If you are aware of any families who are planning to enrol at Playford Primary School next year, or you are planning to enrol your child/ren elsewhere in 2018, please contact the Front Office as soon as possible. A reminder that if parents / carers have any educational issues they would like leadership to consider in regard to their child’s placement in 2018, they are requested to put them in writing and forward to the Principal by Friday 27th October. The main criterion we consider with placement is making sure classes are as balanced as possible. This includes gender balance, student numbers in each year level within a class, behaviour issues, friendships (based on student and staff information) and previous class placements etc. It must be remembered these are requests and will be considered along with the above criteria in the class placement process, therefore they cannot be guaranteed. Please note that requests for specific staff members will not be considered. SPORTS DAY TEAMS Students have been placed into a team ready for Sports Day next term, which will be on Thursday 2nd November. The tabloid events on the day mean we have 4 equal ability teams in each class. Because of the format it is not possible to place family members into the same team. If you do not have a top in your child’s team colour we will have ribbons on the day that students can wear. Parents/carers do not have to purchase a coloured top just for Sports Day. SUMMER UNIFORM The holidays are a good time to get organised for the upcoming warmer weather. Please check that summer uniforms still fit and in particular that shorts have not become very short! Shoes for summer still need to be suitable for running and sports. Strappy sandals with heels look nice but inhibit a child’s ability to be involved in active play and fitness lessons and therefore are not appropriate for school. Remember when you are out shopping that plain navy pants and shorts are required - no stripes or logos and no jeans. We have an excellent range of good quality, competitively priced uniforms at school so perhaps check here first.

ATTENDANCE

Playford Primary students have missed 10172.5 days of school this year.

1060.5 of those are unexplained. We understand that at times students are too ill to attend school, but please give

us a call on 8284 3065 or send a text message to 0416 906 281, so we know that he/she is ok. Thank you!

Congratulations to the following students that have no had any early dismissals, late arrivals or days off this term.

Material and Services Charges

2018 Under the current legislation, we are obliged to inform the parent community of our school charges for 2018. The charges have been approved by the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) and will be tabled at the next Governing Council meeting. The proposal is for the M&S charges to be $235 per child. The cost is in line with the 2018 school card/government assisted student payment of $235. The recommendation is for the proposed charges to be accepted for 2018. There has been an increase of $4 which is to cover the yearly CPI increase. The legislation requires notice to be given to the school community for consultation and feedback. If anyone would like to raise any issues or discuss the proposal they can do this by attending the next Governing Council meeting on Tuesday 31st October at 7.00pm at Playford Primary School.

PEACE POSTER COMPETITION

Congratulations to Abi who has won the school entry for the Lions Club’s International Peace Poster Competition for 2017 with an fantastic piece of art.

“I drew this poster to represent the theme ‘every person holds a piece of hope, happiness and peace no matter what happens; past, present or future.’ This represents peace because it shows what happiness and bright ideas can create. It brings every person together and that is the future of peace.”

Posters are judged on originality, artistic merit and the expression of the theme. The quality of the posters made it very difficult for the judges to choose a winner. Ebony’s poster will be judged at the district judging against other winning posters from schools within our district by the Lions Club of Elizabeth.

FUNDRAISING NEWS The Fundraising Committee would like to hold a Sausage Sizzle on Sports Day, Thursday 2nd November. This is completely dependant on whether we can get enough volunteers. If you are prepared to support your child’s class for an hour, either serving or cooking, please contact the Front Office. We require at least one volunteer per class to be able to offer the sausage sizzle to students.

Sports Day Raffle: During Week 1, Term 4, Raffle Books will be sent home which will be drawn on Sports Day. Prizes include sports equipment, with a fantastic 1st prize; a bike. If you do not wish to receive a Raffle Book please contact the Front Office as soon as possible.

BANKSIA UNIT VISIT CLELAND

On Thursday 31st August,

Banksia Unit went on an

excursion to Cleland

Wildlife Park. We have

been studying Australian

animals and their habitats

for Geography.

We had a wonderful day

with sunshine and

beautiful scenery. The

children thoroughly

enjoyed seeing and

interacting with the

animals. They patted and

fed many of them. The

potoroos were very

popular.

The education officers

were very impressed with the

behaviour and knowledge shown by our

students.

A big thank you to our

parent helpers too!

Child Protection week was from the 3rd September – 9th September. Playford Primary recognised Child Protection Week in a number of different ways.

Classes were involved in a range of activities organised by teachers to support the Child Protection Curriculum. For example, selected books were available to read to students during their library time that support messages of how to identify feelings, keep safe and improve wellbeing.

Whole school assembly organised by D01. “In Week 7 D01 hosted a whole school assembly. We presented our 3D paper buildings, flip books and posters about our chosen Australian animals. Constable Riley came in to talk about cyber safety and Mrs Selway spoke about being street smart. G01 role played what would happen if you didn’t cross on the crossing and if you ran on the pavers. Mrs Gencarelli and the choir also performed ‘We Are The World’. We felt nervous but the assembly went well and we were proud of ourselves.”

