Academic Endeavour Dinner with the HeadmistressLast Tuesday, a group of Junior pupils were invited to a dinner with the Headmistress in recognition of their recent academic effort. One pupil from each tutor group in Year 5 and 6 was selected. They were treated to delicious canapés and drinks on the garden terrace, followed by a sumptuous three-course meal. The interesting conversation included topics such as the Fibonacci sequence, robotics, brain surgery, and Surrealist art. It was wonderful to see everyone enthuse about their interests and be rewarded for their fantastic achievements. Well done to Lily, Georgina, Maisie, Jack, Pierre, Jamie and Lucy.“It was a brilliant evening, and really nice to hear about everyone else’s interests” – Lily“I really enjoyed it. The food was delicious!” – Lucy‘I was invited to dinner at Mrs Shayler’s house, and had strawberry punch, melon with Parma ham, chicken and green beans, and for dessert the biggest ice cream sundae I’ve ever seen. The children sat around the table with some of the teachers and we chatted about the things we enjoy doing and the sports we play. We talked about what makes a sport a sport (heart rate going above a certain level), the jobs that robots could never do (PE teacher and nurse), and if money were no object, what we would do (have law lessons at school and more shelters for the homeless). It was an excellent evening’. - Georgina

EAL Pupils ExcelTwo EAL pupils, Kevin and Jack, arrived at Millfield Prep after Easter. They have both been working hard this half-term learning about different kinds of animals. After choosing one animal each to investigate further, they learnt lots of interesting facts. This has resulted in two great pieces of work to display in the EAL classroom.Mrs Dumontroty“There are fifteen kinds of flying squirrel. Flying squirrels can’t really fly, they glide. They have skin from their hands to their feet. It looks like wings. They jump from tree to tree. They have a good sense of smell and they eat fruit, nuts, seeds and sometimes bird eggs. Flying squirrels are nocturnal animals, so in the day time they sleep. Why? Because other wild animals will eat the flying squirrels.” - Kevin Wang“Snowy owls live in North America and North Asia, where it is very cold. Snowy owls are mostly white. They have lots of feathers because they need to keep warm. They have yellow eyes. They eat mice and small mammals. Most owls hunt at night to find food but the snowy owl is different because they catch food in the day. Snowy owls make their nests on the ground because there are no trees in the Arctic. This is very dangerous for the baby owl chicks because other birds try to catch them.” - Jack Liu

Romania AppealTim Kelly, our caretaker, will once again be travelling to Romania this summer to visit the children of the Alexandra Residential Centre, Onesti. Tim would be very grateful for any donations of good quality, clean, nearly new clothes and gifts for the children who range from babies to adults. Please can donations be handed into Reception. Many thanks for your support, the children really do appreciate all of the donations.Tim Kelly

Boarding Life

The boys challenged Hollies to a game of rounders on Wednesday evening. We played for the Hollies/Chestnut cup. Confidence was low after a first innings score of 0 but the boys picked up as the game progressed and the game ended as a draw (but the boys did have one more innings!) A lovely way to spend an evening with ice cream to finish as well. We hope to give the girls more of a game next time! Or was it chivalry? @MPS_Chestnut

Champion girls needed no encouragement to get into the spirit of celebrating the Royal Wedding this week. The common room was a hive of activity with bunting, colouring and cutting, plus there was a competition to design the dress the girls thought the bride might wear. Thanks to Mrs Smith for all your hard work!On Wednesday the girls took advantage of the sunshine and headed outside for a barbecue. @championmps

Boarders Multi-Activity DayBoarders enjoyed a multi-activity day at the weekend. Everyone made the most of the fantastic weather, and the multitude of activities included climbing, playing volleyball and ball games, riding bikes and scooters, watching cricket and of course, relaxing. Mr Stickley took a group to Charmouth for crabbing and fossil hunting, and Mrs Blasdale and the Juniors spent a lovely afternoon at Somerton’s May Fair. The jam-packed day finished with a delicious barbeque for all the houses, some local residents, and visiting ducks!

