Residents, Families & Volunteers

July 2020

Longridge is grateful we have survived and thrived in this COVID-19 period! Resident families were won-

derful as we all adjusted together to life at a distance. I think we can thank the fantastic leadership of

the Police Commissioner Grant Stevens, SA Health Professor Nicola Spurrier and Premier Steven Mar-

shall for clear and focussed leadership as we launched into “the unknown”. SA have been so lucky!

Longridge would like to acknowledge the fantastic efforts of our Admin team Bec & Tracey as they have

‘manned’ the reception and phones tracking our visitors, taking temperatures, recording fluvax status

and fielding questions re each individuals personal circumstances.

Their gate keeping has played a major role in maintaining resident safety! What a challenge it has been

but with the collective skill and commitment of every Department at Longridge we have maintained a

vibrant and happy home.

ALL staff in all departments made the commitment to minimise all their exposure and contacts during

the lockdown period to ensure the safety of our residents—and each other. I am so proud of each and

every staff member for their dedication and professionalism. THEY ARE A GREAT TEAM!!

Some staff unable to guarantee their contact limits (due to partners working in essential cross border

industries) were suspended from duties on site for 3 months and are only now transitioning into the

Longridge workforce again. The Lifestyle team of Jenny, Claire and Tom used all the technology at hand

to Skype, Zoom, Facetime and Facebook contact with our family, friends and the wider community.

We have maintained the safety of our residents over these last months and as we move forward easing

restrictions, increasing contacts and getting back to our ‘new normal’ we remain focussed on maintain-

ing a cautious and measured plan to minimise risk.

Elizabeth Broadstock, Director / Executive Officer.

Our Residents have enjoyed bus trips up to three times per week in both the new Mercedes bus and the Mobility Van

for the smaller groups. We estimate to have covered well over 2,000 kilometres in recent months including trips to

Lucindale, Penola, Bool Lagoon, Kyby, Frances and Cockatoo Lake. They have enjoyed many morning teas out and

about including the Naracoorte Caves, Father Woods Tree, Henry’s Drive winery overlooking the vineyards and on the

Kyby Footy Oval! In March, our resident’s attended the Australian dog championships at Lucindale and enjoyed lunch

on the Field Days site, then drove via a Resident’s farm on the way home.

Residents have enjoyed cooking each week AND, they

also get to taste their cooking with a cuppa afterwards.

In May, our Lifestyle Team organised a Mothers Day High Tea, along with the Biggest Morning Tea

which was a huge success! We invited the Independent Units to order a plate of morning tea, along

with all staff and residents who enjoyed a morning tea together in the Recreation Room. As a result, a

whopping $700 was donated to the Cancer Council. Longridge would like to sincerely thank the Lifestyle

Team for arranging and coordinating the cooking for both events, and the delivery of the plates to our

ILU Residents.

REMINDER: Laundry Services

Just a reminder from our laundress. Please

remember that clothing MUST be named—

50 residents make for LOTS of lost clothing

when items are incognito!

We have a great service where clothing can

be labelled for $1 an item and the label

doesn’t come off in our commercial

machines.

TILLY

NANCY

Longridge appreciates their youth & vitality and we look forward to being a part of their nursing development in what will be a long and successful nursing career ahead for both of them.

Tilly studied at Uni SA and is part of the Graduate RN program affiliated with Mt Gambier Hospital. Tilly would like to find her place in a specialty Acute setting and is currently exploring where this will take her. She enjoys Pop music and enjoys getting back to Adelaide as much as possible to catch up with her friends.

Bec, Administration

Bec joined the Administration team in March. Bec has 14 years experi-ence in the Health Care sector including Aged Care. She has worked at the Naracoorte Hospital, Moreton Bay House and Community Health since moving to Naracoorte 15 years ago.

Nancy & Tilly, Nursing

We are thrilled to have Nancy & Tilly on our nursing team. Both have nursing degrees and are consolidating their skills at Longridge in 2020. They have settled in well – working collaboratively with the senior RN team they are learning and building skills and confidence.

Nancy has many years of aged care experience where she worked as a carer during her years of study at Flinders Uni.

Nancy loves getting back to Adelaide to enjoy her favourite food at “Nandos”.

New employee snapshot!

Longridge welcomed Zoe to the Ancillary Team in April, and she is

now one of our newest Cooks!

Zoe is an Adelaide girl who originally came to Naracoorte 7 years

ago to work at one of our local pubs, however COVID-19 meant

that Zoe’s life took a turn and we are now lucky to call her ‘ours’! Zoe’s

passion for cooking developed during her childhood where she spent quality time baking

with her grandma. Zoe has 13 years experience in the Hospitality Industry and has been

cooking for 10 years in various roles.

Zoe loves the diversity in her role here at Longridge, and the different characters she

meets each day. In her spare time, Zoe enjoys taking walks and spending time with her

partner and young son! Be sure to say hi to Zoe when you see her around!

This Project is run by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA)

& funded by Primary Health Network (PHN.) This pilot project

demonstrated success in GP clinics and is now expanding into the

aged care sector.

The program ‘embeds’ pharmacists into aged care so that they

have the time and capacity to work collaboratively with the nursing

and care team to assess residents health & well being.

Longridge is privileged to have been chosen as one of the 10 sites

in SA & is already reaping the rewards of Millie’s input. Millie works

10 hours / week at Longridge. Millie’s expertise monitors &

‘assesses our resident’s individual medication usage. Millie then

works in conjunction with the GPs to ensure best outcomes and

best health is at the forefront for our residents.

Millie’s role also extends to nursing & care staff education and

training – this further supporting the safe use of medications in

aged care. Longridge is thrilled to have Millie on the team!

Longridge is keen to celebrate the collective culinary wisdom & skills of our residents with the production of a glossy 2020 Longridge Recipe Book.

With quality professional photos of our residents, their recipes and the fabulous results of their cooking this will be a great ‘coffee table’ keepsake.

Of course, a book of this quality cannot be produced on a shoestring & this is where YOU come in! Longridge is looking for orders (& donations) from our residents and families to

fund this major project.

The books will sell for $30 each & promise to be a treasured catalogue of the foods we have enjoyed over the years – made with love by the ones we cherish.

Please email or phone through your order & payment details to Admin (Bec or Tracey) to

secure your copy.

Longridge has embarked on a program with residents capturing their life histories.

Lifestyle Team Member Tom Leahy is driving this program- filming residents through an ‘interview’ process as they reminisce about the key moments in their lives.

Our plan is to learn more about these wonderful people in our care, & then at the end of their lives their families will have an amazing record to keep.

Of course, Tom adapts the process to ensure we are sensitive to their life paths & interests.

Here’s Tom with Georgie Oldfield during their recent interview.
