanijada in 1938. Already in the 1960’s and 1970’s the meeting was attended by respected athletes but a real influx of world stars to Zagreb began in 1997. and has been increasing with every new meeting. In 1998. the popular «Hanžek», as this competition is usually called, climbed to first place on the meeting chart of the EAA (European Athletic Association), and in 1999. was listed on a higher rank – under meetings of the IAAF. Proof that the Zagreb meeting is highly respected in the world’s athlete family is that the IAAF included «Hanžek» among 14 cities which have kept the Grand Prix status in the new system of the World Athletics Tour. Only the Golden league is above it (6 meetings) and the Super Grand Prix (5).The trademark of the meeting is Croatian athlete, the world champion in high jumping, Blanka Vlašić. The night atmosphere, fantastic results and excellent organisation, give this top sporting event its charm.

Koprivnica–RenaissancefestivalOn the walls of the old city of Koprivnica in September of every year, a real historical event takes place. Under tents, the knights hone their swords as to win the hand of their maiden through a duel, hunting hawks circle the air listening to their masters commands, and merchants and craftsmen shout from the top of their voices to attract customers to their stands with their ‘medieval’ artifacts. The streets are filled with attractive fragnances of renaissance cuisine and exotic foods that were used in the past. This Renaissance festival takes place on the walls of the former magnificant fortress used in battles against the Turks. This tourist-historic and educational event, the Renaissance festival is the biggest spectacle of live images from the past in this part of Europe, which has its stronghold in historical facts. Dishes made from nettle will take visitors back to the 13th century when Koprivnica was first mentioned and the manifestation starts with the staging of the arrival of King Louis of Anjou in 1356. and the handing over of the Charter of the Royal Borough.Besides the scenic views of medieval life, chivalry, sieges, music and dance, visitors will be able to enjoy from the 4th to the 6th of September, dishes made from ancient recipes.

Sisak–CelticnightIn Sisak, every year in the first days of September at the time of the new moon on the promenade of the River Kupa the tourist-historical spectacle Celtic night is held. It is one of the most important and most impressive tourist manifestations in the Sisak-Moslavina county. On the rafts, Sisak legends are played out, and druids and priestesses hand out a magical potion to the audience. With the light of torches and spotlights images from mysterious Sisak legends come out from the night. On the 4th September visitors will see fairies and warriors dancing to the rythm of drums, Celts sailing their rafts on Kupa, tasting the magical druid potion and participating in the mystical rites of conjuring ancient warriors, beauties, bishops and their persecutors, warrior conquerors and defenders of life and freedom. On the rafts in front of visitors, scenes from the lives of Celts and Romans will be played out. This is a night where these rafts, moved only by the river, will show scenes from the history of Sisak and tell a three thousand year old story of wars, rebellion, magnificent moments from the past, successes and battles won and the rises and falls of mighty empires. The people of Sisak, in this one hour show, remember how their city used to look like once. Celtic night was last year proclaimed the best tourist manifestation in continental Croatia. The Celts came to the Sisak area in the 4th century B.C. and conquered the old Ilyrian tribes with whom they etnically and culturally mixed and later formed the settlement Segestica. Ilyrian – Celtic tribes managed to resist the pressures of the Romans up until 35. B.C., when Octavian conquered and tore apart Segestica with 12.000 soldiers, after a thirty day siege. From the initial military camp, the Roman Siscia soon rose and got the status of a city with extremely strong military, transport and administration functions, developed trading and crafts and a famous mint that was used throughout the Roman empire. The town Sisak is located in the southeast of Zagreb on the mouths of the Rivers Odra into Kupa and Kupa into Sava. Its geographical location and natural advantages influenced the development of the city, which beside the rich cultural-history offers its visitors many other interesting landmarks in its surroundings. Downstream from Sisak, along the left bank of Sava, stretches the nature park Lonjsko polje. In most part it is a flood area of the River Sava, with an extremely preserved plant and animal world and picturesque villages located along the river. Lonjsko polje is well known for its indigenous breed of horses and pigs and also one of the biggest hatcheries of fish.

ć The unique architecture of the wooden houses with many stork nests on them represent an extra attraction, while the village Čigoč has been named the European village of Storks. Here also is the archeological park Siscia. Protective archeological research resulted in the discovery of the urban complex of the Roman Siscija where visitors can see the city walls with the inner tower, a defensive moat and a part of the late Roman monumental building. Sisak experienced its glory days in the times of battles with the Turks and the highlight was a magnificent victory of the Christian army over the Turks in 1593. The news of the first big Turkish defeat after hundreds of years of military dominance, spread fast and Sisak became the centre of attention for a short period of time, throught the whole of Europe.

