ELEMENTARY BOYS BASKETBALLOn Monday, November 5 the elementary basketball team took home a win against Standing Rock. On Thursday November 8th the elementary boys basketball team played Fort Yates in Cannon Ball. They played hard but were not able to pull off the win.

JUNIOR HIGH GIRLS VOLLEYBALLThe Junior High Girls volleyball season was an overall success. We had just enough players to make a team! This season we worked on perfecting fundamental skills. The ladies got more control over their digging the ball and started working on setting each other up. Spiking the ball was pretty easy but setting was something we will work more on next season. We won some and lost some but together we improved the most on our language. We started the season using “You and I” and changed to working on language of “We”. With each season we come more together as a team, perfect our skills, and improve our teamwork and life skills!

Classroom Highlights4th Grade: Over a long weekend Ms. Eagle challenged her students to “create something”. They could use any materials to create ANYTHING of their choice. The students wrote about their creative projects and shared their creations with their classmates. Some students shared their creation stories below:

Jose Iron Road (10 years old)- “I made an arrow. I found a stick and sharpened it with a scissors. I got some string and feathers from Ms. Eagle. The feathers help my arrow keep its balance. I liked this project because I got to make something.”

Kaylee Conica ( 9 years old)- “I made a fairy garden. I picked some rocks and

used a glass jar from my room. I made grass out of paper, my mom printed a fairy and butterflies. I used a birthday banner to create the light the fairy creates. I won a butterfly in class, so I put that in my jar too, so my fairy could have a real butterfly.”

Kaleciah One Horn (10 years old) “I made a Halloween scene. I knew Halloween was coming up and I wanted to make something Halloween. First, I remember my mom threw away a chair and I used the cushion to make spider webs. Then I made a spider out of black construction paper. I made the ghosts big and I wanted to make them look like they were floating.”

Brayleigh Giroux (9 years old)- “ I made

a star out of melted crayon. First, I thought about it, but I didn’t’ know what to make. Then the idea just popped into my head. Then, I found a box of crayons and a canvas. Then I glued the crayons on the canvas. Then, I put it against the wall and used a hair dryer to melt the crayons. My mom taught me how to melt the crayons.”

Sophie day (9 years old)- “I made a sunflower in the shape of a heart. First, I found a carboard and went outside to find leaves and a stick. I used tape to make the sunflower. I put my handprints on the cardboard to make it pretty. I put all my family members names in the heart shaped sunflower.”

SIOUX CROSS-COUNTRY This year was a very successful year for our runners. We had three boys and one girl run their 5000 meters (3.1 miles) under 20 minutes for the first time in since I took over. Daniel Martin, Elliot Thunder Hawk, Cameron Red Bear, and Astacia Conica posted 6-plus different personal bests during this season. Andrew Ironroad ran 7:34 seconds faster between his first and last race. We had six runners compete at the regional and state meet. Five of our six runners placed in the top half of the state.

Josie White Eagle earned her 2nd all conference finish at regionals taking 4th place. She also earned her first all-state finish, placing 16th out of 243 athletes.

Astacia Conica, Josie White Eagle, Trevion Two Hearts, Elliot Thunder Hawk, and Cameron Red Bear all competed at the Nike Heartland Regional race. Josie White Eagle came away with the highest finish, placing 44th out of 963 runners. She ran her personal best time of 19:50.Josie White Eagle- All State

Solen Sioux VotersSolen High School sent 5 seniors to vote on election day. Thank you to Ms. Longie for giving our students an opportunity to let their voice be heard.

SOLEN SIOUX FALL SPORTS ATHLETES Not in order: Junior High Volley Ball: Julissa Johnson, Jackie Plenty Chief, Tashaun Ironroad, Jada Fast Horse, Shaylee Uses Arrow, Cienna Red Bear. High School Volley Ball: Teyah Uses Arrow and Latosha Thunder Hawk. Cross Country: Elliot Thunder Hawk, Trevion Two Hearts, Cameron Red Bear, Daniel Martin, Andrew Ironroad, Josie White Eagle, Astacia Conica.Football: Ethan Thunder Hawk, Dontae Carry Moccasin.

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALLThe 2018 volleyball season was a new challenge for our ladies. This being the first year we had a co-op with Standing Rock. We had two students from Solen High School who participated in volleyball, Latosha Thunder Hawk and Teyah Uses Arrow.

Teyah had a great season, especially after being changed to varsity’s setter from being an outside hitter for so long. Teyah added various strengths to the team, such as her serve, which was very consistent, and her ability to hit from the outside. She always threw in some trick plays with her smart vision of the court. She definitely learned her new position fast and did it extremely well. Teyah finished the season with 69 aces, 38 kills, 26 blocks, 101 digs and 675 assists.

Latosha had a great season especially with her being new to the sport and having no volleyball experience. Her position as middle hitter is a tough position to play but with her athletic ability and height she handled the job with no complaints. She caught on fast and started on varsity right away. Latosha brought a lot of confidence to a young team. When she stepped foot on the court she brought a lot of determination. Latosha finished the season with 66 aces, 22 kills, 46 blocks, and 30 digs.

Definitely some coachable players, very proud of these two ladies and the way they performed throughout the season.

SOLEN- STANDING ROCK FOOTBALLThis season had a lot of ups and downs. It also had a lot in common with last season. The one thing that was different from all of the previous years was the dedication to the sport and the team spirit that Donte, Rueben, and Ethan showed. They went to every practice this year. They were guys that we could consistently count on to be at practice and remain eligible. They had the right mind-set. After every game, win/or loose, they were pumped about what happened during the game as well as eager to get back to practice and fix what didn’t go so well.

Some main highlights this year were Ethan getting three sacks as a defensive end. Ethan played hard every down and can perform when the team needs it. Dontae was a very good offensive linemen, who was excellent with setting a pocket, as well as a smart player who could fill any position when needed. Rueben started out the season as a freshman who was just learning the game. Rueben became a very important member of this team as he never left the field the entire game. That’s not saying he had growing pains, such as making catches or tackling the man with the ball. Towards the end of the season Rueben was a man on fire as he was catching passes. He was on a lot of solo tackles, and I for one, could see the developed player he was turning into.

SOLEN HIGH SCHOOL DECAThis is the first year Solen High School has participated DECA program. This program focuses on building leadership and entrepreneurial skills in our students. Solen High School sent six students to compete in the Fall Leadership Conference. Four out of six students met the expectation for the competition. This is a strong indication that our Solen Chapter has high potential in placing at the next DECA competition.

Solen High School DECA raised almost $400 for their chapter at their Applebee’s fundraiser. Special thank you to our hardworking students Antaya Thunder Hawk, Ezekiel Tiger, and LaMont Follet, club advisor Ms. Arellano, and Solen Sioux’s biggest cheerleader Mr. Hanson.
