Lent is a time of praying, fasting, forgiving both yourself and your peers, and to grow closer with God. Throughout Lent students are encouraged to reflect on their relationship with God and with each other as well as with the world around them. We open up dialogue with students around how to be the best people they can be. This week we welcomed our Prep students to school, FULL TIME, for the first time! They have all settled in very well, and we are extremely proud of each and every one of them. LANGUAGES EDUCATION - ITALIAN At St Paul’s we pride ourselves on delivering an Italian program that is of the highest standard. In a globalized world learning a language is a wonderful benefit. Not only does it help when travelling, it is also a great advantage for studying in general and for career prospects. Learning a second language has been linked to benefits that include improved memory and enhanced decision making skills. Learning languages opens up personal, social, cultural and employment opportunities throughout our connected world. Learning a language makes a person more conscious of the grammar in their own language, which often leads to improved first language skills. Studies show that the benefits of learning a language include stronger results in maths, reading comprehension and vocabulary by multilingual students. Language skills boost your ability to do well in problem-solving tasks across the board, a fact recognized through compulsory foreign language learning curriculum in schools. IMPORTANT DATES

Dear Families, As a Catholic school we place a strong emphasis on teaching students the meaning of Lent and its important characteristics in our daily lives.

The Victorian Curriculum states that learning languages: contributes to the strengthening of the community’s social, economic and international

development capabilities extends literacy repertoires and the capacity to communicate; strengthens

understanding of the nature of language, of culture, and of the processes of communication

develops intercultural capability, including understanding of and respect for diversity and difference, and an openness to different experiences and perspectives

develops understanding of how culture shapes and extends learners’ understanding of themselves, their own heritage, values, beliefs, culture and identity

strengthens intellectual, analytical and reflective capabilities, and enhances creative and critical thinking.

ITALIAN DAY Our students are very fortunate to experience such a high quality languages program. Last Monday, 5 March we had an extremely engaging Italian Day. We celebrated our Italian language learning with a “Big Pocket Educational Incursion”. Students made their own jar of Italian Tomato Sauce: Passata di Pomodoro. This workshop was a fully hands on learning experience which celebrates the annual coming together of the Italian family to make their year’s supply of passata. In classrooms our students enjoyed activities that focussed on Pinocchio, and in the afternoon we celebrated our day together with a slideshow of photos and we sang Happy Birthday in Italian. Thank you very much to all of our wonderful students for their participation and the respect they showed our visitors. We say a huge thanks to Signora Maria Cook for all of the effort that went into the day, as well as Melissa Tyquin for the hot lunch, Signora Anita and the St Paul’s staff.

ANDREW CHINN CONCERT Last Thursday we hosted Andrew Chinn and it was sensational! The day and night was a wonderful experience for our whole school community. All of our children enjoyed the sessions with him during the day, including our school choir. The highlight of Andrew’s visit was our evening concert in the Church. It was wonderful to see parents, children and past students enjoying the music and jokes throughout the evening. Thank you to Mr Denham Harvie for organising Andrew’s visit. We also thank our wonderful staff for their support during the day attendance at the evening concert.

WORKING BEE - TONIGHT! We are looking forward to tonight’s Working Bee. We begin at 3:30pm and conclude at 6:00pm. We are very grateful to those families that will be attending.

2018 PREP and NEW FAMILY WELCOME NIGHT - TUESDAY 13 MARCH 6:30pm To welcome our Prep and new families we will hold a special Information Night for our Prep families and we encourage new families from other year levels to join us. The evening will be held on Tuesday 13 March at 6:30pm.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS - BUILDING ARRANGEMENTS This week we relocated our Year 2/3 and Year 3/4 classes into the hall. Work will begin on those classrooms shortly. Alayne has worked tirelessly to organise the library resources to be packed up. Work on the library will also begin shortly. After School Care will relocate to the Meeting Room/Foyer Area as of this Tuesday 13 March. We have purchased a Shipping Container to house resources for the duration of the project, as well as storing large items following the completion of the project.

We also have tradespeople working at school on the Year 5/6 building. The decking at the front of our Year 5/6 classrooms needs to be fully removed and replaced. The Year 5/6 decking replacement work began earlier this week and will be a much safer, stronger decking when complete.

MONBULK LAWN BOWLS Currently all students are engaged in a Physical Education Unit learning about Lawn Bowls. The students will spend time over the next couple of weeks visiting Monbulk Lawn Bowls Club and developing their skills on the greens. Thank you to Emma-lee Curwood for providing this opportunity for the students.

DEAR MONBULK PROJECT 6 of our Year 6 School Leaders are part of an exciting community project, working with the MADCOW Monbulk Township Group (Monbulk and District Community Opportunities Working Group: MADCOW). The project is a short film: "Dear Monbulk - a love letter to Monbulk" . It is being made to celebrate the assets of the Monbulk community and the organiser of the project is Jeanette Pritchard. Jeanette is the secretary of the MADCOW group and is a past educator with many years of experience.

From the Principal (continued)

The project involves students from all the schools around Monbulk and it will involve students interviewing community members who were part of the history of Monbulk, those that are involved in community projects in the present, and those who can imagine for the future. Students in the project will be trained in the different areas of filming by professional film makers. There will be a wonderful community event to launch the film. We say a huge thanks to Paula Hogan for representing St Paul’s on the MADCOW committee and for supervising the students involved in this project.

2019 PREP ENROLMENTS - DO YOU HAVE A CHILD STARTING PREP NEXT YEAR? We have already begun collecting enrolment forms for 2019 Prep students. I have visited our kinders and distributed materials. I have been contacted online by prospective families. In order for us to effectively plan for the future, I respectfully request that if you have a child beginning Prep at St Paul’s in 2019 that you email or call the office to let us know. It would be most helpful if parents were able to complete an enrolment form ASAP for Prep 2019. We appreciate your support on this matter.
