Scouts go Solar
Issue no. 4: August - December 2018
Below you can find, which solar activities took place during the second half
of 2018. Thanks a lot to everyone, who helped spreading Scouts go Solar
and who taught various age or target groups, how to use solar energy for
themselves, their community and the environment in 2018! It has been a
delight to cooperate with you! From Africa to the Asia-Pacific Region, Latin
America to Europe- even more and more Scouts are joining us and are
going solar. Have fun reading about the fabulous and diverse activities in

August
Scouts go Solar at 5th International Jamboree in South Korea
From the 2nd-3rd of August 2018, Scouts go Solar modules have been
presented by the Solar Ambassador Bernando De Leon at the Global De-
velopment Village of the 5th International Patrol Jamboree in Gangwon-do.
The smallest version of the solar suitcase with a USB-port and LED lamps
was demonstrated and sunglasses, solar art and sundials were being
made. Like that, Scouts from South Korea as well as from Indonesia and
Vietnam could experience the possibilities of Scouts go Solar.
Scouts go Solar activities at the Central America Cub Scouts Rally in Mexico
On the 2nd of August 2018,
Scouts go Solar activities
took place at the Central
America Cub Scouts Rally in
Orizaba. Martin Rosario and
Andrea Aguilar were display-
ing the solar fountain, cook-
ers and gadgets and were
explaining the concept of
photovoltaics. Afterwards,
the young Scouts excitedly
played solar car races and
produced their own piece of
solar art with wooden pop-
sicles and the sun.
First Scouts go Solar Information Stand in Botswana
On the 13th of August, the
newly trained Solar Ambassa-
dor Onkarabile Jackson rea-
lised the first Scouts go Solar
information stand in Botswana
and answered the questions of
276 visitors. The solar foun-
tain, charger, radio as well as
lamps were being showcased
and diverse solar activities
were being explained. As an
effective showcase example,
the DIY Copenhagen Cooker
was used to serve solar coffee
to the visitors. Most of all, we
are very happy that the
Minister of Youth, Sport Deve-
lopment and Culture stopped by and informed himself personally about the Scouts go Solar project
and its possibilities.
First Scouts go Solar Workshop in Botswana
On the 18th of August, the first Scout go Solar workshop in Botswana was realised by our Solar Ambassador Onkarabile Jackson. It was conducted under the theme “Safe Space for Youth” in the
Mother Theresa Resource Centre in Francistown and involved children from underprivileged families. The Scouts were introduced to the useful solar suitcase, which holds LED lamps and a USB port and thus functions like a small power station. They were making their own sun-glasses and played with the solar fountain and solar lamps and toys. A local Scout group helped with the realisation of the workshop and was so inspired by the Scouts go Solar activities that they signed a memo-randum of agreement with the Inter-national Rotary Club to bring the games to other resources centres.
Scouts go Solar Workshops in 11 schools
in the Chonburi province of Thailand
During the 20th-22nd of August 2018, Scouts go Solar
activities took place in 11 schools for a total of 310
Scouts in the Chonburi province of Thailand. The
focus was put on solar cooking, for which two para-
bolic solar cookers were being used as well as
smaller solar box cookers. Consequently, the Scouts
could experiment with the different cookers and see
that they can simply cook their meals with solar
energy.
Introduction of Scouts go Solar to Bhutan
From the 21st-25th of August, the Solar Ambassador
Bernando De Leon was leading a Scouts go Solar
workshop at the Asia-Pacific-Region Workshop on Envi-
ronmental Education in Thimphu in Bhutan. On this occa-
sion, he gave the Bhutan Scouts Association a Scouts go
Solar Starter Kit to hold their first workshops with.

Scouts go Solar Training at the BASE Centre in Goiás, Brazil
On the 1st of September, a Scouts go Solar training was realised for the
staff of the Scout Centre “Base Escoteira de Pesquisa e Educação Am-
biental” (BASE) in Goiás by our newly-trained Solar Ambassador Eduardo
Lima. Apart from being introduced to renewable energies, the staff was
soldering LED lamps, getting to know the solar fountain and solar spinning
disc, playing the solar grasshopper race, creating solar art and building
Copenhagen Cookers, with which they were easily frying eggs afterwards.