The girls were treated to some Royal festivities on Saturday afternoon to mark the occasion of the Royal Wedding. There was a royal waterslide, welly throwing, hobby horses and an afternoon treat of scones and jam. The girls also enjoyedsome traditional fish and chips for their supper. @MPS_Hollies

The boys have enjoyed the sunny evenings and have been outside playing cricket. @BerewallHouse

Ski Team Compete in the South West ChampionshipsOn Sunday, the Millfield Prep Ski Team took part in the South West Championships at Gloucester Ski and Snowboard Centre. We were practising our runs by 9.30am, and each of our 12 racers had three timed runs. Only one member of the team had raced on a dry slope before, so the rest had to translate their ski racing from the snow to the dry slope. It was a tough competition as we were up against British Champions and competitors who train and compete on dry slopes! Our team learnt a huge amount, and the experience gave them the determination to put in more hours on the slopes, as even for our experienced snow racers, dry slope racing takes some getting used to.The first Junior back for Millfield Prep was Ed Rose, and Fleur Kingsford, both with three clear runs. The first senior (11-18) was Harry Black and Izaro Viguera De Haro. Tian Quaile won the best novice in the Year 7/8 category, so we returned with a trophy! This event was not about winning but learning and working as a team. A huge thank you to all parents who came to watch.

Swimmers Compete in Regional ChampionshipsOver the last two weekends, the Millfield Swim Team competed in the South West Regional Championships at Hengrove and Millfield. These Championships were the pinnacle of the year, and only the top swimmers in the country qualify. We put forward 38 athletes, the largest number of qualifiers in our history. Several swimmers put in a fantastic effort over the weekend, posting personal best times and supporting their teammates. Special mention goes to David O’Loughlin who broke the school record for the 50m backstroke with a time of 28.86. TennisLast Wednesday, 64 girls from Year 7 and 8 took part in Road to Wimbledon, a junior tennis tournament. Everyone competed with great enthusiasm and helped organise matches on their court, and Francesca Davis oversaw the whole event. The following girls reached the quarter-finals: Flo Johnson, Suza Jolliffe, Asunta Sanchez Moreu, Phoebe Cole, Lucy Meyer, Bella Banaszkiewicz, Olivia Parr and Ale De Orue Rosillo. Olivia was the eventual winner after playing Ale in the final, and has earnt a place in the County Finals of the national event in July. This bank holiday weekend, four mixed teams will represent Millfield in the IAPS Tennis Tournament. The event is hosted by Millfield, and Niamh McLoughlin, Lucy Champion, Wills House and Charlie Ruffell will represent Somerset in the U10 County Cup competition. We wish them, and all our other players competing over half term, the very best of luck.Well done to the U12 Girls tennis team (pictured above and right) who beat Perrott Hill on Wednesday 7-2.

CricketOn Saturday, the Senior Development Squad played King’s Hall School in the IAPS Cup. King’s Hall batted first after winning the toss, and of their 25 overs, they reached 146-5. Freddie Turnell was pick of the bowlers with two wickets, and in response the chase came down to the last over, with ten runs needed. George Timmins hit a massive six with the first ball of his innings, to win the game with two balls to spare and five wickets down. Well done boys, it was a very exciting match with lots of positive moments.

On Sunday, the Senior Development Squad played Somerset U13s on a fantastic wicket. Somerset batted first, and posted a score of 216 of their 40 overs. There was fantastic bowling from Dominic Kelly, Ollie Harrison and George Bruce, and an impressive catch from Charlie Morgan-Hughes. With the score 22-3, it was always going to be a hard chase, but Freddie Turnell (32) and Bobby Mulvey batted very sensibly to put on a score of 102 of 18.4 overs. Dominic (43) and Bobby then put on a 85 runs in only 10 overs, to leave George Timmins to win the game with Bobby. Bobby end up with outstanding innings of 113 not out of 124 balls. This was an amazing win against a county team, well done boys you did the school proud.

IAPS Sailing RegattaThe IAPS Sailing Regatta started with a light breeze and a slow start - our sailors struggled to gain places in the fickle wind, using big movements rather than the delicate positioning needed to handle the conditions. Zara Harrison and Isabella Mayman were placed 17th. After the first and second race, the wind picked up to a perfect breeze, and our sailors came into their own with some good results. Unfortunately it was too little, too late for Grace Davey and Katy Lowe, having picked up a 12th and 13th, they came away with 15th overall. In the RS Zest class, Josh Harrison and Stasha Clark posted a very respectable 8th and 7th in the light wind, followed by a 4th and 5th, leaving them with a highly commendable 6th place overall! Fantastic focus and skill. A great day had by all.

