Going forward with TAA business, it will be more cost effective for the Artline to be sent via email to our members. Beginning with this issue, in addition to being emailed, the Artline will be available on our website for downloading for those who prefer a hard copy. Going in this direction with the Artline will save TAA hundreds of dollars. Copies of the Artline will be mailed upon request for a $10 yearly fee. Our Executive Officers and Board members for the 2010-2011 administration are listed in this issue. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the officers and board members for their continued involvement. But you don’t have to be a board member or officer to serve TAA. Volunteer opportunities are plentiful allowing you to be an active member of TAA. Every one of our exhibits requires volunteers, and several critical positions remain unfilled, for example, “Hospitality” and “Exhibitions and Events” need volunteers. Please Volunteer! Volunteer! The TAA shows for this year begin with “Significant Expressions” at the SoNo Gallery, on exhibit until October 3, 2010. The shows continue with Invitational for TAA Award winners, the Miniature exhibition, the Fine Art of Compassion exhibit, the Portfolio President’s Letter Newsletter-September 2010 I became a member of Tidewater Artists Alliance (TAA) in 1998 when it was known as Tidewater Artist Association. I saw a notice in the Virginian-Pilot of a meeting for a new art group called Emerging Artists Tidewater, or EAT, at the d’Art Center when it was in that wonderfully funky building near Waterside. One of the requisites of becoming a member of EAT was that we had to join TAA too. So there you are, EAT has ceased to exist, and the founders of EAT, Danny Holcomb and Ces Ochoa, have moved on to greater opportunities. And now here I am with the honor of the office of President of Tidewater Art Alliance for this coming year. Life is full of surprises. I follow in the footsteps of some very notable personalities, from Irene Leach, to Rieneke Leenders, Ishina Feld, and Suzanne Watson. They have presented an achievement pace that I will have to really work hard to emulate. Thank you to Suzanne for her two years of service to TAA and for still being a very active member. Suzanne continues to work to bring TAA more exposure to the masses and to help us grow. The Invitational show at Senator Warner’s office in Norfolk will enhance TAA’s reputation. With our many talented prize winners participating, it is sure to be a success. And many thanks to Rienike Leenders, past President and now working diligently to produce the Mary Anne Tidewater Art Alliance for Visual Artists Non-profit organization exhibit, and the TAA Juried Theme Show. Get those creative juices flowing and make plans to enter some great shows this coming season. And don’t forget our two parties, the Holiday party, and the end of year Party, dates to be announced. Anyone willing to host the Holiday Party in their home? Everyone, please notice that this is the first issue of the Artline produced by our new editor, Vic Delnore. Fantastic job, Vic. Kudos too to Jennifer Lycke, the Artline webmaster. You are reading this issue because of her expertise in the ethereal realm of the internet. Mary Lee Ruff had a one-person exhibition at the Peninsula Fine Art Center June 10 - July 11 entitled 'Pencil to Paper: Drawings by Mary Lee Ruff'. The exhibition included 47 works in pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, and drypoint prints.

Ann M. Moore just returned from a three week trip to Italy, laden with new ideas for paintings. Her large painting, "The Pride of Bologna," was accepted for the Halls of Art exhibition at the Hampton Conference Center. Ann also had two oil paintings, "Free Day: Coast of Senegal" and "Goree Island, Senegal," selected for this fall's Peninsula Fine Arts Center Biennial show.

We support, develop and promote visual arts in Hampton Roads.

Catherine Mein's painting Transformation in Time IV (pictured above) has been selected as a finalist in the Abstract/Experimental category of The Artist's Magazine 27th Annual Art Competition. As a finalist her name will be featured in the December 2010 issue of the magazine. Also her painting Transformation in Time III won 4th Place in the Virginia Watercolor Society Show.