Thanks to the training, the Scouts go Solar badge for Scouts of all ages
will be offered at the BASE Scout Centre from now on.
Solar Cookers for Indigenous Mexican Community through Scouts go Solar
On the 1st of September, 3 parabolic cookers
were being distributed by the Solar Am-
bassador Abelardo Castillo Rosas and his
team of trained Scout leaders to the poor
community of La Cuesta, which had been hit
by the recent earthquake. Like that, 200
inhabitants- of which 120 are children- are
now enabled to cook for free without having
to purchase gas bottles. In a workshop, the
team was showing the inhabitants how to use
the cookers. A workshop for the children, in
which they learned about the usefulness of
solar energy by playing with the solar fountain
and solar toys, was also realised.
Scouts go Solar at the “100 Years of Rover Scouting Celebration”, Philippines
On the 1st of September, Scouts go
Solar activities for over one hundred
Scouts took place during the “100 Years of Rover Scouting Celebration” on Luzon. The Scouts were introduced
to the smallest version of the solar
suitcase and were creating their own
piece of solar art. They were also play-
ing the energy card game, which
showed them how high their energy
consumption really is and how they can
reduce it easily.
Scouts go Solar at the South Regional Level
Skill Development Training Course in India
On the 2nd of September, the Bharat Scouts and Guides
were participating in Scouts go Solar activities at the
South Regional Level Skill Development Training Course
in Bangalore in the state of Karanataka. An explanation
about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and
the World Scout Environment Programme were given
and the power of solar energy was experienced through
competing in solar car races, for example.
Scouts go Solar Event in the Kaprálův Mlýn Scout Centre in the Czech Republic
On the 2nd of September, the Scouts of the Kaprálův mlýn Scout Centre organised an event for the public. Over 150
people –mostly consisting of families- participated and
experienced many solar activities. The solar installation
of the centre, which guarantees a smooth internet con-
nection, was shown and explained and solar coffee and
tea was being made. Children and adults alike had great
fun playing the grasshopper race.
Scouts go Solar Activities for Scouts with Special Needs at the Pakistan Boy
Scout Association in Islamabad, Pakistan
On the 7th of September, a Scouts Orientation Activity for Scouts with special needs has been realised
at the headquarters of the Pakistan Boy Scout Association in Islamabad. They were introduced to the
components of small and complex solar systems. Soon a whole Scouts go Solar training for Scouts
with special needs will follow at the PBSA.
First Scouts go Solar Workshop in Macedonia
On the 15th of September, our newly-trained Solar Ambassadors Stevan Poposki and Igor Stanojkov were launching the first Scouts go Solar workshop in Skopje in Macedonia. They were realising many Scouts go Solar act- ivities for the Scout Group Braka Miladinovci such as produc- ing solar art, building a Copenhagen Cooker, which reached up to 100 degrees, to cook a vegetable soup with as well as experimenting with solar gadgets such as portable ventilators and the solar fountain. Additionally, they built a solar dryer for fruit, with which they successfully dried dozens of apples, which would have gone to waste.
Scouts go Solar at a Workshop on Environment Education in Karachi, India
From the 27th-30th of September, the Sindh Boy Scouts Associa-tion was organising a Workshop on Environment Education in Scouting with Scouts go Solar activities at the Gulistan-E-Scouts Training Centre in Kara-chi. The effective usage of the sun in everyday life was explain-ed. Additionally, solar equipment such as cookers, lamps, foun-tains and chargers were being experimented with and solar art was being created by the partici-pants.
Scouts go Solar at the 82nd Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines
On the 30th of September, the Scouts go Solar Roadshow of the Solar Ambassador Bernando De Leon was chosen as a module for the celebration of the 82nd Anniver-sary of the Boy Scouts of the Philip-pines (BSP) in Manila. Together with his team of Ariel Manalo, Janne Mari Asuncion, Danilo Bocalere and Khia Pagdanganan, over 100 Scouts and Scouters participated in Scouts go Solar activities and got to know solar equipment like different cookers and the solar suitcase with
LED lamps and a USB port as well as solar gadgets like lamps, radios, ventilators, chargers and several toys such as mini cars, grasshoppers and beetles.