Swimming GalaThe new date for the Junior Swimming Gala is Tuesday 19 June. Year 3 - 1.30pmYear 4 - 2pmYear 5 - 2.30pm

AthleticsAthletics has reached the halfway point of the season. The Juniors have had three great Friday meetings against Wells, West Chinnock and Warminster. These have all been in sunny weather and we hope this luck will hold! Our senior athletes have competed across the county. We are looking ahead to County Champions, and both the boys’ and girls’ teams are through to the regional final of the English Schools’ Cup. Our athletes have worked hard and achieved many new personal bests that they will try to improve in the second half of the season. Thanks to all the staff who have helped throughout the term.

Team of the WeekLast week, ‘Team of the Week’ was postponed due to a fire drill. Therefore last week’s award is presented to the U13B boys’ cricket team, who fought for their victory against Hazlegrove. Well done boys!

This week...Another busy week to end a very bright and sunny half term. I hope you all have a lovely break. Mrs Blasdale

Celebration for the Royal WeddingThe EYFS celebrated the Royal Wedding in their own, unique style! We had our own Harry and Meghan - Joshua and Isobel - so we set about organising their wedding. Button holes were prepared, crowns and tiaras were adorned with gems, pictures were coloured and sandwiches assembled. Noah presided over the ceremony, Hugo was best man and ring bearer and Fizzy and Rosa were the flower girls who accompanied Isobel down the aisle. After the main event, the delicious cake from Pembleton Bakery was cut and the reception was held in our beautifully sunny garden. What a special way for the children to mark this wonderful occasion.

Diary DatesFriday 25 May • Reception Assembly, Pre-Prep Hall, 11.30am• Half term begins at 12 noon for all pupils

Reception Make Pizzas in Pizza ExpressReception class visited Pizza Express and made their own margherita pizzas. We squashed and stretched the dough to fit our trays, then spread out the tomato paste and sprinkled on the mozzarella. We then added some oregano, pepper and a drizzle of olive oil before they were baked in the very hot ovens. Some basil leaves were the final ingredient. We took the pizzas back to school and ate them for lunch - they were delicious! We all really enjoyed being a chef for the morning.

Year 1 and 2 Discover MinibeastsYear 1 have been busy looking for minibeasts, under rocks and logs and in trees and flowers. We discovered lots of interesting minibeasts that we examined with our magnifying glasses. Hester discovered a centipede which was a fascinating sight.

Playground ToysLast year’s Reception and Year 2 helped design playground toys with pupils from Millfield. The children returned and loved testing out the toys, and they all had a great time scooting around the playground.

Year 2 have been researching the characteristics of living things. Having found out about different minibeasts, the children decided whether they should build their minibeast house in the light or shade, damp or dry. They then designed the houses before heading off to the woods to build them. We will return after half term to see if any creatures have moved in.

Frogs Create Superhero PicturesFollowing on from the children’s interest in superhero play, each Frog is creating their own special superhero picture. The background of the picture has been created using water pistols that squirt coloured paint. A great time was had by all and the paint effect looks amazing! Tadpoles and Tiddlers Stop the

WolfThe tadpoles and tiddlers were worried when they came across a big bad wolf in the tumble room. Problem solving began and we had to work out how to stop the wolf!We took inspiration from The Three Little Pigs and recreated the story during a group role play activity. We then set about making our own straw, stick and brick houses, along with pig and wolf masks.

Washinkai Karate CompetitionZachary Bix from Year 1 won first place in the Washinkai Karate Competition at Millfield. Well done!

MINIS - Go for a SplashThe MINIS have had an awesome week swimming in the Prep pool. A huge thank you to Grace who took all of the swimming sessions for us and helped the Minis to learn new swimming skills, such as pushing off from the side as well as fun with floats, pool toys, woggles and singing. The Minis then enjoyed their snack in Pre-Prep before being given their certificates for being super swimmers!

Welcome to Brodie

Minis Plus Play SportThe Minis plus group took advantage of the sunny weather and headed to the fields for mini sports. We played lots of fun games using all the sports equipment and ended with some fun races such as collecting shopping items in their baskets, a water relay race and a hopping race. They enjoyed their half time refresher of orange segments and water, with still time to play in the Pre-Prep sandpit before being awarded their medals.