No gourmet in the world can be called one if they have never in their life tried truffles, the gourmet jewel of Istria. Truffles, mushrooms that grow underground are a trademark of Istria, and the people of Istria show their appreciation of it by jelaously guarding the recipes of dishes with truffles. The opportunity to get to know the real wealth of the truffle in every possible gastro combination is presented at Truffle days, which are held accross Istria during the autumn. The truffle is an unusual, tuberous growth that grows underground, with an unsightly shape and an intensive odor. Tartuf je neobična, gomoljasta izraslina koja raste pod zemljom, neugledna oblika i intenzivnog mirisa. This rare and expensive tuber that grows in the fertile Istrian soil is a real culinary delight. The Istrian white truffle is one of the most respected in the world. The culinary value of the truffle was discovered by old Romans; during the five centuries long rule of Venice, Motovun forrest carried the name St. Mark’s forrest and only individuals were allowed to remove truffles from its soil. With tha changing of rulers and the arrival od Austro-Hungary, the truffle could only reach one destination – the Viennesse court. However, even up until today it has been considered an exclusive delicacy – a peak of gastromomy. It is not visible above ground and can only be found by specially trained dogs or pigs.Istria has two types of soil; intensive dark red on the coast and grey, greasy, clay-like in the central part. Truffles grow in this grey land and the epicentre is in the damp Motovun forrest, through which runs the River Mirna. The truffle zone extends northeast to the towns Buzet and Lupoglava and southeast along the River Raša on Labinština and south to Pazinština.

It is believed that a few centuries ago the Paulines brought lace to the Croatian area. Recognizing its beauty, village folk accapted the knitting of lace as their own tradition, cherished to this day. It was most accepted by the inhabitants of the town Lepoglava, where the Pauline monestary was located. Proud of their lacing skills, the people of Lepoglava, every year in September organize an International festival of lace, where they promote lace as part of their ethnographical treasure. At the festival, which will be held from the 16th to the 19th September this year, exibited will be rich lace works from other European countries but visitors often find most interesting the domestic lace works from Croatian lace centres, which are next to Lepoglava, Pag, Sv. Marija and Hvar. Lepoglava lace had its boom at the end of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th century, when production was encouraged, courses, workshops and lacing schools were opened. The skill of making lace became the source of extra income because lace was sold at fairs and exibitions in Zagreb, but also accross western Europe.Lepoglava lace has won medals in many competitions. In Paris in1937. It was awarded a gold medal, and in Berlin in 1939. a bronze one. This period was the most flourishing for Lepoglava lace.Lepoglava is a town located in the spectacular landscape of Zagorje, beneath Ivanščica, not far from two European motorways Zagreb – Vienna and Zagreb –Budapest. Here, after 1683. the first secondary school and the first university in Croatia was founded, with the right to give academic titles. The parish church, convent and chapel in the area were decorated with frescoes by the famous Pauline Ivan Ranger and are well known monuments of baroque artistry.

The people of Vinkovci often say : «Who experiences the atmosphere of Vinkovci in the autumn is sure to come back again!» And really, it is hard to describe all the events which take place in those ten autumn days that the people of Vinkovci, as tireless hosts, organize for their guests that come from all over the world. The whole town, along with its visitors is carried and lives in song and dance. The autumn days in Vinkovci represent folklore that does not only cherish the Slavonian traditions but also the traditions from all parts of Croatia, as to, in this way mark the coming of autumn, a season when nature awards the all year hard, unselfish work of peasants. When Slavonia started adapting the busy rythm of modern life and when there was a danger felt of losing the special ways of Slavonians, there appeared a need of preseravtion of traditional culture of that area. It was brought to life by an original, folklore festival, first of Slavonija and Baranja, after which this manifestation went over the regional borders and began connecting everyone who loves and respects traditional culture, language and customs. Vinkovci, the heart of Šokadija, became a gathering place of original, national culture and way of life, with this unique festival, which year after year becomes enriched with new manifestations; science, tourism, economy, sports and fun . And it has been like this for 40 years. This year Vinkovci will accommodate lovers of folklore culture from the 10th to the 19th September.