Scouts go Solar Workshop at the Sindh Model School in Karachi in Pakistan

test their creative skills by
making their own solar
art.
Lessons on Solar Cooking at a Solar Education Event in Taiwan
In 2018, the environment education in Taiwan was concentrating on solar education. During an
education event on the 20th of October, children were introduced to Scouts go Solar and could
experience how to cook with a parabolic solar cooker themselves. Together, eggs and sausages were
prepared and enjoyed thoroughly. To show them how to produce their own DIY solar cooker with little
means and cook themselves at home, box cookers were being built. As another fun experiment, they
were burning holes into black paper with the help of magnifying glasses.
First Scouts go Solar Training in Malaysia
On the 20th of October, the newly-trained Solar Ambassador Lau Hooi Lin finalised her first Scouts go Solar training for Cub Scout leaders at the Institute of Teacher Education on the Penang Campus in
Malaysia. Over two days, 36 Cub Scout leaders, 3 lecturers and 4 guests were informed about the possibilities of Scouts go Solar. Beforehand, the Solar Ambassador Bernando De Leon was kindly delivering the smallest version of the solar suitcase with LED lamps and a USB port, which was sponsored by Solafrica. During the training, the par-ticipants built their own Copenhagen Cookers, cooked with the parabolic so-lar cooker and constructed a solar spinning disc to create pictures with the sun. They also tested their competition skills during solar car races, solar insect races and the solar sumo game, which Ms Lau Hooi Lin is the inventor of.
Scouts go Solar at the 5th “CLR KAB-O-REE” in Palayan City on the Phillipines
On the 27th of October, the KAB Scouts learned about
different sources of clean and renewable energy and its
connection to climate action while having fun with Scouts
go Solar activities at the 5th CLR KAB-O-REE in Palayan
City. They were introduced to the better usage of the sun
through the coloured bottle game, created their own solar
art and sunglasses and experienced solar cookers and
toys.
November
Scouts go Solar at the National Rover-Ranger Moot in India On the 4th of November, Scouts go Solar activities have been realised at the National Rover-Ranger
Moot 2018 at the Sri Sathyasai Institution in Muddenahalli in the Chikballapur District of the State of
Karnataka. Rovers and Rangers between 15 and 25 years were informed about the effective usage
of solar energy and could, for example, experience the solar car race and solar art.
Scouts go Solar during the 49th Provincial Jamboree in Palayan City, Philippines
From the 5th-9th of November, the team of Solar Ambassador Bernando De Leon, the “Brighton Venturers”, realised a Solar Road-show at the Camp of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines in Palayan City during the 49th Provincial Jamboree. For about 3’800 Scouts,
Scouts go Solar was presented as a Better World Framework module. To demonstrate, how easily solar energy can be used, the smallest version of the solar suitcase, which has been produced by Erwin Villanue- va from the Brighton Venturers, was presented.
Young Cub Scouts receive Scouts go Solar Badge in Karachi, Pakistan
From the 9th–11th of No-vember, 400 Scouts and 50 Scout leaders participated in Scouts go Solar activities at the Gulistan-E-Scouts Training in Karachi. After they had been informed about the power of the sun, been introduced to solar gadgets such as the solar fountain and been playing solar games, a Scouts go Solar Badge was awarded.
Scouts go Solar Workshop at the Gaborone Senior Secondary School in
Botswana
On the 18th of November, the Solar Ambassador Onkarabile Jackson realised the 1st Scouts go Solar workshop for an astonishing number of 281 Cub Scouts and 63 explorers at the Gaborone Senior Se-
condary School. This happen-ed during the launching of Scouting for all schools, which was realised by the Minister of Basic Education and the Bots-wana Scout Association. The participants were informed about the possibilities of solar energy and Scouts go Solar and were, for example, frying eggs with the DIY Copenhagen Cooker, making their own sun-glasses and playing solar dart.
