The 2013-2014 year for Community Outreach was a great success in learning and growing in special interests. We were blessed to have a very diverse and knowledgeable staff that was able to share and teach about agriculture, French, photo journalism, zoology, home economics and current events. This upcoming year we plan to again offer classes for student’s special interests in the spring, but plan to spend our fall semester working with an education program at Radford University, and student literacy. This past month we were fortunate to begin the planning in conjunction with Radford University's education program to develop a more in depth literacy program for our students. To ensure they are at the right level for their needs, education students will be testing, working with, and developing individualized programs for students based on their needs and current reading levels. This individualized attention will ensure that students with the greatest need will not be left behind in our classrooms; the programs which the Radford University students develop can follow the children throughout their entire time spent at COP. The literacy program is also a great tool for communicating with parents and letting them know how well their children are improving, current levels and overall reading goals. We are very excited for this collaboration and the possibilities that this encouragement and assessment can add to the success of all our students. LAB Reading winners. The Outreach Quarterly, Newsletter of the United Methodist Community Outreach Program of Roanoke. The Community Outreach Program is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization improving the quality of life of inner city children living in poverty by providing tutoring, evening meals, school supplies and programs such as U Feed Others (UFO) weekend meals, Clothing Closet, Christmas Angels and Camp. From September to May children are transported from their homes three nights each week. After eating a volunteer provided dinner, children are engaged in learning: math, spelling, reading, and even physical education. The programming is varied and tailored to individual needs and goals.

It is with great joy that we close out the 2013-

14 school year. We ended with picnics and

celebrations all over the place. We have

served thousands of meals together, and

helped children see God’s love for them by

showing kindness, responsibility, care, and

concern for their well-being. Our partnership

with Community Youth Program has flowered

this year and we are excited to continue into

next year. Thank you for being part of the

mission we so diligently strive to provide for

our students: a safe nurturing environment

where all God’s children are mentored

academically, physically, spiritually and

emotionally.

We have some wonderful highlights planned

for the summer, including Summer Camp, a

potluck dinner where families can come and

register their children for the 2014-15 year as

well as trainings for our volunteers and staff.

Next we are adding Huntington Court UMC

as a satellite site to the family of C.O.P. They

will be serving the Round Hill Elementary

school by supporting 15 children with meals,

activities, homework help, and spiritual

education. Our total student capacity for

2014-15 is 95 students. We are so blessed to

be able to continue the work started by so

many dedicated United Methodists. This year

is our 25th year in operation. My how times

change and mission keeps moving us

forward; let us celebrate together!! There will

be more information coming about when

and where we will be celebrating this

wonderful ministry and 25 years of serving

Roanoke’s children.

Blessings to you,

Rebecca Parsons

Thanks to a generous grant of $2,500 from

the Maximus Foundation, members of the

C.O.P. Choir had a fun overnight followed by

a performance at St. Mark’s UMC in Daleville.

The first Old Southwest Enchanted Garden

Tour was a huge success, with guests oohing

and ahhing over flowers, vegetables, ponds

and landscaping. Over $1,500 was raised for

C.O.P., thanks to the efforts of long-time

neighborhood resident Tim Taylor and the

volunteers and homeowners

who helped with the event.

Our annual Golf Tournament on

a beautiful May day raised over

$6,500 with all the golfers going

home with prizes donated by

local businesses. Once again

Hartley Gaston stepped in to

help organize the event. The

main sponsor was the Salem

Host Lion’s Club.

We are so excited to begin

thinking about our fall

semester of C.O.P. With this in

mind we wanted to extend

an invitation to join us for a

short meeting and training

session about our new

programming for all current

and prospective volunteer

tutors, kitchen helpers and

others.

Training will be held

on Tuesday, September 2nd

from 5:00-7:00 at Trinity United

Methodist Church. We will be

discussing various topics

including our new partnership

with Radford University,

literacy and tutoring

programming and general

guidelines for our volunteers.

Your role here at C.O.P is such

a big part of our success and

we greatly appreciate your

time and dedication to the

program. We hope to see

you then. We will be sending

out additional reminders as

the meeting time grows near.

Our Superhero fun Run/Walk,

originally scheduled for this

July, has been postponed.

We’ll let you know as soon as

we have a new date.