The best fishermen of the world gather each September in Jezera, a small fishing village on the island Murter in central Dalmatia, as to compete in catching the «big fish»

- Big Game Fishing. Drawing out large specimens of fish can take hours, and this kind of fishing can also get rather unpredictable . The catch, the fight, the overcoming and the drawing the fish, which can sometimes weigh a few hundred kilos, out, among which are ,apart from the blue tuna; luca, igluna and albacore tuna, requires from fishermen extreme strength, patience and knowledge. This is an adrenaline sport, uncertain and unpredictable to the very end, which reveals new challenges that bring out team work and a competitive spirit. It is the biggest European competition that is organized at the end of summer, which is the best time for catching tuna and other big sea fish. It is held in the rich fishing areas of Blitvenica, Žirje and Kornati, and this 12th year begins on the 19th September.Big Game Fishing has become a prestige event at which all the big names of the big game fishing world like to be seen at. Thanks to this competition the small fishing village Jezera has become famous in the sports fishing world. Jezera is located on the southeast side of the island Murter, the biggest archipelago of Šibenik. The island is interesting because of its closeness to land which it is connected to by a 30 metre long bridge. Surrounded by hills, Jezera is drawn into the horseshoe shaped bay. Because of its position it is not exposed to strong winds and its cove is perfect for docking and mooring. In its proximity are two national parks: Kornati and Krka.Although the first document of Jezera dates back to 1298., it is probably much older, because not far from it, in the bay Podjasenovac, two graves of the Ilyrian tribe Liburni were dicovered, from a pre ancient period, in 1938. The people of Jezera are very proud of their traditional costumes, customs, songs and dances, which can get to be known by tourists in the summer months through the many cultural, sporting and fun events, that are held under the name ‘Days of the sea’. During the time of Big Game Fishing visitors will not be «spared» of the many other interesting manifestations.

Varaždin–ThecityofbaroqueVaraždin has been famous throughout its history for being one of the central points of cultural life in Croatia. However, the 18th century was the turning point for the city’s cultural life. In this period the city intensly progressed and from 1755-76. it was the capital city of Croatia, under the influence of all the richness of baroque and the aristocrat elite that were fascinated by it, it became the centre of unbridled balls and the luxury aristocrat life. To honor baroque and its richness, that has greatly marked this city and earned it the name «little Vienna», in Varaždin, every year there is a traditional festival of baroque music. Varaždin baroque nights, every September and October turn back time to a period when in the rich city palaces you could hear indescribable musical creativity and witness the gracefull dances and cultural events. The festival was founded in 1970., and through the years it has become a recognizable cultural manifestation, well known in Croatia and Europe. It has become an irreplacable part of the Varaždin tourist offer, promoting the city’s history, not only through music but also through the unique architecture. The baroque churches and palaces and the Old Town are a part of Varaždin that give it its identity. This festival of music brings every year many world famous artists, soloists, orchestra’s and ansambles. It is an experience that cannot be described but has to be experienced first hand. The concerts take the audience a few centuries back in time, to a period when music was a highly aesthetic art. Many concerts of Croatian and foreign ansambles create a romantic atmosphere of a baroque town, but are also very important from a music point because in their program they sometimes preform just discovered or never before played pieces. Also, with the introduction of modern interpretations of already famous pieces , the Baroque festival achieves remarkable results in the professional approach to baroque music.

