Once each year we meet to honor our Medal of Merit Winner and salute our Volunteer of the Year. As we go to print, the selection committee is deliberating the Medal of Merit Winner, so look for the announcement of this year’s recipient on our Facebook page and on our website. We are pleased to announce the 2013 Volunteer of the Year is Karl House. Karl was featured in the April newsletter’s Volunteer Spotlight. We salute Karl’s dedication and tenacity in helping researchers from all over the world find the information that they need in our Maritime Research Center. Our program for this meeting features veteran shipwright & commercial fisherman Brian Johnson who will present the work he has done rebuilding the shallow- draft salmon seiner THELMA C for the Kodiak Maritime Museum. PSMHS 2013Board of Governors Your Society is not a solo voyager through today’s troubled waters, but has

the support of several partners. Our long-time major partner is, of course, the Museum of History and Industry. MOHAI provides us with space for our research center at their Georgetown facility. Also we jointly curate the McCurdy Family Maritime Gallery in the new museum at South Lake Union.(It is a fabulous museum if you have not yet been to it.)

We also sit on the Pacific Northwest Maritime Heritage Council. This is a group of maritime museums and heritage vessel owners from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. We meet quarterly to discuss issues of common interest, share ideas, and develop joint projects. The Council maintains a list of maritime museums on the website graciously hosted by Three Sheets Northwest on its Heritage page.

A recent joint project is with the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, owners of Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain. We have agreed to offer an award for the best maritime history project at the annual state high school History Day competition sponsored by the Washington State Historical Society.

In the planning stages is an event this winter honoring the Alaska fishing fleets based on Puget Sound. This is a joint project of MOHAI, The Center for Wooden Boats, and the Society.

We continue to explore new projects with our fellow maritime heritage organizations. We all benefit from this collaboration and it allows us to multiply the benefits to the Society.