Visit from Community Police with a focus on bullying catering appropriately to the different age groups. Rosana, Jemimah, Nadia and Lara from C01 (Yr 6/7) reported on the Upper Primary session. “On the 1st and 11th of September, all classes from Playford attended a discussion about bullying. The host was Police Officer Cassie, who has experienced bullying first hand. She talked all about the different types of bullying and how serious they are. She also mentioned the consequences of being charged. Cassie told stories about how she had to deal with kids and young adults who were bullying and being bullied. She finished off the discussion with a very emotional statement about the effects of bullying. The presentation was very well put together and informative. She included lots of detail as we are older and more mature.”

Evening Parent Information Session on ‘Street Smart’ and ‘Cyber-Bullying’. Thank you to Constable Troy Harrison, Di Scott and Michaela Selway for organising the event and answering questions. The evening was very enlightening and discussed how to help keep children safe when walking to and from school and using online computer games and apps such as Roblox, Musical.ly, Snapchat, Instragram and Facebook. Thank you to the families that attended on the night.

CHILD PROTECTION WEEK

Congratulations

To Mitchell (C07) who received the SANFL mini leaguer of the year 2017. Mitchell played mini league at Adelaide Oval at the SANFL grand final. Even though Mitchell hasn't been able to play all season, due to breaking his arm, he has still supported his team at Angle Vale Football Club by helping out at training and watching his team play. Well done Mitchell.

Congratulations

To Ethan (C02) and Jasmine (C06) who recently performed as part of an ensemble at the Festival of Music Concert in the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. It was an amazing experience that both students will never forget. Well done. Both Ethan and Jasmine attend instrumental music lessons at Playford International College.

E05 & E06 VISIT THE ADELAIDE ZOO

On Thursday the 7th of September, E05 and E06

went on an excursion to Adelaide Zoo. We had an

education session with Angela who spoke to us

about habitats and animal adaptations and then we

had some time to explore the zoo. We worked in

small groups and used iPads to take photos and

create mind maps about what we were learning.

Everyone had a fun and exciting day and we would

like to thank the lovely volunteers that joined us on

the day.

BACKPACKS 4 SA KIDS This year, the Recycling Committee decided to use

the money raised from recycling to help a charity

called Backpacks 4 SA Kids. This amazing charity

helps children from ages 0-18 who find themselves

in a position where they are removed and unable to

return to their own home. Some of these children

may have been placed in foster care or perhaps

have moved to a women’s shelter or refuge. Often,

they move in only the clothes that they have on. In Term 1, we provided a

complete backpack for a girl, size 7. In term 2, we completed one for a boy,

size 14. This term, we have just completed another backpack for a girl, size

10. Staff have also been working on completing a backpack and have now

completed one for a boy size 10. Next term, we will be aiming to complete

another girl’s backpack for a girl aged 5. If you are interested in learning

more about the fabulous work Backpacks4SA Kids do, check out their

Facebook page.

AUSTRALIAN READING HOUR

The Australian Reading Hour was held across the nation on Thursday 14th September from 6-7pm. The initiative is designed to encourage all Australians to get into the healthy habit of reading for enjoyment and in particular to enjoy reading for longer than ten minutes a day with your children. Our Campus Resource Centre opened its doors for the evening with a fantastic attendance of around 60 people. Families found comfy spaces to snuggle in with plenty of stories to share. Children were given a commemorative book mark, superhero sticker (reading is our superpower!) and a mini poster of ‘The Rights of the Reader’ illustrated by the fabulous Quentin Blake.

Lots of books were laid out on tables to fit our Book Week theme of ‘Escape to Everywhere’ including space books, microscopic world, Aboriginal Dreaming stories and ocean life. Many classic and popular books were on display with their complementary toy like ‘Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy’, ‘Pig the Pug’ and ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’ We have been eagerly watching 5 caterpillars create their cocoons in a vivarium as part of our insects display. There were plenty of butterfly life cycle books on hand to help us learn about that mysterious process. Did you know that caterpillars turn to liquid inside the cocoon before transforming into butterflies or moths? We learnt that from books! Our TV screen featured book trailer advertisements for new books that were selected by students in our Library Civics and Services. The children in G05 and G06 used the iMovie app to make the trailers. Thank you to all the families who took part in this special occasion. By all accounts it was a popular evening with many requests for more like it.

ASTHMA PLANS, PUFFERS & MEDICATION Is your child’s asthma plan up to date? Plans need to be reviewed annually. Please take the opportunity in the holidays to visit the doctor and update any plans if necessary. All students with asthma plans lodged at Student Services must have their own puffers and spacers at school. Junior primary students who require assistance with administering their asthma medication need to go to Student Services. If your child requires medication (including paracetamol) during school hours a medication plan, completed by your child’s doctor, needs to be lodged at Student Services. All medication needs to be in a clearly labelled pharmacy container. All medication plans need to be reviewed annually by the child’s doctor.

Please note it is a DECD policy that we do not keep paracetamol on site for student or staff use. If your child requires this as a ‘one off’ you will be asked to either collect your child or bring in the paracetamol to administer it to your child yourself. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Students attend lessons during school hours and must be transported to and from Playford International College by a parent/carer.