NoviVinodolskiandtherivieraNovi Vinodolski is an attractive tourist town, far known for its beautiful sandy and rocky beaches, a one hundred year old park, rich vegetation, country villas and luxury apartments and hotels which are visited by tourists from all over the world. It is located in the middle part of the northen Croatian coast, and has developed from an old Frankish fort called Novigrad and spread along the coast.Novi Vinodolski is characterized by the coastal architecture of white fronts and red rooftops that rise above the old city core, from sea level to the church and tower on the hill, high above the city’s conture.Because of its beauty, closeness and extremely good infrastructure, this city attracts more tourists from year to year. The Adriatic tourist road connects Novi Vinodolski across Rijeka with central Europe and is located at the end of a road that leads through an area of high black forests of Kapela, the shortest route across Ogulin that connects continental Croatia with the sea. This is a city of exceptional history, populated since the ancient times, with many monuments of culture from that period, among which are the walls of the Roman fort Lopsica, then the remains of the Pauline monestary, the Frankish castle with a tower, the church of the Holy Trinity and St. Marina on the island of the same name, the house of the Mažuranić brothers, the Heritage museum and the gallery, and the old city centre. In the city centre there is a Frankish castle with a square tower which houses a modernly decorated National library founded in 1845. The Korzo in Novalja is one of the most beautiful coastal streets which with its futuristic and unusual wavey look especially intrigues visitors and tourists. Throughout the whole year the Korzo is a sort of a «living room» to the people of Novalja and many tourists. It has many cafe’s with terraces and small shops, and the walking area is decorated with trees and flowers. Thanks to the evergreen vegetation and mild conditions of the mediterranean area, clean sea and air, Novi Vinodolski was in 1878., after Opatija, included on the list of tourism pioneers of the coastal area. The city has a mild and healthy mediterranean climate with mild and pleasant warm and sunny summers, with the daily temperature moderated by the light winds coming from the sea. Even though the days of the swimming seasons are mostly sunny, high temperatures can be endured because the mild winds that blow through the Vinodolski canal, ease the summer heat. The hospitality of the population, the crystal blue sea, the city and its surroundings without industrial pollution, the mountain air from the high forest of the hinterland are all suitable for hunting tourism and are priceless advantages in the development of tourism in this area. In Pavlomir, not far from Novi Vinodolski, 25 acres of vineyards have been planted, so the people of Novalja are proud of their quality wines.Classic hotels, modern tourist resorts, camps, bungalows,

apartments and rooms in private houses offer acommodation capacities to over 10.000 tourists a day. Built as part of the hotel resorts or close to them are sporting grounds, inner and outter swimming pools with sea water, saunas and similar facilities. In Novi Vinodolski one of the most beautiful and most luxurious resorts in Croatia has been built – Novi Spa Hotels & Resort, which can acommodate around 1500 gueats in its apartments. At the resort there are nine swimming pools, restaurants, children’s city, a garage with 500 parking spaces and the largest wellness centre in this part of Eaurope, that stretches 10.000 square meters.During the summer months Novi Vinodolski offers its guests a number of interesting cultural and fun events. The waters of the city port with vessel berths, gas stations, a crane for lifting and lowering vessels, a parking lot, are all intended for nautical tourists, for whom an emergency service and sea rescue has also been organized. With the Adriatic tourist road, the railway station Rijeka, the airport Krk-Rijeka, and especially the sea routes, this city is connected to Europe and the Medinerranean. Novi Vinodolski can also be reached by motorway by a 20km route.

PovileA small coastal village with only about 200 inhabitants is located only 2 km from Novi Vinodolski. It is located near the Adriatic motorway and stretches across two bays, where tourist resorts and three autocamps have been built. The sea is very clear and especially suitable for sports fishing and underwater activities. This place is suitable for guests who seek to find a quiet Mediterranean atmosphere. Catering services can be found in the tourist resorts or the private restaurants that offer a rich choice of fish and other national delicacies.

Klenovica – KrmpoteKlenovica is mentioned in the 17. st. as a settlement of Krmpoćan’s. It is located on the far southeast side part of Novi Vinodolski. Here live about 400 people of which many are outstanding fishermen. The part of Klenovice - Krmpota is a direct contrast of the grey, mountain massive and the mild Mediterranean climate. Along the coast stretch natural beaches and bushes and just a few kilometers to the northUz morsku obalu protežu se prirodne plaže i šumarci, a samo nekoliko kilometara sjevernije stretch the forest slopes of Kapela and Velebita. Klenovica offers around 500 beds in family houses, 50 beds in the apartments of the Vila Lostura and about 2000 places in autocamps. Also here are a few very good sea food restaurants that offer a rich choice of fish specialities. It has a good port, a post office, a gas station and shops. West of Klenovica is the bay Žrnovnica with a rich supply of good drinking water, from which the whole county is supplied with water.

Smokvica – SibinjHas good acommodation capacity in private housing and a camp in Sibinj. Stands out with extremely beautiful beaches.

LedeniceLedenice were for centuries the watchtower at the entry to the Vinodolska valley. Located 8km southeast of Novi Vinodolski it lays on a grassy plateau. In the 16th century the fort and its walls were very important for the coastal area in their defense from the Turks. At the beginning of the 18th century the old Ledenice city lost its importance and became deserted, and beneath the fort sprouted todays village. Today Ledenice with the surrounding places; D. Zagon, Bater and Brezam is an interesting resort which offers good conditions for hunting tourism, cycling and mountain walks.