Scouts go Solar Showcase at the Biggest Scout Event in Mexico
On the 21st of November, a
Scouts go Solar showcase was
realised at the biggest Scout
event in Mexico- the Mexican
Scout Expression and Art
Encounter- by the Solar Am-
bassadors Abelardo Castillo
Rosas and Marisol Peralta as
well as the active “solar force” member Andrea Aguilar. Of the
9’200 Scouts from all around
the country, which gathered at
Guadalajara in the state of
Jalisco, around 2’000 Scouts
were introduced to Scouts go
Solar and could experience
many solar activities.
Scouts go Solar Workshop at the She's Camp in Islamabad, Pakistan
On the 24th of November, a
Scouts go Solar workshop was
launched at the She's Camp at
the National Headquarters of
the Pakistan Boy Scouts Asso-
ciation (PBSA) in Islamabad. In
it, the Girl Scouts were in-
formed about Scouts go Solar
and getting to know solar
equipment such as lamps,
chargers, batteries, ventilators
and DIY cookers. Additionally,
they were cooking with the
parabolic solar cooker, creat-
ing solar art and competing in the solar grass- hopper race by reflecting the sunlight from mirrors onto the solar panel of the toy.

Scouts constructed a solar
suitcase and a solar spinning
disc, built Copenhagen cook-
ers, soldered solar LED lamps
and made sunglasses among
many other solar experiments.
Dezember
Scouts go Solar at the National Assembly of the Scouts of Argentina
At the beginning of December, the Scouts go Solar project was being presented by Maia Honczaryk and Dino Carini at the National Assembly of the Scouts of Argentina. Many Scouts from different parts of the country were interested in the effective usage of solar energy and eager to carry out the different Scouts go Solar activities. Amongst many ac-tivities, the coloured bottle game was being played and DIY sundials and a portable solar campfire as well as solar chargers were being showcased. We are very happy to warmly welcome Argentina into our Scouts go Solar community!
First Scouts go Solar Training in Botswana
The first Scouts go Solar training of the Botswana Scouts Associa-tion was realised by the Solar Ambassador Onkarabile Jack-son in the village of Vukwi. From the 1st-4th of December, 14 Scout leaders from across the country and one member from the community were being trained by soldering solar LED lamps, building DIY Copen-hagen cookers and making sun-
dials. They got to know about the technical construction of the
solar suitcase and the solar power banks through presenta-
tions and feedback talks.
Scouts go Solar activity at the Alyabad Scout Unit in Karachi in Pakistan
On the 4th of December, a Scouts go Solar activity was organised by the Alyabad Scout Unit of
Karachi. They were getting to know about Scouts go Solar and its activities and were focusing on
creating solar art to show the power of the sun.
Solar Christmas Tree lights up house of our Mexican
Solar Ambassador
For the festive season, the Mexican Solar Ambassador Abelardo Castillo
Rosas constructed his own solar Christmas tree. He powered the light
chain with a usual 30-watt solar panel and a battery. Like that, he could
create a beautiful, festive and ecological Christmas illumination, which
lasted him and his family for many hours each day.

On the 21st of December, Scouts go Solar
activities were organised at the National
Headquarters of the Pakistan Boy Scouts
Association in Islamabad. Rover Scouts
were informed about how to power lamps
with solar energy and were experiencing
solar parabolic and box cookers.
Scouts go Solar Information Stand in Pakistan
From the 20th-26th of December, a team of
the Balochistan Boy Scouts Association was
realising Scouts go Solar activities for the 3rd
Sindh Rover Moot in Karachi. At a Scouts go
Solar information stand, they were showcas-
ing different solar equipment like ventilators,
chargers, lamps, toys, radios, batteries and
solar fountains.
Scouts go Solar at the Better World Model Camp in Islamabad in Pakistan
During the Scouts go Solar Badge Programme at the Better World Model Camp of the National Head-quarters of the Pakistan Boy Scouts Association in Islamabad, over 80 Rover Scouts from all over
Pakistan successfully re-ceived their Scouts go Solar badge. The realised solar activities were: mak-ing sunglasses, creating solar art, cooking noodles with a solar cooker, sol-dering multi LED lamps and having group discus-sions about the “usage of solar energy in daily life” as well as getting to know solar equipment for ev-eryday use.
