Year 7A students have settled in well into our

new classroom. :)

So far this term students have had the opportunity to

cook lots of things during our life skills lessons. One of

their favourite things to make was Potato Bake where

they learned how to peel potatoes and even got to show

Mr Ryall what to do. [Mr Ryall is our IT specialist]

For Mothers Day we made orange scented Bath Salts

which smelt divine! Students particularly enjoyed

choosing the scent and adding the food colouring. Next

week we are going to start walking to the shops for

Community Access so that students can go shopping to

buy the ingredients that we will be using in cooking.

During this time students will learn how to read shopping

lists, purchase food and navigate the shopping centre.

Photo Voice Incursion—Yr 8 & 9

Students in Year 8 and 9 have started their

journey into photography.

They watched a presentation by Rhiarn Baker from the Rockingham City

Council PhotoVoice Project and photographer Kingsley Klau from Photo

Coffee Photography.

The students saw photos that matched the Theme ‘Act, Belong,

Commit’. They talked about things they might be interested in and how

these might work in a photo.

Kingsley showed them a little bit about the photos 1/3s concept, using

colour and black and white, using light and adding something of interest

into their photos.

The students will be having ago at taking and editing their own photos

over the next few weeks. There is also possibility of entering the photo

voice competition at the end of the course if they have completed work.

Students from Yr 9 travelled up to the Perth Mint recently. They were all given a work sheet to complete while on

tour to enable them to receive a imitation medallion.

The students were amazed when they go to see the largest gold coin in the world worth 1 million dollars. They also

learnt the history of the Australian Perth Mint and watched the melting and pouring of Gold. Students were able to

touch one of the gold bars and were allowed to try and pick it up; weighing 12 kilos!! Learning about the history of

the early Gold Rush proved very interesting and kept students engaged.

During the tour, students and staff weighed themselves and their weight was calculated to the value price of gold

that day. Some students also stamped their own coin.

It was a great trip up to Perth, even though the weather was abhorrent.

Phoebe doesn't want to be ordinary. She wants to turn heads and be noticed - she wants to be fabulous! But when she seeks the help of the outrageous and beautiful Zelda, her transformation leads to some unexpected results.

Year 7b have been very busy working on positive affirmations.

After reading the book “Feathers for Phoebe” and discussions in class, students got down to work devising affirmations about self acceptance—

some being:-

Be yourself, because there is no one like you

It is OK to be different—

I am who I am

They then decorated some birds [which look amazing] to express their feelings.

If you have not yet seen their work up on the wall, I suggest next time

you are visiting come and have a look, they are beautiful with some very positive affirmations.

“We became Criminal Scene Investigators for a day. We had to find out who the culprit was!” Year 9 students visited Scitech on Tuesday, 1st May 2018 to attend a CSI Forensic workshop.

Case Notes

The Western Australian Museum in Perth often displays exhibitions from all over the world. The current temporary

visiting exhibition from Egypt includes many valuable artefacts.

Break-in at the museum On the night of December 3rd 2014, a break-in occurred at the Museum in Perth. We were called in on the morning

of December 4th to determine if anything was missing. The curator of the museum, Lee Lim, informed us that a pottery urn was missing and had been swapped with a poorly made fake. A sample of some valuable papyrus string

that would have been wrapped around the urn was also missing. We used science inquiry skills to investigate

evidence collected from the scene of a crime. We also made observations analyse results and develop explanations based on the evidence.

We had to examine the Scene Examiner’s Evidence Report. They are as follows:

1. Suspect interview notes

2. Tail light fragments found outside museum entrance in the loading bay. 3. Tyre tracks in the loading bay.

4. Paint chips found with tail light fragments. 5. Fingerprints on the exhibit where the urn was swapped.

6. Clothing threads found in the display area of the urn out of public access.

7. Hand written note found on the ground behind the urn exhibit. 8. Pottery fragments found on the ground next to the urn exhibit.

9. Soil sample in the foyer entrance inside the museum. 10. Purple paint like liquid found in the staff lunchroom.

11. Green ink like liquid found in the staff lunchroom. 12. Suspected swapped string found with fake urn

13. Hair samples found next to the fake urn

After examining the evidence, no one managed to solve who the culprit was. Being a Criminal Scene Investigator is

really not easy!

Yr 10 HASS/Community Access

The Year 10s along with our senior school visited the Bell Tower in Perth City. Student's participated in a group tour learning about the bells and their significance in our states history. Students were also given the opportunity to 'ring the bells' and experience the beautiful panoramic views of the Swan River and Perth City from the top floor.

Try a Trade—Yr 9

Ethan Berglund, Joshua Bender and Lachlan Parkes from Year 9,

participated in “Try a Trade” at the Rockingham TAFE Campus.

The boys tried their hand at Brick Laying and Solid Plastering hands on learning tasks. It was a highly engaging, practical and very busy three days. Well done to them all—fantastic effort

Hospitality Group Training Ambassadors Program

The aim of the Hospitality Group Training’s (HGT) Hospitality Ambassadors Program is to showcase jobs within the Hospitality Industry. With having a young Chef (Sean Woolford) prepare food and discuss his training and qualification pathway, it enabled the students to see the process in a real life situation.

Sean talked to the students about teamwork, job skills, different hospitality roles and a positive attitude. (This included dish washing which he was still happy to do as a qualified chef and team member). He was happy to answer any questions the students had. His open nature engaged our students. They enjoyed the demonstration, with some students asking about pathways they might like to try in the future.

The students who attended the demonstration

were part of the senior school. Sixteen of these students are currently involved in Certificate I and II Hospitality (which HGT oversee so we comply to Industry Standards) or the Meal Preparation and Cooking Unit (ASDAN). As part of their courses they run the Dolphin Café every Wednesday. This entails 3 hours of service (set up, orders, 60 + coffees, delivery and clean up) followed by 2 hours of course work. They also help cater for the Open Day and special occasions. Some of the students’ put their skills to use as part of the Pop Up Café at Gracehaven.

These programs help develop teamwork, work skills, problem solving and communication skills. They also build the students’ self-confidence and independence whilst providing a hands on experience to their curriculum.

RSHS ESC is forging forward into a new technological era! This year

our school has embraced new technology to ensure that ALL of our students can learn in the most innovative, creative and modern way possible.

The school prioritised student learning and purchased individual iPads for every student throughout the school. The iPad will enable all students to

record their learning in innovative means, and enables teachers to plan for

engaging lessons using the latest apps. It takes the pressure off the students, who have disabilities and lower literacy skills and gives them a tool

to show their learning and understanding.

This year the school has a specialist Options teacher, Jacky Lovegrove who has been teaching Digital Technology skills with the students using small

robots called, Spheros. Students have loved learning about coding and using the iPad to control their Spheros.

To further show the school’s dedication to rolling out this new technology

initiative, the school launched their new official Facebook page too. This communication tool will enable us to celebrate our students successes

immediately with our parents and our community.

Ms Batchler will be ordering our very own VR Goggles for the school and staff and students cannot wait.

A very exciting time to be in Education Support!

[Thanks to Jodie from Bungaree Primary School who came to our school to demonstrate the VR

Goggles. Students and staff had an amazing experience.] Ms Caroline Mason

Improving student academic and behaviour outcomes is facilitated when all students have access to the most effective and accurately implemented instructional and behavioural practices and interventions possible. RSHS ESC PBS provides an operational framework for achieving these outcomes. It is a decision making framework that guides selection, integration and implementation of the best evidence based practices for improving academic and behaviour outcomes for all students. Schools implementing PBS build on existing strengths, complementing and organising current programming and strategies.
