following the Children’s Moment.

Annual De-Clutter the Church Day

A Great Success!

E ven though there are many areas you do not visit regularly, many rooms, closets and hallways were de-cluttered. Thank you to everyone who came on that day and worked throughout the week before for their

dedication and hard work. We are in agreement that it went so well that it should be an annual event.

======================================================

The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be observed on October 7. If you know a shut-in who might like to have communion delivered to them at their home that week, please contact the church office or a deacon. ============================

Vision Statement

We, the congregation of Second

Presbyterian Church accept that

we have been called to love,

serve and worship God; and to

proclaim the good news of our

Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

As a beacon of Christ serving

our community, we joyfully

pledge to use our God-given

gifts of time, talent and treasure

to meet the spiritual and physi-

cal needs of all people. We

exist by the grace of God, and

will respond each day to His

love by loving one another with

the kindness, humility and gen-

tleness of Jesus Christ.7

F all officially began last Saturday, September 22, and, despite my assumptions that it would stay

90 degrees forever, the weather has actually turned, and it really does feel like Autumn is upon us. Changes of season always get me thinking about changes of habits. Some of those habit changes are unavoidable; like changing from cutting the grass to raking the leaves or changing from wearing shorts and t-shirts to wearing long pants and sweatshirts. But other habit changes require intentional choice and commitment.

I want to suggest that all of us, as this new season begins, think about a new season in our personal life of faith. Maybe for you it means committing to come to worship more often or setting aside a new time to pray each day. Maybe it means committing to spending more time with your church family or adding a regular faith discussion to your family dinners.

I have realized recently that I have not been spending as much time in scripture as I would like to. I spend lots of time studying and working on the scripture that we will use in worship, but that can very easily become all the time that I devote. So, I want to challenge myself, and all of you too, to commit to adding a habit of daily Bible reading to our lives. I’ll leave it up to each of you how you go about doing it, but I am going to use the daily lectionary from our PC(USA) Book of Common Worship. This lectionary is a two-year cycle of daily readings including morning and evening Psalms, an Old Testament Reading, a New Testament Reading, and a Gospel Reading. While this will far from cover the entire Bible, it will give a seasonally appropriate, wide-ranging look at scripture. If you want to join me in this, you can find the daily readings at www.presbyterianmission.org/devotion/daily/ or you can download a copy of each month’s readings on the “learn” tab of www.spcnewark.org or pick up a print copy in the church office.

Maybe this is something you do on your own, or maybe you make this commitment as a couple or a family, or maybe you could even get a small group of people together from the church and commit to reading the same things and meeting occasionally to discuss. However it works for you, I am confident that if a group of us in the church commit to spending more time in scripture that God is going to use it to do wonderful things in our lives and in the life of the church. Are you game? If so, I would love to hear about your plan and your experience.
