I love the warm days, outdoor activities, sitting on the patio – but above all else I love the colours. The beauty of nature surrounds me, from the blue skies and puffy white clouds, to rich greens of the trees and the blooming flowers. I can’t seem to get enough of it! I spend as many hours outside as possible, so my quilting time takes a back seat. Now that the summer is ending and the CNE has wound down and the weather turns colder and the colours fade, I spend more time inside working on my quilts and getting ready for the start of the guild meetings. But I always remember those summer days to give me inspiration – colour, style, composition – they all play a role in my quilts. What colour combinations do I remember, and would they work in a quilt? How does a pop of green work on a grey wall? These memories fuel my creativity and inspire my design and fabric choices. When I think of the year ahead at our guild, I look forward to attending the evening meetings and seeing friends who are all interested in the same goal of learning more about quilting. I talk to members, learning of new quilt websites, blogs and books. I take books out of our library, participate in the members’ technique showcase, and take workshops to try new techniques. PROGRAMTuesday, September 20, 2016 Elisabeth Bacque Pioneer Women and Paper Patchwork
Ontario artist Elisabeth Bacque will present a historical series that grew from her fascination with early patchwork quilts, their intricate patterns and fine stitchery. Elisabeth uses collage and mixed media to celebrate the courage and achievements of 13 Canadian women pioneers. She incorporates paper images, birch bark, old letters, journals, maps and recipes instead of fabric to tell their fascinating stories.
Tuesday, October 18, 2016 Reeze Hanson Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilts
As a knowledgable speaker and gifted designer from Ohio, Reeze Hanson will be discussing the history of the hexagon shape in art, nature, and quilts. Her large collection of hexagon and Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilts will have us never looking at this traditional pattern in quite the same way again.
Tuesday, November 15, 2016 Mary Pal Accidental Artist
Mary Pal is a Canadian fibre artist whose work combines fibre manipulation and the tactile possibilities provided by stitch. Mary will tell us how she ventured from early quilting beginnings to her current cheesecloth creations, along with the artwork of the fibre artists who inspired her. Her artwork has received numerous awards from international exhibitions and is in private and museum collections throughout North America.

Wednesday, November 16 Introduction to Cheesecloth PortraitureThis introductory workshop covers a unique method of manipulating fabric that combines sculpting and painting with fibres. Included is an overview of how photographs may be adjusted on a computer. Working from a simple photo that Mary provides, you will explore the various options for using this technique, learning all the skills required to create stunning portraits out of cheesecloth.

SEW AND SHOW I have decided to change the name of this part of the evening program to “Sew and Show”, in the hopes that I will inspire more of you to strut your stuff. Many members enjoy this part of the guild meetings, sometimes even more than the guest speaker. It provides a small glimpse into the talents and personalities that are represented in this fabulous guild. I realize for many of you it is intimidating to stand and speak before such a large group, but it is only uncomfortable for the first few seconds. I encourage everyone, especially newer members, to show us your recently completed work and tell us a little bit about it. We appreciate your willingness to share.
All submissions can be brought to me (Sandy Lindal) or my new assistant Donnaleen Vlossack at the front of the meeting hall between 6:15 – 6:45 p.m. Small pieces will be displayed on the wall, and larger pieces will be held up on the stage by the “white glovers”.

Quilts at the Creek 2016

Thanks to everyone who participated in Q@C this year - from the many volunteers who help make it run smoothly, to those who took workshops, and of course to those who entered their quilts in the show!
Yes, it was HOT the weekend of the show, but people could always find shade, and made the ice cream truck a popular addition!
This was the fifth summer for Quilts at the Creek, and it was our biggest ever. It made a stunning display, with 298 quilts displayed throughout the village. We offered a trunk show with Kathy Doughty one evening prior to the show, and those who attended were treated to a great talk, and were able to get up close and personal with both Kathy and her quilts - great fun! And I heard the most wonderful things from people who
participated in Kathy’s workshops … hopefully we will see some of them on display at next summer’s show (July 29 & 30, 2017).

So what do we have planned for next summer? It’s Canada’s 150th birthday ... so we are hoping for a lot of red-and-whites! Northcott has donated red and white fabric, and every quilt that was entered in the 2016 show was sent home with one fat quarter. Visit our table at the September meeting, where we will have extras to distribute.
We would also encourage you to think about donating a quilt to Quilts of Valour, who are active participants every year. Cheryl Arkinson (author of Sunday Morning Quilts, A Month of Sundays, and You Inspire Me to Quilt) will be leading workshops at the 2017 event.

Our stalwart Bev Stevens has cut new kits for you to piece: colourful, straightforward and the result will be a quilt top you can be proud of!
Pick up a quilt sandwich (or two!) - bright & colourful ones for kids, beautiful florals or geometric designs in different colour ways....choose something that you'll have fun quilting...straight stitching with a walking foot or free-motion, both techniques are great!
At the September meeting, there will be discounted commercial kits, kits by Bev Stevens, and fat quarters available for purchase at the Community Quilting table.
To date, 71 quilts have been distributed to Syrian newcomers. The sponsoring organizations are so happy to be able to give these welcoming handmade gifts. Many, many thanks to the membership for so whole-heartedly embracing this initiative.
Another area of endeavour was being able to send 30 quilts to Fort MacMurray after the horrific wildfire that affected so many people’s lives. In May, these were dropped off at The Hobby Horse Quilt Shop in Georgetown. They organized the transportation and ensured that the quilts were given to families in need. A recent thank-you letter noted that after losing their home & all its contents, a family was making a new start and the quilt from YHQG was their first sentimental item. The recipient says, “I understand the long hours, the love and the caring that one puts into handmade quilts. I wanted to make sure that you know your gift is in the hands of someone who truly appreciates it.”
